Why iPhones Slow Down After A Software Update

- If you’ve updated your iPhone to a new version of iOS and felt like it became slower, you’re not alone. Apple’s been accused of slowing down older iPhone models to get more people to upgrade, but that’s not actually what’s going on here.
Наука
I’m still on an iPhone 7. I had the battery replaced a year ago, and I make sure to leave at least 20GB of storage available.
With these measures it continues to be pretty snappy, even on iOS 15.4.
Yes 20GB is a must have to be free! I have SE2 and when I’m on 10-15GB storage left it just feels a lot slower compared to when it has around 20GB~ free. Even tho I’m on 14.8.1 it still happens a lot.
The one good thing about these home button SE models, is that will likely help keep updates going for older home button devices like the 7 for many many more years. Though I did have a problem for like a year where my home button would hardly recognize my finger. It was real annoying having to punch in my code every time, though it's been working fine for 6 months now. Did you ever have that problem?
ohh free storage is good idea xD im full full full
@@maek555 why dont you buy the SE 3?
@@The_real_paill_neverdies because he has an se 2 and that doesn't make sense when apple gives you 5 years of upgrades .. plus the se 3 just has incremental upgrades like processor, battery and 5G. Nothing game changing imo.
Actually, some people recommend you change the battery on your iPhone ever 30-36 months. Also, be aware that if you upgrade to a new iOS version, your phone may be "reindexing" certain code for a couple of days as a gets used to the new version of IOS, causing slowdowns. If you phone is still lagging after a couple of days, it may be time to get a new battery installed.
That’s what mine did. It slowed way down for a few days, but it’s a lot faster again. I never had an upgrade do that, or maybe I just didn’t notice, I use my iPad more than my phone.
actually it doesn't slow down your iphone. new updates are always gonna include new features and new stuff so basically when you upgrade your phones is gonna use more of the CPU and ram because of the new features and new stuff that are running there for your phone gets a little slower every year. that's why apple releases new phones every year. so the updated processor could handle all the features in the software. if this is something you can't understand sorry your stupid. not just apple does this. every company that makes hardware and software is on the same boat. this is what exactly happens. it has nothing to do with what you read on the internet about codes my friend
I don't know if anyone is willing to buy iPhone batteries and then open up their iPhone to swap them that often. I mean, some people don't even upgrade the batteries in their smoke/CO detectors every 6 months as suggested and those batteries are super cheap and power a device that will literally save their life. Also I have tried to replace a battery in an old iPhone, not my main phone and found out it is hard to do. I screwed up somehow because the Touch ID stopped working. This is why people go to the Genius bar or just give up and upgrade their phone anyway.
@@uthmanbaksh3530 It’s 50€(60$) to change the battery in authorized resellers so I think that’s not a big price to pay for 2 more years of using your iPhone with genuine battery
I got my iPhone XR in June of 2019 and since then my battery is at 94% capacity, I take care of my battery and so should y’all
Has Apple ever heard about software optimization? They can easily optimize their OS to demand less power from the battery if they want to. You don't have to defend every Apple decision. I own 4 Apple products but still don't get their actions sometimes, like removing charging brick from the package.
Bro chill man
Theyre actually better optimized at the cost of speed and internet usage.
Dude you deserve more likes.
@@nikolasgunadi765 "cost of speed" its not optimized then. Optimization is making something more efficient without compromises.
Apple had a choice of making the iPhone more expensive or removing the brick. They chose the latter so that people won’t complain about Apple charging too much for an iPhone. And here you are complaining
Maybe instead of ‘your battery and hardware can’t meet the demands of newer operating systems’ it should be that newer operating systems don’t demand so much from your processor. I understand that technology progresses quickly, but it’s ridiculous that a processor made 3.5 years ago like the A12 Bionic would struggle to keep up with running iOS 15.
Laughs in A10 bionic, and 128GB storage
Unfortunately, Apple upgrades their chips heavily each year and chooses to create features that focus on those chips. The A12 Bionic CAN easily run those new features, it just requires the battery to not be degraded in the 80-85% range. Apple also doesn't want to dis-include those features for older phones, even if it means the slowdown exists for devices with a degraded battery.
