Very useful video Graig ,but I can't find the extended video on your website. I am interested in more info about olympus. where do i have to look? Thanks.
I found this video, very useful. Thank you for your generosity to share with us your knowledge. I watched almost all your videos. Every video is a beautiful relaxing story, full of useful content and positive energy. Your work convinced me that Olympus is my way, but I have several Fuji lenses and I already sold my Olympus E-P5 and E-M10. I regret selling my Olympus equipment.
This is a good reminder for me to set up custom settings on my Canon. I shoot mainly landscapes, birds, and macros; the settings are very different for each. Hopefully it will save me a little time.
It took me a while to figure out how you got the record button to choose the image size but was well worth. I found this video really informative. I have now know what the Custom functions on the dial do. This has really made my decision to switch to Olympus more worthwhile. Thanks for sharing this. 👍
@mike chesworth Photography, can you share how you set the record button for image format? Been struggling myself! I checked in Button B1 setting but didnt find the Image format option to assign to any button. I am using EM1.3
@@karthikauij1180 Yeah. It baffled me for quite a while. I then found this which makes it look very simple. ruclips.net/video/AKrw8__gKRw/видео.html I wish I done it sooner. Hope it helps.
Hi Craig, you mention in your video that you bought a cable release, could you have used the Olympus iphone App to do the same thing? Once again great instructional video.
Nice! I like how you use DoF but I can't get it to work on my EM5 mkii. I focus on my foreground and turn on DoF Preview then I use my magnify button and the d-pad to select a background element. When I turn my aperture dial it adjust the amount of magnification instead of aperture. Actually, both dials change magnification. Is there a setting I can't find (or don't have) to change that? Thanks so much for the video no one asked for even though it's been very helpful!
I figured it out! For those EM5 mkii users here's how to do it. First you must be in Manual and focus on your foreground! Next, turn on DoF Preview and use the magnify button to zoom in on a background element. When in the magnified view hit your "Info" button to activate the +/- and you'll be able to use your dials to adjust aperture and shutter speed. The +/- option doesn't appear in Aperture Priority. There's a setting in Menu D called DoF Lock, with it on the DoF Preview button becomes a toggle so you don't have to press and hold to see the preview. Thanks again Craig!
I used to have the Lumix DMC GX8 with a similarly wide array of f buttons and custom dial settings. It was horribly un intuitive. Switched to the XT-3 and am very happy with the physical dials and levers for most of the most commonly changed settings. And there are a few well placed custom buttons for anything else. I do not miss trying to remember all of these custom settings!
Having just purchased an Olympus mirrorless camera I found this info very useful. Question what location did you use for this video as I only live a couple of miles from you I thought it looked a very interesting place to visit.
The depth-of-field preview suggestions seems very intriguing - I used to use that all the time on my DSLR - but never thought about it w/ my mirrorless (Fujfilm X-T/3) - I tend to use their helpful depth-of-field indicator (scale on the bottom) or its focus-peeking. I will for sure give your suggestion a try! Thanks so much, very informative!
On the XT-3 the DOF preview can be linked directly to the shutter release, so a half press of the shutter stops the lens down and you get a live preview of the scene as it will be shot, no separate button required.
Really interesting. I’m a Panasonic user (G9) and still haven’t figured out all the bells and whistles yet - if I ever do! There were a couple of penny-drop moments for me so I will be watching this video again to pick out relevant things. Remembering what’s allocated to a function button is almost impossible - maybe a little laminated wallet card!!
I don't have anywhere near as many programmable buttons but I should revisit the two I have set on the front of my D7000. Currently Fn is set to select between "non-cpu lenses" but except for rare experimental outings I'm down to a single 300mm ai lens and DoF is set to spot metering.
How do you set the record button to swap formats? 3':14". Search as I may ( and I have) I cannot find a setting available to achieve this. Please advise. 🤓
Nice video. I have been looking at getting the Lumix G9 and recently borrowed one which was great but I may have to have a look at the Olympus as well as I'm not sure the G9 has all those functions.
The only setting that I've changed on my cameras is to Back Button Focus. I've given up on custom settings because I don't remember what I've programmed in to them 🤔😂
Sorry Craig, but your description of the back button focusing didn't equate (unless I am hearing this all wrong) You said that you were in manual focus mode, but used BBF to lock on, then fine tune manually. BBF is used in auto-focus mode surely? I have the same camera and tried switching to manual in camera and on the lens and it doesn't work.
cynical1952 Yes, the camera is in manual focus mode, but the rear button still triggers the autofocus. Make sure you set the AEL/AFL in the menu to S3/C3/M3
Set my D500 to LOCKED AF-C in the menu. Don't know how I managed to mess things up during a shoot, but it moved from AF-C to AF-S. Lost loads of "runner images" due to my clumsiness. ARGH!
💅🏻 you will have to work harder at your varnish application your obviously a beginner I’ve looked into this for research purposes only you understand and have been reliably informed that you should only apply to the nail not as it appears here just generally rubbed onto the end of your finger 😂 another great video just going to go and give back button focusing a go now

