+Judge Beard It is not hilarious, He is saying the truth about yakuza's unsophisticated melee combat, yakuza's melee combat is just beat em'up sh!t. He shouldn't compare yakuza to the likes of batman and AC because it is not a AAA game in the first place.
+Pinoy Ako Pinoy Tayo yakuza's combat system is way better than most of your known AAA games! And dont get me started on Yakuza 0's combat system. Dont tell me that pressing a simple button to counter and then mash is more sophisticated than yakuza's combat system!
+Junda Mane Arkham combat is fun and responsive but it's far from sophisticated, hell you can fight the normal grunts blind and still look like like a decent players to those unfamiliarly with the series, AC combat, at least when not on boats, has been ass, has always been ass, was somehow able to be more ass, and will likely continue to be ass.
Junda Mane guys I agree with AC combat sucking and Arkham gameplay getting the same and repetitive by the third game but saying that Arkham gameplay sucks is going a bit too far
+Odd Fella Taken from www.gamespot.com/reviews/yakuza-5-review/1900-6416325/ It said "The tried-and-tested combat serves Yakuza 5 well, but without any type of counter system for self-defense, it shows its age." I..... wow....... I'm really getting the feeling this video is pretty rushed out the door.
I am 29 year old guy i have playing playstation games for past 15 years. And still enjoying only because of YAKUZA series. All other series i have played are get bored at some point. But this series omg what should i say they NEVER EVER get bored. Trust me friends you all should enjoy like me. Try this series.
So, I picked this up on a whim a few days ago. 15 hours in, and I'm only on Chapter 1-3. The richness of this game world, is insane. It's not that it has a bunch of extra stuff to do, it's the level of detail they put into the side stuff, that sets it apart. Taxi driving isn't merely driving around. You get a mini story with every single mission, and they're all different. It really cuts down on the monotony, and makes you want to keep doing them. I thought the text boxes were lame at first, but then I realized that it lets them craft all these little sub-stories without having to spend much to do it. Sure, you'll see the the same cutscenes re-skinned, but the stories make them all unique. This is true for most of the side activities. There is usually a story driving everything, and it really hides the repetitiveness of the gameplay. Ultimately, I find that to be the game's biggest strength. Giving personality to every little thing you do. PS: LOL at Assassins Creed combat being "deep".
decided to buy this online for the ps3 because I don't usually use it and wanted somthing ps3 dedicated and new. usually on the ps4- anyways DAMN!!! this game is frigging amazing!! seriously I never tried a Yakuza game before and I'm 39 years old and gaming all my life. and I lived in Japan for 14 years. 1998-2012. buy this game!!
+Cesar “Isaac” Perez If you check out cutscenes from Yakuza 1, you'll know why they stuck with the japanese voices. Besides, a japanese drama with all those dramatic pauses is best left in japanese. Moreover, SEGA America is in such a financial crisis that it's incredible they got this game out thanks to Sony and fans for demanding this game be localized :)
+Lucas “Mystic Fox” Guerra Why he comparing Yakuza and Batman?!!Not the same type of games. You have more freedom in Yakuza than Batman, you can buy stuff, play arcades etc.
Did people just not understand Yakuza's combat? You can't just mash to win, because you'll get your attacks blocked and you'll get knocked down losing a bunch if health. You have to actually block and maneuver around your enemies and wait for an opening to get some damage in.
+WE CAN"T STOP HERE THIS IS BAT COUNTRY! It has nothing to do with Sony. Sega decided to only release it as a digital download, likely to keep costs down on packaging and marketing. You have to remember, this game was NOT ment to come out in the West. Because Sega's beancounters know that there will likely only be 30-50k of this game sold (because of it's obscurity and lack of relevance to Western audience), why put any more money toward making a physical copy? Correct me if im wrong, but with how friggin huge this game is, Sega is probably going to take a loss on this game with just the cost of their Localization Team alone.
This is my fave since Yakuza 3. Apart from The Witcher & MGSV this is my GOTY. Btw I can't help but notice he said it lacks the sophistication of Batman & Assassins Creed's combat.... You mean those games where all you do is press one button to counter everything?