I have an XS and it's still runs like butter even with the iOS 15
Seriously considering buying an iphone, and unsurprisinglg this channel was recommended. After several videos from this channel I've concluded that Apple can do no wrong, and despite being a for profit corporation the reason is never about profit.
This channel simply repeats Apple's rhetoric with no actual testing and benchmarking on their claim. Total waste of time.
Can somebody with iphone xr fact check if their phone is slowing down by ios 15?
I don't see any lagging on my original SE running iOS 15.4. Actually, it gets better with every update!
Same with the iphone 8. Why the newest every year when you can buy a m1 mac instead!
It got bad with iOS 15 and iOS 15.1 but it got a lot better with iOS 15.3
Well what’s your battery percentage?

"which is free if you have purchased apple care plus"-🤣🤣🤣 jokes like these
Right? It's only free if Apple determines there is something wrong with your battery. I had Apple care plus on my 12 pro max and I felt battery degraded fast but they ran " their diagnostic" test on it and told me there's nothing wrong and that the battery is fine. 🤦🏻♂️😪

One of my older iPhones is 1st gen SE, it is 5 years old from now on and it’s battery stuck at 87% of life.
Recently I’ve upgraded both of my iPhones the 13 and 1st gen SE to the latest 15.4, so far so good for both of them 😸👍
I'm still using my iPhone 6S and I'm on iOS 15.3, the latest version that I upgraded to a couple of days ago. I haven't seen any degradation of apps so far. I'm still using the 6S because I love the 3.5mm audio jack built-in.
I have the 6s, still saving up for a newer iPhone.. I changed the battery of it on the chirstmas eve for US$29 (PHP 1500) and it's currently doing a great job STILL..
For me it seems like my iPhone gets faster after the software update and run even smoother
Agreed!
Even my mom’s iPhone 7 with a terrible battery of 72% capacity is performing a lot better since updating to 15.4 this week.

After updating to iPadOS 15, my iPad 6th Gen felt slower, overheated so quickly and had worse battery life. So, I did a factory reset. After the factory reset, it became much faster and smoother. I tried performing a Browserbench Speedometer 2.0 and the score nearly doubled.
Yeah it's definitely suggested to perform a factory reset after OS update, mostly if the device is already some years old... I never do that, I'm on Android btw, and the phone takes awhile to fully take on latest updates, but I have so much stuff on my phone and that would be so annoying to perform factory reset every time.
Change the name of channel from "Apple Explained" to "Apple Justified"
They weren't "accused" of slowing down older phones. They did. They got sued. They lost.
Yeah, because if they didn't your device would heat up fast as hell. Maybe you should look into how hardware works, if it tries to put the processing power all at once like it's supposed to on a degraded battery old device, the device may even just break consuming all that power from a degraded battery. Fun fact! Replacing the battery in those older models, actually got rid of said slowdown! Wow!
@@bemwy I was just pointing out that they lost a lawsuit bc they didn't clearly state they were slowing down older devices, if they did it and told ppl, I wouldn't really care. But they did it without warning and France rightfully fined them. Maybe you should look in to how law works ;)
Also I'd like to think I know a little about hardware considering I took a course in it
and of course this was not mentioned in the video
True, but nooo… AE needs to kiss apples arse once again xD good lord
Thanks so much Greg for this video, in my school my friends have older iPhones and they asked me why is my iPhone slowing after a new software update, then I said idk and thank to this video I can explain to them why they are slowing down. And I will tell all of my friends to subscribe to this amazing channel.
personally I use iOS 13.4 on my iPhone SE 2020 with 89% battery health and it is a performance KING
But a lot of the new features with the updates can’t be utilized on older iPhones so it shouldn’t be related to battery health.
You weren't paying attention. Battery health is only part of the reason a phone slows down. The new OS is written for recent processors. If you have an old processor, you're going to experience slow downs. This is essentially the same issue for all computers.
I was referring only to the main point of the video which was battery health.
