Ming-Na Wen is the only actress who is a Disney princess, a Marvel hero and a character from Star Wars.
Yeah... And she's the only one who won Disney Hat trick ( marvel, star Wars and Disney )
Mulan is the only Disney princess who is not royalty or married into royalty, and was never any kind of princess in her movie!
Was gonna say this! She’s basically a triple Disney princess-Im not sure if anyone else could claim this 😳 she was just given some kind of Disney hall of fame type award a couple years ago (what even is time now??)
She's also a Street Fighter.
@@MrHappyface I just watched that on Saturday. Where do you watch it anyway?
See, you can tell you're a better person than me, because I _totally_ would've called this video "Asians of SHIELD." 🤣
I laughed way too hard at that...
🤣🤣
LMAOOO 😭
Funny you say this because Maurissa Tancharoen posted a picture with this very same caption in the early days of the show 😂
lol the puns
Ming-Na Wen was in the original animated Mulan. She's a legit Disney princess. (She was also Chun-Li in Street Fighter.)
Whaaaat! Oh my god I've been missing out, I'll check that out right away. Thanks!
@@ChinesewithJessie And Jaying other daughter turns up in Season 7 (Diane Doan)and she played Mulan's daughter in Descendants the spin off with the kids of all the princesses . She is in Warrior in a TV series made by Shannon Lee based on a thing her dad came up with
Legit Disney princess? She's not even a princess. She's just a peasant that Disney put into the Disney Princess lineup. She was never born into royalty or married a prince.
She was also June in Joy Luck Club
@@SeanWheeler100 ugh people can be so salty...
I like how she totally fangirls immediately after finding out Ming-Na Wen was Mulan lol
I'd like to see Ming-Na react to Jessie's reactions. (probably should cut out parts where Jessie says she's not a fan of the new Mulan though)
new mulan was tight
ahh I loved mulan as a kid but ahh watching AOS I loved MAY immediately love her, then I searched up her imbd learned her name and was looking through her works and legit screamed and the whole room looked at me. I was like sh- she did MULAN!! Ahh she's the MULAN!! Love MING NA WEN!!
I choose to believe that Agent Melinda May is a descendant of Fa Mulan! And yes, Ming-Na Wen looks fantastic for her age! I think she started shooting the series at age 49 and it lasted 7 seasons so she would have been 56 by the time it was finished.
Small bit of trivia: Ming-Na Wen did the speaking voice for the animated Mulan and Lea Salonga did the singing voice (singing "Reflection"). Ming-Na's big TV break was being the first Asian to be a regular character on a soap opera in 1988. She played Lien Hughes on "As The World Turns" from 1988-1991. When the character of Lien Hughes was brought back to the soap opera in 2001, they had Lea Salonga play the role. (Ming-Na was playing much younger than her true age when she initially joined the soap opera, so that might be one reason they recast her role with the younger Lea. Also, I think Ming-Na was on the TV show "ER" when Lea played Lien Hughes.) In short, Ming-Na and Lea shared two characters - Mulan and Lien Hughes.
I kind of have this weird theory that Jaiying is so old that she actually once knew the real Mulan and the first time she saw Agent May she was shocked because she looked, sounded, and acted exactly like Mulan, down to the mannerisms and personality. She’s not a descendant- she’s a reincarnation.
@@yehudisfriedman8459 That's a fun theory!
Melinda May head canon accepted! I love that theory.
I first know of Ming-na wen was from joy luck club. Great movie.
Ming grew up being able to speak Chinese but she had lessons, around 5 years ago, to brush up on it because she was forgetting.
The thing with agents of shields is there is this one scene where Ming Na is speaking Cantonese and the person she speaks to responds in Mandarin. Unbelievable.
Is that a scene with Jiaying or another?
@@YoureRightIThink Maybe one of the scenes in the Scorch episode?
The scene with bobbi?
i do remember that scene, it was earlier season when she contacted a mandarin speaking cop and responded back in cantonese. I think ming na's native tongue is Cantonese but with hvy accent
Is it? Many people living in Guangzhou who are originally from northern China have learned to understand Cantonese but can only respond in Mandarin.
I haven't seen Brett and Chloe's Chinese Coca-Cola commercials in years. Good times. Thank you for putting this video together. AoS is one of my favourite shows and, now that it has been gone for over a year now, it's cool to see someone put their own spin on talking about it.
Oh, I couldn't agree more!
