  • Driving on I-15 Southbound I completely totaled this Motor home. Fortunately, I was the only one on board and walked away.. It was also outfitted with a professional camera system which captured the whole incident. This RV was a test platform for 1800 Watts of off grid solar power for our customers.

Everyone who drives RVs or is even thinking of driving one needs to watch videos like these and learn from them... it’s all about “watching” - ahead, your speed and even what’s behind you or beside you at all times. Think defensively, glad you are okay.

First mistake this person made was not looking wayyyy ahead, especially what’s going on in his lane, that is thee most important piece of advice I can give, give yourself plenty of time to either slow down, stop, take that off ramp, or switch lanes…whatever, this was no accident, this was an operator of a vehicle that was not paying attention to what was in front of him, it was completely his fault, your welcome.

Another plastic RV bites the dust. Glad you and others around you were not hurt badly. If a car or truck stops in front of you, you need to be able to stop or already know without looking if you can break right or left suddenly. Lack of situational awareness and short following distance were keys here.

glad no one was hurt, but the cameras showed something just as basic than not looking far enough ahead. I was taught from an early age by my dad (great driver and I miss him greatly) but the first thing he taught me to do when driving on a real road was to keep track of the cars around me. if I lose one look for it. this simple step would have made you take the path to the right instead of the slower move left because cars had to make an escape path on that side. also don;t feel too bad, semi trucks can stop when loaded much faster than people think.

i have been full time traveling in an RV for nearly 6 years and have logged many thousands of accident free miles. Going FIVE MILES PER HOUR UNDER the speed limit and keeping huge distancing with vehicles in front is Paramount. Stay the heck in the far right lane and not be venturing into the passing lane "bee bopping" down the interstate at 80 +MPH. These rigs are extremely top heavy and do not react well to sudden swerving. The tires are prone to overheating due to poor inflation! They aren't sports cars!

The blue (I thought was a black truck) stopped on a dime because the driver of the blue truck didn't realize until almost too late that the white truck was partially in the right lane and stationary. When I'm at speeds over 30 I feel as though the car is too out of my control. I had a feeling I was in the right for wanting to take things slowly, but he never listens to me and now, reading this comment, I feel so pissed off at him. All your stuff is in the RV.
3 If you pull a trailer and you get broke down,, a tow truck will take you to the nearest campground where you will stay with your home and the broken down pickup goes to a garage.

I have watched both videos, absolutely your fault. This coming from a trucker who has been on the job for 15 years, I also have a 37 ft. toy hauler. There is a tool you need to learn about that nobody on here seems to know anything about which doesn't suprise me it's called the Smith System Driving Technique. All good kids love milk is how you remember it. (A) is for Aim high in steering, (G) is for get the big picture, (K) is for keep your eyes moving, (L) is for leave your self an out, (M) is for make sure they see you. Your analysis of your driving, points out your flaws, I believe your following distance with that big of a vehicle was ok, but you figured out where you stopped paying attention at the sign. Your aim high in steering was fine until the truck stopped for whatever reason, you did not have situational awareness of the big picture, the white car proves that. You fixated on going left and once you made that decision you were doomed, you did not leave yourself an out which in the video is the right shoulder the truck in front of the truck you hit was partially on it, you would have been able to miss the truck you hit and stop short of the truck in front of him. In closing totally your fault, & take the smith system class, it will make you a better driver more observant & reduce your insurance costs, looks like your going to need it. Have a good one.

Shot 0:46 establishes that RV is traveling in right lane. At 0:50 RV begins to move left. 0:52-0:55 establishes that black semi with right cab is in the RIGHT lane and 0:57 and 0:58 establishes that white truck on shoulder has 4 wheels in the right lane. The white truck is at fault for this accident because the white truck did not completely pull off the roadway. The black truck was driving in the right lane and stopped to avoid an accident. The RV did not stop: on many of these shots, the black truck looked stationary but because the truck is big, the RV driver may have thought it was moving. Remember that when you are driving 60 miles per hour you are actually traveling at 88 feet each second so each second you are moving a little more than two lengths of that motorhome.

This is a simple case of spatial awareness, or actually lack of. I see it all the time where drivers are riding the right line and not even aware of it. If you have good spatial awareness, you can thread a needle with a semi, or in this case miss hitting one. Not faulting the driver, it probably never even occurred to him that was the issue. I have been in situations where traffic suddenly came to a halt, and with the sun at certain angles, sometimes you don't see the tail lights until the last moment. @@SolarSupplyHouse Wow - so something nefarious from the white truck - perhaps uncalled for panic from a merging car due to his inattention, etc. Glad you tuned in as I wanted to ask something of you in terms of injuries as I used to be a product developer for OEMs and safety was always my calling card. It looked like the driver's seat had some gear and such in and on it - how did you fare as to injuries? It looked like the RV's A pillar just disintegrated and perhaps things above the front seats came down? Or was that tossed in later. Also, you did WAY better in your maneuvering than another recent (I-5 I think) RV impact where the driver completely lost control after a minor graze and heavily contacted the K barrier. There was no followup on that video but looked like serious injury was part of the outcome. So, kudus on your handling - these things are generally very poor in emergency evasive maneuvers and you kept yours pointed in the right direction and on its wheels.

Nice at fault collision, failure to maintain assured distance ahead, your rapid Lane change = failure to yield right of way. Your at fault x 2. Thank you for posting, maybe others can learn that RV's don't drive like smaller passenger cars. At least no one seriously injured.

Now you can see how "good" your insurance is. Thank god you were alone and not hurt.

I'm glad that you are OK , BUT having driven trucks all over europe for 40 years I've seen dozens of accidents where people do not leave themselves enough stopping distance . The truck stopped without hitting the vehicle in front of him because he had left enough stopping distance
