Thanks for the info Peter. Your tip on setting the camera to get better exposure has helped me immensely, I've battled for years to get perfect exposure this method is working great.
That was indeed very helpful, Peter. I'd used the M1X setup as a guide when I got my Mark III. This confirmed a lot of what I'd done, and added a few changes. Thanks !
I have been looking for a setup guide for this camera for a week and haven't found one yet. It goes from how to take it out of the box to using settings that I don't know how to set!!!
Good video, I have a question, how to deactivate the light that help focus? I only want to deactivate it in order to make street photography without attracting the attention of the people. I will save it at my C1 mode
There is a dedicated button for it, AEL/AFL button in the back. If you want to tweak the default settings the AEL/AFL button has go to the Special Menu A1.
Trying to follow along because the manual provided with camera is very poor. I could follow up to the Dial settings and then lost ability to do what you are doing. I can't recreate your movements and settings for Dials. I'll play some more. As I watch the video if I see other problems I'll make additional comment(s)
@@ForsgardPeter I did that and made the settings. The result is A, P & S will not work to take photos. The dials for opening and speed don't seem to work either. The only Mode that will work (poorly) is C1
@@ForsgardPeter Reset to original settings and only making a few changes. Some of yours caused the shutter speed to stay open for 5-10 seconds or longer. Also the view finder and screen would not change upon making changes to opening or speed. My first impression is I'm sure glad I kept one of my Mark II bodies. I may learn to like this one as I use it more and learn.
I am new to Mirror less 4:3 format camera's and I just bought the Olympus emI-mkIII. Your video was 10X better than anything told me at the store. I have not been able to save any photos in Raw I try with both card slots in sue, or only one in use, both the top individually and the bottom individually. No matter what my settings I still only shoot in Jpeg. Advice, please>
Hi Peter, the Beast has just arrived! Thanks a lot for this brief settings overview - was very useful for initial setting, before I dived deep into the instructions manual to get a few more details.
Peter can you tell me about the advantages of EM1 iii over EM5 iii? I’m not sure which one better suits my needs. Mostly for photography but some video as well.
E-M1 MKIII has better features like hand held hires, LiveND, Starry Sky AF, USB Charging and can be used when plug in to a power bank and better battery life. These differences came to my mind. Of course if you do not need those features then it is a another thing.
Most of them. These is also a video about the Best Settings for E-M1 MKII. It can be found on this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLDi4hF9-cy6hvQ0EKYVepWKbqa8TCmId_
I just purchased this camera, moving from Canon's 5dM4 (weight). What do you mean when you say that in setting up the ISO (film speed), you can "press down the ISO button and turn the back or front wheel...can choose which face the camera is focusing on...". Why does film speed impact face selection? Thank you in advance.
Thank you Peter for providing this video. Very helpful since I recently purchased the MKiii in enabled me to set up quicker. I have a question that you can possibly answer which is regarding the ORI files, high res photos. It seems as though I am not able to process ion Photoshop. Do you have any suggestions as to how you to handle? Thank you. Richard
Thank you again for your reply regarding the ORI files. What I didn't realize was when the MKiii shoots a high res shot there are three files, ORI, ORF and JPEG so it makes it somewhat easier to process. One of the reasons for purchasing the MKiii was in photographing mallards on a lake near me. This time of year they fly in out quickly and fight with each other for the right to mate. I've tried various settings and recommendations from some other RUclipsrs who mainly photograph birds but at this stage it is more of a hit and miss but will keep trying. I shoot with the 40-150 and a 1.4 extender. Thank you for all of what you do.
Thanks Peter! Love your RUclips channel. Always interesting and learning:) I have just bought E-M1 Mark III :) before that I had the E-M5 Mark II. Great camera! I have a problem to choose raw in my new camera. I have read the manual, but it is not helping me. Do you know how to do it?
Go to the Super Control Panel and choose it from there and use P, A,S or M. You also might have some special feature on that prevents using raw. Check that you do not have Keystone Comp. on.
Thanks for timely and useful video. Three questions on the E-M1.iii: * I notice that the color of the EVF is somewhat blueish compared to the E-M1.ii. The E-M1.ii had the same "problem" in the beginning, but this was fixed by a firmware upgrade, I think. Is there a way to fix it on the E-M1.iii? * I have now drained one battery on the E-M1.iii. My experience is that it drains much faster than on the E-M1.ii. Could it be that the battery was not properly changed the first time? Could it be that they have increased the clock-speed of the processor? Could it be that some feature is turned on? (Bluetooth, or something?) * I'd like to learn to use the Custom modes. How can I assign to, e.g., C1 the following: (i) Shutter mode, (ii) ISO 800, (iii) L continuous shooting speed, (iv) CAF+tracking, (v) start-up shutter speed of 1/1000? [As an example -- for quickly preparing to shoot birds, etc.] Is this possible?
It is. You just set those from the menu and then go to Shooting menu1 and store them in a Custom Setting you want. You have four options and then those settings can be accessed with the Mode Dial.
