Hey guys, I might be able to help with the front tire issue, ive had lifted trucks most of my adult life, anytime you raise your truck or widen your stance with wheels you need to adjust your caster and camber. The shims are inexpensive but the install is whatll get you. The wheel isn't balanced correctly, those wheels and tires have to be roadforce balanced, I'd take your truck to an offroad specialist company and have them do it for you and ask them to realign your front end. Your generic tire and wheel guys prolly aren't going to know all the ins and outs of this setup. One last thing to consider, I would highly recommend you getting some airbags to level out your truck if you have too much weight in the bed it might be slightly lifting your front end up causing your suspension to compensate, and start chopping the outside, that can be dangerous. Hope that helps, thanks for the videos.

Live in the PNW, backing rv’s over 50 years now. Without a doubt the toughest places I’ve ever encountered were in the upper east. I was 34’ and assigned a 30’ spot with two large trees on each side of the opening and an oversized vehicle to my 11:00. Numerous stabs at it and couldn’t do it w/o potential damage. Another time, similar situation. I got it in first attempt with an audience in the grassy area at my 12:00 in lawn chairs placing bets I couldn’t. They applauded me afterwards. Grocery store parking lots are the worst though.

Nice job backing in! We were in a terribly tight spot in Yosemite..........fortunately there was a full time truck driver from San Francisco who directed it in!!! It was hard for him but possible. All because a guy in a motorhome wouldn't take 10 minutes to back up 5 feet. He had his rig right to the road with a lot of room behind..... That truck driver was an angel

I purchased some collapsable traffic cones (on Amazon) and place them in appropriate places to help guide me into spots. I don't have to get in and out of the truck as often. People are often surprised at how easily I back into tight spots.

I've been camping since before i was born. My parents enjoyed camping starting in the late 1960's. In the late 1980's they retired and went full time. My oldest sister and her husband have been camping since the early 1970's. They spent most of the 70's & 80's full time. In the last few years my wife & I have started camping with our 3 year old daughter. This summer we spent 6 weeks on the road in PA, NY then OH before going back to NC. You two have come so far from your early days! Your overlook of the sites have gotten so much more complete. I might add that we use a Garmin 870 unit for professional drivers. I drove for UPS for 38 years. The Garmin, and google maps are the two always running- then satellite view on the google maps when needed. We were in Jasper Last year in one of the Beautiful provincial parks, and the site road had 2 foot deep ditches on each side. 4x4 could have gotten us in, yet pushing a bad situation is not a good thing. Carl, I drove 28, 40,45 and 53 foot trailers in door town LA and South Bay CA for 28 years and have had a 5th wheel the last 40 years and have never had an accident. The key is always take your turns as wide as possible and remember when turning and backing in, the turning ratio is based off the rear axle, not so much the back of the trailer.

The uneven tire wear on the rear RV axle is normal. Remember, you are pulling a tandem axle trailer where the axles are very close to each other. During turns the rear axle is dragged by the front RV axle into the turns, especially so if the RV sits a bit high on the 5th wheel hitch putting slightly more pressure on the rear RV axle. Rotating the tires helps expand tire tread life. As for the right front truck tire. That is also normal. It is not indicative of a wheel alignment problem. You live full time in your RV and your truck does more towing miles than non-towing miles. This means that a significant amount of your tire life spent during towing and this is causing the right front tire to see more load due to the way the engine/torque pulls on the frame, lifting up the front end of the truck. This twist action from the engine/transmission/truck drive axle results in an unloaded left front tire as more down force is applied to the right front tire. If you watch drag race videos on youtube, you can see the very pronounced action as the car launches from the starting line. The same happens to a truck while pulling heavy loads. If you do this constantly, you'll see uneven wear over time. You can try rotating your tires to help even out the wear, not just front to rear, but side to side to help get the most out of your tire life.

    • @HappilyEverHanks

So fun to watch you guys in the same area we were just camping in late August/early September. For the toll roads and bridges we have the EZ Pass transponder which supposedly ensures that you pay the lowest toll you qualify for. We did encounter toll locations where the transponder for some reason didn't register. Got a "toll violation" in the mail from NJ today where our transponder didn't read at the Ben Franklin Bridge. At least with the EZ Pass we should be able to dispute the additional charges above the actual toll. For directions we have been using mostly Waze but did hop on a free trial of RV Life for a bit of the trip. However, RV Life suffers from apparently not having any road closures included in its database.

And we'll hit the road shortly after with 3 senior dogs. Two are Bichon Frise and new to us after their elderly owner passed. The other has been our boy for 9 of his 10 years. He's a white German Shepard. Our adult kid moves out Saturday with their cat, and our 16 year old cat is on palliative care for cancer, so she only has a couple of weeks. We're putting the house on the market Oct 1st and then we'll be hitting the road full time when work is done. Mostly thanks to watching you two over the years - along with 4 others we like. We did the same thing. Long story short, we found many things on our brand new GD camper that needed repair before we could use it full time. Not uncommon. Therefore, I highly recommend that you rent a truck for a week and do a shakedown trip to really make sure all is well. If it has to be in the shop after you sell your house, you will literally be homeless. Possibly for weeks. Even if all goes well, you will have a better idea of what you want in a truck. And you will be much better prepared. We used enterprise truck rental (separate from the car rental) for about 100$ a day. The depreciation on a new truck is much more than that. Just not sure about the 5th wheel hitch situation. We have a trailer.

