- Bono previews an unfinished version of The First Time, perhaps for a journalist. The quality is sub-par, but it was probably recorded on a hand held recorder. Bono gives commentary on the song as he struggles to play, sing and make up the words at the same time. Does anyone know the source of this recording? I used to have it on a tape labeled "Spanish Zoo Radio" but have no other info. Thanks to whackjester on interference.com for the mp3.
What a Great Find! Zooropa album deserves a deluxe box!
Bono sang this version for a spanish journalist called Julián Ruiz. The interview was made in the Yankee Stadium in NYC, just several months before U2 played in Madrid in 1992.
Interesante!
I will never understand why people dog this man even his demo tapes are gold. Imagine the songs they recorded and didn't put out there
Wow! It's awesome how Bono is willing to perform the song unfinished. I love this!
I know very well the origin of this recording. It was recorded by Julian Ruiz (spanish radio presenter) in 1992 during an interview with Bono while they were turing their Zootv Outside broadcast in the USA. I remember that bono said he wrote the song for someone else to sing it, that´s why he sings it in falseto.
Later on when Julian Ruiz presented Zooropa on the radio he regreated that Bono changed the falseto voice and the faster tempo for the flater and slower version.
Interesante historia!
Cool. I love hearing the origins of songs as they are constructed especially U2 ones.
beautiful
one love
eu te amo
The guitar chords here are very reminiscent of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane." I'm glad that the studio recording of "The First Time" use more subtle, muted piano instead.
this song was recorded by Julian Ruiz

in an interview in 1993 (40 principales Radio of spain).
Bono explained this song was written for Al Green. But finally it was for zooropa album
STUNNING U2 DEMO!
OH MY GOD THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!
Hi, The Milkman's Tube, this recording was made by Spanish music journalist Julián Ruiz on a digital tape recorder. You can hear him say "yeah, yeah" and laugh. At 1.51 he says "falsete", which is "falsetto" in Spanish. This was first aired on a 40 Principales (top 40 station) radio program in Spain in 1992 or 1993. After the performance, Bono explains: "you couldn't get Al Green to sing this song...". This last part was cut off your recording. Bono wrote this song for Al Green, but he didn't record it.
Qué interesante!
Brilliant !
i appreciated the remark about this being a bit like Sweet Jane.
so, it's like Prince singing a Lou Reed number, in a way.
actually, i hear a bit of Jagger in this, too.
circa Beast of Burden.
Bono says this song is about "the prodigal son who left home and he's not going back." Deep stuff.
How many bands today and how many of us would have been more than satisfied with the very forgettable guitar riff here? Thank god Edge and the rest keep pushing and don't stop at just 'good'.
Si the edge
People ALEAYS say demo versions are better. In this case, you're all wrong. The album version is way more poignant. To me this is just by the numbers white boy soul. They might have realized that and changed it.
sounds like Edge on guitar. Bono can't play in time while talking to a journalist. Agree or no?
Haha I'm sure it's Edge.
i think it's Bono.
i think he can manage chords, sing, and chat at the same time, though not without mistakes.
of course, now he may not be able to play at all.
it's a shame.
+Baron Moritani It's Bono, I'm 100% positive.
It is Bono playing, he's also not talking at the same time though. Him and somebody are listening to the demo that is already recorded and Bono is just commenting on it.
Yes, it's Bono playing guitar. I'm positive because I heard this recording when it was aired in 1992 on Spanish radio by music journalist Julian Ruiz (from 40 Principales radio), who recorded this and was the guy interviewing Bono.
He was wise to sing it lower on the record.
Not really considering everyone wishes he sang it like this.
as a song writer you can appreciate this stuff