I'm like 7 years late to this but seeing this review is what got me interested in the series. While there's plenty I don't agree on in this video. I'm still grateful for it making me aware of such an awesome series
Oh come on! We all know this game deserves a 9 for a PS3 game. Just look at those features, contents and graphics for an old gen game. Clearly made with love for fans. Goodness.
Such a brilliant franchise waitied so long for number 5 it was worth it. I've stop playing my PS4 and brought out my PS3 to commit time to this amazing game.
I've now completed the Dragon of Dojima saga, and I don't regret one minute of it. I'm a fan of idol music, so to play as Haruka was a series highlight for me!
+David's work Yakuza 1 is getting a remake for PS4. If Yakuza Zero does well in the West I expect Yakuza 1 remake will follow and so on. Yakuza in English hinges on sales.
+Paul Smith Yakuza 4 is great but this is about 10 times better. So much more content. Still worth playing through as many as you can. So far I have beat 2 3 4 and now playing this one. Havent beat 1. This game is the best one by far. So much to do.
+Stupid MAN2488 i've played 3,4 and dead souls. for me 4 is the best so far. the story of that one is just great. gonna get this one after im back from my holidy. too bad it isnt retail. i dont like to have digital games. wanna have retail to hold it in my hands.
+JibSquadfounder well at least 0 is gonna be retail. Sega is just spending as little as possible on 5...which is a shame because if they had advertised the series right to begin with this wouldn't be such a huge problem....
think Gamespot are the only ones to release a review I wish IGN and Gametrailers would too I know it's an old game but there must be fans in those offices who knows these games need as much help as they can get today.
The combat in the newest Assassin's Creed can't even compete with the combat of the original Yakuza. As for the Arkham games, that's just a one trick pony where you mash the same button with the occasional quick time event. Yakuza has mechanics like using environmental weapons like street signs and bikes, a balance of powers where the enemies get scared when you take down a number of their thugs (and you know, it actually impacts the gameplay by having them defenseless or being able to perform special attacks on them), use of dodging and parry based on your own skill (and not when the game prompts you to), a wide variety of heat moves that can be used against one or even a group of enemies, and fucking taunts that raise your own heat meter to dish out the pain. I'm not saying that Yakuza has the deepest combat system, but show some love to the series. Assassin's Creed boils down to button mash sword attack, occasionally perform a parry that's incredibly basic to do, use a gun to one hit kill, use smoke bomb to one hit kill everything, use sneak to one hit kill, and that's about it.
I'm so fucking happy that I'm nearly crying. I fell in love with the series when I played Yakuza a few years back and I've played through all of them since then. I was so worried Yakuza 5 wouldn't be localized, it's such a relief!
@@Pablo-ig7tx yeah it's random but I just played them in order of interest related to the game play after 5 I am going to move on to like a dragon, Great original series!
This game is so good! Best evolution of the beat em up genre ever. The side quests and things you can do are so varied and interesting, it is also really funny. Very happy this made it over to the US
Badass Simulator 2015. Easily the most underrated videogame series of all time... It's so full of content, great characters, humour, drama... It's got it all.
Sophistication? Yakuza has some of the most incredible combat I have ever seen and experienced. Only half way through 5 but In 4 each protagonist had wildly different styles. Akiyama was flashy, Kiryu was powerful, Saejima was a monster, and Tanimura was strategic. I haven't gotten to Akiyama or Shibata. Hope Shibata has a similar style of waiting for the attack and parrying. But ya an insanely robust combat system and it was made 4 years ago.
+Bloodylaser Worth the wait, one of my favourite games, and the best game in the series so far. Still I hope I don't have to wait as long to play Yakuza Zero which was just announced for the West.
+sausagesausage hopefully and Yakuza 6 to swiftly follow I am holding my breath praying these games do well. These two games could be Yakuzas final shot in the west and I really don't want Sega to give up on this series here
Why are you guys even criticizing the combat? It's a 2012 game! If I judged an N64 game by 2015 standards it'll obviously show its age. The combat in Yakuza 5 is amazing, fluid and enjoyable. I've had more fun with this games combat over Sleeping Dogs or GTAV's hand to hand combat. And imo it is right on par with the Batman Arkham games.
