- I share my thoughts on the manual gearbox in my Mk7 Golf R. I recently had an issue with my clutch slipping (You can see these from the link here: • MK7 Golf R Fun Drive |... ) and I share my advice for other Golf R issues who encounter the same problem in a simple POV in England.

Good little Video Sam !
Keep it standard they are quick enough !
Thank you! Yes I do love a stock car myself 👍
Just bought a low mileage standard manual R and I'm over the moon with it. Will be doing some mods but an uprated clutch is factored in. If you want a proper drivers car buy the manual it's so engaging and fun but if your one for the 1/4 mile or beating your mates out maccies car parks buy the Dsg.
Many congrats on your manual R! 🤩
@@SamAustin cheers mate been watching your videos quite a few times and definitely helped in my decision to get a Manual
70hp over stock for the past 30,000+ miles (66k miles now) and stock clutch still feels perfect, fingers crossed 🤞
🤞
What tune are you using?
Given my own experience with my MK7 R and watching others with the clutch issues. I feel its the rear main seal, that causes some oil to leak at times while under heavy boost. That little bit of oil on the clutch will cause it to slip and burns the clutch over time.
Thank you for sharing your experience also with the MK7 R clutch 👍
im considering buying a manual base model to avoid reliability issues with the DSG, do you find the manual ok in traffic?
I can only recommend the car I've loved for the 5 years I have had it so far. In traffic its just like a normal manual although the clutch is a little heavier and sharper than your more ordinary car but easy to get used too 👍
I’ve got a 2016 car with car play and bigger discover pro nav screen is there any way to get the boost gauges you have their?
The performance gauge was introduced in the MIB:2 upgrade which came into play in late 2016 models. Having discover pro nav does not affect this unfortunately. I am sure there is a way to upgrade your system though, if you do want it, as I use it on most drives 👍
What clutch you got please
i never liked how soft and mushy the stock factory clutch/shifter feels in the R or the GTI. Since I used to own a WRX, trying to drive a Golf R manual was a huge difference. Seems like VW made these more for daily driving + a bit of fun driving, rather than solely track days like the Focus RS or Civic TypeR.
Yes 100% agree although I would say the clutch in the MK3 RS is softer than my MK7 R surprisingly but it is more springy in traffic. R is 100% the better daily but will lose out to the others for that extra bit of fun or on track
Glad to see that you are back enjoying your Car again, but if you were going to change it would you go for a manual or DSG,which do you really enjoy the best ?
If I was going to change from this car I would either go for a Porsche manual or an auto. Although I did really like the MK7.5 R manual I saw and filmed a video on a few ago aswell. In short I cant see myself moving on from this car anytime soon 🙂
@@SamAustin So not a Mk8 Golf R 😎 #savethemanual
nice vid love the pov style
Thank you 👍
Is it a guarantee that the clutch on the manuals will just grenade themselves? I’ve found a manual 2015 R for £17k at a VW dealer. Is it even worth it?
It is not a guarantee. I know owners with 90k plus miles still with the stock clutch. I would 100% recommend a MK7 R (manual or dsg). Just make sure it's not modified and has a full service history. Great cars 👍
Have you tried launching your manual? If so what would you say the proper way to do so in the manual?
Sell it and buy an auto
@@RandomGuy-ej9gr nah u ain't a real man if u don't drive manual
So it's not just me in 1st and second then haha, I'm speaking to r tech for a stage 2 but want a clutch that's viable for 600bbp so don't have to buy twice, do you think I'm better off speaking to any companies and their sudgestions
Worth testing the clutch out as the pedal feel is completely different to stock and for me was a bit tough for day to day which is why I kept mine at stock. An uprated clutch should be able to take the power and for sure is a must if you are going to Stage 1 / Stage 2 as the stock clutch is barely good enough for stock power unfortunately but it is still nice to use it is more of a case that you just cannot push it too hard 👍
@@SamAustin most of my driving is b roads and dual carriage ways with some town driving and motorways, definatley upgrading just want to find the right choice organic/paddle etc
Believe it or not the sound isn't piped in via the speakers, it comes from the windscreeen! touch it in race mode and you;ll feel the resonation.
