Worth mentioning GamesCare is aiming to support the indie game market for the Mega Drive with the Neptune, they will apparently facilitate distribution of developer kits and other tactics to help develop the independent retro gaming scene

Tec Toy is a company that is very dear to us. They try so hard to get back into the gaming business! And Tec Toy's relationship with Sega is deep, old and loyal! Even the Japanese recognize this and maintain the production rights to old Sega products to these days. This “love” for a company that was almost destroyed by competition to the point of having a partner so passionate about Sega that he put money out from his own pocket to help Sega(and it was succeeded for a while) and after that he just forgave the debt! Incredible! His name is/was Isao Okawa. I see the same passion in Tec Toy! It's an unbelievable story!

As you said, TecToy still sells Master Systems and Mega Drives as "cheap" as R$ 200, or about as US$ 40 - cheap is in quotations as Brazilian average wage is around R$ 1500 -, way far cheaper than modern generation consoles. A PS5 is sold by around R$ 5000 in Brazil (you read it right, more than thrice the average wage, or 1/8 of Brazilian president's wage, for God's sake) which makes selling old generation consoles looking a great market.

I swore Brazil is Sega's paradise. Tec-Toy still supporting the Master System & Genesis/Mega Drive even after all these years.
Now the Neptune aka 32X but as a console now truly exists in some way is interesting.
They probably made hundreds of Brazil only games too
To this day, sonic is still one of the most popular game characters here, even before the movies.
But that is not enough for them to do something with the Dreamcast, like some re-release with online support😭

It would be so obvious to release a cover like M-Con V1 in the style of a Dreamcast, that works as a backdoor marketing stunt for an online store, like Nintendo Switch Online for smartphones.
The store would offer smaller games inspired by the MVU. But the controller itself would be a decently powerful gaming hardware, that can miracast video onto the smartphone.

Brazilians loves SEGA, Lady Decade did you seen the brand new handheld of Tec Toy?(the same behind the Brazilian Genesis and Zeebo console)
The handheld is called zeenix and is basically a handheld PC console like the Steam Deck (basically like the AYN Loki)
I like to believe...if the Zeenix will be a success maybe Sega will be reconsider a place for the development of hardware, just maybe...

Neptune actually being released is major. Imagine how many Sega fans will want to export it.
When I was a kid, the Sega Saturn wasn’t available. The stores were supposed to have it, but we went once a month for about a year to Toys “R” Us and they never once had it in stock. They always told us they had one for us, but they never even received.
Sega secretly released Saturn 6 months before they started advertising it. It was absolutely mind boggling and destroyed them.
Yeah, Babbage's had them. They appeared outta nowhere and no one bought them 🤷♂️
@@TexasHollowEarth I happened to hear about it and managed to snag one. Some of my fav gaming memories were with the Saturn. Gun Griffon, Virtua Cop, Dragon Force, Sega Rally. Still have mine and really cherish it.
I do hope they open this up for global distribution. I know at least two dozen friends that would pick this up.

I was always mystified by this unreleased console. I'm sad that this release isn't real hardware, but FPGA will at least provide the most accurate emulation possible.

Why bother? Used DCs are reasonably priced and plentiful. Also, easy to upgrade/replace the GD-Rom drive. I'm fixing up a spare Dreamcast now that I plan on selling. Waiting for the Noctua fan upgrade to come in.

Maybe because it's disc based? Who'd have imagined 20 years ago that cartridges would come back and discs would have fallen out of favor? The drive would be the most expensive part of it, and much of the appeal might be lost if it couldn't play actual DC games.

Well, we people here in São Paulo know who is creating the Neptune, but, tomorrow is the day the small company Gamescare is going to talk more. But we expect to be fewer units or a huge wait line to get one.
I hope it'll be possible to get a Neptune outside of Brazil. I'd love to get my hands on one of these!

