    I tried both these clubs at my fitting. I ended up going with i210 with the idea that I would “grow” into them. I’m so glad I did. My handicap went down considerably and the more I use them the better I get. Beautiful clubs too. I get all kinds of compliments on the course. I was also fitted for a gap wedge for the first time and went with the Ping Glide. Another game changer. I can’t wait to get fitted for the rest of my wedges.
    Great channel guys. Keep up the solid work.

    Knowing that this is a 5-year-old review of irons. I am grateful to have listened to your comments about what these irons will give a mid-to-high handicap player. Forgiveness is often used to express the technology results but not explain how a player will ultimately use these irons.

    Great videos - your guy's stuff is addicting. As a returning 57 year old player coming off 12+ years of not hitting, I decided to sign up for lessons and a fitting. Last clubs I had were DCI irons (gold triangle) with DG S300 shafts, usually shooting in the 80s. I tried a number of the usual suspects for the "mid handicapper" and these were on the top of my list before hitting and the fitting. I ended up vastly preferring the feel of the i210 - felt like a good forged blade. Ended up with DG 120 S300 as I was inbetween regular and stiff (depending on the shaft), and we figured since I was planning to work my swing back up, my speed would come up and I'd rather hit it straight than far given a choice. So far so good. These along with a G400Max are a great setup.

    I’ve been a big fan of the channel since I started playing golf in April. I have old Titleist 762 DCI irons and hit my 7 iron about 165. I recently went and did a fitting and got fit into the i500. I told my fitter I didn’t like the feel and sound, but he felt the added distance was what I needed. As a 12 handicap, I don’t lose strokes on distance, I lose it on not having control of my flight and distance. I swung the i210s and other irons much better and liked the feel, but my fitter was prioritizing distance. I am now looking into other irons that give me more distance control and not pure distance. Thanks for the insight as always!

    Thanks guys! Working with Nate over at Miles in Ann Arbor this week. Currently hit the Ping G irons, but working on my game. Plan to check out the G425 and i500, but was unsure about adding the i210 to the mix. Current 7 iron is in the 160 yards range with 85 or 86 club head speed. Not looking for crazy distance, but similar to Sam would love more consistent distance and want to hold greens. Suggestions would be much appreciated!

      Plus 1 I’d love to see the spin numbers and launch/ angle descent numbers of this in retro.. will it still be very hot off the face or will you gain some consistency like an i200 turning down the loft.. what effects would it have on the club going with retro soec

      See Michael Newton's review of the retro lofted i500's. The retro i500 7 iron was actually shorter by 3 yards compared to his prior review of standard lofted i210's (at same avg club head speed). The idea you can retro loft the i500's and still get the same distance with more spin is not possible. There is no free lunch.

    Loving the new mid handicap testing series. Like Sam, I'm a 13 handicapper with good swing speed. I've been fitted, but the fitter has leaned towards recommending P790 and other players-distance irons when I don't think I need the distance. My 30 year old Ping eye 2 7 iron results in a 175 yard distance, whereas the new irons add 20 yards. I need distance control, better dispersion, and overall improved consistency for someone who doesn't play/practice as much as I'd like. Thanks again and feel free to offer any advice for someone in my situation.

    I’ve been hitting Cleveland TA7 irons for many years and as I enter my 60s I feel it’s time to buy the next set to take me into the latter years of play. I’m a 13 handicapper and can still hit clubs for distance, example 7 iron is typically 165 yards. I like a blade look but definitely need some forgiveness. I like to play a small draw but when things are going wrong my left shots go too far left. I am asking if the I 210 or the I 500 retro should be my focus for a fitting. These clubs are beautiful but beauty in in the eyes of a guy playing better golf.
    Thanks for your feedback.

    re:comments on the P790, given that the foam is there to dampen the sound, there is no way in hell it adds to ball speed compared to an empty head. It basically reduces (not increases) the trampoline effect by absorbing energy. It would be more accurate to call it "speed reducing foam".

    Bought a custom fit set of ping i500 irons in February to replace my Callaway apex cf16. The lofts are very similar however the i500 wins in the looks dept. Since being fitted in the same shaft (px 6.0) I have found that the i500 is less forgiving and carry distance is also down. Lovely club but I'm not getting the most out of mine

    Thank you for addressing the swing speed handicap correlation. I saw a comment below about Sam needing to work short game because obviously if you hit a 7 iron 200 yards you should be a better golfer. Reminds me of why people have a certain perception of "golfers". Golf is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, it is a game right? Fun can mean so many different things to so many people. I don't think it's fair to discredit a certain iron or category because it' not fun to you. This is why every video says to get fit.

