You can’t convince me there was ever a time that MicroSOFT and Xbox ever cared about gaming
@ByoKora775 your take is hilarious yet I'm aroused somehow
Microsoft has to combat Value getting a footing and respect, from the SteamDeck love, so very likely the next XBox will be a handheld integrated system.
sorry, i absolutely want a new X box platform..
in case you missed it.. GPUs for PC blow X box and PS 5 out of the water... and thats NOT the top of the line.. memory.. 8 TB of new Ultra Fast ME2 "Memory stick" HD's..
i want faster GPU.. so games 2 -3 yrs from now, arent "toned down" versions of PC games, more than they are now..
@@RodgerRamjetand yet they will be.
The original Super Mario Bros. used less memory than a Tik Tok post, and its still a great game to this day.
40KB has NEVER been more fun
Still playing it today too. 💯

..... That's a rather arresting thought.
@@khoward1033 i play it on NSO.
I feel like they haven’t even utilised the current hardware to its maximum potential yet.
They’ve barely touched the *minimum* potential, and most of their launch-window promises have yet to be realized… and the few that might still materialize before they try to force everyone to upgrade again (or worse, shoehorn in another Series S-style half-measure) aren’t lookin’ so hot, either. I don’t know what they’re smokin’ over there, but they need to stop.
Nah, I don't think this current generation can run games at 4k 60fps with ray tracing on properly. Imagine to have all of that with a visual quality of CGI cutscenes, that's what I call a generation leap. But to be honest even high end PCs can barely deliver that right now ...But yeah a new hardware means nothing when there is no games
Xbox: We're making a new console. We don't know who will make the games, since we've closed down everyone, but we're making a new console."
Starfield update only just released with 60fps mode. This tells me that starfield needed much more time and that game devs and publishers operate under duress and deadlines to birth games or else.
Games we've seen thus far don't maximize on ps5 and xbox series x hardware. More rime needed to exploit ps5 and xbox series x probably. That said its OK in my view if they compete with ps6
A lot of people are now going back and playing retro games which were fun, great enough and didn't need as much power as what they keep trying to put in current AAA games with today's hardware.
I agree retro and indie games is what I play most
That's the truth. I even fired up an old laptop with the NES and SNES emulator and playing all games and downloading more all over again reliving memories when I was 10 years old 35 years ago.
I'm enjoying that more now actually.
Meanwhile, people are still whining about how they want fairly recent titles to get further remakes and boosts because playing at 1080p and 30FPS is too primitive for their liking. See: certain Bloodborne fans. The game is beyond fine and given its design, will hardly age poorly.
That were confirmed for 2023 that backlog were a big thing, but nearly 80% played Live Service games...
Live Service ruined the gaming industry.
@@V3ntilator
Eventually I have to agree it did. Not at first. It was cool. But then folk spend most times for online play. I'm mostly the playthrough story type and online comes later. Now that's reversed. You right. It actually ruined it.

@@jimmymac2292yeah but xbox series is pathetic, one of the worst consoles of all time, Microsoft can do much more but they won’t because they don’t care anymore.
Microsoft and Sony are in their delirium and in their desire to release a new model. The US branch of Sony has been doing great for some time now.
We would say Sega and Nintendo in the 90s-early 2000s, before the arrival of Sony in the market
@@Archivosdelosvideojuegos How is the xbox series consoles pathetic? They both offer the most robust amount of features of any console. The series X is pretty great. I only wish Microsoft didn't force emulators off the retail mode
She has "hedge fund investor" written all over her. I'm tired of these corpos who have totally no idea what they are selling.
Yup she clearly doesn’t understand the hardware required for modern games. My Xbox X can’t handle some games I play on PC without sacrificing graphics and FPS.
I agree, we do not need more powerful hardware. A shift in focus in supporting game developers would enhance the the gaming industry for all involved tremendously.
