FIX AC WITH A STICK

  • Quick fix to get cool now. Watch till the end for the fix. The fan motor does not contain the capacitor as I say in the video. The capacitor needs to be changed. It is a separate part that looks like a cylinder in the side of the unit. It contains a high voltage so be careful with it. The capacitor will have power in it even with the power shut off to the AC unit. Always turn off the power before resetting the air conditioner. Air conditioner won't turn on. I pushed the reset button and spun the fan and it started. The capacitor is charged and provides the energy to spin the motor so it starts. You should turn off the power before pushing the reset button. The capacitor is cheap and not hard to replace and is easy for a do it yourself guy as you just unscrew and plug in a new one. I am not a professional. With this model the unit shuts down if the fan does not spin. This is a Lennox XC13-042-230-01 from about 2006.
    Spinning the fan is a cheap and free way to see if your capacitor is broken or won't stay charged. If your unit starts when you spin it, then you will need a new capacitor. You can call a HVAC professional to change the capacitor. When calling the HVAC tell them your make and model number and that you think the capacitor is bad. Asking them to bring one with them and you will pay for it even if it is not the capacitor. The capacitor will have a part number on it. You can order a new one from amazon or your local parts dealer and have it sitting there when the service person comes or you could change it yourself.
    The capacitor holds a charge when it is not turned on. Be very careful as you can get a electrical shock from the capacitor when the power is off. The way to discharge the capacitor is to turn off the power to the air conditioner and place a screwdriver across the connecting pins without touching the metal of the screwdriver.
    UPDATE - Watch this video • Clean your air conditi...
    I didn't know you had to clean your AC unit. Mine died as it wash clogged with dust and dirt in the fins and overheated. This takes minutes with a garden hose. I had to replace the whole unit and feel really stupid. - watch my video on how to clean it or yours may die too.

    Well, it's August 2021 and your video is still helping folk. My HVAC stopped working on Thursday. Today is Saturday and my home is finally cooling! I reset my thermostat. No change. Then I turned it off, and turned off the circuit breakers for the unit. Waited. Turned every thing back on in reverse order. No change. Repeated. No change. Third time today, repeated the steps. May have put in more wait time. The only thing I added was a screw driver to push the fan clockwise. It didn't seem to be working. When I was about to call it quits, the fan started spinning! Glad I was patient. Thank you for the video.

    This helped me three years ago, then 6 months later. I had a cheap Chinese-made capacitor go out, then another one. Once I put in a (much more expensive but far more robust) American-made capacitor, I haven't had one blow yet.

    Note: This will work sometimes when the capacitor is bad. But you'll have to do it each time your thermostat calls for the compressor to come on. And it's not good for your fan motor to sit there humming and not turning. It can get your house cooled down so you're not so uncomfortable while the part or repairman is coming but it's not a permanent solution. Just pointing this out since some of the commenters seem to think this is a fix when it's not. It's more like a temporary solution to get by for a few hours till it can be fixed. If you are going to do this it's best to be observant so that when your a/c shuts back off (house has cooled to the thermostat setting) you can go to your thermostat and turn it to off. Then when you need the a/c to run again have someone outside ready to get the fan moving before you switch the thermostat back to cool. That way you don't ruin the fan motor (or at least shorten it's life) before the capacitor gets replaced. Hope this helps some to not ruin their fan motor. They are way more expensive to replace than the capacitor!

    Thanks for the video! This worked for me. I put a long metal rod in there, and luckily a metal screw prevented it from reaching the bottom. I then tried the plastic rod I had with me and it fit perfectly. I hit the red button and whoosh, the fan came to life. I immediatedly thought something bad was going to happen as I was pulling the rod out. Got it out pretty quickly and happy to have the AC back on. My dad is 83 and was dying from the heat, I had fans on him, but still a blessing to have the central air back on. thanks again.

    I did not replace anything when I did this trick. I did not think this would actually work but I am so glad I tried. It’s over 100 degrees feels like temp here today in Florida and of course the AC stops on a weekend. All I could hear is the outside unit trying to turn on but it wouldn’t. I cleaned all the debris around it and followed the directions in the Video and when I used a wooden paint stick to turn the fan blade manually and it took off on its own. It’s already 2 degrees cooler in my house while I’m typing this message. Thanks! I’ll wait before replacing anything and since it’s humming along fine now!

      Try the fuses in the disconnect. Also a bad contactor can stop power from reaching the compressor. We the t-stat calls for cooling 24-27 volts goes through the t-stat to the contactor. The contactor pulls closed allowing 240V to operate the heat pump.

    Thanks for posting this video...I came home one day to no AC working. I could hear a hum coming from the condenser. I looked up on you tube videos and several said to replace the capacitor. My hubby and I removed the old one and it had sticky stuff all over it so I assume it was leaking. I took the info from that one and ordered a new one made by the same manufacturer. We took pics before removed the old to make sure we had the connections in the right place. It did not start at first but within minutes the fan started up again and it appeared to be working great. I am not a fan of AC but our house sits in the open and has lots of big windows so it gets very hot during the day. Its great in the winter but not so in the heat of the summer. I set the thermostat at 70 because I do not like a big variation temperature from the outside. The Condensor fan was not blowing this am when we got up and the house temp was 72-73. I can hear the same hum as before. Any ideas?? Could the new capacitor have failed?

    Motor is working great. Its most probably just the $20 capacitor that is not sending enough current to kick the motor on. Simply take a picture of the model number on the side of that unit and call an electrical supply store for the right part. Then watch a couple qualified videos about how to drain the old capacitor, (so you don't get shocked!), cut ALL the power, and install the new capacitor. Easy job.