For those asking and new players who want to play the serie, why only PS3 ? Why only digital copy ? Why now ? Yakuza's serie work very well in Japan but the game work mediocre in the US and don't even think about Europe. Financially, they are not gonna spend money for a physical copy for us (US and EU) since only a few buy it. They tried with Yakuza 2, 3, Dead souls and 4 but the community outside of Japan it's not that big to make a good benefit from it. And it's one of the reason, why we have to wait so long for those game. They want to focus mainly where the game appeal... and it's Japan. Why on ps3 ? Well, if they release Y5 on PS4 which is a brand new game for us, peoples (not the fans) aren't gonna buy a 2012 game and if they does, they probably gonna judge a 2012 game, the same way they view a last generation game. So bad reception, bad selling, no more game from them atleast in the US and EU. Release only on ps3, it's still a edgy move but still we can appreciate the game for what it is, a ps3 game that come out really late. And as a big fan of the serie, I can tell that the games doesn't met the standard nowadays, he have his own aura, his own rules, we either accept it or hate it. And it's a reason, why the serie only work in Japan because in term of videogames, they are really open and doesn't mind playing "weird" games. But us (US and EU) we tend to appreciate more friendly games (gameplay and storytelling) that's why the reviewer compare Assassin's Creed and Batman (friendly games) with Yakuza but it's wrong imo. That's why some series have a good reputation but doesn't have the same result, financially. (Game from Team Ico, NieR, Persona and even Souls's series.)
i have been to some of the cities in the game. i didn't run into any random encounter. all i see are a couple of old masked security guards every 10 - 20 steps.
My review, as a Yakuza fan that is late to the party. The only RGG game that I still have yet to play is 6. Ive played the games after 6 as well. I'm juding Y0-5, Y7, Y8 Yakuza 5 does commonly get complaints about the pacing, but I do think that's unfair and unrealistic to the story that is being told. Unlike other yakuza games which felt like it was "bang bang bang" regarding story progress.....Yakuza 5 wants to instill some slice of life aspects. Given how that's exactly how Kiryu wants to live in the beginning then I think it's fine. You know by your own life that you will have lenghy period where there isn't drama, but then something happens, and now you have drama or major conflict. Criticizing the pacing in this game would be like saying your own life has pacing problems. I actually have finished part 1 and I absolutely love the story that is being told and how they are doing it. It seems MUCH better than Yakuza 4. In Yakuza 4, which it had a "bang bang bang" aspect, but only about 4 or 5 short chapters for each character playing in the same city. Wbtw, makes it feel hard to feel motivated to see what side-stories are available or what's new in the city. Combat style is still limited to one style in Yakuza 5, like 4, but it has been improved upon in by a much better ability grid in the options, heat moves, and flow. It also gives you villians that will really strike the chord for you to be motivated to want to beat them up, much more than Y4 or Y3. It's an 8.7 game to me. As far as the Yakuza only games(not judgment). It's only behind Y0 and Y1.
It's people like you who pollutes the minds of gamers to try something new. If you based everything to what, Assassin's Creed? You are terribly giving the Yakuza series an underwhelming definition. How can it have the battle system of Batman and Assassin's Creed? Why would you even compare it to that. You play Yakuza because its story is great and the voice acting can rival the likes of Metal Gear. There's something about it not having an English voice actors that makes it more genuine and raw. I'd rather have this Japanese made game which packs a ton of play value and things to do without making me reach for my wallet for game contents that should be included in the first place but would like to take advantage of consumers by removing it from the game as fucking DLC.
+Cloudlockheart I personally got first into Yakuza then not a month later into Metal Gear. Then I realized that these games are so similar in their story telling that it is no wonder that I'm a fanboy of both game series now. I was always into great storys with action and heart and they deliver both so well.
You'll need get to know how to play yakuza game. U'll need yakuza 3 and 4 but don't buy dead souls. If u have Wii u, U'll need yakuza 1 and 2 hd collection.
Looking at this again, I just realize. Did they rushed this review out the door to get it over with? I mean, the is literally zero footage on Akiyama and Shinada. Its like the just made the review as soon as they got to Haruka's story or finished Haruka's story.
