How do you add Freon if unit won’t turn on through vapor side or liquid side ? Seems to take forever for the refrigerant to enter the unit as through vapor side when unit isn’t running.
The unit has to be running. The compressor sucks it in so it has to run. If it's just to get the pressure switch engaged, then I go through suction side until it gets to around 50 psi. Then unit clicks on. Thank you so much for watching!
I have a heat pump unit too. I got heat from the furnace but the contactor not pulling in so the outside unit isn't running so if I get it some refrigerant juice, the unit may start. You are demonstrating abut cooling. But Does heat need refrigerant to kick off low pressure switch for the contactor to get 24v too?
Hi lex , just wonder how much will it cost for this job run to ? I have the same problem inside working outside no working no sound, condenser and fan not working as well ..
I'm an apartment maintenance man so we don't charge for our work. Price really depends on the contractor you hire. My guess would be $100 diagnostic fee and then another $150 for parts and labor. Thank you so much for watching Charles!
Hey Alex, How do you know if the high pressure or low pressure switch are bad? How would you test that? And if they are working can you by pass the high pressure or low pressure switch?
You test the two wires on the pressure switch with your meter on beeping continuity. If it beeps it's good, if it doesn't beep the pressure switch is bad. You can bypass by cutting the wire and wire nutting together. Thank you so much for watching!
My unit has 24v and the contactor is pull8ng in but my unit isn't kicking on..changed the capacitor and it isn't running..added a Super Boost not kicking on...
If the whole unit isn't turning on, make sure there's 240 volts going to it. Make sure breaker isn't tripped in the breaker box. I'd need to be there for this head scratcher 🤔.
I’ve always been told that a/c units on dirt or grass ground tend to break and experience more problems then a/c units on concrete or on a concrete slab. Would you say this is true ?
Yes, units up off the ground don't get the outside coil clogged as much. So, it can breathe better and not run high head pressure. Thank you so much for watching successful!
Ours is the very opposite..out side running inaide seems no contact to start cool air but air is coming out..had well ck June 9th all was great! Not heat pump..
Quick question: I took out the 220 volt outside breaker to clean the compressor coils with an easy stream of water no splashing no heavy straight line stream of water. But when I put back the 220 breaker the compressor wouldn't come back on despite the inside blower working fine also the compressor was working fine with no issues what happened?
Yeah, those go can be tricky. For some reason Square D breakers need replacing after getting messed with. Doesn't happen all the time but it does happen often. I hope everything works out for you Bo!
Fan and Compressor were not kicking in. Replace Capacitor, Contactor, Control Board and still did not start. Replaced Low pressure switch and Air Condition (Fan and Compressor) start working.
Before I add refrigerant id ask when last time it cooled unit that low big leak if it was since last year one thing over night or its a big leak either way freon leaks suck.
So hard sometimes find leaks signs of oil helps i have a video where I put e coil under water leak didn't show until 600psi I was very scared of that psi would show video but don't know how
My AC was working perfectly and today it went out. Did the stick trick to spin the fan and the fan cut on! But the air isn’t cold. What do you think it is?
Yea, usually after I pull a vac, I add liquid to the high side first until positive pressure. Then, I charge through the low side like you have to do with 410a. Thank you so much for watching Pete!
Just ran into the same problem. Only the unit I'm working on is R22. But I'm using 407C. Do I connect the Gauges to both high and low side to turn the unit on as well? Or just the high side?
So what’s the cheapest HVAC system on the market? I’m retiring and selling my house soon, and the AC is out and the furnace works but makes “boom” noises when it shuts off. It’s a mid-80s Carrier and I think to sell the house it should be replaced with a new system but I want as low-cost as possible. Thank you! Your videos are fun to watch even though I know nothing except how to check my capacitor.
My brother in law has a unit that keeps blowing those fuses. He just changed the unit and they left the same wiring. It still happens with the new unit. It will work for a week or so and then they will blow
There's a skinned wire somewhere with exposed copper touching metal or another copper wire. Could be in the wall or who knows where. Low voltage shorts are tricky. May need to run new wire.