What? How about both
The last gen was already powerful enough. The Xbox leadership is out to lunch.
M$ kneecapped themselves with the whole Series S requirement for Series X devs 🤷♂️
Really? By now the hardware in the Series s and X is already several generations old and replacing it with newer gen hardware makes a lot of sense:
1. it will significantly drop power consumption, as newer gen hardware has far lower power consumption specs
2. it will offer even more performance, to compete even better against the PS5 and keep in touch with the PC hardware
Both things are rather important, as both the Xbox and PS latest consoles aren't really renowned for their frugality where it comes to power consumption and more gamers are abandoning the gaming consoles in favour of more powerful gaming PC's.
Don't worry Call of Duty will hit Xbox Gamepass and Everyone will jump on it and Xbox will be Great. Sign Microsoft Xbox Division
Truth Microsoft Xbox is out to Lunch in fact they left the building going to the Moon. Really hate to see them Splat. Everything Rides or Dies with Call of Duty on Gamepass even the $30-$50 to Join what you think it's going to be $15 for Call of Duty.
🤣
@@TexasHollowEarth Sony did the same mistake. Their PS5 games had to work on the underpowered PS4 which is weaker than Series S.
WE DO and are going to need a more powerful nexgen console... what makes this wrong when it never was in the past??? This is crazy to me
The x is basically 4 years old and by the time this is released it’ll be about 6-7 years old which is a traditional lifespan for these consoles. Personally if it isn’t a leap like OG Xbox and 360, I’m not interested. The last two generations haven’t been that significant.
I think people are disappointed though as there are very few system seller games if any
True but it’s hard to be excited about a future console when the current gen one hasn’t really impressed that much. No games to be excited about. If I had a series x I’d be more excited about getting a current gen ps5 and playing all the games I missed out on than I would be about a future Xbox console that would have even less new games than the current Xbox.🤷♂️
This is starting to be a interesting era, could it lead to burnout/crash like in 1983 but without the junk games but costs?
It’s the “Black Thursday of 1929” style crash of the video game industry.
No, it won't. The crash in '83 was cause by a 90% reduction in sales. You will never see anything close to that nowadays. Just for one segment of the market, there are millions of people who buy the same sports game every year.
We are currently seeing massive restructuring to reaction to the failed push into live-service. I'm sure some publishers (even the big ones) can go under. Billions might be lost. But video games are much more deep-rooted into modern society than it was in '83 (when video games were just viewed as a fad since they had only been around for a few years at that point)
yea but it'd only take 90% of AAA sales. And AAA publishers are dumping waaaay more resources nowadays compared to 1983. There's a lot more on the line for them and a few bad financial decisions can put anyone out of business when we're talking about billion dollar games.
Plus, more and more people are moving to retro and indie gaming, so it's not like people don't have other options.
An industry crash is 100% still possible.
As a person that was in his early teens in 1983 and lived through that time, that's exactly where the industry is headed again. AAA gaming companies didn't learn anything from that crash because 99% of them were not around back then. Nintendo is the only large gaming company poised to actually make it through this next gaming crash that's coming.
@@730indoorsman While this is definitely possible, it would pave the way for Indie and smaller studios to devour massive market share. Steam alone provides enough backbone to every developer that the market share would almost certainly be captured anyway. Should the legacy industry fail entirely, the open source and small operations will be crowned in a matter of weeks.
They'll probably call it the Xe/xer-Box
They should call it the ExitBox.

It is interesting to see the turn-around on opinion on Xbox. A few years ago, its fanboys were banging on about Xbox not being woke. Earlier, when i was talking about it
At least ubi have release games this gen I guess some studio / publishers have still yet to bring their games out
The speech was for the share holders
Neo geo jumped the gun and you saw how they turned out; abundance in graphics in a 16bit format....so far ahead only drug dealers(true story) and some rich kids had one, we kids were blown away by snes and genesis and figuratively bought the arcade home, Neo Geo literally bought the arcade home. I can go on forever but you get the point.