This vid is stupid and incorrect and I worked at Apple fo 8 years. Because the devices should begin to struggle even on the same ios if the Battery degrades. Since it is a hardware related problem the new ”powerhunry ios” should only run the battery dry faster but not slow down performance. Why make an update available for older phones if its more ”power hungry/slowing down” in the first place? They want to sell. I lied, we all had to lie about it but we knew that the spftware was slowing down phones.
@@amarg1650 Your comment is stupid and incorrect and you are such a liar. If you were to work at Apple for 8 years, you would have a signed contract legally binding you against any claims against the company after leaving it. Also, the software was not slowing down phones. I had an iPhone 6s running iOS 15.2 and it was SLOW as hell. Until I replaced the battery. WHICH IS HARDWARE. Not to mention, there's no way you worked at apple when you misspelled the words: for, iOS, power-hungry, software, AND your grammar is not even functionally correct. Random capital letters in the middle of sentences, shortening the word video to vid, and in-fact, calling the video "stupid" shows not only that you have no etiquette, but it also shows that you're lying, psychologically. Not to mention, if you worked at Apple for 8 years, why are you here commenting on a RUclips video? You should be out relaxing and chilling at home, watching a movie with plenty of new technology with your huge employee discount, and you should probably also be working, or retired, since you have "Worked at Apple for 8 years" in your resume. + ratio + L bozo + cry about it
@@bemwy It's not like all people working at Apple become millionaires and don't need work ever again or even if they were millionaires it's not like millionaires can't use YT and comment lmao, what a fouled logic here.
However I think he meant he worked in some Apple Store and madenit sound like he was an Apple engineer or something like that.
In addition even if what he said doesn't make complete sense, it's still partially correct, why is Apple bragging so much about their OS support when most older iPhones (4+ years old) struggle to support latest updates? It's not just a matter of battery, they talk about OS support and then they say they roll out the updates only designed for latest SoCs, that's not really great OS support. If you can't provide a good experience to your order phones, don't support them at all.
They sold iPhones with 16-32GB of storage till like 2016/2017 and they expect to still have space left to download the latest update, that's just plainly lying from Apple, nothing more than that.
Great videos! Keep it up!
Great info, I have the 12 and I was wondering if I should upgrade to the 13 because of performance and software updates, now I know I can keep my phone for a while!!! Thanks!! For the info!!
I did an experiment with my iPad Air 2, I let it on iOS 8.4 until the App Store closed for iOS 8. It was running perfectly, like day one, even 5 years later.
When the App Store finally closed, I updated to iPadOS 13, and it suddenly got A LOT SLOWER. Full of stutters, considerably slower to open anything.
So yeah, big annual iOS updates do slow down your Apple device, considerably so by the time the latest ones comes out.
And it's not battery related
This is precisely why I personally replaced the battery in my iPhone 11 at the end of last year, after only less than a couple years of use. I’m getting the same performance I received when I first purchased said iPhone. But, I’ve yet to replace the battery in my iPad Pro (owned since late 2019), without any compromise in performance and that’s because an iPhone is used far frequently than an iPad. We keep them turned on much longer than we should to stay in touch using LTE/GSM.
I literally have an iPad Pro 11 inch 2021 model and I feel this most recent update heavily slowed down my iPad, the battery drains so quick, and most of the time the 120hz refresh doesn’t even work and I’m stuck with 60hz, not to mention all of the bugs on the daily. I seriously restart this thing all the time. And all of these things are only in the most recent update.
what? i have ipad 7th gen but it doesnt drain that quickly

Not funny
My mom’s iPhone 6s is running on the latest version iOS. That’s 7 years of software support, I commend Apple on doing this. When we had her battery replaced it was pretty snappy like you said, although her battery levels have come down again but it’s still as snappy as my sister’s new Android phone and actually more reliable than that. I always knew that it was battery degradation and actually liked the fact that Apple slows down the phone if the battery has degraded badly, that way it won’t have a hard shutdown like other phones do when their battery is degraded. This was actually done in hopes that it would keep the phone running for longer with the same battery so Apple was actually trying to make the consumer retain the phone for longer not the other way around. Sadly they were accused for the opposite but in return we got more transparency for our battery health which is nice.