+kaijuchevrolet Shin Megami Tensei - The Persona games... But nothing does it better than Yakuza. Sleeping Dogs is similar but is based in Hong Kong...
"Even if melee combat lacks the sophistication of Batman Arkham games or the Assassins creed franchise" WHAT!? ASSASSINS CREED!? SOPHISTICATED COMBAT!? Fucking hell I've heard it all...
bought this on psn on my ps3. I forgot they never sold an american physical of this game on the ps3. So odd. They did translate it for us and eu but for digital only even though its a huge game to begin with, you already know there are collectors out there waiting for this game to be released.
Finally? This game is a companion between gta, sleeping dog, and street fighter man, great game but low ass sale on u.s. That why there no english version for newer yakuza game, hopefully yakuza 6 which out next year can have english version, fucking love this franchise.
I agree with absolutely all of that Yakuza is an awesome series which I only just got into and I really like what I've played so far. However I will disagree with one point and that's Assassins Creeds "Sophisticated" combat and by that I mean clunky as hell setup.
Listening to someone call Kiryu, Kazama over and over leads me to believe this reviewer never followed the Yakuza series from the start as noone ever calls Kiryu, Kazama first.
I haven't even started playing it yet. But I know I am going to love it. And if its good enough... probably my favorite game of 2015. Even better than fallout 4 or just cause 3. *runs away to avoid the inevitable haters who will criticize my opinion*
"Secret move: Explosive Acceleration" - LOL WHAT? Stepping on the gas is a special move now? Alright. I'm kinda curious about this franchise. HyperBitHero made a long video about it, which I highly recommend. The only thing that's keeping me from starting to play the games is that A) it's confusing, there's so many titles and I have no idea in which order I should play them, there's remakes and even reboots or something, I'm not sure and B) at least half of them are Japanese only, and I believe some of them don't even have English subtitles! If someone could give me some direction, I'd highly appreciate it. Where to start? How many games are there? What order should I play them in? Are there English subtitles for every game in the series? Are there English dubs? Any tips in general?
Omgitsgodzilla It's been quite a while since I've watched it, and I remember him saying "there are no subtitles and no English dubs for most of the games", but there's been so many announcements and rumors that I thought the situation might have changed significantly. Guess not.
Yakuza 2, 3 and 4 have videos explaining what happened in all the previous games so it's fine if you start from any of those but if you can get your hands on the first game, then all the better. Since 0 takes place before the events of the first game it's also a good choice to start playing the series but you'll have to wait until it's released in the west next January on ps4. The main games are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 0 & 6. Yakuza 1 has english voices and subtitles but the rest have japanese voices and english subtitles which is better because it feels much more geniune with the original voices. Yakuza 6 comes out in Japan in a few months (no western release for now). Then we have the HD version of 1 & 2 for ps3 but it only came out in Japan and the remake of the first game called Kiwami which came out last year only in Japan. And finally the spin-offs: Kenzan! (samurai spin-off for Ps3 ), Ishin! (samurai spin-off for Ps3/Ps4), Kurohyou 1 & 2 (Psp) and Dead Souls (Zombie spin-off for ps3). All these spin-offs are Japan only except Dead Souls. Btw, there are no reboots.

Assassin's Creed boils down to button mash sword attack, occasionally perform a parry that's incredibly basic to do, use a gun to one hit kill, use smoke bomb to one hit kill everything, use sneak to one hit kill, and that's about it.
i really need to finish yakuza 4, this game looks dope!
He really loved the game but he was kinda scared of giving this game more than an 8
I'm so fucking happy that I'm nearly crying. I fell in love with the series when I played Yakuza a few years back and I've played through all of them since then. I was so worried Yakuza 5 wouldn't be localized, it's such a relief!
I played through 0 now I am playing 6 and next I am starting part 5 which I have wanted to play for years!
Hi, you went from 0 to 6 directly and now you are going to play 5 after 6 ? 😜
Very happy this made it over to the US
loving this game to death so far! been a fan since the start, really hope they localize the rest, and great review dude:)
Playstation 3 exclusive. Right up my alley.