It seems that this "next gen" XBox is geared for the next generation of remakes. For games that already had HD assets, it's mostly a retread with a new render engine, shaders, and lighting. And if Microsoft creates an automated remake system like RTX Remix to do the heavy lifting, studios could churn out "remasters" by the boat load with minimum effort and costs...at AAA prices.
While the bean counters and execs would bust a nut over such a prospect, I think the response from most gamers would be fairly flaccid.
This gen hasn't even begun to reach its full potential yet.
If you mean game releases and different games then yes but if you mean graphics they are actually already having a hard time.
Also, the reason that gaming is in a dire strait is because of triple A's own making.
We've seen it demonstrated time and again that smaller focus, smaller budget games (like Senua's Sacrifice) make it and do it bloody well.
That demonstrates their problem but they won't learn because that not only goes against the corporate structure but they don't understand their product anyway.
I don't think Nintendo is struggling that hard.
@@nicholusshadursky9512 No because that's not what I mean. Nintendo do their own thing and always have. You can't include them in this equation.
What's the point of upgrading the hardware if it is already too expensive to make best use of the current hardware?
Its actually cheaper id you have more room to spare.
Do they intend to put any games on this one?
There is NO reason to introduce "more powerful" hardware until developers say they are constrained by the current hardware.
I totally agree with you, Lady Decade, that MS is really growing out of touch with their audience and that DEI hire they call the president of XBox development is becoming the poster child for this. Games from the current Gen consoles are already, for the most part, overpriced and under delivering, which is only causing their console fans to become more and more disillusioned with them. We all are in the grips of a global recession and just don't have the expendable income to waste on the next prettier/flasher experience, especially when we know from the last 5 years or so that it's probably not going to be worth the price. Unfortuantely the greedy and now woked MS is too busy trying to keep their ESG rating up to notice that their titantic corporation is taking on more water than their pumps can handle and is slipping deeper and deeper into the icy depths of reality.
Any games for current gen XBox yet?

I'm all about a new Xbox. Especially since they're talking about different form factors. They're powerful enough now to have a handheld Xbox that can play our full library. That's what we need. We won't know the full details until it happens but they have different ideas now and we should give them a chance.
I'm still playing on my xbox one and it's pretty satisfactory...
I love Nintendo but the switch is an anomaly which thrives predominantly on 1st party games. It’s a portable machine that can be docked at home so people give it a pass but If it was a standalone home console it is woefully underpowered and would not have sold as many units
The Switch was powerful enough and designed with Nintendo’s own games in mind, it’s a portable Xbox 360 and PS3 which can be played on the tv, it wouldn’t have had the same level of success if it was a home.console agreed but it would have still easily have beaten the woeful Wii U in sales. But the you can’t deny that the Switch is a game changer and is what Nintendo have always wanted their console to be, it was the culmination of what the late great Iwata’s vision.
@@Adamtendo_player_1 yeah, it was designed with Nintendo games in mine but it’s still not powerful enough sometimes the game slowed down and I feel like I’m playing StarFox on my N64 but I still love it tho 😂
they are "forcing" the platform ,teasing and tempting hardware improvement as a strategy to gain support and attempt to overcome platform saturation
The current console isn't selling as well as theyd like, so they're basically ditching it and rushing to get something else out in the hopes that it'll do better. Im sure everyone who purchased a SeriesX/S will really appreciate this strategy.
