I am so very grateful that you posted this video, your voices were in my head when I when to the gas station today. I was pulling away from the pump and about to make a somewhat sharp turn and just as I was about to turn this video popped into my head and I looked back and sure enough I would have hit the post and possibly even the pump if I would have turned then. You saved me from making this mistake. Thank you so very much! I'm so sorry you experienced this but so glad you shared your experience.

To see this candid reaction to the accident is incredible. I’d also like to say that the reaction you guys had is something I strive for in my relationship with my wife. No blaming. No screaming. Just two people upset at the situation. Not each other. Just amazing stuff. Anyone that’s been angry at their significant other for something they did on accident, knows how important this is. No one wants to do that. They just react. Thank you so much for this.

I drive 18 wheelers for a living, and getting a CDL A license and then completing training takes several months before a driver should go on the road as a Solo driver. The reason for this is of course driving a rig that weighs 80,000lbs and is 75 feet long and 13' 6' high requires a lot of training to drive safely. I feel that anyone that is allowed to purchase a tow behind camper trailer should be required to undergo a training course, and then be required to get some sort of endorsement on their license. Inexperience is dangerous and costly. Sorry for my thoughts, but I see way to many inexperienced people driving these tow behind trailers on the road, and many are pretty bad and unsafe at it

My first job as a truck driver I had safety director that gave me probably the best driving advice I've ever heard: Never get in a hurry to fall. It didn't hit home until I hit something and he asked me what happened. I thought for a second and said "well, I got in a hurry." You are absolutely right. When you are in a hurry to eat, in a hurry to get to bed, or for any other reason, you will make mistakes. Most of the time the best thing you can do is just slow down or stop.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I know it is just a sick feeling when you damage your RV. We are RVers, and my husband scraped our 42 foot high end 5th wheel along a stop sign turning out of a campground in Missouri. Thank goodness nothing was really ripped open and we could continue but when we got home it was in the shop awhile for repairs. So glad you two are OK and have such good attitudes!

I lost my wife (co-pilot) last year to cancer, so pulling the RV single without a good pair of eyes in the passenger seat is taking some getting used to. I really have to plan fuel stops far more carefully. Especially with a gas truck, I have to use the regular pumps. I have hit a few of the Pilot RV pump islands which are great when you can find them. Usually I'll Google Street View them first to make sure there is enough "swing" room to get in and out. Glad I only have a 29' RV trailer.

Remote Back Up Camera might have prevented that. You are correct about gas stations, and they should post the heights of what can pass under their canopies right on their canopies. Of course, as a trucker, I had to always keep that in mind as well as ground clearance. I've never had one accident trucking, because I always kept safety first in mind as well especially when it comes to road conditions. Many things to consider. The lowest bridge I've ever been under was 13' 7," but I still stopped to check especially after they laid down new pavement. I hope it doesn't cost too much to repair for you both. Safe Journeys!

Just saw your video my wife and I did the same thing with our brand new 344GK. We picked it up in the morning and drove to our very first park. Pulling into the site took the turn to wide and did the same thing to the back end of our trailer. Did not even know that I had done it until I got out of the truck and saw the scrape along the back end of the trailer. When I saw this I thought it was done at a gas station when we had gone in to eat in the parking lot. I had then realized I had cut the end of the trailer on a tree when making the turn into the site. After a $7000 insurance claim it was fixed lesson learned. Tired and hungry, two things to avoid while traveling. After returning from a 2 week trip, washed both the coach and the truck in the heat. Very little water and also hungry, we were beat to say the least. Drove to the storage place and I drove over a curb which I never do because I really watch my mirrors but I was tired, hungry, cut the corner too short, bounced the left side of the coach. Parked and went inside to find the microwave glass turntable jumped out and shattered. The TV was way out from it’s parked position and TV drawer opened all the way. Lesson learned, tired and hungry is a recipe for bad things to happen. Thank you both for posting this very important video!