This is exactly right. I used to own many Androids before my iPhone 11 now. My Androids didn't have battery management so once my battery started degrading pretty bad, my phone would just crash, overheat, or shut off randomly and get in those nasty boot loops. Terrible. iPhones on the other hand gradually slows down while maintaining stability and reliability. I might replace my battery on my phone sometime this year. Should probably get another solid few years out of it.

Charge it from 20 to 85% tops.

I am on an iPhone XR with 88% battery health and around 55/64GB used space and my phone definitely feels slower than when I first got it. I may try wiping and restoring to see if that speeds things back up.
Don't upgrade your phone past 2 iOS of the original one your phone comes with. Phones are paid off in 2 years with most phone plans, and most people swap them out at the 2 year mark since they are "due for an upgrade". They slow down your phone to encourage this some more.
U know what i love that channel . Keep that quality
The same can be said about iPads. I would know, my iPad 2 years back suffered from these software updates.
I just bought my first iPhone a month ago so I’m still learning its behavior. But I have decades as a Samsung user and I had that happen to me where I update and it runs like crap for a day or so with lag and overheating and horrible battery life but 2 days after the update has a chance to accommodate my phone it runs like normal again, runs cool and last all day with no lag
My dad has an iphone 5s for almost a decade now and it still works which is just amazing
I noticed a massive slowdown when I upgraded my iOS to 15.4 and I have a habit of keeping phones forever. I still have my pink Razr flip phone. Why am I like this? I have an 11 and searched what settings to change to increase battery life. As long as my phone lets me play music while I work, then I’m happy. I don’t want to talk to people, I especially hate talking on the phone.
I’d like to see why the iPhone 13 (midrange ones) don’t have a telephoto lens. Also, I really think they should by now as even the iPhone 7 Plus from 2016 had one.
Diving deeper into this can cause some questions because voltage of a battery does decline over time but the processor works within a set parameter. Software updates could also remove strings of unnecessary code making it more lightweight and responsive.
AI is a big question for reduced performance but it's rarely seen as a hinder since those applications don't run continuously.
I'm not a Software engineer but do understand the basic fundamentals.
Running iOS 15.3 on my iPhone 11 with a new battery still runs everything as smooth as the day I bought it in 2019. Least for what I use it for.
Same evening, the update (22/08/22 Australia) the update on my MacBook Pro and IPhone SE 1yo both effected. MacBook won’t start up, iPhone se struggled from a no charge stand point to even stay on. I noticed quite quickly after update during my daily phone usage, wasn’t happy persay.
It’s definitely an interesting topic for myself. 🤔
I just updated to IOS 15.4 on my current phone, an iPhone 8. It runs even smoother than it already did. Very fast, very reliable still. It’s 4 years old.
The iPhone 6S Plus is under iOS 15.4 painfully slow even with a brand new original battery. So the battery is NOT the reason! The hardware is to old…especially the lack of RAM is a problem in the long run…if you would get 12 GB RAM with you 13 Pro instead of only 6…it would last maybe 10 instead of 5 years…and the 2 GB of the 6S Plus…well…are good for nothing!
Hmm… if it’s too slow, recommend turning off background app refresh
My 6s which is around 7 years old has the latest ios 15.4 and still works pretty fine
i noticed this on my iphone 6 many years ago before apple got sued and adding the battery health feature. My iphone 6 after 2 years+ felt slow and lagging, replaced my battery and it immediately felt snappy again. I was so happy and told my colleagues about it. Just replaced my iphone X battery yesterday and it's running so nice again😂
This is such a great channel. I always learn valuable new things. Thanks, greg! 💜
don't fall for this. apple officially lost a law case where it was proven they intentionally slow down old devices.
@@c0d1ngclips25 That's only half true. They did loose a law case. But only because they did not disclose the reason why they slow down phones with failing batteries (they do this to prevent your phone from crashing when an old battery can't deal with a sudden peak in power draw). They do disclose this now, and when your battery-health is below 80% they even provide a switch to turn this protection off.
@@Slurkz then why can't I choose which functions to dis-/enable? why complicate battery exchange? in case i'm unhappy with the performance of my device, why not let me downgrade or even let me run custom firmware if i intend to do so?