I'm brazilian and being honest this was something I would expect coming from Tectoy, not an unknown company.
It baffles me nobody thought of this before, I mean, if it was never released then no one has rights to the design and name of the prototype. lol
SUPPOSING it will actually be released, with all promised features, this will most likely be the greatest retro related release of the last 10-15 years, the only thing I think comes close is the invention of the Everdrives. This is much, much better than those "Mini" consoles that dominated the retro scene a few years ago.
A SNES Mini or Megadrive Mini is pretty cool I'll give you that, but all they do is run roms. They don't accept real cartridges, original controllers, let alone add-ons like the Sega CD.
These Minis only have HDMI output too, which makes it too difficult to use them with CRTs thus breaking the immersion of playing in real hardware even further.
Then, there's the fact they're releasing an forgotten prototype, a piece of history, in fully functional form. This is enough to make any collector or retro gamer squeal with delight. hahah
This is no different than releasing, *TODAY* , a functional 3DO M2, SNES CD, Jaguar CD All-in-one, Taito WOWOW, etc.
If it ever gets released, and doesn't cost an eye, it's insta-buy for me!
I do own a Mega Drive 3 (brazilian equivalent of Genesis 2), and a Sega CD model 2, but I don't own a 32X or Everdrive, both of which are just too expensive right now.
I would happily trade my MD for a Neptune. I would just paint it black, stick a Sega decal on it and call it a day. hahah

The Neptune will also be much better than the Mega Drive 1 Tectoy re-released in 2017.
That one nailed the visual, the box art, the controllers, it could also play real cartridges and roms from an SD card, and was fairly priced... But!
It only had composite AV output, no HDMI whatsoever, heck it didn't even have S-Video or RGB like the original Megadrives had! Come on!
It also wasn't compatible with the SegaCD, 32X or even cartridges with special chips like Virtua Racer.
The final nail in the coffin was that it was basically emulating, which is okay if done properly, but it couldn't emulate MD's audio properly, even with patches from the community.
In the end it was more useless than a Mini console... Shame...

As a Brazilian, I will give a small addition to this information, here we had a law called "market reserve" that prohibited the import of foreign products, everything sold in electronics It had to be manufactured here, that's why what we called famiclones(famicon clones) were extremely popular, since Nintendo's copyrights didn't matter under Brazilian laws at the time, To compete with this, Tectoy partnered with Sega since either Sega accepted this partnership or there would be clones of the master system as well as the famicon, as the master was manufactured legally In Brazil, copyright rules were normally applied at that time, hence the relationship between sega and Tectoy, the market reserve also caused thousands of clones of other products As for computers, IBM's at the time had at least 10 manufacturers who cloned their models
Another interesting piece of information, the same Tectoy is the one who is advertising the steamdeck competitor called zeenix, and is also the one who manufactured a very unknown and unsuccessful console called zeebo,If you don't know Zeebo, take a look, it was strange, but very interesting in the original idea, something very close to the idea of the Xbox series s but in the 2010s
What is the "Zee" part that was obviously of significant enough ring to keep despite such apparent brand connection with a failed product? :)
@@AltCutTV Apparently they don't want the failure to be forgotten to prove that they learned from their mistakes and are doing it right this time, the main point of Zeenix's marketing is that they are Listening to what the community and customers want and find relevant to the product, from what I understand they are using this as an excuse to postpone the announcement of the official price in the country

The main concern here in Brazil is the price of the Neptune. It has not been revealed yet, but GamesCare is kown for their expensive price tags when we talk about selling old games and console maintenance (although their service is really first class). The consensus here is that the Neptune is gonna cost an surreal amount of money, but hey... a man can dream, right?

Just been in Dallas for VCF SouthWest, and saw the Neptune shell at National Videogame Musem
I'm brazilian and before SNES, Master System won in Brazil, Master System was my first console. After this, the history was almost the same of the all world, but Tectoy never stopped, and this still exist in parallel with the moderns consoles. And i love this, in my opinion this behavior should be an example in all world, deliver the old product in hands of some partner and call the indies to develop new games while you focus on the new and more modern. The big companies should learn this. For example, i'd a lot to have a Psvita, if Sony had some partner like Tectoy, Psvita could still alive. By the way Tectoy started to sell a new mini modern portatil console with windows 11 few days ago. Tectoy always try something new even with all difficult that the country offer.