You're correct on the information. Like I said in the past completely not interested in the XBOX because I don't like the controller. Its more cost effective, fun, and portable to just play games on my phone. The games may be limited. But I want something simple and entertaining not a cinematic theater type of game play. That's why I only played The Final Fantasy XIII series on my PS3 I was so excited and interested in Final Fantasy XIII on its debut I bought the only thing I could afford which was the players guide. I liked drawing the art work. Year's later, 2017 when I bought a PS3 for $20.00 I finally got to play the game. I liked it so I bought the next game in the series and then the one after the completing all three while my leg was in a cast and I was in a wheelchair healing. The games were fun but didn't have much replay value and I felt like it was and advanced version of the Sega CD where you're basically pressing buttons to view a film. A really long one. I like the classic side scrolling games like Super Metroid or Mega Man. Especially the Mega Man Battle Network series. I remember playing Mario 64 on the Christmas the year it came out thinking I don't know if I really like the time consuming areas to concor with changing camera angles. Even Zelda 64 was time consuming because you had to traverse too much landscape where as classic gaming just had levels. Like Super Metroid was fun because you could literally complete the vast areas and complete the game in about three hours. I didn't like Metroid Prime as much because of the complicated jumps. Metroid Prime 2 was worse I played it for six months and couldn't complete it because it was too encrypted and I never found the final Boss and for several weeks I was running thru every arena trying to find the final area and eventually gave up. I played it for a few hours each night after working two jobs. Twilight Princess came out and I played it for a few days and didn't really have the time to dive into another realm. I liked Kingdom Hearts. But the second one was ridiculous and I didn't complete it. Sora flying around with dual Keyblades was just not interesting in fact I had more fun playing Chain of memories and on my DS even though it was a Gameboy Advance game. And I even completed the second playthrough because the game had action and wasn't too complicated to play. I even bought the actual card game and played it with my little brother because it was simple and fun. The new games I feel like I need binoculars to handle all of the graphics. It's a bit ridiculous. I shouldn't have to risk flipping the circuit breaker to run an unaffordable gaming system. Anyway thanks for the screenshot clips of games I'll never play because of you at least I can understand where gaming went from the PS3 which is usually playing an Ah! My Goddess DVD because even cable TV is to expensive and not really something I want. I'm just happy hearing one of the DVDs in the background while I play games on my phone or watching something interesting on RUclips. Thank you for describing gaming from a decent perspective and keeping people informed on the gaming industry. Have nice day _
I always appreciated your retrospective videos so I was hesitant to see you do something else but your takes on video game culture are solid.
The current 9th generation of gaming feels just like the last 8th generation of gaming consoles.
I really do believe that Sony and Microsoft have reached their peak and only Nintendo and PC games will lead the current and next generation with fun games and new ideas
And also, if AAA studios want to stay in business then they better take the square enix approach and stop making console exclusives.
I heard that they are planning to release a new system during holiday 2024 it would be interesting to see what that would be.
I think a more powerful console is great time to move forward
Agreed
A more powerful console means more expensive and unsustainable development costs. Nintendo’s got the right idea by making their consoles less powerful and keeping development costs down.
Instead of hardware makers imposing on game developers, maybe game developers, somehow get together and create common hardware.
You make such a great point about using your PS 5 to mostly play PS 4 games. I do the same as well on my PS 5. Just a few months back I actually got a Xbox Series X too...main reason was to play my 360 library cause I want to give my 360 a rest now cause the disc drive struggles to open nowadays. So yeah got a Series X to mainly play 360 games. The only Series X game I got so far is Forza Horizen 5 as a pack in 😅
I feel sad. I have been a happy Xbox supporter since the OG and 360…until now. My series X will be the last console I own (aside from my several retro consoles).
I’m losing faith and going straight to PC only. I can’t put down RE4 randos and RE4R! (And can’t wait for the full rando for REmake to come out soon, it’s in beta now!)
Hello mate! in my perspective, you are so right! My last console was the first XBOX. After that, PC since 2003 till nowadays. Best decision I ever made. Stay well!
Its actually more expensive to build a PC and upgrade it.
@@007GoldenLion That is true my friend! But to ally gaming to all other things you can do on a PC, is priceless to me. I can play any game from any era, from any console ever made on a PC. Best wishes!