Sega clearly has worked their asses off on this game still ridiculous we had to wait 3 years for a localizations
These two games could be Yakuzas final shot in the west and I really don't want Sega to give up on this series here
manic221 It all comes down to sales, I know SEGA isn't expecting huge sales from Y5, they just have to pull some sort of profit.
+sausagesausage yeah and Sony haven't even featured it on the Store :( Sony featured Miku I remember vividly but Yakuza 5? nope
manic221 Real shame.
+AzureDragon97 Also, the lack of Akiyama and Shinada in this video is pretty disturbing.
Assasin's Creed combat system is sophisticated? what the fucking fuck?
it's a good game
is it ever coming to xbox 360
Shendowx
ohh i'm sad :-( i only have a 360
Shendowx
thx i'll try to get a cheap one
Shendowx
hopefully they will release it on ps4
nolackinkiltdatnikkah
i already played sleeping dogs in 2013
wei shen's cop vs criminal self struggle story was awsome
hahaha
Played it on PS PLUS and LOVED IT. Can't wait for 0 on the PS4!
I'll eventually pick this up when I finally finish Yakuza 4. xD
This game looks fun as hell. There aren't enough games that explore Asian cities and it's a breath of fresh air to do so.
Have you, by any chance, watched this game install screen yet? ^^
I can't wait to get this!
I will get it tomorrow
I just finished Yakuza 0 for the PS4. Kinda feels weird playing this now. but gotta do it to catch up and get ready for 6. and maybe get Kiwami.
i have been to some of the cities in the game. i didn't run into any random encounter. all i see are a couple of old masked security guards every 10 - 20 steps.
3:27 armament haki?
Oh god... the Eurobeat form the driving sections in pure Initial D awe... i love it...
Lol just this afternoon I was singing along to Noizy Tribe. man I miss playing that game
+Tiago Barbosa It even has Initial D style artwork splash across the screen when you boost... SEGA make both games so it makes sense.
what i love bout this game is they really know how to balance out the gameplay
been loving this series ever since yakuza 4 was on PS Plus.
My review, as a Yakuza fan that is late to the party. The only RGG game that I still have yet to play is 6. Ive played the games after 6 as well. I'm juding Y0-5, Y7, Y8
Yakuza 5 does commonly get complaints about the pacing, but I do think that's unfair and unrealistic to the story that is being told.
THIS MIGHT BE GAME OF THE FUCKING YEAR RIGHT HERE. BUY THIS GAME NOW ITS AMAZING
Ps plus?
lol i just saw your comentário at psn site
Haha :D
Estou com um PROJETO que visa TRADUZIR TODA SÉRIE, que tiver curioso...
can mini games still be called mini games if they are retail games already?
+Cloudlockheart you make us Jfans proud bro! :')
agreed best game I ever played and that's coming from a person that played ac fifa gta etc
Guys I'm thinking of getting into the yakuza franchise. I have yakuza 4 but which one should I start with?
+King Amazon You'll get more out of each game if you play all of them. But the games is perfectly playable on it's own.
+King Amazon 3
+King Amazon really play 3. there is an open in yakuza 3 for you to relive the story from 1st 2 games
+Dilwale cricket okay thanks, looks like I'll be playing yakuza 3 this weekend
You'll need get to know how to play yakuza game. U'll need yakuza 3 and 4 but don't buy dead souls. If u have Wii u, U'll need yakuza 1 and 2 hd collection.
for my last part my now loading screen been going on for about 35 mins and its not frozen it just wont start why is that?
Looking at this again, I just realize. Did they rushed this review out the door to get it over with? I mean, the is literally zero footage on Akiyama and Shinada. Its like the just made the review as soon as they got to Haruka's story or finished Haruka's story.
Yakuza and Shenmue aside, what other games that allow you to experience the streets of modern Japan are out there?
+kaijuchevrolet Shin Megami Tensei - The Persona games... But nothing does it better than Yakuza. Sleeping Dogs is similar but is based in Hong Kong...