I just bought an e-m1 MK II last week and your guide was very helpful. Really enjoying learning and using it.
Found the Depth of Field Preview and focussing on foreground and then changing f-stop for far focus, a useful tip. Thanks for the vlog

Great tips. I never thought of using the DOF button for Live DOF when changing f-stops.
Useful video. Has made me want to review and explore the custom buttons on my camera a bit more.
When speaking about camera settings, it’s nice to see someone making a clear delineation between camera configuration, and exposure calculations.
Some really handy tips. Several we use in common on the E-M1 mk2, but I still learned a few things so thanks a lot😊👍🏻
my last olympus was an OM10 film job, 1970,s superb camera, they always get it right, up there with fuji.
This is a good reminder for me to set up custom settings on my Canon. I shoot mainly landscapes, birds, and macros; the settings are very different for each. Hopefully it will save me a little time.
Thanks for the dept of view pushbutton tip and how you use it .

Some very useful ideas! Thank you! Nice jazz tunes - seems to fit my image of you. ;-)

Useful video, it always helps to refresh all the possibilities
Really useful Craig. A number of things I'm clearly going to have to try and experiment with.
Great video - thank you.
Thanks a lot, always nice to see how others do it - and it was entertaining as ever.

Good video, thanks for the tips. Also an Olympus user here so your video was especially easy to follow :-)

I have a G9, didn't notice anything specific. Button placement is different though.
I have the G9 as well, which I bought over this Olympus model. Customising to mirror the Olympus is possible.
I have same camera so cheers, Craig. I had to rewind at 11:25 :)
Interesting how you use dof preview thanks
The only setting that I've changed on my cameras is to Back Button Focus.
I've given up on custom settings because I don't remember what I've programmed in to them 🤔😂
Bonjour. Avez-vous la même vitesse de mise au point qu'avec le déclencheur ? Merci
Hello. Do you have the same focus speed with the shutter release? Thank you
Excellent job. This video further confirms my decision to move to the Olympus system.
Paul Stebelton Now we only have to convince the rest of the world Paul!
Paul Stebelton Now we only have to convince the rest of the world Paul!
On DLSR's (Nikon) when you press the DOF button in LiveView you get what you get with a ML. I use it to get my focus absolutely spot on.
Since I have set up my camera to back button focusing my images are sharp and I am feeling more confident with my photography
Very good!
Sunny WB in the UK?
Really interesting. How about telling us about how you set up for video? Thanks for posting.
what is the different gh5 and Olympus EM1 Mark II?
Thankyou, really useful.
sooo, are you going to get the E-M5m3 ?
No, but I have just bought another Oly camera!

I thought there was a lever switch on the back to get to ISO and WB so you can use the dials to change?
That did sound rather camera specific. Good all the same.
Stephen Boyd Most features are available to set in all other makes of camera too, just to different buttons of course.
Set my D500 to LOCKED AF-C in the menu. Don't know how I managed to mess things up during a shoot, but it moved from AF-C to AF-S. Lost loads of "runner images" due to my clumsiness. ARGH!
I think red nail varnish would be more suitable. Other than that, an excellent video.
I need to know how to use MySets
DoF preview drops to a fixed f/5.6 on my camera....?
Purple nail varnish 😂
Alex Reay Admittedly, not my usual colour!
💅🏻 you will have to work harder at your varnish application your obviously a beginner I’ve looked into this for research purposes only you understand and have been reliably informed that you should only apply to the nail not as it appears here just generally rubbed onto the end of your finger 😂 another great video just going to go and give back button focusing a go now
Thumbs up purely for the nail varnish
I missed everything you said after the L-Fn button!
Can’t really set the s.o.s. Emergency calls =(
Really love your vlogs, not much interested in your camera settings
David Gifford Well, thanks for telling me.