@@darkmoonhowl I own all consoles and have a high end PC since I'm a colector and am basically rich but PC is more expensive much more expensive so consoles are the best option for the middle class IMO. Either of the 4, Ps5, Xboz, PC and switch are a great choice since all 4 great games.
I get the impression that X-Box is on the route similar to one that led Commodore to bankruptcy.

PC Master race. we don't do generations we just win. with freedom and quality.
This actually could make sense. If they find a way to mix Unreal engine 5, or 6 with A.I. generation. They could have a gaming console that literally makes real life Matrix or holodeck from Star Trek TNG level of graphics. And with a.i. you really only need to program it once then all you have to do is ask it to make a game of any description you can think of. It could be possible in a few years.
I think they put way to much effort into games looking pretty. If they worked more on game play and story instead, and with the memory saved on art they could make the game world larger, they could save development cost.
Your not the only one LD, the PS5 is the true PS4 Pro. Spider-Man and GoW with higher frame rates look so good
My two cents on the matter is something I have been preaching for years. I've been of the mindset, similarly to what you mentioned here, that technological leaps have not been as great with recent generations as they were with the older generations. This is known as a singularity (pretty sure this is the term I am looking for) where the bounds of technological progress are pushed so fast and so frequent you eventually reach a point where improvements are no longer leaps and bounds, but tiny incremental steps. With technology and development costs being so much and development cycles taking so long I feel like we are at a point where a standard 5-7 year cycle for a console just doesn't cut it anymore and that we should be trying to stretch them out longer to allow newer technology more time to develop generating those bigger leaps again. I really do feel like we released the next generation a couple years too early and I feel like this is why the PS4 and Switch still sell so well as their prices are almost half or more off while also giving experiences pretty close in quality to the PS5 and Series X just lacking the few improvements those systems really have.
Edit: I should also add that holding onto a generation longer would also allow the added benefit of giving both consumers and developers a little breathing room as the they'd no longer be looking to reinvest in new tech every few years and give developers time to further learn to stretch their technology and possibly lower dev cycles due to better competency related to mastering the capabilities of that tech. Good luck with this, as the tech industry is essentially an arms race of who does what first and the only way that would happen is if the big three sat down and agreed upon this, but this already technically what Nintendo did with the Switch anyway repurposing aging smart phone tech in a portable console.
They want a head start in the next generation simular to when they went from the original Xbox to Xbox 360 to get a year start on Sony
True but all that will happen is sony will go okay then lets wait a bit tweak its plans slightly
@@Tim_3100 Nintendo will also be a head start on Sony but unlike Xbox, Nintendo will have great games out of the gate with Switch 2 and it will be difficult for Sony as Nintendo’s a real threat to both Sony and Microsoft.
Yes they are working on the new one, but they are locking so much down that if they go forward with it, it will tank in sales.
PS. I know what brand mic Adam Patrick Murray at PCWorld uses, but i would like to know what brand microphone YOU are using, because it carries great audio.
I would like a handheld Xbox, you could have games on it but also have mobile games like candy crush as a separate category
I want to add to my previous comments. I’m 74 and have played video games since Pong! My first System was the Fairchild VES which was the first game cartridge game system. Next was the Atari 2600 followed by the Atari 800 computer, the Nintendo SNES, N64, Xbox, 360, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Series S and X (I have both). I did briefly own a Playstation 2, but returned it. I also have a GameCube and a Wii. As for handhelds I own the Atari Lynx. So, I have been involved with this past time for a long time and have witnessed the improvements along the way. We don’t need anymore ‘improvements’ ! The graphics are so good that there really isn’t a need for better resolution. I think it’s fair to say that the game industry has reached the point where they are basically out if ideas. There’s just nothing new or innovative coming forth. Halo is my favorite franchise and Halo Infinite is basically the same as Combat Evolved with better graphics! Reach is my favorite with ODST a close second. However, they are all the same basic idea. Same goes for every franchise be it sports, driving, flying, fighting, etc. We all wanted better realistic graphics and they really are very realistic with some being maybe a bit too realistic. So, I really do agree with you when you point out that we don’t need a more powerful console. They haven’t even squeezed everything out of the current crop! That’s what amazed me was all that programmers were able to do with the humble 6502 8 bit processor! Anyway, you are correct! Good video!