I'm thinking of getting this but I haven't played any other yakuza game
only took 5 years to port to PC
"Even if melee combat lacks the sophistication of Batman Arkham games or the Assassins creed franchise"
WHAT!? ASSASSINS CREED!? SOPHISTICATED COMBAT!? Fucking hell I've heard it all...
bought this on psn on my ps3. I forgot they never sold an american physical of this game on the ps3. So odd. They did translate it for us and eu but for digital only even though its a huge game to begin with, you already know there are collectors out there waiting for this game to be released.
I just started playing Yakuza 5 it's a solid fun game
Same i know right its fun
"Even if melee combat lacks the sophistication of Batman Arkham games, or the Assassin's Creed franchise"
help me I think I'm having a seizure
Finally? This game is a companion between gta, sleeping dog, and street fighter man, great game but low ass sale on u.s. That why there no english version for newer yakuza game, hopefully yakuza 6 which out next year can have english version, fucking love this franchise.
Yoooo they added racing and hunting.. This looks soooo good
virtua fighter in Y5 XD
+LiangHuBBB It's the full VF2 game too, with online match making support... Honestly Y5 is just incredible.
+sausagesausage I think I would spend more time playing VF2 in virtual arcade than exploring the town or following the story.
where can I buy the English version in the UK
Its got an 8 because it came out on the PS3
I agree with absolutely all of that Yakuza is an awesome series which I only just got into and I really like what I've played so far. However I will disagree with one point and that's Assassins Creeds "Sophisticated" combat and by that I mean clunky as hell setup.
Is there any cabaret sessions in this game?
i enjoy going through the mangas at the convenient stores in the game. it even has the attack of the titan one in it.
oh i get it now sophisticated means dumbing things down, the more shallow and simplistic the combat system the more sophisticated it becomes =D
Listening to someone call Kiryu, Kazama over and over leads me to believe this reviewer never followed the Yakuza series from the start as noone ever calls Kiryu, Kazama first.
When's the HD REMASTER for PS4
i luv Yakuza, but i would luved to have seen a physical release and why no PS4 release? it is out in Japan
Whoever thinks the combat in AssCreed or Batman games is sophisticated would probably get obliterated by games like DMC or Platinum games
Welp, I'm convinced. Guess I"ll take advantage of this PSN sale
I haven't even started playing it yet. But I know I am going to love it. And if its good enough... probably my favorite game of 2015. Even better than fallout 4 or just cause 3.
*runs away to avoid the inevitable haters who will criticize my opinion*
Who runs away
It's my goty of 2015. Funny how a game that came out in 2012 is better than most games this year.
i wish they would have yakuza On PC :(
will this also be on ps4? for PS plus
I hope we get Yakuza 5 on the ps4
+Karl Mueller Even though it is highly unlikely, there is still Yakuza (or Ryu ga gotoku) 0 that is being localization to the PS4.
+Omgitsgodzilla well I'm hoping that if Yakuza 0 does well for the ps4 hopefully Sony will bring out Yakuza 5 if not I can always important.
+Karl Mueller I don't think yakuza 5 is cameing out on ps4 becose this game was made in 2012 in japan
I holding out hope it still might come to the PS4 in 2017 in the US.
if it happens it not cameing in the usa becose it tuke abot 3 year to came out hear on ps3
wish it was on ps4 but oh well time to go back and hook up the ps3
Am confused, says Fukuoka and then says Tokyo... pls enlighten?
+iWillWakeYouUp Pretty sure Hyperbithero answered most of these questions you have below unless you didn't watch his long video.
Omgitsgodzilla
It's been quite a while since I've watched it, and I remember him saying "there are no subtitles and no English dubs for most of the games", but there's been so many announcements and rumors that I thought the situation might have changed significantly. Guess not.
Yakuza 2, 3 and 4 have videos explaining what happened in all the
previous games so it's fine if you start from any of those but if you
can get your hands on the first game, then all the better. Since 0 takes
place before the events of the first game it's also a good choice to
start playing the series but you'll have to wait until it's released in
the west next January on ps4.
Oh shit, that initial D song during the taxi driving scene
Look I got to drive a taxi and pick up passengers. And that was somehow more fun for me than Kiryu’s portion of the main story. So…yeah.
It's free for PS+ members this month! woot!