But in anyway, having the original console was the only problem, because to play the games you could just rent them instead to buy, we didn't need to spend a lot money, except to buy the console, but some of my friends had the Phantom System that i discovery that was a NES pirate years later. But in popularity and TV commercial, Sega won, i just know about Mario when SNES arrived, before SNES i didn't know about the NES, but i knew about Phantom System, it's bizarre.

Sega was big in Australia until Ps1/N64. We even had a Sega theme park.
I always wondered how a Final Fantasy style RPG, maybe some kind of Phantasy Star, game would be like on the 32x/neptune.
There was a Phantasy Star generations remake for the PS2, would would be close to what you wanted
It wouldn't be much different I don't think, 32X was more hype than reality, it is still basically a 16 bit 2D system, mainly why it failed, and they had the Sega Saturn coming soon so the entire thing was just a bad idea.
@@buckjones4901 This is not true. The 32X is truly a 32 bit system (with the same co-processor the Saturn had), the difference with the Megadrive and Snes is HUGE. Its major flaw was the lack of support coming from SEGA, and the fact that it was sold very shortly before the Saturn. Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing showed that it has a lot of potential, sadly we never got to see its full capabilities exploited.
I'm from Brazil and I can say that tectoy, the company responsible for this, is much crazier than you imagine.

the only thing that I hate on the brazilian gaming scene is that our national market has always been Sega 16 bit and 8 bit consoles since their introduction, and nothing else, and now in 2024 they launch a new console, and guess what? It's another Sega 16 bit console...

A Sega e a Tec Toy fizeram parte da minha infância e de muitas outras pessoas e foram muito importantes para nosso acesso a jogos, pois aqui no Brasil tudo é muito mais caro, temos uma moeda desvalorizada. Eu estou impressionado com todo esse seu conhecimento, você conseguiu resumir grande parte da história. Parabéns.😢😊
Obs: A Tec Toy esteve muito perto de falir durante anos, se tornou uma empresa de automação industrial, deixando um pouco de lado o foco em games, mas recentemente anunciou o Zeenix, um PC portátil, que será lançado em alguns meses.

No, the franchise isn't famous in Brazil. Sega DreamCast and Nintendo Wii had poor sales in Brazil, eclipsed by PlayStation 2.

Brazilian here, I didn’t knew about this console release, so thank you for covering this release, I gonna check it out for sure. FPGA hardware is hard to buy and being imports usually they cost a kidney here, so hopefully the Neptune is more affordable being made here.

I always like to see these initiatives to bring modernized old hardware as well as new accessories, controls and games for classic platforms, this is very good and a great trend in retrogaming, as well as helping with the historical preservation of games! 🙂

@LadyDecade --- Imagine a universal region/format-free model that combines Genesis, Mega-CD (physical or digital), Mega-LD (digital), 32X, and maybe even games from compatible Sega platforms like Pica, Master System, Game Gear, etc. and with built-in karaoke functions!

just a small correction here.
the SNES was also produced in brazil by a local company called playtronic and made a huge success in the Brazilian market as well.
The take here is that brazilian market was always very strong in the retro community, since the sales of 8 bit and 16 bit games were always delayed by some years in comparison with the international market.
This made possible for a huge life span of this era, because only the rich could import the original consoles when they came out and only after some years, they general public could enjoy those games through parallel consoles made by the companies cce and gradiente and later the original ones assembled by playtronic and tectoy, making the sales of cartridges to last for decades in the shelves, even after 2 to 3 new console generations were already deployed.

Brazilian here. Sorry to burst everyones bubble, but as a long time Gamescare customer (the company producing the GF1), you may want to know Gamescare has a track record of incredibly garbage customer service. In fact, the worst I've ever experienced, and trust me, I ordered mods from those guys for the past 4 years. Also, keep in mind the "engineering" taking place is (probably, almost to a certain) no more than adapting Mister's 32X core, which is open source and already done by other people, and pretty sure the shell is also open source. So they take credit in something that will be very little theirs.
