    I own the Mach-E, 2021, have 43,000 something miles on the clock so far. You are testing a new version of Blue Cruise that a large majority of people don't have in their car, myself included. So I can't speak on the version you are running, but I do find the current version tends to hug the right side of the lane, and I hate it... Having 100% hands free driving is pretty cool though, no "put pressure" garbage like the other makers do.
    I still believe Tesla's overall software package is far superior to Blue Cruise. I've actually been thinking super hard about trading in my MachE for the Model Y.

Also, I've had my Tesla Y/LR for 3 months, and only today noticed that it edged slightly to the left side of the lane while passing a truck. I wasn't sure if I was just imagining it! Thanks for the confirmation it actually does that.

    I may have missed it, how was interior noise levels between the two? Was there a clear winner? For passing a large truck, there is a menu option in the MME where it will move slightly off center to give you more room. You do have to toggle it though.

    I respect your scientific method. Like you said I gone from regular AP to enhanced AP to fsd 11.4.4. Fsd is a huge improvement over the basic in phantom braking etc. 15k is a lot for fsd but I would buy a used Tesla for cheap and add fsd to it. Life without fsd sucks imo.

    Great test! I'd recommend you test these systems (also Cadillac's SuperCruise and others that seems decent) in more conditions. Can we get tests during the day and night, dry and in the rain, with light and heavy traffic, in areas with roadwork, curvy roads (where BlueCruise used to fail), and so on? I think people would be interested to see how capable these systems are in all kinds of conditions in total, not just on a sunny day on a road with little traffic. I haven't see any RUclips creators testing self-driving systems in a systematic way like this yet! keep up the great content!

    I have found over the last year that phantom braking occurs far less frequently for me than in the past. Even if it does happen, it is more of a brief hesitation and is not affecting surrounding vehicles anymore. I guess it can be an advantage and a curse with Tesla trying to be good everywhere and I sure appreciate that you can use it anywhere with lane lines. Blue Cruise and Super Cruise do a good job in their approved areas but think it is a huge challenge to expand those areas for them.

    I purchased a 2020 used model 3 and the previous owner had paid for FSD. To my surprise, the price of the vehicle was around the same price as vehicles without it. When I checked the trade-in value, you are correct when you say you don't really get much more for trade with FSD. So you are also right when you say if Tesla doesn't really value their own software, why should we purchase it for so many thousands of dollars? Mine already had it but if it didn't I never would have purchased it either. FSD still needs a lot of work and makes many mistakes but I do enjoy autopilot much more. Nice video this was. Many good points.

    • @cyclopsvision6370
      @cyclopsvision6370 11 месяцев назад +1

      Tesla gives a value of 0 for FSD on trade ins because it's software, it's not physical. It's like trying to sell a Windows license back to Microsoft when you replace your computer. Why would Microsoft, Tesla, or any other software provider buy back a license? You are free to sell the vehicle with FSD to somebody other than Tesla that may value FSD for an amount greater than zero.

    • @cyclopsvision6370
      @cyclopsvision6370 11 месяцев назад +1

      The price for FSD is openly displayed. You are free to buy it if you wish, no one is forcing you to buy it.

    • @michaelsolivan7003
      @michaelsolivan7003 11 месяцев назад +4

      @@cyclopsvision6370 calm down, nobody said anyone was being forced for anything.. The point is if Tesla sells a used vehicle with fsd they sell it for more due to the fact it has FSD but they are not willing to give you anything extra for it when traded in. The FSD was already paid for but they are still willing to use it as a reason for hiring the price. Also it may give customers a reason to think about purchasing it if they would get a little something in return when traded.

    • @magnusauto7941
      @magnusauto7941 10 месяцев назад

      That's because Tesla turns FSD off the car and resells it to the next customer as an upsell. Now you selling private, well that's a matter you and your vic will have to negotiate.

    Nice review. I am on my second Tesla now and phantom braking is much reduced compared to several years ago, even though my newest car does not have radar. I do have a question for you. My first car had "full self driving" and my newest car has basic "autopilot", which like you I think is good enough. That said, one thing that neither vehicle seems to do is "avoid road hazards". Examples include potholes, small animals (squirrels, birds, etc), rocks, broken off mufflers, etc). The other thing that neither car does is give way to obstacles on the side of the road. Examples include cars that are parked right up to the righthand white stripe, pedestrians or bicycles riding on the side of the road, or the occasional building or tree that comes right up to the side of the road. As a result, I have to take over control to avoid these hazards, which then often results in admonishment by the Tesla autopilot complaining I have crossed the median at which time it punishes me by turning off lane-keep assist for the rest of that driving session. These issues are huge as far as I am concerned, as I live in an area with lots of parked cars and people/bicycles strolling along the side of the road, which along with lots of wildlife means autopilot is a non-starter. The lack of in-lane hazard avoidance is still a problem, even on major highways. Do you know how the most up to date "full self driving" and Blue Cruise handles these problems? Thank you in advance for the information.