Ming-Na is one of the few actors who cross 3 of the 4 Disney branches: Disney Animation as the original voice for Mulan, Star Wars as bounty hunter Fennec Shand (live and animated), and Marvel as The Calvary Melinda May, only Pixar is left to conquer. Inducted into the Disney Legends Hall of Fame in 2019 along with RDJ, James Earl Jones, Jon Favreau, Bette Midler, Hans Zimmer, and others.
Chloe actually does have an english version of that song. My guess is that the English came first and the chinese one was mostly translated over.
You're likely right that the English version was written first, but interestingly the lip syncing actually fits the Chinese version more.
Chinese verison though, it gets stuck in my head more than the English verison lmaoo
@@ad_kk16 Maybe it's just me, but I was getting "Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle [Chinese Cover]" vibes when that part of this video played.
Nice to see another AoS fan. Also Chloe and Ming na do call themselves Asians of shield
Chloe Bennet's birth name is Wang. She is half-Chinese.
@@seraphimprince yes which is why them calling themselves Asians of shield is funny
Ming-Na Wen is such an excellent actress, hands down the best actor in the cast. The others aren't bad, but she's on another level. She may be "older" but you can see the experience.
I kind of love that as an "older" actress she was cast as the super-spy, bad-ass fighter, but she also had some very moving emotional scenes. The fact that she has that cold, emotionless persona makes it even harder hitting when she does show emotion.
i‘m sorry, the best actor in the cast? i love her, but no. have you seen iain de caestacker‘s acting? he is TALENTED!! obv, ming, lil, chloe are all amazing
@@joshuarobertson8866 yeah, like.. everybody? it‘s the film industry. have you ever seen an ugly actor? don‘t get me wrong, i don‘t like whedon, but the entire cast is massively talented. of course they all got better throughout the show, they were all inexperienced in the beginning, but i‘m pretty sure everyone auditioning for a show is pretty. otherwise they never would have made it that far
i love how this quickly turned into fangirling over ming-na being mulan
It’s really common to have a different pitch when speaking different languages! My voice is deeper speaking Russian and higher speaking French.
with Japanese, women are expected to have a high pitched voice in public settings unless they are late middle age (45+) . A deep voiced woman in Japanese culture usually implies some sort of vulgarity and even criminality, except in situations with close people like brothers or old friends.
@@SantomPh .........no. high pitch means cute. Innocence. Childness. They prefer the childish aesthetic over there. Most japanese women do not speak like that. It just means they dont cater to that obsession like half of japanese men seem to like
Yeah noticed the same my voice is a good octave higher when speaking English in comparison to my native German. I guess it's due to what part of the mouth is more used in forming the sounds of the respective language; so while english is mostly formed in the front of the mouth German is more formed at the back and involves a lot more gutural sounds formes in the throat
I think sometimes it's a cultural thing too. E.g. on average, I feel like women in the UK pitch their voices lower than American and Canadian women.
How you feel about Mulan is how I feel about Zorro. He is the oldest modern superhero from 1919 & even the creators of Superman and Batman acknowledge his influence 👍🏾😎
Yeah pretty cool that he was a Californio from Southern California, speaking as someone who is a native Angeleno. I think he was one of the first Heroes to have a secret identity.
And the guy who plays Zorro is a white European male instead of a mestizo or even a castizo.
@@NCXitlali And his sidekick is an Indian. Minorities always played sidekicks.
If a "modern superhero" is a character still in use in modern media, then "John Carter of Mars" appeared in 1911, and was used as the basis for the movie "John Carter" in 2012. Also "Tarzan the Apeman" is another Edgar Rice Burroughs character, and first appeared in 1912, and last used in "The Legend of Tarzan" movie in 2016. However, if a "modern superhero" refers to a masked character, still used in modern media....Zorro takes that honour (1919, movies in 1998 and 2005) , as all the others who appeared earlier did not wear face coverings to hide their identity! ;)
@@my-brain-ache5922 also movies in 1920, 1940, tv show 1957-1959, & 1990-1993
I'm also a native Chinese speaker (not as much as before since it's been years since I Iived in GuangZhou), and my reaction to this scene was pretty much the same. This is my favorite show ever and I love the inclusions of characters who speak what is a third childhood language to me.
Tu é pt ou br?
Same!
@@GlendaM. aparentemente ele é espanhol ou de algum país latino, mas definitivamente não do Brasil e muito menos Portugal.