@@LexVance thanks so much. That’s what I was telling him. He told me it happens more in the really hot summer days but I told him I’m seriously leaning more towards a wiring issue. Thanks again
Hey Lex hate to go off topic on this vid. But could you clarify what emergencies and non-emergencies are for on call in your opinion..And what's your take on make readies being on call? Usually it Leads and Assistants..Thanks again for the feedback..
On call emergencies are no AC, no heat, front door lock malfunctions, one bathroom toilet clogs, alarms going off and leaks causing property damage. Everything else is not an emergency and can wait. Make readies should only be done during business hours. On call is for emergencies only. Thank you so much for watching Alvin!
You were stating that you could walk away from a system as you know it's leaking and that is technically against the law. If the charge was gone knowing there's a lake you could have pressurized it and left that in the system then pull it back it and recharge it with leak detector fluorescent die and fresh freon for small leagues
You're right. I have 200 leaking ac units on the property I work at. I have to slowly get to them all. So, I gas them up to keep the resident cool until I can come back and repair the leak. They should make a law about not manufacturing this cheaply made equipment that leaks a year later. It's not my fault it's leaking. It's their fault. I'm just there to fix their cheap products. Did the law change? Epa has no law now for these residential systems [under 200lbs from 608 cert] regarding refilling a leaking system? Just curious for learning.
Make the brass caps with a pin hole drilled in the end to test for bubbling on shraders like acservice tech showed! Keeps it clean in there! Just my thought! But good video dude 👍👍
Greg, do you have a link? Or the name of Craig @ AC service tech’s video? It sounds like self explanatory but I’d like to catch his video if I can. It would keep the bubbles and dirt of the valve without having to carry a CRT. Thanks Speckulator
At my property the mowers are complete idiots. I have 1 unit knocked right into the disconnect and another one you can barely get your gages on because they whacked it. They also don't aim their mower discharge shoots away from the condensers. I mentioned this 3 years ago when I first started until I got tired of repeating myself.
Oh no. The compressor may be bad. You'd have to unplug the compressor outside. If the breaker stays on after unplugging the compressor then you either have a burned wire or a bad compressor. Sorry! 😭
any tips on if i hear a “clicking” sound at the condenser unit when setting the thermostat to cool and/or turning thermostat to off? I hear the click and the condenser/compressor stay off
@@LexVance thanks for the tips. I had replaced the capacitor and have reset the breaker but no luck with either. any other tips that you can think of? thanks in advance
@@CoVaTennis Did you ever figure out what the issue was? That's exactly what we've got going on; we hear that clicking signifying the low voltage contactor opening/closing, but no noise coming from the compressor, and no movement from the fan.
I'm catching this 3 years late, but yeah, you were an essential worker... maybe not for *every* WO, but for a lot. It is insane how misaligned compensation is from criticality.
I have a question since I’m not to familiar with heat pumps and furnaces. My inside unit (furnace?) is blowing air but the outside unit is not blowing any air. Btw the thermostat is set at 70 heat and the temp is met. Is this normal or not I’ve never notice it before.
If you've got the tstat set to Emer. Heat, the outside unit will not turn on and blow air because your using the inside heat strips. If the tstat is set to just Heat, then the outside unit should come on and blow air. Thank you for watching DTD!
@@LexVance You were right on the money! A wire that shorted the compressor and blew it out. All leads into the compressor were shorted to ground. New compressor going in now. Thanks for your feedback.
It's depends if it's a heat pump or a straight cool system. Heat pumps need the inside and outside unit to run for heat. Straight cool units usually use gas, oil, or hydronic systems for heat. No outside unit needed. Thank you so much for watching Nightmare!
@@LexVance thanks for the reply- sorry I should have mentioned. I only mean a short run of the comprrsdor. The refrigerant is just low and I wanted to pump down the unit as there are several other issues with the unit. Mainly cosmetic. So I want to replace. My recovery machine is in the middle of repair.