Very helpfull to set my 1 Mk III - thanks! A little bit fast some times, but I can go back and start the part agaiin. In my case, I use art filters with pleasure - but if you say right: this is subjective personal use. Can you please something say 1 how to make best settigs for freehand high resolution stills. 2 how to make settingsfor ND recording for stills (is ist possible freehand or only with tripod? 3 can you say, what are your advices for custom settings C1-C4? Thank you. Bye Christoph
Yes almost everything is matter of taste. If you like to use ART-filters then have them on. There are some that are quite interesting, especially the B&W ones. The settings are the same. The exposure settings of course depends on the amount of light there is in the scene. For LiveND you go to the Shooting Menu2 and turn it on and then you will the options to choose from 1 stops to 5 stops of ND-filter. It is possible without a tripod. You just need have a steady hand. Here is a video about LiveND that I made. I used the E-M1X on that video, but the LiveND works the same way in E-M1 MKIII. ruclips.net/video/pc4dRnTPpIg/видео.html What to set to C1-C4 is also very subjective. I have these basic settings on C1. Then I have set the Highres mode to C2 etc. It depends what you like to photograph. I hope these answer your questions? If you have any more questions, please ask.
Dear Peter, it is very friendly that you answer so in detail. Many thanks therefore. It´s enough to know. For instance the video is great. So I know, how to do. In internet the most have said, it is impossible to use ND Filter without tripod. I`m very pleased with my new Olympus. I personally have tried almost all companies (without Pentax, Leica and Ricoh) - I began with Olympus and came back to it for a while; now I`m convinced to have the most sympathic cameras. One very important argument is: if you get older you need more lightweight/ small equipment to carry around and I need the very good stabilisation in Olympus cameras, too. So again: thanks for your patience in answering. I wish you all the best health in this times, Christoph
Regarding tethered shooting which you did a few weeks ago. Is it possible to rig the camera so that it can be used as a live webcam for communicating via Skype, Zoom etc? If that cannot be done could you suggest to Olympus that it would be a good idea?
Yes it can be as a webcam. The only thing that you need is a video capture device. I have an Elgato Camlink. I bet there are some other brands too. Blackmagic might have one. I have the fullHD version of the Elgato Camlink, but there is also a 4K version. You also need HDMI cord from camera to the capture device. It works really well with Skype and Zoom. The image quality is very good. Then you need to set the HDMI Output to record to get a clean image. If you have a fullHD video capture device you need the set the video quality to fullHD from camera.
thanks Peter. Allow me one lens question. I have the 12-100, a great piece of flas. However, for getting around easy and still have the Oly instead of the mobile, will I be disappointed by the image quality of a 12-42 Pancake? Regards
Of course, the 14-42mm is not the same lens as the 12-100mm Not a big difference in aperture, but 12-100mm is a better quality lens. 12-100mm f4 has stabilizer and is weather sealed. he advantage of the kit lens is as you say, it is very small. It has quite a good image quality but is it disappointing. I would say no. Do you have the pancake lens to test them side by side?
It does not really matter what the value is. The print resolution is set in post anyway. I will check this and confirm that I have understood that correctly.
Hi. To custom button: I tried to get iso assigned to a function button without the use of the lever. I did not find the option in the series of settings. Did I miss something? Thank you in advance.
Peter Forsgård I can be wrong, but, on my OMD E M1 II, firmware 3.1, the fn-1 button is the AF area select. Can be reassigned of course, but I did not see any iso option in the customisation.
Hi Peter, love your videos, thanks! Just one query: Why do you shoot in Adobe RGB? I assume you are developing and exporting your images in sRGB format (?), as you say you are mostly posting online/your images are viewed on screens/monitors? Does this not mean you would export from post processing in sRGB? Most advice I have read suggests it only is worth using aRGB if you are also developing/exporting in that format with the intended purpose of printing in high quality. I believe it's due to the fact that most screens/monitors are incapable of displaying aRGB, and there can supposedly be issues with certain browsers/applications even trying to display it - whilst on the other hand, sRGB is always supported as the standard format. If there is a benefit, I'd love to hear your take on it!
I use AdobeRGB. That gives me a better starting point for ETTR. Adobe RGB has more color info that sRGB. After image editing yes, it is converted to sRGB.
What kind of Sd cards are better for the EM 1 MK III. By the way I have restart with a Zenza Bronica RTSI and different backs, new expecience and digiital back.
I would get the fastest possible. Then it is no problem to shoot proCapture record 4K video. I have a video about new Kingston SD-cards. There is some more info. Here is a link to that video: ruclips.net/video/05S3aKmCNUg/видео.html
Thanks for the video Peter, your settings are completely different than mine but doesn't matter we are different photographers. I wanted to add that with the latest version of Ol.Share you can backup/restore your settings also with the phone and it's a great option if you're outside changing/renting cameras, etc. Also, I use the mobile app, I think it was in Ol.Track, to set the time on the camera, this way if you shoot with multiple cameras when you import them in Lightroom or any other software you can order it by time and it will be the correct sequence of the shooting. I'm curious what app you use to record your screen and when you have voice over the screen are you using also the lav mic or it's different configuration?