Microsoft announcing they're working on the next generation when we're at the very most half way through this generation, and when so many people's most common complaint is that Xbox has no worthwhile exclusives feels pretty reminiscent of a certian "The Saturn is Not Our Future" comment...
Great video thank you I’ve subscribed 👍
Wonderfully said... loved the video. I do the same with my PS5 right now, mostly for the PS4 RPGs I missed and dipping into next gen stuff when it's out there. Happy with the current generation of hardware.
Nintendo is doing well though. I play plenty of Nintendo games, plus rthey have a vast library of retro games included with their online membership gameplay.
They should do a lower power gaming console for classic games and originals. Pay for licenses and split profits on classic games. Cheap to develop means they can actually profit on the console.
I could only imagine that they release new hardware because of either their push for ARM or an integrated NPU.
I mean at this point I don't quite know the use-cases of an NPU, but its all the rage in the tech-sphere right now.
Whatever it exactly can do I'm sure there are a couple use-cases for gaming.

When I played Super Mario Bros from the first time I was so impressed because the screen scrolled horizontally. Then came Super Mario World and it was a great leap compared to the first super mario brothers, then again Super Mario 64 expanded to 3D environment, analog thumbstick (controller so confusing at the time for me), it was a great leap in graphics indeed. Nowadays it seems we came to a plateau, and new IP's are scarse. We pay more and get less, that's how I feel.
fun fact it doesnt cost much to create a game anymore, especially since they already have a pool of landscapes, characters, and story boards, ect. they dont even try anymore. i miss the gimmick era, when they used to add and BRAG they they had different features compared their competitors
"Current" gen consoles are quickly getting to the point of being mini-PCs with limited options to upgrade the hardware. I give it another generation or two, and we'll be offered actually mini towers with physical prevention from upgrading anything but the hard drive inside and a fancy logo slapped on the side.
If MS does ANY new hardware, try to Shrink the Series-S APU to work in a Handheld the size of a ROG ALLY, sell it for $349.99, and toss in 3-Months of GamePass. Make it Dockable, like the Switch, and offer an "upgraded" dock for $249.99 that houses a GPU similar to the Series-X, so when you dock it in that DOCK you get Series-X performance (Series-S and Series-X already have the Same CPU, so this is feasible).
you know, apparently there will be an xbox (branded?) meta quest coming out soon...
Well I want one now since I dont have a Series X
Her audience was Bloomberg - business people and investors and not the gamer... She would have been talking about the 2 year future. Also, just like when you build a skyscraper the demand for finished buildings is rarely inline with the building of one. So, if in 2 years you expect a revival of demand, you need to be designing the machine now. The head of GS is a competent party DJ, but you don't expect him to come over on an interview about the industry as a DJ (actually, you can argue he had been seen that way and it didn't help his image last year hence his current image to camera)
I agree. We are barely getting games that takes full advantage of the hardware. Now they expect us to buy another hardware?
I think this direction is working out. As long as there's still some obscure retro videos sometimes I think it'll work out well. Also, I completely agree. I haven't had an xBox since the 360, and even though I got a good amount of use out if my ps4, the ps5 seems too pricey to be worth it since there aren't that many games I "Just have to play". So not at all ready for a ps6...
I agree... It's actually Time to take a *STEP BACK* and reconsider what the Gaming Industry should be
I am not against them closing studios from a financial standpoint. I mean if ya got 10 game studios working on games there is a chance to flood the market. Instead ya got the IPS the studios own why not close a few and move those IPs to one of the remaining ones, stagger releases so each remaining studio isn’t under a crunch.