I have no clue what you just did.😯 I replaced the capacitor, filter, & thermostat and after restarting the AC unit the fan ran for about 15min then stopped. I'm lost at this point!😧
If your unit has a low pressure switch, it will shut off when pressures drop too low. That means your unit could be low on Freon. They put low pressure switches on them to protect the compressor.
@@LexVance Hello Lex, I've now replaced the fuses along with a new thermostat, capacitor, and filter. The fan stated and stopped again after about 10min. If the unit is low on refrigerant charge will that cause the fan to stop?

Did the law change? Epa has no law now for these residential systems [under 200lbs from 608 cert] regarding refilling a leaking system? Just curious for learning.
Make the brass caps with a pin hole drilled in the end to test for bubbling on shraders like acservice tech showed! Keeps it clean in there! Just my thought! But good video dude 👍👍
Right on! Craig is awesome.
Thank you so much for watching Greg!
Greg, do you have a link? Or the name of Craig @ AC service tech’s video? It sounds like self explanatory but I’d like to catch his video if I can. It would keep the bubbles and dirt of the valve without having to carry a CRT.
Thanks

At my property the mowers are complete idiots. I have 1 unit knocked right into the disconnect and another one you can barely get your gages on because they whacked it. They also don't aim their mower discharge shoots away from the condensers. I mentioned this 3 years ago when I first started until I got tired of repeating myself.
Yeah, lawncare companies can really mess a property up. Thank you so much for watching Edward!
My unites fan is running but there is no air flow from my homes vents
Could be blocked with ice.
Love the videos. Keep them coming
Thank you so much for watching Shawn!
Sometimes the easy repairs can become the most stressful 😬
No doubt. That was a rare one caught on film.
👍😆👍 Thank you so much for watching Maintenance Man!
@@LexVance yep!! Makes for an entertaining and helpful video!! Cool😎
My other HVAC teacher showed up on the comments!
Can you let me know whats your leak detector name or model # please, that's great
I have a link to it in video description. Click the down arrow below the video and you'll find the link. Thank you so much for watching Adan!
My AC breaker is on "off". I tried to put it on "on", but it clicks off immediately. Please help!
Oh no. The compressor may be bad. You'd have to unplug the compressor outside. If the breaker stays on after unplugging the compressor then you either have a burned wire or a bad compressor. Sorry! 😭
@@LexVance I hope a bad wire. Maybe when I bumped it while mowing.
I sure hope so.
Thank you for your answer.
any tips on if i hear a “clicking” sound at the condenser unit when setting the thermostat to cool and/or turning thermostat to off? I hear the click and the condenser/compressor stay off
You're hearing the low voltage contactor opening and closing. Sounds like the high voltage ain't working. Maybe a tripped breaker or bad capacitor.
@@aykkes6215 yea it was a wire on the outside running to compressor that was wearing down. had to replace it
@@CoVaTennis Thx for the lightning quick response. I'm gona look into that now.
They’re going to take your EPA‘s away!🤣🤣 great content though my friend 💪🏽
Thank you so much for watching!
I'm catching this 3 years late, but yeah, you were an essential worker... maybe not for *every* WO, but for a lot.
It is insane how misaligned compensation is from criticality.
Thank you so much for watching!
@@LexVance yeah it’s just set to normal heat not emergency and yeah man thanks for uploading!
My outside unit stopped but inside was still blowing. Outside unit tripped the circuit breaker and resetting just retrips.
May be a burned wire or bad compressor. I'd need to be there for this head scratcher 🤔.
@@LexVance You were right on the money! A wire that shorted the compressor and blew it out. All leads into the compressor were shorted to ground. New compressor going in now. Thanks for your feedback.
I changed the compressor and the contactor it was all working perfectly came back from vacation and now nothing 😩
Oh no! Hopefully it's something simple like a tripped breaker.
Do it work the same as when using the heater?