That is true about the OI.Share. Thanks for bringing it up. Settings are personal and that is the beauty of cameras that can be customized to every one!
Hi Peter, great choice of adjustments you did. I am following your channel quite a time and I must say that I really like it. There's so much to learn about our cameras... Thank you. Are you using back button focus? I could set it up easily to the AEL/AFL button as with my 1M2 but there's one problem: I can't switch off the focussing of the half-pressed shutter button... or at least I can't find where to switch it off... any idea? with out switching it off back button focus is useless... stay save and stay home hck
Thank you very much. I very seldom use it. You can turn the AF off when pressing shutter button is pressed half way from Custom menu A1 > AEL/AFL > Half Way AF > Inoperative
Hej Peter! Jag försöker få till Starry sky AF men får inte till det. Man ska ju trycka på AEL/AFL knappen för att starta fokusen. Men ingenting händer när jag trycker på knappen. Vet du vad det kan bero på?
Once more, thanks for all your videos. Question regarding Mark III. Is there an easy way to get to HDR without going to the menus? I am used to having the front toggle of the left wheel having the option. Now the HDR option on the left wheel was replaced with the flash options which I do not use as much. In fact, pressing the front toggle of the left wheel I do not see how to use the right front wheel anymore. How's that for a muddled question?
Yes you can. HDR can be set in many places. I would set it either to the exposure compesation button in top of the camera or the One touch WB button in front of the camera, right next to the lens on right.
@@ForsgardPeter Thank you very much... I suppose any of the function buttons will do... However, this gives you only one of the many possible HDR settings. Before, you were able to chose different settings via the right front wheel...
Great video Peter. Thanks! I'm a week in to my 1mk3 and spending a lot of time figuring it out. It's a big change from my 5mk2 :-) Do you know if the Myset is a global menu, or can I have a different Myset for each of my C1-C4 sets? I'm also curious what you think of the position of the Menu button. So far...I don't like it as I can no longer operate things with one hand. Would be nice if we could customize other buttons to perform the "Menu" function.
E-M1 MKIII does not have Mysets, it is called Custom sets. Yes you can set all the C1 to C4 for different use. If that what you meant? I like the position of the menu button.
Does anyone know is there any disadvantage in using the Anti-shock (front curtain) shutter option? And if selected does it only come into effect with shutter speeds of 1/320th or lower? Thanks in advance.
I have a video about the silent shutter and the anti-shock shutter. I hope this helps and answers your question: ruclips.net/video/HuYkmDuuizU/видео.html
I don't understand ...why cant I just not set MY menu in the camera , and it should be able to be set there and work ? Does it really need to be loaded into a PC for My Menu to work in the camera? ..I use ONE1 for editing , or Snapseed

That is very good if you have a possibility to test it yourself. IQ is always a matter of opinion. All modern lenses are good enough for most work.
I noticed in menu H1 that you skipped over the dpi settings. Do you suggest keeping the default 350 dpi or higher?
It does not really matter what the value is. The print resolution is set in post anyway. I will check this and confirm that I have understood that correctly.
Hi. To custom button: I tried to get iso assigned to a function button without the use of the lever. I did not find the option in the series of settings. Did I miss something? Thank you in advance.
It is by default the Fn1-button.
@@ForsgardPeter That makes sense, thanks! I look forward to trialing!
I could set it up easily to the AEL/AFL button as with my 1M2 but there's one problem: I can't switch off the focussing of the half-pressed shutter button... or at least I can't find where to switch it off... any idea? with out switching it off back button focus is useless...
stay save and stay home
hck
Thank you very much. I very seldom use it. You can turn the AF off when pressing shutter button is pressed half way from Custom menu A1 > AEL/AFL > Half Way AF > Inoperative
Olympus Finnland you should give Peter the Camera for free. Greetings from 🇨🇭
I have a few cameras from them already so I am good. But it is a good idea....
Hej Peter!
Press down the button you have set up for HDR and keep it down and turn the back wheel > you can choose from the different options that HDR have.
@@ForsgardPeter Oops...meant MyMenu.
Ok now I understand what you mean. MyMenu is the same for all Custom settings.
@@ForsgardPeter It does perfectly, how I missed that one I don't know, thanks so much.
Great!
Can My Meny work without me loading in to a computer?
Yes. It does need a computer to work.
@@ForsgardPeter Thank you for the answer , I thought so but got a bit in doubt! ..my next step is to set up My Meny
I don't understand ...why cant I just not set MY menu in the camera , and it should be able to be set there and work ? Does it really need to be loaded into a PC for My Menu to work in the camera? ..I use ONE1 for editing , or Snapseed
No it does not. I have misspelled that sentence. It should it does not need... Really Sorry about this.
Any special reason you skipped the video setting for this camera?
Does the EM-1:3 have the "your menu" option?
?
Yes. It has My Menu similar to EM1x
Yes the MyMenu is similar to the one E-M1X has.
Your white balance and post looks way off - very green hue
Lost me again at the again on My Menu and even more importantly, your caution to save all settings you don't show completely how!
