As an owner of the Callaway CF-16s, I think you have caught onto the main issue of these modern spring face irons - proper gapping. I spent 3 different days at the range then back to a launch bay with a GCQuad with a club fitter to come up with the proper gapping (loft and lies) of PW to 5iron + Gap Wedge. I ended up gapping these clubs at the extremes like I would have gapped an old set of Forged Cavity Backed Blades PW to 3iron - but with 1 less club. My old standard gapping was PW @ 125, 9iron @ 135 and just go up 10 yards per club until 3iron @ 195 - I would then do 53/56/60 wedges 3W, D & Putter - had this setup in 3 sets of forged cavity back irons from 1990s until now. Being older with elbows that can't swing heavier irons with X steel shafts any longer, my new set of OldMan Clubs after MUCH work on finding the right setup for gapping, feel, swing weight, graphite shafts, etc, have removed both 3&4 irons but have a 23 degree 5iron that flies 195-200 - exactly like my old 3 irons (the CF-16 5iron spec is 24 degrees so I had it bent 1 degree stronger). I then left the 6 iron to spec at 27 degrees and this is 185 yards. I then had to bend every other iron between 1 and 4 degrees to get the right distances / spins and launch heights. In my opinion, you have to do this with these new hot face type clubs and you should aim for a 15 yard separation because they are not like forged blades that deliver +- 2 yards every time - their range is bigger so better to gap wider. If you spend the time to do this, my feeling is that you will be rewarded and it is worth it - if you desire the distance that maybe you use to have. Today, 30 years after I started golf and basically 50yrs old, I can honestly say that I feel very comfortable hitting my 5iron Callaway CF-16 iron with Regular Recoil shafts, bent 2 degrees upright and playing 23 degrees loft quit easily and controllably into a green at 195-200 yards - and that is night and day from years ago hitting a 6.5 riffle shafted Taylormade 300 Cavity Backed Forged 3 iron - night and day. But, the issue in the middle of the set is getting the lofts and lies correct for predictable gapping(like Rick mentioned in this video) - but it can be done. The advantage I find losing both a 3&4 iron is the ability to add 2 hybrids (a short and a long) to really give myself controllable playable clubs that I never use to have. If I played in the UK I might replace one of the hybrids with a driving iron or if I had a slow swing speed I may chose a 4/5W instead of my 2 hybrid. In this video Rick's 7 iron was 185 - that is way too high as he pointed out - and my guess bent 3/4 degrees it would spin better and stop. In all likelihood, a combo set of the strong lofted 5iron a standard 6 and then 'traditional' PW to 7iron, each slightly bent, would be a great set of these new Pings. Great Video.
Wow! What an absolutely stunning looking set of irons. I have never been a fan of PING irons in the past but I love the new direction that they are headed and I can’t wait to demo these for myself. The three loft options is a brilliant idea as well. Way to go PING!
i tested se irons against: JPX 919 Forged, P790, AP2, AP3, Wilson V6, Apex Pro and Forged. Took all of them to the range and on course today and I was completely blown away by the i500s. The shaft I used in these beauties was the NS 105 Tour SFlex and the feeling when you hit those irons is rally unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! buttery smooth and the ball flight is incredible! Going to order these guys and replace my good old mizuno mx200 :)
Rick--thanks for the GREAT reviews and performance tests of every golf clubI have ever been interested in buying. I credit YOU with my purchase of Ping G700 irons- truly the first time I can agree with the hype that manufactures produce to sell their clubs--the G700 are at least one club longer and do launch higher. You called that out instantly, professionally and your club tests are indisputable. Again, Thanks Rick!!!
Rick...since I've watched this video, it sold me on these, so I purchased them.....love them! I did get them in the Power Loft. The ball does jump off the face...Thanks for a great review of these irons.
Rick, I gotta hand it to you... This might be your best review yet; the format and presentation were absolutely superb. The on-course ball flight monitoring accompanied by you articulating your shot selection(s) were phenomenal. I also liked the comparison of on-course results versus GC Quad, along with the analyses behind "why" the ball was flying the way it did. Keep it up. Cheers.
These look a TON better then any of there previous irons!!! I just don't see me playing anything but my Rogue pro irons, they have been the best irons I have ever hit with the exception of the CF16 Apex irons. Thanks Rick keep up the Great work we all really appreciate you!!!!
Honestly I've always preferred Crossfield for his course vlogs but your reviews are now in a league of their own my man very watchable, pure class every stat you could possibly want eloquently laid out in a straight forward manor. Doesn't get much better than this long may it continue.
I got the retro lofts with my i500's. The gaping is awesome. The deal maker for me for the i500, over the p790, ap3 and cobra f9 forged was the fact that I could hit the i500 soft. I want a club that is good hitting it at 75 to 80%. I don't want to hit any iron full out ever.
Tested these the other day Rick and loved them. Exactly what you said they feel amazing. A little blown away with the price though. Love the channel keep up with the videos 👍
Great review Rick, getting better every iteration. I would definitely be interested in testing the i500. Ping is clearly contemporizing their lineup in an effort to appeal to a broader golf market by addressing more defined segments. I think they now have a lineup that enables one to progress from super game improvement - game improvement - super better player - better player - player irons. Nice progression to accommodate players as they get more serious about the game. Agree that a forged player iron should be on the docket as well. Love your stuff Rick, keep 'em coming!
I tried these and the i210 today. Great looking clubs. And great performance. I used to have the i200 and they were very forgiving and these were no different. Great review Rick. Thanks