      I replaced the capacitor and it worked, but now after like 20 mins the fan turns off.. what would be the problem??

    • @glock30fotyfive
      @glock30fotyfive 3 месяца назад +1

      @@basicallybroly it may be best to call someone for that, but something like that could be a be a faulty capacitor (even if new) or a faulty motor. There could be a thermal switch that is shutting the motor down because it's overheating. First make sure you got the right capacitor and that the microfarads do not exceed that on the old capacitor. Very well could be the motor, especially if the unit is old. Motors go bad.

    I have been watching lots of videos on RUclips searching for answers as to why my Lennox air conditioner was not spinning. I refuse to pay for a service call if it is something I can fix myself. At the advice of another video, I removed the protective grills and cleaned it really good with that foam spray cleaner from the hardware store. It definitely needed it! Next I was going to try replacing the capacitor. Then I watched your video. I was not aware that there was a reset button, none of the other videos I watched even mentioned it. I got a long stick and pressed it. Total success!! The fan fired right up and my house is finally cooling off. You are a life saver Terry, thank you very much! Thank you, thank you, thank you! My AC unit just wasn't turning on at all.....no humming or buzzing....fan not spinning. I would set the thermostat in the house to have the AC run and the only thing that happened was the blower turned on. I had a feeling that power wasn't getting to it.. Luckily I saw your video and learned that there was a reset button. I figured I would try everything I could to solve this before calling someone to fix it. I stuck a thin dowel through the top and pushed the red button ......and it came on!! It was a bit scary cause I knew if it did turn on the fan blades would start spinning right away and hit the dowel. I was able to get it pulled back up and out before the blades really got going. I hope this is the quick fix I had hoped for! No weird noises.....no slow start.....air blowing into the house is cold. I think what might have caused it to trip is when I turned the power off to the whole house to change an outlet.. My breakers aren't marked and I couldn't figure out which one went to a certain area of the house....so I just turned off the main one.

    Noticed this on my Bryant 5 ton today. The compressor kicks on but not the fan and I'm assuming by the time I go out there the fan sensor or thermo eventually trips and shuts it all down because it's hot when I stand in front of it. I can get the fan going with a stick as well and do not think it's the bearings. A bad fan motor would be noticably harder to spin and usually make noise due to dry worn bearings so I to am leaning towards the start Capacitor. I replaced it eight years ago but that one completly failed but they can also partially fail like this one as well. On a final note the first capicitor was a GE, the one I replaced it with was same spec but made by Packard and it made a distinctive loud charge snap when it started the unit. It doesn't make the sound today like it lost it's power strorage ability.

    Hi, I've been having the same problem for the past weeks. My unit outside doesn't have a reset button, but it sounds exactly the way it does on the video when I turn the inside unit on. Anyway, I did what you did, moved the fan with a stick and it turned right on.!!! Is it normal for the fan to blow out hot air? BTW, Thanks for your video!!!!

      Lol no he didn't, eventually you will HAVE to change the capacitor. That's all that's wrong here. It's not the cfm

    Thank you very much. I was cleaning out the yearly cottonwood from the sides from the inside with a hose and the wiring harness on top slipped apart and blocked the fan the next time I used it. Pressing the red button worked perfectly :)

    if you can start the motor by spinning the blades and it starts , there's nothing wrong with the fan motor , it's the capacitor that's bad . the capacitor is not built into the fan motor on thses a/c units

    • @ascotell
      @ascotell 5 лет назад

      The bearings could still be bad.

    • @bobbycravens2608
      @bobbycravens2608 5 лет назад

      not very likely . I did this for a living and never found bad bearings in a fan motor . either the motor was locked up and wouldn't turn or the capacitor was bad . bad info causes people to spend money on things they don't need

    I’m in Texas thx man I just tried this and it worked still not sure if it’s the motor or capacitor. But at least I know now it’s one of those 2

      Some multi meter's have a capacitor test function. The test range is usually +/- 5%. But if it's on the lower end of the nominal spec's replace it. If you don't have a tester check the top for bulges. Also the bottom should be flat as glass. If it rocks in multiple directions standing upright on a flat surface (like a granite countertop) then it's toast.

    Can also be the relay actuator blocked by nests, bugs, etc. Wirth a cleaning (but, you would have seen that mess if you were going to replace the cap anyway).
    Ours was just a blocked relay - my suspicion first was the smell of burning leaves coming from the unit - and it's Summer right now!

    Do the unit have to be turned on from the inside in order to reset it from the outside

    I have the same issue. I changed the capacitor knowing the problem I had five years ago. New capacitor is in and it didn’t fix the problem. Capacitor in my case was only $15 from Grainger so no huge loss. Looks like fan motor time. Oh yes, mine will also go with a push from a stick.

    Any chances on the culprit being the flux capacitor?? Or maybe the multi frequency triangulating father board???

    possibly replace a good motor when it may be a 25 dollar cap?

    • @Terry-rr3fm
      @Terry-rr3fm  8 лет назад +7

      You're right. I thought the capacitor was in the motor, but it is a separate part. Changing the motor won't fix the problem. You have to change the capacitor.

  • @rayriley3366
    @rayriley3366 3 года назад

    Not sure why you would use a stick. Lenox units have an access panel held on buy only two screws. Can reach in and push the reset button with your hand. Reset will work with unit off if that’s a concern. If you use a stick with a healthy fan motor you will need to get it out of the way fast.

    • @muffdiver7670
      @muffdiver7670 5 лет назад +2

      Probably just change the capacitor. If you "helped" the motor get started..the capacitor didn't have enough juice..it's weak!