Her reaction to Ming Na being 57 was hilarious. The actress is as old as my mom and I gotta say if old people still could look so young even in their 50s 🤣🤣🤣.
Note: Yeah, my mom always looked like my older sister despite me being the youngest child....
she makes me feel old. I am aware of her movies since joy luck club, mulan, ER...sigh
LMFAO Facts! I was surprised when I found out Ming Na Wen was 57. She looks young! She's beautiful.
I'm American Chinese and this was fun to watch. Also huge fan of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. made my own prop badge from the show.
I loved this video. I’m a huge fan of agents of shield and Chinese learner. Watching you get excited and emotional about all the same things as I did was totally relatable.
Ming Na is a Disney and Star Wars icon. Probably my favorite actress. She's awesome. Had no idea Chloe Bennet was part Chinese or that she had such an illustrious Chinese pop career!
If you saw my comment on the Firefly video, Chloe is a great example of how foreigners typically pronounce Chinese, even when they are technically "fluent." She can clearly construct and deliver sentences comfortably and they are phonetically and grammatically fine, but her intonation is 100% American. She pronounces them as if she were still speaking English, and that's basically how the actors in Firefly do it too. It's like they turned Chinese words into English vocabulary. Very interesting to listen to.
Mulan was so special to me growing up because it was the first time i could relate to a animation character.
thanks for making these, one of my go-to sources for casual 一些中文内容
your hair looks awesome, the color combo is spot on!
Totally random, but two of my favorite Agent May scenes are the ones with her mother and father respectively. With James Hong playing her father. Tsai Chin played her mother, as well as the grandmother in Shang-Chi.
hold on are they the same character or are they just played by the same person?
@@kwilesvolleyball2028 Just played by the same person.
@@kobaltkween oh ok thank you
in the first episode season 1, when Wen Ming Na tried to say 暴力解决不了问题 (violence cannot solve problems) in Cantonese...it was really contorted. Cantonese definitely not her mother tongue. I remember after she said that line, the villain increased the volume of fire and Coulson remarked something to the effect that her words did not help :-)
I'm dying at your low pitched "chotto matte!" So perfect, and so true that there's an urge to change pitch when speaking an unfamiliar language.
Loved agents of shield for the first few seasons. Skye’s language is amazing, I had no idea.
P.S let’s see more of your movies Jessie 😃😃😃
everyone's accent improves when singing, this is true of all people and languages and i have no idea why but it is the case.
so by all means, please sing, i bet you have a great voice!
....
I most certainly dont. I sound worse.
@@LilyUnicorn post examples please.
OMG, I often see your skits, but just randomly found this video and I'm SO HAPPY that you made a video about agents of SHIELD ❤
Ming Na wen is much more fluent in Cantonese I believe. She spoke it in season 1 of Agents of shield
Even there, it sounded a little off. I say this as a native speaker of Cantonese.
Ming Na Wen mother tongue is english. She said in an interview that she isn’t fluent in Cantonese or mandarin and that she only knows a little bit. That’s why her Cantonese and mandarin isn’t the best. But her accent is pretty good, it’s just the pronunciation that’s off.
Ming-Na Wen is the ultimate Disney Legend: Savior of China, Defender of Earth, and Elite Mercenary.
What I like you is that you are really honest for all the reviews while being modest! Pround of you.👍👍👍
I love your reaction to Ming-Na Wen 🥺❤️ she’s incredible! Been a big fan ever since hearing her as the original speaking voice of Mulan!
Mulan is my favorite animated Disney character (and one of my favorite real life people) so I was fangirling right there with you. Thank you so much for your amazing commentary ❤️
Great film! Thanks laoshi!
Your films are a great mix of so many different things, and I always learn something new.
p.s. I meant to say! Keep going. When you get the subs that you will do one day, you 'll have lots of films, and can easily put them into categories. e.g. Grammar lessons, pronunciation, etc.
@@AshinAsia Yeah I'm thinking about categorizing them too, and thank you for your always support! ❤️
@@ChinesewithJessie I'm not sure what category this would come under though... I was expecting a pronunciation type lesson, and turned into a superb 'youtube trip' type film. Great idea!
Hey Jessie, just wanted to say you are the cutest person I've seen. Personality, humor and looks! Great content, just discovered it last week.
Thank you so much!!
About a year after Jiaying's story arc ended on Agents of SHIELD, the actress turned up on "Supergirl" playing the character Roulette. So she's worked in both Marvel and DC.