Thank you Rick, I agree the standard loft 7 iron you will hit at golf simulators will make people think they are hitting it much longer, however, realistically it is tipped strong and I as well will go with the Retro lofts. Thank you
Just ordered mine today and this review has only got me more excited. Great work. Hopefully I can enjoy using them as much as you’ve appeared to. Seeing you’re from Burnley is also a bonus!
Tested the i500 & the i210 today. Was very confused with the extra distance I got from the i500's, now got the explanation. Loved the feel though, as I did with the i210's. i210 is more true to distance and look the parts, prefer them over the 500's.
Back in March, I purchased a set of G700s based solely on your review, especially the on-course testing aspects. You should've said they were rubbish, so I could've bought THESE!! 😂 The spin characteristics seem to be similar to your on-course G700 strikes. The mid irons drop and hop a bit forward, but the short irons spin back to the front of the green. I get the same with my G700s. Doesn't bother me at all. 😍
Great videos. I'm a noob, but your videos look like a perfectly balanced approach for new players and experienced. I'm looking for a set of irons and your videos are definitely helping.
Great review Rick. 12hc playing g400 4-6 and just ordered i500 7-pw. Just as forgiving as g400 but with much more control. Hopefully should help me get back down to single figure. Keep it up👍
Man those are some sexy irons, Ping never fails with it's irons, nor drivers! I still have a set of S56's and I love them, but i may consider these, Rick great video and testing analysis as always!
I FINALLY sold my Original Nike Forged Blades and picked up the i500..... The Nike Blades did me REALLY well; but Wowwww,, you get the same trajectory, almost the same spin rate, but FORGIVING!!! I’ve went from 2 HC back to scratch since picking these up, they are LEGIT!!! 💯🏆💯
I got fitted on the ping System but it works out for the very most part to be the retro spec, a fitting on a $30K trackman on my home course was only $60 for irons and they send your measurements and loft to ping and your setup PERFECT!!!
Philip Hickey without doubt! You can’t tell the difference from a blade at address! Once you hit the i500, and see how FAR and HIGH they go, that confidence will stay with you throughout every round you play! I had to get my 7-iron distance down from 199 fly to 164 during the fitting they were going so far, enjoy them my friend!
Love ricks reviews so much such a genuine guy! And if you like him a lot but wanna know more listen to the new Erik Andrea Lang podcast with rick! Swear best podcast episode yet
The question is Rick would you rather use the P790 or i500 ? As you gave the P790’s your #1 spot before. How do the two compare in strengths and weaknesses?
Thanks. Went to a Titleist fitting event and the rep didn't give me that advice maybe because I'm only a 16 handicap. Hit the AP3's pretty well and they felt great as did P790. Worried that the Ping i500's would not feel and sound as good because of the hollow construction with no dampening.
Was so exited for these. Was really hoping this was going to be a more of a players iron. I want the seven to be around 34-35 and good action around the greens.
Hey Rick - often in a lot of your videos you talk about how much you enjoy forged irons. Could you do a video comparing two iron sets - same make/brand where one is forged and one is cast? I'd like to get a better understanding of what the differences are in softness and how I can see an improvement in my game - while also discussing the drawbacks of forged.
I know this is a old post. But! The feel I believe also is really determined by the golf ball used. I use chrome soft and these are the best feeling irons I have ever hit. If you hit range balls at the driving range it is close to the worst feeling iron I have ever hit ha
I'd give them a try, I have always been either Ping or Titliest guy. Gaming the Titliest T-MBs right now and love them. These seem very similar to the T-MB.
Awesome channel Rick. With respect to the many clubs the manufacturer is bringing out, I agree they should, as they allow the consumer to pick a look they prefer rather been told they should use a club. A low handicap player will look more for the feel where the weekend warriors will take a club on looks hence the production on many clubs (even if they have the same performance)
I enjoyed the review, Rick. With all of the loft options, anyone should be able to put a set of irons together to meet their needs. Of course, you would need to hit each iron in the different lofts. It's a great looking iron, none the less.
20 year old technolgy .. maraging face ... still got my Orlimar tri-metals.... my pro can hit my 6 iron 220 yards !!!!..... but awesome looking club ... forged they are not .... you wont be distance consistent with these ... they look amazing ... excellent review ....
They look SO NICE, totally like a blade but you say they’re forgiving. I’ve never hit a hollow head iron, it’s about time I guess. I’m still playing with the Ping iBlades from 2002!
Hi Sam, I'm curious, how did you gap the clubs further down? I've only hit the 7i which feels great and flies like a rocket. My concern is how to fix the gap between 7 and PW (like Rick and other reviewers have picked up on as well). I almost think you would need to power spec 8, 9, PW and GW. Anyway, interested in hearing your thoughts.
Sir TogII Hi. Good point and when my clubs are finally delivered I’ll do a gapping test. But I’ve ordered a new 50 and 54 degree wedges to go with my 60. I hit my 60 degree 100 yards, so that leaves me with 5 clubs to fill 80/90 yards. Hoping to have it figured out for Spring next year anyway! 👍🏼 Cheers, Sam
Ah, well if your 60 degree lobwedge hits the 100y mark I doubt you'll have any issues with gaps. My 58 doesn't travel that far... Going for a fitting this weekend to see for myself :-)
Yes I will definitely try these out. They look good and per your review performance is what I am looking for. I tried the G700 but did not like them at all.
Rick you compress the ball really well. Good golf swing no doubt and hence maybe low back spin. I hit i500 and for my swing (what ever that is) i could carry about 160 give or take 3-4yrds and got back spin about ~6500 which is really good for me. I tried i210 and they were good too. I recently sold i200 due to heavier shaft from UST Recoil (for my swing). I tried Stock shaft of i210 and i500. Guess what I have ordered i500 and excited to get my new set of irons.

