Wonderful epsiode, truly a delight. Surprised there haven't yet been many more developer-focused interviews like this (though anonymity understandable). Great job and thanks for your work, Gloria!

Wow, I have two degrees in hard sciences and I still do not know what she is talking about, and it seems very critical to the maintaining and defending(?) the bitcoin ecosystem... So there are at present 5 "guardians of the bitcoinverse"? I'm looking into buying a bitcoin but this seems to indicate a possible, however complex, frailty. My simple understanding was that the "Algorithm" was so complex that that was in and of itself its security.
We need a bitcoin code freeze. No more risky features or potentially paid for features by big companies . Do these new features on LAYER 2. Layer 1 should only have security updates.
not every node is a full node, most are light nodes. full node stores the whole history of the blockchain, light node stores only the recent history of the blockchain.
when you first download the bitcoin core software, and when you start your node first time, your node will start from the first block validating all transactions, and there's an option you say you want to delete data after validating the blocks. Thus while validating bitcoin, your node will continuously delete data after it's being validated until you have the latest block, and now you're running a pruned bitcoin node. Which is fine, because you only have to validate them once to come to a list of available spendable utxo set.
Here's a definition of ossification- Don't rush upgrades that are going to have severe unintended consequences. There are massive taproot regrets in the bitcoin community. Gloria's confusion regarding the question of external software dependencies is concerning. "Don't touch the code" is not absurd at this point in time. If developers cannot be patient and methodical and miners cannot stay focused, then node runners need to teach them how to be.
lol. it was just a miscommunication not a lack of her expertise on the subject. and "don't touch the code" absurd. bitcoin is not a piece of art, it's never finished and it needs updates, security updates in particular.
I'm so happy that Gloria is so key to our ecosystem - It's people like her which need to be brought forward to represent our ecosystem, she's a fantastic orator. Great work Peter!
You must be a really bad software developer to have found anything valuable in this interview. She's clearly just regurgitating things. She has no in-depth knowledge in anything Bitcoin related.
for those that receive grants i would hope it's at least $100k / year since that's on the lower end of what they could be earning at just about any tech company
Thank you for talking about this WBD! I've wanted to know more about the release/packaging process for the software itself. This context helps explain a lot, but I have lots more questions now as well. Great episode, and awesome to have a core developer on.
Should core members be exposed? Risk of personal safety? Attacks on BTC network could comprise an attack on core members? They could be physically threatened or compromised?
Gloria, thank you so much for this interview. I think there’s a lot of confusion around what is and is not possible for Core, and these discussions are so helpful.
If ordinals are basically trying to assign a unique number to a sat, doesn’t that mean a single sat needs to be transacted in order to do that, and in that case wouldn’t the dust limit prevent it? Or would they send the minimum sats above dust limit and assign Numbers 1 to 1+n to the sats in that transaction?
51:55 i think it shoud be the case in bitcoin that the probability of a pending transaction being added to the next block is not just a function of its fee but also a function of the time it has spend waiting in the mempool. eventually a low fee, long waiting transaction should outweight the high fee, new waiting transaction. i believe this would be more just.
she probably started very small, with some minor pull requests, with reading the code. it hasn't happened over night to be where she is. plus she is good at her job. like really good.
No, the Bitcoin never leaves your wallet in that case. After two weeks of not being included in a block, nodes will start to drop your transaction from their mempool. You can then resend your Bitcoins somewhere else, this time paying more attention to the fee. Or, if you don't want to wait the two weeks, you can send again immediately using RBF (Replace by fee) to increase the fee on your original transaction.
she answered that with you can double spend it, if the transaction was not been used in a block, as far as I understood her. not sure if you also have to increase the fees for that 2nd transaction. A miner is incentivesed to put the higher fee transaction in a block and leave the lower fee one in the mempool.
This small blocker contributed to stop poor people to be able to hold small quantities of Bitcoin. A privileged rich girl who has no idea how the real world really is. Bitcoin was hijacked by stupid developers that should never be maintainers.
wdym? you're being preposterous and disrespectful. you can hold bitcoin cash if you prefer bigger blocks. and she's an engineer not a tyrant. don't be silly.
@@stevenshedd3871 Lol, we already did my friend. The commenter is unfairly attacking Gloria, but it is true that she doesn't get that it was captured & that's fine. Hopefully one day she'll figure it out, although it's a tough ask in the social circle she's in, because she would be amazing talent to have in the Bitcoin Cash community.
Wow what a rock star. Love hearing from the core team. Keep it up.
With women like Gloria this lets me sleep well at night knowing her and people like her are protecting Bitcoins future.
Great interview & great guest

Great episode. Got a weird echo here and there
How do I run the node she was talking about on the laptop. The one that doesn't require 600 gigs.
not every node is a full node, most are light nodes. full node stores the whole history of the blockchain, light node stores only the recent history of the blockchain.
You could prune the time chain so it doesn't take so much memory

you can run a "pruned" node which doesn't require that much storage
Thats a pruned node. In the bitcoin conf set pruned=N where N is the max size of the blockchain in megabytes.
1:22:30 I also named ny dog Satoshi :)

Production note: utilize iZotope RX 10’s de-bleed module to clean the mics picking up what the other person is saying!
Is it a problem?
Thanks, more engineers and less monetary theorists on the podcast please 😁
I loved this episode! Out of curiosity, how well are bitcoin core developers compensated for the work that they do?
this is what great about Satoshi idea, for the betterment of society.

Do you mean, how much are they paid?
I know Gloria is much more intelligent than I am but the valley girl way of speaking doesn't make me feel very confident.
Sounds like a great opportunity to reevaluate your biases.
Lol, she is so cool.
holy crap just realized that we went to the same high school... she was a slightly better student though :|
don't sell your self short.
how can Gloria and I possibly be of the same species? she is so sharp and intelligent which makes her super attractive TBH.
Very interesting. Thank you🙏
huge respect for Gloria and all the core devs
Awesome video. She’s amazing. 👏🏻👏🏻👊🏻
You really can't go wrong with any WBD interview, all of them entertain and give great insight into the inner workings of Bitcoin

Bitcoin should have a privacy built in function to obfuscate transaction sources.