Love your videos, Im going on a mandarin journey (o learn it) your videos help a lot, Mandarin is like music and it's written beautiful too, keep up the good work :)
Please react to May speaking to Scorch in the ep “girl in the flower dress”, and May and Morse conversing also (I forgot the episode name) but they were undercover. 😊
Ooh I love that scene it’s so funny
The episode with Bobby Morse is in the first half of season three.
What a fun video. RUclips needs more creators like you to make learning Mandarin and Chinese cultures fun. One thing I want to point out is that I am not surprised that Ming Na doesn't speak Mandarin well. Chinese is not one language, it's a collection of languages. They are not dialects. To tell someone you speak Chinese is equivalent to saying you speak a Latin language, it's very vague. Many of them are not mutually intelligible without training. Ming Na is a Cantonese speaker. many Cantonese speakers would sound awkward in Mandarin and vice versa.
Oh, man, Jessie is crying! Hey, thank you for sharing even though it was hard
I wish there was a channel like this for every language I wanna learn.
3:35 aww teary eyed
i guess you mean she voiced mulan in the animation?
Yes, I think that's what she meant. Lea Salonga did the singing for Mulan in the animated version.
Yeah, the song of Chloe probably was translated from english since it also has an english version
I love how you got emotional for about ur culture! 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
I found your channel from the white guy speaking Chinese video. I’m glad I did I love insightful channels like this.
If you want to react to a cool scene from this series, season 3 episode 6 "Among Us Hide" features a scene where Ming-Na Wen's agent May and Adrianne Palicki's agent Morse sneak into a bank by having May pose as a wealthy Chinese businesswoman and Morse as her interpreter. They use that to allow them to talk openly in Mandarin about how they're conducting the operation. It's pretty funny.
As a not native english speaker (latino american here), I absolutely adore your pronunciation/accent! It's really clear and nice to hear, easy for me to keep up with, it's a little detail that made the video really nice to watch
Everytime I watch your videos I laugh so hard, hahaha, you're so funny, geez!!! Love your sense of humor, the content you make and, apart from that, I liked your Rogue-ish dyed hair! ^^
Game-wise, I think I'm more like you because I prefer the storyline & how respectful and truthful they are regarding History/Mythology. It's funny how I can get so excited and emotional when I see other cultures (and my own) being represented correctly. It happened in Shang Chi as well, when I started watching them speaking Chinese, the respectful connection with Katie's family; his bond with the roots he tried so hard to deny (but failed), and especially with the mythological creatures. I was ecstatic, even though I just barely started discovering (head-on) the Chinese culture. And to me, even though I'm Portuguese, Ming Na is Mulan, she has all the right ingredients to be that strong, fierce, woman that faced it all bravely for her family and country
Chloe was in BigBang’s Tonight music video
OMG YES! Another fellow Agents of SHIELD fan!!!!
I enjoyed learning from you today. Keep up the good work. (I am not a bot.)
I would cry on camera for Ming-na Wen, and I’m not Chinese, nor a woman. She’s just that awesome- and funny!
My parents are from the Canton province of China. I've never heard of the story of Mulan until well into my adult years when Disney produced the animated feature in 1998.
Gaokao is SAT in China
Ela descobrindo a Ming-na Wen. Que fofa! 🥰
No cuz when you found she was the original Mulan your reaction made me cry 😢.
Ahhhh! You found Chloe's one MV. 😂 I met her at a comic con and she's a gem. Ming-Na being the voice of Mulan was the reason I went to see it in the first place. I was a fan from The Joy Luck Club and Street Fighter(it's trashy but Chun Li is my favorite character so I don't care) and I've loved everything she's done. For me she's up there with Gong Li and Faye Wong as far as my favorite Chinese actresses goes.
The way you went gaga over Ming-Na being the original Mulan! love it!
I wish you did Bobby too, there was a scene between her and May in a vault. I especially wonder how she was doing, because I'm Russian and her attempts at Russian were.. unconvincing. Really hoped to know about her achievements in other languages.
yes! agents of shield is such an underratted show
5:30 This made me laugh, because it's a very common phenomenon that's even funnier when you notice yourself doing it :) When I speak French, my voice drops to lower, sultry tones, but when I attempt Gaelic it rises into a much lighter, crisper tone. It happens with accents, too :) I'm no expert, but I think it has to do with your mental "role model" of your internal translator, is the best way I can think to describe it
That bit when she comments about her high pitched voice when speaking japanese. ❤
I love your videos
I also became a fan after finding out she’s THE MULAN 🤣🤣
That song sounds like "Genie in a bottle" by Christina Aguilera.
