Especially when you factor in a) how often seeking light/bringing light to the world is mentioned by Telemachus but also look up Ismarus, another cut song. At the end there's a lead in to this song in which Polites approaches sleepless Odysseus and asks "what keeps you up so late at night my friend?" "All I hear are screams every time I dare to close my eyes I no longer dream, only nightmares of those who've died. Nothing's what it seems-" "Nothing's what it seems," echoes Polites gently. "Not every choice is black and white." And Ody tells him, as desperate as he sounds when he sings it in Underworld, "I keep thinking of the infant from that night, I keep thinking of the infant from that night...." And then we have this song. But here's the thing. "What keeps you up so late at night my friend?" is sung with the same melody that Telemachus sings "tell me Athena why you came to my aid?" right before they perform "We'll Be Fine" together.
I love how the song establishes that they knew each other before the war. It reinforces their friendship, and it’s so cute. Seeing Odysseus have an actual song with a friend guiding him out of the darkness that the war tainted his mind with is just so sweet. I want a lifelong friend like Polites, ngl.
All of the men, including Elepenor and Eurolycus, survived and got home safely, Odysseus's mom is safe and alive, and the suiters all threw a party for telemucus
While that would certainly be dramatic, I don’t think it’s supported by the text. The Cyclops’s twisted deal was that, in return for the wine, he would not kill Odysseus until the rest of his crew was dead. We are given no indication that he goes back on this deal, and like, you know that sassy little Odie would have brought it up if the deal had been broken.
@@mapleflame9027 The musical is what I meant by “the text” 😅 And like, yeah, you can have headcanons all day and all night, and more power to you. I just think it’s fun to think about which ones could and couldn’t be “actually happening” in the world of the play. For example: There is no evidence that Odysseus was listening to Eurylochus’s confession in Scylla’s lair. To me, the fact that “Odie wasn’t listening” isn’t contradicted by the text (again I’m using “the text” to mean the words and sounds in the recording) makes this headcanon more fun than it would be otherwise. This is, however, only a personal preference; you can do whatever you want at all times. Long live trans Telemachus, and all that.
@@AquaticDot He said that if he does do one, he probably won't get the va's bc of everything that goes into just the official music. Even tho I'm sure at least some of them will be more than willing, Jorge would have a lot of hoops to jump through to get a fully voiced cut song saga. He'd probably just do the vocals himself and/or use what's already released.
Though I can understand why this song was cut (that possibly being so Odysseus could go over the edge and reject Polites's optimism), I really wish that it could have stayed if only for the beginning alone. I feel like it adds so much to Polites's character; it shows he recognizes that the world can be dangerous and scary, but that doesn't mean optimism doesn't have its place and further emphasizes that it isn't worthless. It adds a layer of intelligence to Polites that I feel is missing from him in the final cut.
@@Tuskbumperi know I’m not the original commenter but I have my own two cents: My take is simply that it was a bit too ship-y. The reason I think was that Jay was trying to set you two philosophys with polites and Poseidon on opposite sides. While your light was great for polites it didn’t really show his philosophy of open arms, so it was cut. Also there’s always the chance of a cut song saga