    • @tomwojcik7896
      @tomwojcik7896 11 месяцев назад +1

      I test FSD 11.4.4 (the latest public FSD). In short, several of the issues you point out are still issue, for example FSD doesn't avoid potholes or random objects (rocks, mufflers, etc.) on the road. But FSD has gotten extremely good at handling other people (pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles), both on the roadway and on the sidewalks, etc, and both during the day and at night. Probably safer towards those than most human drivers already. In short, I think Tesla has prioritized the most important of the edge cases to avoid injuring others and solved those, and is solving additional ones one-by-one, but still hasn't solved other less common or less dangerous edge cases.

      Sounds like your not doing AP correct. Interstate and Major Divided highways don’t typically have parked cars. Pretty sure Ford Blue Cruise that is Geo Fenced locked wouldn’t let you enable it. Hopefully Tesla eventually Geo Fence locks AP to where it’s designed to be used.

    • @communityband1

      @@techyjames1945 We've really been misusing that term. "Geofencing is a location-based service that uses GPS, RFID, Wi-Fi, or cellular data to trigger a pre-programmed action when a mobile device or RFID tag enters or exits a virtual boundary set up around a geographical location. This virtual boundary is called a geofence.
      Geofencing is commonly used as a marketing and advertising tactic to pull in more customers to a brick-and-mortar business, such as a store. For example, a business can send in-app notifications on its own app when a user who has that app on their device enters a geofenced area."

    My Model Y stays dead center of the lane even passing by 18 wheelers. Scary AF. It only seems to move away if the truck makes a sudden move toward it. That come in handy a lot since I live in the south and diesel pickups often deliberately swerve toward EVs before “rolling coal”. I don’t understand it but I’m glad the Tesla side camera can see it and respond quickly so they don’t make contact.

    I own a 2021 Mach E GT Performance and the Blue Cruise I have is ver. 1.0 without lane change . It often slows down on turns when one pedal braking is on. It sometimes slows me down on turns I know my former Fusion Hybrid could take at speed (35-45 MPH). The new version has been shown in other videos to slow the car down on highway level turns and move away from trucks. All of these can be overpowered by the driver without leaving any version of Blue Cruise.
    I do not know what is going on with your 2023 but I can use lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control on almost all roads and speeds, even local streets, down to 15 MPH. The "almost" being it often fails on one lane roads. I just have to nudge the wheel every 20 seconds or so (it will warn you). You may have not have some of the settings correct for this mode.

There is an update, Blue Cruse 1.2 that does a lot better with the ping ponging and does bias to one side of the lane when passing a truck etc. It’s not integrated with your GPS and it won’t know you’re on an off ramp it’s still “dumb” that way. It also will not stop at lights or stop signs. It can only slow for a car in front on you. It’s great for highway / freeway driving but not in town or point to point navigation. I have a Lightning and never has that problem with the Adaptive Cruise Control even on major streets around town. It does work anywhere for me. I am not sure if the Mach E is different or something wacky was going on that time.

Phantom braking is most common around sharp turns, when cresting hills and going under bridges (Basically cases where it has trouble detecting the lane lines). However, it also occurs at random for no apparent reason. I've even had it happen right after I passed a semi truck; Basically brake checking it! Fortunately I keep my foot near the accelerator pedal so I was able to quickly accelerate back up to my cruising speed (IIRC, it dropped me from 75 to 60, but it could have gone further if I didn't intervene!).
    AP will always slow down when it detects bicyclists and pedestrians nearby. It can also slow down if detecting merging traffic and you're in the right lane. I don't classify those cases as phantom braking, but it can be annoying because in nearly all cases it's unnecessary. But... That's the reason you need to pay attention while on AP (And any other highway assistance system).
    Blue Cruise has gotten a lot better. It used to ping-pong a lot, but that seems to have been fixed. But I still can't get over how much the name sounds like the children's TV show "Blues Clues"!

      You’re right that phantom braking affects Tesla’s way more most other highway assistance systems. It also varies significantly between one Tesla and another, even same year models. It would be really great if Tesla spent more effort on preventing it, but I believe that their removal of radar and counting on vision only, was done too soon. My current car has cameras, radar, and lidar, and it almost never phantom brakes. Eventually maybe with enough data that Tesla is collecting from its beta testers aka Tesla owners, perhaps their phantom braking will be lower than everyone else’s. But for now, its logical that the fewer sensors you use, and the more you rely on cameras only, the higher the likelihood of false alarms. Btw, in my case driving during sunrise or sunset also left to far more phantom braking. I believe this is because Tesla’s cameras, like our eyes, were somewhat blinded by the sun.

