I would have added a couple 4x6 blocks under the front of the trailer before putting your arms and hands under it to chain it up ! Never know when it might just sink and crush your arm! Pretty cool video .. I drove tow trucks when I was younger . Lot of good days

Ron Pratt, not only are you a master at your profession, you need to create a school for those who wish to be a good as you are. Generally, heavy recovery operators learn through trial and error, but your experience could eliminate much of that!

One of those trucks cost more than a three bedroom house..
depending on how you want to spec it out ( various options )
the entire rig could cost as high as $750.000.00..
And before you shell out that much money on rig like that
you have got to KNOW what you're going to be doing with it..
one bad call can not only ruin you day but total out the rig
and possibly get someone killed in the process...
You can do anything, don't let anyone discourage you. Get a job doing this for someone else first, make sure it's what you want.
Check out the old military 5 ton wreckers, like the M936. They are inexpensive and are more than capable.
To say your equipment is nice is a serious understatement.

Kickinpony.66 That can happen with motorbikes in hot weather. The kick stand sinks into the softened asphalt. Same cure for the same cause to the same problem.

Ron, we drop loaded trailers on old disc plates ( round side down ) . I think you could drop them in a plowed field and they wouldn't sink. Don't mean to take any work away from you but might save somebody some heartburn and $$$. Thanks for the video and stay safe.

That trailer looked like it was a former moving van to me, because the colours and graphics are those used by Allied Pickfords movers here in Melbourne, Australia.
I believe that it was a retired Allied Moving van trailer.
Hello, I just finished my first week of CDL school, refreshing and interesting to find some tow/rescue action on youtube....these videos are somewhat therapeutic for me considering all the possible things going through my head that can go wrong with equipment and driver error. Knowing that folks like you will eventually be there to bail me out should things not always go according to plan out there on the open road has pretty much just made my day haha. Love your videos, laid up with a bad ankle and binge watching them. It's nice seeing calm professionalism. One small critique on this one, there may be something I'm not realizing, but it would seem a good idea to get a little cribbing under the trailer while you're reaching under, in case it sank more. I got out from under a vehicle falling down just in time, it touched the back of my shirt on the way down. It was a freak thing, even had jackstands under it. My warning was them sliding on the concrete. That made me a little more cautious about getting under things.

I saw a trailer do this last month, but only one leg went into a forgotten culvert. The wheels on the opposite corner were about 3 feet off the ground . :-)
I've had that situation too. To me, that is a more dangerous lift that one sank down flat.
I've seen a loaded milk tanker do the same thing when one leg found a hole from an old telephone pole. They pumped off what milk they could, then we took a large forklift and lifted it out and into the shop to replace the landing gear. Did I mention that this was middle of summer, and it sat there for a few weeks outside with what little milk that they couldn't pump off was left? Nasty........

Sir nice training Talon with the exception that should have put blocks under the front of Trailer for safety just in case with water coming up around the dolly that it might just all of a sudden it just drops. Just an FYI would hate to see either one of you to get hurt sir. We all would love to see more of your videos and sure they help some of the new drivers learn from it. I like your patience in training Talon I have trained more than I care to remember. Keep up the good work.
a good lesson and reminder to use bridging timbers under landing gears for storage trailers parked on soft ground. A lot of farmers around here even build support cribbing with timbers under the nose just in case.

We had two storage semi trailers placed on my son-in-lay's land and the driver brought old disc harrow blades to put under the landing gear. (South Georgia sand)

Yep. Been doing that for several years now. Believe it or not, they actually make a super heavy duty sling lift for this truck.....I don't have one, but they make it.

i was in Kentucky once, delivering 44,000 lbs of beer, missed my turn. my bad habit was to go through residential area to get around to the main road, but this time i ended up in a col-de-sac. it had rained for 3 days, and i didn't know how to get out, so i got my truck around the landscape in the middle of the col-de-sac, and pulled my trailer over the top, well the trailer tires sunk in the mud up to the bottom of the trailer. 2 big rig wreckers showed up, plus the police and 1 bobcat dozer to clean up the mud after. 1 wrecker had control of the trailer, in the back, and the driver of the 2nd wrecker, talked me through, getting the trailer around the col-de-sac. never again did i go through a residential area to get turned around.
We all make mistakes. Heaven knows I have and will again. That's part of the reason I try not to judge the people that I am called to help. Thanks and God bless.

You hooked up the glad hands, good job. I've seen guys loose a lot of time fiddling around with caging bolts..... especially when the parking spring inside the chamber is broken, causing the caging bolt to cock sideways.

It isn't easy handing over the reigns. I still love my job and especially working with this truck. This is just the natural progression of things. If I don't train him, I'll never get any time off...lol
Pretty smooth rigging, Ron. Your kingpin adapter plate saved a lot of time and hassles. I'm gonna try fabbing something like that for some of the odd-shaped loads that we lift.
If you want something like this there are several places to get them so that you wouldn't have to fabricate them. This is called a kingpin Keyhole adapter. Miller Industries has them as well as A.W.Direct and Zip's. But this may not be exactly what you are looking for.
You guys are brave sticking your heads under that thing with that soft ground under the jacks..
My two cents is you should have stuck a 4 X 4 lumber under the trailer while you were busy hooking the chains up in case the thing sank lower crushing your arms. It could have happened.
I was wondering how you would get key lock on king pin without putting yourselves in danger , but that was edited out , I love your videos and am full of respect and admiration for the job you do
great training video Ron i'm a fellow operator, my specialty is light duty however i have assisted on alot of heavy wrecks and i pray for all of us to go home safe every night i have a page called Stand with us its all about the Slow down or move over law in Arizona Phoenix area please take a look just trying to make it more aware to the passing traffic

That's one long wrecker.
Very.......395" wheel base and over 40' nose to tail. Takes a lot of space to turn it.
And backing with a "long" tractor and "short" trailer is not easy.

As the importance to use timbers to build a pad under the landing gear on trailers after a towing company had to bring in a rotator to make a sling near the nose of the trailer after it sank into soft ground. What if the tow truck couldn't get near the trailer after it also sank into the soft ground before having it towed to solid ground.

had this kind of thing happen to me in a walmart parking lot, i was able to ram my truck frame under it and get it on solid ground then hook back up to it.