First off, YOU ARE NOT A BONEHEAD!! and I am glad that no one was hurt! Secondly, thank you for the honesty and "up-front-edness" that y'all have had. A LOT of people that have RV videos would rather DIE than post a video like this one! This is basically a home (I know that that rig was close to, if not, over $100k). So you basically totaled your house. This would be like someone wanting to save a buck cutting down a HUGE OAK TREE in their front yard but instead of calling a tree service to do it, YOU cut down the tree yourself...and had the tree come down on your house. My heart aches for you! Thirdly, as a "Paul" myself, this took on a personal meaning for me..lol. We are taking over my mother's 5th wheel in a few weeks in California and driving it back home to TN. The ONLY places that I will be stopping for gas will be Pilot/Flying J gas stations! I don't give 2 damns about price. Unlike you, Paul, I am not a "cheapskate" (however thank you for admitting that you are one..lol.) and I will gladly pay the higher price for convenience and knowing that I can pull in/out without a second thought. You are genuinely nice people and I am SO SORRY that this happened. I can say with confidence that if the same thing happened to us (after the wife caved in my skull) that we'd get it fixed, learn as you did and get back out there to see our grandkids! Good luck in the future and thanks again for the honesty!

Hi Paul! We LOVE you!!! Thank you a million for your comment and kind words. Yes, my Paul did indeed save 99 cents by having us stop here instead of the truck stop! Pulled off an awning, Left the black tank with "a bit" of residue which hardened, blown out the self leveling valve on our NEW camper. Glad to see you got it atleast on the road and no injuries! I sent him this video in his email this a.m.

I always say, laughter is the best medicine. One of my favorite old movies is with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz called the Long Long Trailer. Taking a long cross country trip in their bran new trailer and just after their wedding, they had to learn on the go how to handle their big rig and learn to get along together while doing it all. If you like Lucy and Desi you'll love seeing this. You'll laugh your problems away.

I say this without malice, but I believe that you two fall into that group.

First, you are not a bonehead. I feel like I'm looking at myself. Just yesterday, we got lost ( GPS got us there), we come to a dead end road,,,,, I was tired, hungry, and stressed. Trying to find a Harvest Host location, in the bayou in La. Watching your video was sooo right on, Thank You. Hang in there, I hope things turn out better for you guys. Ps,,,, you may have saved our marriage

Thanks so much for your kind words Jamie. Funny that you should mention the GPS issue, Liz and I have been having that very discussion of late. Google Maps has been all kinds of wrong lately and it's only sheer luck that we haven't had the 5th wheel in tow when it's happened. We've been looking into getting a Garmin or something like it to replace the on-line stuff.
I'm also happy to hear that in some small way we helped prevent a potential catastrophe in your marriage. P.

You're not a bone head. You're human. We all are. And we ALL make mistakes! GIANT ones. And they probably won't be the last ones we make, so just take a breather. As a fellow RV'er, I can certainly empathize. Appreciate your willingness to post this vid to help others learn from an unfortunate, expensive, and obviously stressful mistake. One of my rules is to use a spotter when in tight places, plus we learned long ago to use truck stops whenever possible (even though some truck stops are not ideal in other ways).

Thank you so much for posting this! And THANK YOU for not letting your pride keep you from posting this.
I am what would be considered a "professional driver" and have been trained in multiple disciplines from EVO (Emergency Vehicle Operations) to being CDL certified with all endorsements.
I HAVE, YOU HAVE, AND EVERYONE who drives makes these mistakes. It is when you think you are a great driver who doesn't make mistakes, when you make the worst ones. What distinguishes good drivers from great drivers is the humility to own your mistakes and never think you are too good to make any more.
I watch these videos to remind me to pay attention and remember that I am not too good to make mistakes. Because mistakes with these vehicles can be expensive, or even worse, deadly.
My wife and I are close to retirement and considering the full-time, or at least most-time, RV Life. Your teamwork, humility, and dedication to stay safe are inspiring. I am scared of the realities involved in full-time RVing, but you both, and others like you, give me hope that we can do it too.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND HAVE SAFE TRAVELS!👍👍👍