We had similar wear on our 5th wheel. The rear axle on the trailer was out of alignment. We didn't know that trailer alignment was a thing until until someone told us of their issue with tire wear. Took our trailer into a place in Salt Lake and they had us fixed up in less than an hour. Rear axle was off and causing the wear. Since the alignment we haven't had any tire issue. Something to consider as a cause before you have another blowout. Enjoy your videos

For toll roads we use Sunpass PRO (it has to be the pro not the mini). We used this all over the north east (pricey toll roads- but super easy to load money on my Sunpass account). I believe the only place that did not take the Sunpass was the Mackinac Island Bridge. Plus the lines through the tolls is faster if you have a pass. Safe travels!

So we’ve only been out since April & the worse tight spot was one where we got out to look & I asked if we could transfer our reservation to another campground. 13’ between two large poplars, narrow access road (we were brushing up against bushes on its border, a signpost right where the long box Ram 3500 would swing into. Hubs tried, we didn’t divorce, cut our loss & tried another one. Nope. Tried a different loop and found one we fit. Our fiver is only 30’…I said nothing bigger than a teardrop fits loop A. The next campground had two trees on either side & I had a mini anxiety attack! A retired semi driver popped it in like no own’s business. Hubs was just at that point at looks Lou’s & their suggestions that he said “you want to do it? Go ahead!” The guy gave us tips for future back ins. I’ve never backed it in, actually haven’t driven with it so I do know what he needs. Though this last one I did mention that he pulled forward far enough to make the turn.
I went back & took photos of that first spot! It was unreal how close the bushes & trees were to the road.

My best advice for anyone going to RV in New England is to camp in the country and drive into the cities/ attraction with a subcompact car (rent one if you need to!)

Loved this video, keeping it real. We don't have a big rig. just a small jayco feather lite and f150, but there is still nothing worse than just a weird angle on a one way or that one tree in the wrong spot so there is no room to swing. We also tow with our jeep when we have a shorter non highway drive and that can be a blessing getting into some of our Ohio forest camp spots. We've DEFINITELY had some camp sites where if it weren't for our short rig, I have no Idea how anyone with anything bigger than 24ft could get the trailer in. That's the toughest thing, we never have to worry about our camper length, but how many people end up getting to their camp site and it's just not big enough? A lot of the campgrounds don't make it clear how big the actual parking spot is.

We stayed in that rv park 3 years ago. Hit a tree stump with our rv backing into the site, which was right around the corner from where you’re parked, so I guess they haven’t improved that yet. That back section also flooded, and several rv’s had to relocate. But the worst part was the septic-they had to come and pump it out every day or so because the water table was so high that they wouldn’t drain. But it was a convenient location, we drove over to Newport for day trips, and took the train into Boston. Ahh, memories.

We stayed at the Circle CG Campground in the summer of 2013. The trees made the back in site tricky, but the real issue was an electric line that went across the site and caught our 5th wheel roof AC unit. A Park employee had to get on our roof and lift the wire so we can get in. The mosquito population was also very robust. But other than that, it was a nice place to stay. Enjoy your videos!

Yes no doubt there are some tight back ins from time to time. You did what in my opinion is the three most important things though. First you pulled up and stopped and got out and really analyzed everything...from ground level, to branches and anything else that could potentially be an obstacle. Second thing was communicate well between you. We always use walkie talkies or cell phone so we can hear each other, and also very importantly you got out part way through and analyzed it again. It is great having a spotter, but every now and then the driver just has to see the situation for his or herself. Yes sometimes, someone needs to move a vehicle or someone needs to be patient a couple of minutes while we get in, but so be it. Getting in without any damage is key, even if it takes 5 or 10 minutes to be sure. Continued safe travels...

    Hey Carl,
I've been following y'all for years and love what you two are doing. In regards to the "alignment" issue for your GMC truck, don't waste your money on getting an alignment unless you feel a wobble or steering issue while you're driving. My Tahoe had the same issue for years where the tire's tread wears much faster on the inside of the front tires. Unfortunately, that is the result to having a CV axel versus a solid axel, like in a Ford or Ram. What you gain with the CV axel vs a solid axel is a much more comfortable ride. As my dad always put it "you ride on a Ford, but you ride in a chevy" lol. The only real way to maximize your tread's life on your tires is to religiously rotate your tires. I would rotate mine every 5,000 miles, but with as much weight that you're constantly towing, I would consider rotating them every 3,000 miles. Especially with how expensive tires are these days.
I wish you both the best and hope to cross path's with you some day.