Looks nice and is definitely going to be popular on tour for ping players!!!!
They look amazing! I would love to try them!
Looks Very good :)
I think it quite simple but forgiving
Looks incredible definitely would try if I had the finance

I know I’m late to the game but I just bought my set today! Ping i500 - 5-PW, Retro Spec Lofts, KBS C taper 130 x shafts, Green dot, +2 up 🇺🇸💪🏼

Rick is my favorite, fair and honest evaluator
Long time viewer and in my opinion this is the best format I have seen to date for your reviews.
just love that sound
From what I can see is the hollow body designs do mean extra models of irons in the line up does make sense.
Rick...since I've watched this video, it sold me on these, so I purchased them.....love them! I did get them in the Power Loft. The ball does jump off the face...Thanks for a great review of these irons.
So we just not going to mention he almost dunked that pitching wedge shot?
Hit these today during a custom fitting session today.....ridiculously good clubs
I owned a pair of ping eye 2 irons and now have a set of g25s and never have switched since. Ping irons just feel great to me. Awesome video rick!
They really do look so nice and it's good that you can have them in the 3 different lofts
Yes I want to try them, they seem pretty good and offer great distance
Rick, I gotta hand it to you... This might be your best review yet; the format and presentation were absolutely superb. After watching both reviews the i500 is now my favourite I will be trying these beauty's
Tried these the other day didn’t expect much but they were amazing
These look a TON better then any of there previous irons!!! I just don't see me playing anything but my Rogue pro irons, they have been the best irons I have ever hit with the exception of the CF16 Apex irons.
Thanks Rick keep up the Great work we all really appreciate you!!!!
Just hit them today and loved the feel.

Rick you are sooo helpful! I’m looking to buy new clubs and your always reviewing them and giving me very good advice thank you soo much!

Hit my buddies 7 iron in this club today just hanging out at range and hit it really well
Tested these the other day Rick and loved them. Exactly what you said they feel amazing. A little blown away with the price though. Love the channel keep up with the videos 👍
They are nice looking for sure. I am not wild about strong lofts or hollow heads but I do love to try different clubs so yes I would try them out.
Always been a big Ping fan. These look absolutely gorgeous if a little pricey. Great review. Thanks
I think these are my new irons! Going to test them and get fitted next week.
I would game those in a heartbeat. I'm currently playing the Srixon 565.
They look so simple and refined, I would love the chance to try them
WOW....just take my money now!! Great review as always Rick, the look of genuine excitement speaks for itself!
Rick im around a 4 or 5 handicap. Ive been hitting eye2 for 20yrs because i love them. Would love to try these in the retro degree

Very excited about these irons. I am currently bagging S55, and I wonder about the difference.