@@c0d1ngclips25
Battery management is very complex, and becomes outright unpredictable when degradation of your battery starts to happen, especially in combination with the millions of totally different custom use(r) cases, as you are suggesting you would like to be possible.
Apple simply can’t support all these scenarios. Literally: customer support would become extremely complex and expensive, just to cater the small amount of people that like to have a fine(r) level of control.
On top of that; allowing for custom firmware and OS downgrades (in combination with ease of use) would effectively kill Apple's ability to keep its high level of security, privacy and long sustainability in check.
Most people don’t think about this very often: but in essence; your phone holds your life. With that in mind I think one should look out for the ecosystem with the highest level of stability, privacy, security and ease of use. This ‘bundle’ can be very challenging and costly for tech companies to achieve & maintain. That’s what Apple excels at, and that’s what you pay for. (Although actually: if you play it smart, your TCO (Total Cost Of Ownership) within the Apple ecosystem can turn out to be significantly lower than the competition's.)
But if you want a much higher level of control, while you know precisely what you’re doing, and you enjoy spending all the time it requires to stay safe and stable: maybe Apple is not your brand.
For instance: A firmware flashed *FairPhone* could be a better option.
My 7 slows down and heats up a lot when I update, one ice cream and phone restart later and it's fine again. And kept getting better and better each update.
I have had my cuurent iPhone12 for 2 years now. I Kinda hope that the newest iOS updates don't throttle my device. I am not sure if I even want to upgrade to what Apple comes out with this fall, not that it will be bad but the iPhone 12 is still amazing even though its a few years old.
This is a little thing but. When I upgraded to iOS 15 on my iPhone 8 on RUclips, when flicking down from a playing video to recommended it lagged just a little. But it was noticeable. But later it’s gone. Dunno why I said this but here
I have a second generation iPhone SE and it has run perfectly fine after updating it to IOS 15. Most likely because the battery was at 92% battery health and which didn't put any stress on the device
Mine’s at 85% and it is still snappy
In case you guys are wondering why Android phones don't *mostly* encounter these issues, it's because you only get a max 2 versions from the factory version of Andrioid on your phone. Where as a iPhone 6 can run an OS 6 years later or more, not sure exact number. Like my mom's motorola came with andriod 8 and is stuck with andriod 9 with no newer updates (its a bit older one). and my dad's samsung that came with android 10 has android 12 but I doubt i'd get android 13

What about ipad because when I update every time I don’t seem to find any lag or glitches in the system although my iPad is 5 yrs old so can you pls explain why iPad sometimes does not have glitches in the system when you update and I appreciate how hard you worked on the video it really made me learn a lot more about iPhone but if you were to make a video about iPad I would love it even better thank you and stay safe!
This is actually true in most cases. And there's also the case where your phone's internal components are adapting to the new Software version. Like a student transferring to a new school. Give it time and it'll be feeling good again.
But if you noticed that it didn't after a week or two, then maybe it's time to change the battery.
Great video once again, Greg!
My 12 Pro is at 83%. I’m excited for my phone to slow down.
Good luck. I’m on an iPhone 8 and it runs like it was brand new still.
@@mrmrwayne9850 I actually upgraded from the 7. I would have kept the 7 if it wasn’t for my battery dying all the time. Since I got the 12 Pro, I opted to using my phone more, in turn is killing my battery much faster.
@@danielschmaderer Oh yes, that’s one thing to mention. My battery life sucks. I would upgrade but that’s way too much money 😔
@@mrmrwayne9850 totally understand. The premium phones are no joke with the $1000 and up price tag. Realistically, I would have been fine getting the nonpro version, or even the new SE.
@@danielschmaderer Understandable. I'm very envious of you, though!
iOS updates are so small though... iOS 15 didn't offer anything except like 1-2 new features. Its so messed up.
It apple business mode lock same popular app to run on newer version off ios so u can buy new iphone
I want you to make a video on the $999 iMac stand...I bet that's something you just can't find anything to support the price
My iPhone 8 performed worse on iOS 14 and iOS 15 even with a new battery. I replaced the battery just every year.