I can't tell you how tickled I am to think that someone who speaks another language can have an American accent. That's so wonderful. I'm wonder if the American accent changes depending on where they're at in America. Like can you speak Chinese with a Southern American accent or a Boston accent? Great video!
You can hear dialects through accents, and vis versa. Quebec French accented English is noticeably different from Metropolitan French accented English and I have heard Japanese accented Australian English that that was clearly recognizable as Australian rather than another dialect.
Ming-Na Wen was also in the movie "Street Fighter. With Kylie Minouge, Jean Claude van Damme !!
2:38 fun fact, Mulan fixing her hair often was modeled after Ming-Na herself because she would always fix her hair after recording each line in the studio :)
I was in the mid school when Street Fighter came out. I thought the movie was ok but "WHO'S THAT ACTRESS PLAYING CHUN-LI?" :)
There’s also a scene in season 2 or 3 where Agent May (Ming-na) and Bobbie (Adrienne Palicki) go undercover and Bobbie pretends to be May’s companion and translator. So Ming na only speaks mandarin in that scene.
Omg how did you not know I love the fact she voiced Mulan.
I adore Ming-Na, and have since Mulan 20 years ago. She was also a regular on ER for years.
Ming Na Wen also played Chun Li in the live action Street Fighter movie
There are scenes with Bobby and May speaking Chinese. It would be fun to hear your impression of that as well.
Can't believe Ming Na's 57 she looks so young
Wow, I discovered a lot of things I had no idea about from the AOS actors!
I'm not Chinese but I LOVE LOVE LOVE MULAN! I've loved her ever since I was a girl, I literally made a dress inspired by her Ping outfit, love her.
As far as my Japanese speaking, my pitch is all over the place because I got my accent from a mix of music (vocaloid, videogame, and anime osts), games, and TV shows. I don't go full shoujo kohai high but I go high and low A LOT.
Chloe was also in Big Bangs, Tonight music video.
She also was in the StarGate series
Your reaction to Ming-Na Wen's age is everything ! I has the same one when I found out her age. I think she is aging backward, I don't see any other explanations 🤔😂
I think I got immersed on your Chinese that the video ended LOL
不只是 Jessie! 我看迪士尼的花木蘭也感動到流淚
Ming-na was also the lead female character in the 1993 film The Joy Luck Club.
I can relate to the way you feel about Mulan and Wukong. We also get excited about how different media will portray our folklore. The Witcher is a great example of an interpretation of Eastern European folklore that I love for the way it is portrayed and how the story is told.
Everytime Jessie mentions Ü, I think "Greetings from Germany!" 😌😎🤓🤓😁😁😁😁🤗🤗🤗🤗
Your "near" has some chinese in ti too. Sounds like the chinese Ni from ni hao. :D
This was fun.
I really enjoy your videos. A small English nitpick for you, I noticed that at the end of your videos, you accidentally put an "n" sound in "enjoyed." It comes out "I hope you enjoyned it."
Keep up the great work!
I can't wait for you to do shang chi
7:05 is adorable.
LOVE YOUR LAUGH! Very total-like you laugh with your whole body! Please forgive me if that was creepy! THANKS KEEP THE VIDEOS
COMING!
The first clip you view is from Season 7 (the time travel season)
2:36 - 4:55 That part is very adorable
I'm a big Ming-Na Wen fan. My favorite part of the live action film was when she did her cameo.
After watching this, I was wondering if you'd think about doing a similar video for Firefly? I've always been curious what the phrases they say actually mean (ya get the basic jist of it through context) and if it's actually how it pronounced.
Ah someone else suggested that too, I'll definitely look into it, thank you!
Oh god, the pronounciations in Firefly are super terrible. No one is even trying.
Loved Ming-Na Wen on The Mandalorian...
Please not uh-oh Chloe hates the song now. I find it so funny how embarrassed she is of it.
Ming-na was also in "Street Fighter" as Chun Li
7:21 你是风儿, 我是沙。。。 isn't that the lyrics from the song of the drama "princess pearl" or 还朱格格?
Beautiful and new subscriber
"I've got a goosey-bumps!" I'm calling them goosey-bumps from now on XD