      @@t1328 Interesting I never get phantom breaking on highways anymore. 2022 Model 3LR on FSD. I drive 136 miles to work on FSD without any interventions or Phantom breaking. With one exception. it's always at the same location. Then one day I found the reason. Off to the left side is a one-of-a-kind U turn traffic symbol light for the far right lane. When its red it thinks it's a stop sign for the lane I'm traveling. it's a peculiar looking light.

Also, Bluecruise is also just the hands free part, you still get Tesla -like hands on steering and adaptive cruise that works everywhere as standard on the Mach E, so it really isn’t a great comparison. I haven’t seen the message that it is not available that you were getting.

    The irony is that Blue Cruise is just MobileEye, who did the AutoPilot v1.0 for Tesla. Haven't watched the full video yet but it's difficult to really compare autonomoose driving systems. They're still in their infancy and we are mostly just comparing the "decision making" end result and not looking under the hood at how they work. There are HUGE differences between the Tesla approach and other companies.
    Most automakers are using a 'lane keeping' system that looks at lines on the road, and distance to the car in front of it. That's about it. So if you're only worrying about a couple of things the control logic doesn't need to have a very complex decision making tree, and it will tend to feel very reliable and predictable. There just aren't too many chances to screw up if the computers only mission is to 1) not run into a car in front of it and 2) don't leave the lane.
    Tesla has put in huge amounts of effort to build a 3d map of the environment using AI vision recognition, including modeling the path of every car and pedestrian in 360 degree view of the car. It does this over multiple frames and builds a detailed version of the whole world that it exists in. It's a very complicated approach that will ultimately prove more flexible.
    But in the short term, it has so many confusing factors that the computer has to deal with in the decision making logic. That complexity will cause the decision making process to make more mistakes until they really refine the '3D world engine' and the decision making tree to handle abnormalities. Once they sort out of the bugs, it will feel a lot more confident in many scenarios that other self driving systems will fail at, and not make all the silly mistakes like phantom braking, etc. It's just going to occasionally make dumb mistakes until it reaches maturity.

    Interesting, I have a F150 with BC enabled and use it all the time hands free. Although not perfect it's pretty good w/o touching the wheel for longer trips. It does not work on city streets, but Adaptive cruise will do the same function as the Tesla Autopilot. Also I test drove a Model Y last week and had Autopilot engaged, it seemed to wonder all over the place compared to BC, unsure why but it did it multiple times. Braking was late in many attempts compared to BC where you can set the gaps to leverge between cars. I'd guess BC has the upper hand due to use of Lidar here but unsure. We are on the verge of buying a Tesla soon so won't impact my decision, but the basic Autopilot was lacking compared to BC and from what I've seen/used with the GM Supercruise offering.

    For sure Autopilot wins today but you should run this test again with the upcoming BlueCruise release that is going to be much closer to EAP today. You should also rent FSD and test Autopilot with that turned on. They recently merged the FSD driver into Autopilot on the highway and it's VERY different. With FSD being $2400/year and BlueCruise being $700/year it's going to be hard for Tesla to compete even with the FSD being a lot better. The big question is will Tesla make the FSD driver, with the same restrictions Autopilot has today, available to everyone? Still I think you would have to at least pay the $1200/year for EAP to compete with BlueCruise but at least that might be justified.

I’d rather do the lane change myself! I bet this one irritant alone causes some road rage that you may have seen in some ‘Wham Bam Tesla Cam’ videos (I know, plugging another channel, but was necessary.) I know this to be true because I have caused some to honk at or tailgate me after some awful EAP lane changes. I’m sure the same happens with basic AP. Blue Cruise is a good system but it's hampered by the fact it is only approved for certain roads and relies heavily on mapped data. Autopilot does have an advantage for the things you pointed out. Enhanced Autopilot does Navigate on Autopilot so it would do all that standard Autopilot does and a little what FSD does and if you put in and address into the navigation it would have taken the exit and slowed down, exit off the exit and continued.
    The problem with bit EA and FSD is what you pointed out. If Tesla can grant you the ability to use this paid feature then you should be able to transfer it to another vehicle. That is all something that can be done on the backend easily. But like you aid, if they don't value it during the trade in then we shouldn't value it and pay $6,000 for EA or $15,000 for FSD. It the bare minimal I would just rent the FSD feature for $200 a month with the option of canceling when I want or canceling before trade the car in. Either way Tesla makes a lot of money off you you in the short and long term by renting and definitely makes their money if they sold the option to you. And I'm still unclear how is it you can "buy" EA or FSD but can't keep something you paid for. How that is legal is a mystery.