It's depends if it's a heat pump or a straight cool system. Heat pumps need the inside and outside unit to run for heat. Straight cool units usually use gas, oil, or hydronic systems for heat. No outside unit needed. Thank you so much for watching Nightmare!
Good job buddy, great video.
Thank you so much for watching Michael!
Is there a way you can force the compressor to run without topping up refrigerant
No, that'll damage the compressor. The refrigerant keeps the compressor cool. It'll overheat and break if there's not enough refrigerant.
What kind of leak detector are you using?
In this video it's an H-10 made by Bacharach.
That looks interesting, never seen that tool before
Thank you so much for watching Cooldude!
nice vid skid! 🤙
Thank you so much for watching WTF!
@@LexVance Thanks for sharing.👍 I will replace the fuses 1st then go from there. 😄
@@LexVance Hello Lex, I've now replaced the fuses along with a new thermostat, capacitor, and filter. The fan stated and stopped again after about 10min. If the unit is low on refrigerant charge will that cause the fan to stop?
Your fan motor may be bad. Does the compressor stay on after the fan stops?
@@ChevyARt15 Hi and thanks for the information. The motor is bad unfortunately. The unit is 30yrs years old and has overrun it's course, I am getting a new one installed with a 10yr parts and 10yr labor warranty. I am not going to keep putting $'s into this thing. Thanks again for the info.
lex how you find leaks
I have an H-10 Bacharach leak detector. I also have a few videos of me using it and fixing the refrigerant leaks. The videos are in my HVAC playlist on this RUclips channel. Thank you so much for watching Gali!
My outside ac was not working.....for some crazy reason....a yellow wire disconnected from the contactor.... problem fixed.
Awesome! Thank you so much for watching!
Leaky schrader valve.... good one!

my unit has been glitching for like 2 years , sometimes it works i have to reset the circuit breaker once a day , capacitor, contactors, circuit board changed no help any thoughts? when its running it works fine when it acts up the inside fan runs fine but outside fan is off . after reset it runs fine.
I'd need to be there with my volt meter and refrigerant gauges for this head scratcher. It could be lots of things. Thank you so much for watching Mauricio!
@@LexVance freon is good and all voltage charges were good also , as precaution also swapped out a new smart thermostat the old ecobee was just a few years old and installed the same ecobee. As and airplane mechanic I know this will be hard to find....chasing ghosts here.
What is setpoint on a trane
I'm not sure what you mean by setpoint.
Hey lex what kind of vacuum pump do you use?
The ol' JB Eleminator. Thank you so much for watching Alex!
Lex Vance the JB’s are absolute tanks. They just keep going like the Energizer Bunny!
What if I'm just getting heat when thermostat on emergency heat everything thing running except the unit outside
Emergency heat only uses heat strips inside. Outside won't come on until you just use the heat setting. If unit outside still won't come on then it could be numerous issues. Thank you so much for watching Realest!
@@LexVance thank you
I think this is what my landlord needs to do . Last summer it was caking up ice so he added whatever and I didn't have to turn unit to 68 to feel it , new temp.72 . Now it won't turn on outside . It was running for 3 days and nothing . Even the heat was cool but worked in Emergency mode . I said hole in the line but what gives now ? He doesn't service HVAC at all until........😳I'm watching this video while they are outside since 9:30 am 🌞
Thank you so much for watching Angela! I hope it gets fixed.
What if it has frion and it’s not working??
Could be numerous issues. I'd need to be there for this head scratcher 🤔.

@@LexVance thank you man, I contacted a local company I’m in Port Saint Lucie
Lex: I watched this again and I'm trying to figure out what you mean by straight negative? You mention it a few times in regards to testing and charge.
Then you say it must be the ol' corona. Does the virus or pandemic have anything to do with the leak or the system?
Sincere questions, please help.
Yes, the charge was in the negative and causing unit to not come on due to low pressure. No, the rona had nothing to do with it. Thank you so much for watching Sam!