Sarah Bond isn't a gamer she's a diversity hire 😂😂
Huh?
Do you Think Jim Ryan was playing games? These people are brought in to manage all departments. Not play games lol
@@jimmymac2292 Jim Ryan is just a suit pretending to care about games. Sarah Bond was placed in a position of power to make the XBOX brand appear "progressive." That woman has not touched a videogame outside of a phone in her life.
@@jimmymac2292 It was a joke but I do believe the people in charge should know their stuff when it comes to basic gaming common knowledge at least. Personally I don't think she's qualified.
@@WildDogGamerBoy no shot lol, the lack of consistency is telling bro
I'm still stuck on what went wrong after the Xbox 360, The original Xbox did pretty good and the 360 was awesome after that it went downhill
My series X has spent more time playing 360 games than modern games. I thought closing studios was the last thing they needed to do, then they announced new hardware having done nothing of note with the current and closed studios they could have used to make games for the new hardware. Utter baffling. behaviour.
A problem with making a more powerful gaming system than what we currently have would be free space.
Games on ps5 for instance can take up 300 GB which is 30 % of the free space the ps5 comes with.
In other words if they are going to keep making more powerful next gen consels they need to up the storage on the newer consoles.
This will also drive up the price but it is going to be needed.
Xbox should become a Microsoft gaming PC brand, like their Surface laptops. Have two SKUs, one high-end, and one mid-range at a lower price. They could ship them with a gaming optimized Windows 11 or 12 with an optional desktop mode for running regular PC applications.
Phil Spencer needs to be in full control.
If it really is a next gen console that would come out in 3 - 5 years, then it absolutely makes sense to be working on it. And to mention it now as marketing, to counter the rumors that Xbox is exiting the business and going full third party.
It genuinely feels like Microsoft doesn't know what to do with this brand anymore.
Making Rare work on Kinect games, letting Killer Instinct collect dust, running Halo into the ground, locking out 3rd party accesories, letting every good exclusive go to PS4, etc.
I remember when i got my original xbox with halo that was something special to me that really showcased what that hardware could do. Today i have every xbox console and i do enjoy gamepass but to me it really feels like their is no soul to it.
The unsettling thing about things not, as you say, settling right.. it probably indicates that the speaker is no longer the intended audience. Often, when things do not make sense, it is because one assumes that their priorities are shared by the subject.
Put another way, I suspect xbox has a business/marketing plan where their current customers are no longer the ones they are interested in, and they see a new (younger) market to serve.
Retro and mobile gaming is where Microsoft should focus heavily on at this time. It's a good idea to get a head start on r&d in terms of the next generation of gaming. As a 42 year old gamer, I don't have the amount of time and money for triple A titles anymore. I wish I did. But I don't need a new Xbox. I'm getting another Xbox 360 to tinker with, and a PS5 after the newer slim comes out.
I think "more powerful hardware" is a hint that they are releasing a custom windows gaming PC as their next Xbox "console," that can probably allow us to install Steam, Epic Games, GOG, etc... along with the default Xbox PC app of course.
It's obviously not going to be cheap, but that's why they are possibly also releasing a comparably cheaper handheld Xbox similar to a Steam deck or Switch.
I found these bits of news to be hardly surprising. First, the believed schedule for the next Xbox will be only one year less than the gap between the PS4/Xbox One and the PS5/Series X. The Series X got its first public unveiling in November 2018 at "The Game Awards", and was launched in November of 2020. Microsoft could have a similar schedule in mind here.
Second, part of the reason why the Xbox 360 was so successful, was the 2 year head start over the PS3. Yes, Sony had more to do with Microsoft's success that generation than Microsoft, but it likely was a factor. Microsoft is already the console leader in providing backwards compatibility with their games, and that philosophy was publicly renewed by Microsoft weeks ago.
