I notice non Chinese speakers can’t differentiate between the SH and X sounds. I think the problem is actually the tongue position. For X you point your tongue forwards, whereas for SH your roll your tongue backwards. I hope that helps

Say "sushi" . Your tongue in general american english dialects, moves back to from s position to make sh shound. But to say sū xī your tongue barelt move at all. Youmake sh sound at s positoon. You can search the standardized name of t , the voiceless alveolo-palatal fricative (pinyin x》

As native Chinese speaker (Cantonese), I really think they really did enough good job on English translation in blackmyth. There are many cultural non-translatable pronounce and terms, yet foreigners could still gain good understanding on the storyline. If you really wish to know deeper, there seems nothing you could do except learning Chinese.

Just to add something, 妖魔鬼怪 or short for yaoguai is 4 different things, 妖(Yao)is animal that became magical, 魔(Mo)is human what became magical but evil ( When they are good, they are known as Xian(仙)or gods。 鬼(Gui) is ghost or dead humans. Guai (怪) is rare, which is non living things became magical and aware. like the stone mother in the game.

    • @Rebuswind
      @Rebuswind 4 месяца назад +4

Very good explanations. However, there are some information are not complete. 妖 is actually an non human being has been magical enough that can have complete human forms and can use many magic without magical artifacts, if they can not have human form or incomplete human forms or need artifacts to perform magic, they will be called 精. 怪 is not necessarily from non living thing, just need to be hard to find out what they originally are. I didn't play the game so I assume stone mother is 石矶娘娘? that would be a 妖 instead of 怪 even though it is a non living thing, but she has a complete human form.

I learned a while ago about Journey to the West and it's helped me learn so much about historical, religious, and cultural aspects of China.
I watched the Havoc in Heaven movie and the 1986 TV show and found so much love for the story, I like repeating words I hear to practice the sounds and tones and end up copying 老孙 when he says 师父师父.
I haven't played the game yet, but it's a shame 哪吒 isn't in the game, I like him alot. In the 北京京剧 his fight with 齐天大圣, 孙悟空 is fun and exciting with lots of acrobatics. We have watched the Chinese Odessey and next will watch 哪吒闹海.
谢都 for uploading a very clear pronunciation guide, now I can try and say every character's name perfectly.

I'm glad you like Journey to the West, but its underlying meaning is indeed quite deep. It's not as simple as it seems on the surface, with many hidden themes and controversial aspects.
Among the Four Great Classical Novels, my personal favorites are Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms; they are pretty much tied. I find Water Margin rather mediocre, with a smaller scope-just a story about a group of people rebelling and failing, with a bad ending. However, some people who appreciate loyalty and righteousness in the martial world tend to like it. My least favorite is Dream of the Red Chamber; it's just a tale of romance and everyday life, which I find extremely boring.

Sun Wukong's original text uses the Traditional Chinese characters 孫悟空, not 孙. The constituent parts are 子系 not 子小. So your explanation of a "small child" via 子小 is not the intended effect. Original text reads: 猻字去了獸傍,乃是個子系。子者,兒男也;系者,嬰細也,正合嬰兒之本論。教你姓『孫』罷。

@@dan339dan Indeed. The meaning of "子" (Zi) is multifaceted; it can also refer to an elder or a sage, as in "Laozi"(老子) or "Confucius" (Kongzi孔子). However, the character in question is just a young girl, and she doesn't fully understand many things. But in this context, "孙" (Sun) is simply a common Chinese surname. Back in the day, Sun Wukong's master thought he resembled a "monkey" (猢狲, húsūn), so he gave him the surname "孙(孫)."

Whoever translate 悟空 to "awakened to emptiness", it is a really bad translation.
悟 means realize, understand, comprehend. In Chinese, it is short for 領悟. In contrast, "awakened" means "realizing a hidden truth". In Chinese, it is 覺醒 (I think Japanese manga populated this word)
The difference is that "awaken" emphasizes "hidden truth", while 悟 only emphasizes "realization of something which is hard to understand" (not hidden).
空 is a Buddhist phrase, Śūnyatā, which should mean "(complete) nothingness".
The difference is that "emptiness" emphasizes "empty" which means "nothing to fill in something", like an empty cup, empty room. It suggests the absent of "something". While 空 in Buddhism, is just nothing, void. Although it is very similar to emptiness, but it does not suggest something should exist in the nothingness.

There was an extremely famous cartoon about NeZha a few years ago in China. I even saw it in a Chinese cinema without any subtitles, didn't understand the talk but the story is pretty self-explanatory. That was a good cartoon, I didn't know that the character is a part of the Journey to the West.
Also, I learned a lot about Wukong from my kids, the students I was teaching for years.
But I need to say the best Chinese myth in my opinion is the Hangzhou lake White snake demon and the village healer. A beautiful love story. I had to visit the Hangzhou lake and the temples around after that. It was cool.