Those looks beautiful. Haven’t even got to the 2 minute mark. Can’t wait to see what the numbers look like.
The irons look beautiful. Love that Ping finally made a forged iron. Would love to try these irons.
Man those are some sexy irons, Ping never fails with it's irons, nor drivers! I still have a set of S56's and I love them, but i may consider these, Rick great video and testing analysis as always!
favorite review. please make them all like this. AWESOME!!!
Can’t wait to test these myself.
Totally agreed with you. 3 product line would be enough!
Thanks for the review!
Look great and sounded fantastic!! Enjoyed the pro tracer Rick👍
I think these will be a perfect combo to my AVX
Hi Rick! Really liked how you showed your spin rate from other clubs. Helps give some context on how low or high the spin rates are.
Love the look of these - streamlined and 'utilitarian' at the same time.
Love the vids Rick helped me so much keep up the work
I FINALLY sold my Original Nike Forged Blades and picked up the i500..... The Nike Blades did me REALLY well; but Wowwww,, you get the same trajectory, almost the same spin rate, but FORGIVING!!! I’ve went from 2 HC back to scratch since picking these up, they are LEGIT!!! 💯🏆💯
Which left option did you choose?
I got fitted on the ping System but it works out for the very most part to be the retro spec, a fitting on a $30K trackman on my home course was only $60 for irons and they send your measurements and loft to ping and your setup PERFECT!!!
@@OneLovePsychAwesome. Thanks. I'm going to get fitted. They must look so clean at address. I'm psyched
Heard the podcast and was looking forward to this review.
Love ricks reviews so much such a genuine guy! And if you like him a lot but wanna know more listen to the new Erik Andrea Lang podcast with rick! Swear best podcast episode yet
Well done review. Great accent...I love the way you say "struggle" at 4:38...
Rick , love you videos !!!!!! Keep up te good work !! Thanks
Where would these rank in your top 2018 irons list, posted a few weeks back? Great video as always!!! Thanks Rick!!
Just got fitted into these triedalot of the newer irons preferred these
Love the new on course testing Rick!
The question is Rick would you rather use the P790 or i500 ? As you gave the P790’s your #1 spot before. How do the two compare in strengths and weaknesses?
Need to try these
Great review Rick these clubs come with a variety of shafts be good to see a review switching the shafts to see the difference
Great review Rick! The huge gap from the wedge to 7 is crazy. Dont know how that would play
These irons look amazing!!! 😍😍😍
Thanks. Went to a Titleist fitting event and the rep didn't give me that advice maybe because I'm only a 16 handicap. Hit the AP3's pretty well and they felt great as did P790. Worried that the Ping i500's would not feel and sound as good because of the hollow construction with no dampening.
Thanks for the video
I'm all over these. Just need to figure out if I'm going with these over the P790...
Great video!!! Love your review videos! You are one of the many inspirations behind my youtube golf channel!!!
Awesome review Rick, as always.
Rick, you’re tearing my heart between p790 and i500!!! Time for a head to head!!!
Really like your club reviews, thanks.
Rick tested the i500s vs my i200s. Overall the i500 is better in every category. Bought them.
Really stylish irons, keep up the good work Rick.
Don't normally like ping irons but I do like these!
good and honest review Rick!
I like the addition of the comparison to the other clubs in the range. do the comparison with other brands but similar make. That would interesting
I’m gonna have to go test these one!
They look SO NICE, totally like a blade but you say they’re forgiving. I’ve never hit a hollow head iron, it’s about time I guess. I’m still playing with the Ping iBlades from 2002!
Now im definitly going to have to try these i was going to get the taylormade p770 but now im not so sure anymore
Just bought a set of these Rick. I was hitting the 7-iron 180 yards with range balls into wind! Great feel also 👍🏼👌🏼
Hi Sam, I'm curious, how did you gap the clubs further down?
Mullered the 7 iron today whilst trying, hit it 200 yards 😂 heat and power!
Another great video. Love the look of these clubs.
I need a new set and might try these out
Would like to try these, a combination set with G at longer irons might be a great combination
Love the look of them.
I love your vids man and all the reviews are so good, keep up the great work!!
Excellent review and insights as always - thanks Rick!
Thank you!
Would love to compare these to my P790's. Great review as always!! Thanks Rick!!!
Always love Pings