Third, consider the difference that six years makes in the PC space. The current gen systems have yet to deliver on the 4k, 60 fps with ray-tracing game play which many of us were led to expect. The next big Microsoft console may launch close to what the Series X launched at, whereas Sony will likely delay the PS6 strictly because of their rumoured upcoming half-step system. 2020's full feature set finally delivered, at 2020's price. With a slight bump in performance, and less time trying to coax out that last bit of power.
Fourth, the current generation started with the belief that the most important thing for a console were big budget, offline, story driven, exclusive games. But two of the biggest games so far in 2024 are Palworld and Helldivers 2. Now, Sony has increased their efforts at consolidating the PC and PS markets, and are expected to make same day releases more common. I wouldn't be surprised if some of their older games also get ported to Nintendo systems. Microsoft has seen a slight increase in their lineup of ports. Nintendo has been doing Nintendo so far instead, but they may have to adapt once their own games become more expensive to make. More A and AA games instead of fewer AAA titles, less exclusivity, and the same annual budget could turn things around drastically. Unreal 5 is also likely to cut initially development time (and expense) by itself.
Fifth, you have to remember the spike in video game sales thanks to the COVID pandemic, and the large increase in the hiring of game developers. When the game sales went back down, there were suddenly additional redundant game developers.
In short, I don't think that the reality will be as bad as all that. And my opinion on Microsoft's rumoured handheld, is it may be a deal with other handheld Windows based gaming manufacturers. Phil Spencer has echoed the public sentiment that the smaller screens means increased necessity of a console-like interface. If Microsoft enters the field with their own piece of hardware, they'd possibly have contracts with other handheld manufacturers as a sort of concept test bed. But I think it'll be more of a "Windows for handhelds" release than an actual bit of kit. Perhaps something ARM based though if it does involve new Microsoft hardware.
Dearest Madame Decade, I am with you 💯 on all points. Think about this: a brand-new NES game used to cost $30. Currently, most triple-A studio games cost $60. Over thirty-five years and game prices have only doubled. But a new console that will cost $500?! NO!
I agree 100%. All this talk about a new Xbox and a PS5 pro is ridiculous in my opinion. Only a few current gen games have actually been impressive so I don’t understand how new hardware is going to fix anything.
1:02 I truly believe that them closing down the studios was an intimate strike against steam in the PC world so they will have no resources to get games outside of Sony and Microsoft
What? The studios they closed are studios they owned. Microsoft is the publisher for all their games.
If they don't want to publish on Steam they can simply do so, they don't need to close studios down.
You've very eloquently stated how I've felt about this entire generation. The current systems feel like a mid generation refresh that simply provides a better experience with "current gen" (Xbone and PS4). M$ ans Sony are tanking the industry. I sincerely hope that Nintendo doesn't follow their ways. Sincerely a former Playstation and Xbox lover.
I can’t agree with this take. The current hardware has been maxed in several games. Starfield struggling with 4k 60, dragons dogma 2 struggling, etc. While studios could optimize more wouldn’t that in turn be harder and more costly vs releasing more powerful hardware that is easier to port to from PC?
Also the trend of releasing a new console every 4-5 was common place until the ps4 era which really started to struggle to keep the pace with games year 4, and then we had the pro release which was basically just another console release under the guise of a “refresh”
By the time developers start to really get the hang of the hardware, they want to release new hardware so they have to start all over again
Technological leap how? Larger data bus for higher resolution audio and video? Not even sure what a measure of better quality for video is these days.
Consoles always disappoint me with the power they have. The equal power on pc would be 720p, low settings and 30fps for many games. On pc I run 2k 120fps with ultra settings. It’s a different world. Hard to go back to consoles after that experience. Colors are far better too.
I like that a new Xbox is coming out. According to your video you didn't mention a date or estimated time line it would come out. So I guess it really won't be for awhile until something comes out. COVID really helped video games become more lucrative.
