Ford BlueCruise: Better Than Super Cruise?

  • How well does Ford’s new hands-free driving aid actually work? We just put it to the test and it functions as advertised, with a couple caveats.
    Written & Presented by Craig Cole
    Produced by Nick Miotke
    BlueCruise is Ford's latest and greatest advanced driver-assistance feature. This technology, which is available on select vehicles, enables hands-free motoring on certain sections of divided highway. I put this Super Cruise imitator to the test on a nearly 700-mile round-trip drive to Northern Michigan and the results are positive -- with a couple caveats, of course.
    BlueCruise basics
    But first things first, let's cover what BlueCruise is and what it is not. This technology is a hands-free driving aid that only works on approved, divided highways, so-called Blue Zones, of which there are about 130,000 miles of in North America. The system can accelerate, steer and stop the vehicle as traffic and road conditions dictate. In simple terms, think of this as a hands-free version of adaptive cruise control with lane centering.
    Of course, BlueCruise does not make your vehicle fully autonomous. When engaged, you cannot take a nap, play Wordle, organize your collection of superhero action figures, anything like that. So, don't even think about whipping out your phone. There's a surprisingly sensitive driver-monitoring camera system that makes sure you're looking ahead and paying attention, because you have to intervene if the system needs it.

      @@PhillipStewartYYZ yes but if GM is constantly mapping roads for changes and new highways the way Google Maps is constantly photographing street views it makes sense. Three years free is long enough for customers to not want to do without it and be willing to pay for it. And for people who do 3-year leases they’ll never have to pay for it.

    At 130,000 miles of road compared to the 4.6 million miles of public roads in North America, this works on approximately 2.8% of roads, compare that to 4.3% of roads for GM super Cruise, and again compare that to about 50% for Tesla autopilot.
    As long as Ford and GM insist on premapping their roads, these features will remain a complete joke

    • @ShadowRaptor8
      @ShadowRaptor8 2 года назад +5

      You have to normalize that percent by utilization though. I’m willing to bet that the small 2.8% of roads that are pre mapped probably see up to 50% or so of all traffic. Whereas sure while every cul de sac and back road won’t be premapped, they’re used by a much smaller portion of drivers.

    • @Green__one
      @Green__one 2 года назад +3

      @@ShadowRaptor8 the published maps disagree with you, based on my usage around here we can change these percentages, Ford 5% GM 10% Tesla 99.8%. the reason for the huge boost to Tesla but not for Ford and GM is the insane decision to geofence. Geo-fencing makes this a useless feature.

    You have misinformation on enhanced supercruise. You don't need to press the blinker lever for lane changing. Lane changing with supercruise is autonomous. It senses slower traffic, turns on the blinker and makes the lane change. It also goes back to the slower lane if it senses traffic coming from behind.

    If you are going to do a video about BlueCruise then please take the time to be factually correct in your presentation. As to the Mach E you mention the Comfort & Technology Package being an option to get BlueCruise. This is only correct as to the Select trim of the vehicle, it is standard on the California Route 1 as well as the Premium trim levels. You are correct however that it is an option on the GT trim level so guys, step up your game and do a little research before jumping in front of the camera!