It does sound great in race mode 😁
I have the same issue of a jolty 1st to 2nd in my Fiesta ST - no matter how quickly or slowly I shift!
I am glad it is just not me! A real shame as the others gears are fine 🤔
@@SamAustin have you taken out the clutch delay valve?
@@SamAustin not just you mate, it’s hard to make 1st to 2nd smooth, I find it best to take it to 2 grand in 1st then shift to 2nd let the clutch out kinda slow while hardly pressing accelerator
@@SamAustin I’m glad you said uprated clutch fixes that abit tho, I thought I was the only one with this , searched all over the internet and no one seemed to understand what I meant
@@vIMONST3RIv I get the same thing although I just assumed its because I'm not used to the car as I've only had it a week. Setting off at a steady pace it seems pretty easy to shift smooth, give it any kind of beef and I find it hard to shift to second without some kind of jolt. All the other upshifts seem fine regardless of how its driven.
Running stage 2 , 426bhp with an rts. So much fun
Does your rts clutch rattle/vibrate. Iv heard its normal but im not convinced it is normal. Kind of goes away when clutch is pressed
I have Stage 1 on my manual 7.5R, only around 30 bhp extra but enough to sharpen up the throttle response and remove any turbo lag 👍. . the stock clutch maybe on borrowed time, but no issues so far in nearly 4 years of driving 🤞 😎
That's really good to hear! 👍 Perhaps I got a bit unlucky with mine 🤔
Try APR Stage 1. It makes a huge difference in all power-related aspects
DSG & Manual aren’t bad in the GTI
Agreed. Both are really fantastic 😊
Dsg not so bad after all 😁 future

How much roughly is a new clutch ( fitted ) ? Thanks Sam
Hey, how much did that clutch cost you
£990
I really think you are missing out on so much fun by keeping your car stock, I see how passionate you are about this and really think you should modify it. Plus it would make for good content
My personal cars will likely stay stock but I do understand where you are coming from. I am driving a modified Golf R, with an unreal amount of modifications, next month so perhaps this may change my mind as from what the owner has told me it looks like no expense spared 👍
For the manual owners. Recently got a 2016 model.
Put in a clutch stop (only 10mm) but better,. Removed the delay valve ( flow restrictor) in the hydraulic line, again better, and put a short shifter in on the front to back selector..
So much better...
For the manual and DSG owners..
Muffler delete, inlet elbow, inlet hose, drop in perf air filter and the pikey 600.
Without doubt car is faster.
Many congrats on your 2016 manual Golf R MK7! Still loving mine too 🎉
Thanks Sam . You get a fair few manual detractors, but for me it was a must. Soon to be the last chance to get a manual ICE performance car. .
Think the phrase your looking for is clutch slipping
Yep! 😬
My advice is buy a dsg
I was waiting for someone to say that 😅
@@SamAustin someone had to 🤣
Play station Golf
Some of us want to maintain the 'raw' driving experience you get from a proper manual.
Problem is they used a dinner plate instead of a clutch plate
Despite being a die hard manual fan, the gearbox in the Golf R is absolute shite. The gear changes don't feel precise, launching it is a pain with a gear crunch going from first to second. There is a delay between each shift and no matter how fast you change gears there is no way you can achieve the claimed 0-60 time from manufacturer. On top of that, the final drive ratio is no good for motorway driving becuse you're almost at 3k rpm while doing 70mph. With stock exhaust might not be too bad but if you want to enjoy the engine sound, the drone will drive you insane. Only buy valved systems unless you use it like a boy racer blasting it in build up areas at 3 am....
I do agree with your points here. I love my manuals but this one is not the best. It is not bad but it has quite a few flaws. I think for a Golf R it is likely best in DSG form as an overall package 👍
Remove clutch delay restrictor in the bleed valve at transmission under airbox, then remove spring under clutch pedal. Sorts out slowness and lack of feel. Worth doing and both free.
As for sound, BCS downpipe and/or center section with standard backbox are good options for more oomph and burbles without drone.
