I do like that they kept Casper's cartoony design. They could have easily casted an actual child, made him look like a ghost, and call it a day. Instead, they decided to stay true to the comics and animated shorts.

This movie, it goes straight for the “I died from the snow and my dad went to the cuckoo house!” Like damn, that’s just deep. While a lot of people were quick to call this movie too dark for Casper, it’s actually a bit closer to the tone of the original story which Casper originated from. The first three Casper cartoons made didn’t shy away from some pretty sad or downright depressing subjects - everything from loosing a beloved animal friend to a hunter’s gun (twice) to Casper attempting suicide due to his loneliness.
Fun fact - because the original book which he originated from was never published, Casper is technically in the public domain since his first three cartoons were never renewed. So technically, one could make their own Casper film based around this earlier iteration of the character - so long as you avoid the trademark.

Tbf, Casper was originally dark from the 40s cartoons. His first appearance explained he only made friends so he could forget he's dead and after being rejected, he lays on traintracks to end his eternal pain. Only to break down in tears after the train passed through him. And the next short had him befriend a pet fox and then HE DIES and becomes a ghost at the end. It wasn't until the 50s comics that tried to sugarcoat the darker themes that he's a dead child and added fairytale elements.
So the movie is MUCH closer to what Casper was originally: A darkly whimsy story about a lonely kid finding happiness with others who will accept him.

Cathy Moriarty’s a good looking woman. But, every time I see her all I can think of is her, as Montana Moorehead, screaming in horror and running off the set of the “Sun Also Sets” after being outed as Milton Moorehead. That reveal came out of nowhere and leveled the entire theater.

Pretty sure the idea for the uncles was basically imagine that the three stooges as ghost. Pretty sure the concept was made even earlier in the 80s in a Scooby Doo special called Scooby Doo and the Boo Brothers. Can’t say for sure, but maybe they were the inspiration for the uncles.

It was the first movie to have the main lead CGI, the first movie to have the CG models perfectly capture human emotions, and the first movie to have more CG shots than Jurassic Park and T2. Most of the movie's reviews focused less on the story and more on the effects. But months before Toy Story came out. There was talk of one back in 2020 for Peacock. And would've been inspired by Riverdale as a dark, gritty portrayal. And would've made Casper a highschooler with somebody moving to town while uncovering a dark secret in the town of Eternal Falls. And said that Casper will have friends with benefits. (I'm guessing Casper loves the girl they moved to town, died and then came back as a ghost through the will of love.) Which if that's that premise is real then that's terrible. Thankfully we haven't heard anything about it since it's announcement. No release date, no director, or cast. It was quietly scrapped.