    With PXG, that COR2/TPE is vital because of how thin the face is. Without it, the face will plastically deform and the iron's useless. With some of these other hollow constructions the faces, while still thin, aren't thin enough that it reaches plastic deformation following impact. I think as long as the feel is there and the face doesn't need the added support, the hollow body is completely fine.

    I'm going for a full bag fitting session soon and I really hope I get to try these. I don't play very much these days and I'm struggling to find consistency. I'm gravitating towards the i500 purely on the looks aspect, but I'm slightly concerned that chipping and small pitches might also be 'hot'. It would be great to see a test where you try these shots rather than full shots. I know I'd be willing to accept this new type of iron category won't spin as much on the full shots, but perhaps not on the chips and pitches.

    comparisons of different club styles always turn out this way. I wouldn't compare the same iron number, it would be better to compare clubs by the distance they travel. compare a 500 8 iron vs 210 7 iron. probably go similar distance and maybe similar spin (or closer).

    If you retro spec the i500's you're most likely going to lose the distance advantage over the i210's. Michael Newton (who has a great repeatable swing) acquired demos in the retro lofted i500s and they were actually 3 yards shorter (7i) than what he saw in his earlier review of the i210's (both sets of swings had identical avg. club head speed).

In standard loft form, would you go 4 to PW and then UW or swap the UW for a 50 and 56 degree Glide; any advantages in UW over Glide ? Would really like to see a video on whether a 3 iron in the Ping i500 18 degree would outperform the TM P970 UDI as these are probably best option for fairway finder to work alongside i210's ?

    Will be going for a refit next spring for the i210’s. Earlier this yr in February I Got custom fit at Club Champion NJ for apex pro forged ‘19 smoked irons 5-PW. (See my trackman#s below). The fitter and I were so blown away by the distance gains (10-12 yards) on my 5 iron compared to the X-forged ‘18 we overlooked the low back spin i was getting.
    5 iron : 3,938 rpm , 119 mph ball speed, 1.42 smash, 17.3 deg launch, 179 yds carry, 192 yds total. (13 yards run out).
    7 iron: 4,465 rpm, 109 mph ball speed , 1.36 smash, 18.0 deg launch, 155 yds carry, 168 yds total (13 yards run out).
    9 iron: 5,675 rpm, 97 mph ball speed, 1.24 smash, 19.1 deg launch, 128 yds carry, 139 yds total (11 yards run out)
    This is way too low. (Backspin and launch). My Trackman report doesn’t have “decent “ angles, but with 13 thru 11 yds of runout (5 thru 9 iron) obviously this isn’t good. I played 21 rounds with these Irons, love the feel &looks but i need more backspin. Those run out #’s are high, because if i hit a green with a my 9 iron I wasn’t getting 33 ft of runout. Closer to 15-20 ft. Certainly wasnt a few feet. Greens were typically soft in NYC.
    Looking forward to getting fit for the i210’s. I guess i can have him order new heads and have him swap out the club heads keeping my shafts/grips. Or order new clubs assembled directly from ping. Ill see what he recommends or what they typically do in this situation.

  • @georgesmith4639
    @georgesmith4639 6 лет назад

    I'm curious why you think you can just retro spec the i500 and still get that "extra club" of distance with added spin. If that were possible then Ping would just ship the retro spec lofts as the default and avoid the low-spin criticism. There would be no point in the current default lofts unless someone WANTED shorter carry. Ping selected the default loft to give the maximum distance with just enough spin and descent angle to give a reasonable stop on the green. if you add loft the carry will be shorter.

    I'm a 4 handicap and play the old Ping i5 irons and haven't found anything over the years to significantly improve my iron play. I'm looking to get a new set of either the i500 or i210 and would like your thought on something. Love the feel and look of the i500 but am concerned that the dispersion and distance control won't be as consistent as the i210 or my i5 for that matter. If I got the i500 I'm thinking about the retro loft to add more spin and control. What are your thoughts regarding the consistency of the i500 vs the i210? If they are similar then I'll go with the i500 for the extra distance and amazing feel but I don't want to sacrifice control. Thoughts? Thanks for your feedback!

    I play an older model exotics driver and hybrid. Love the Xcg7 beta hybrid. I feel like my XCG6 driver isn't optimal for me. I see lots of senior tour guys going to Exotics fairways and hybrids. Thoughts? Reviews?

    Have you guys gotten any feedback from customers that the finish/coating on the heads of the Ping G700 (as you point out similar appearance to the i500) gets scuffed/damaged with only minor wear or usage?

    Do the retro spec lofts have the same bounce as the std spec and power spec? Or do they just bend the lofts weaker so you’re getting more bounce?

    I LOVE hearing the in dept reasoning, the knowledge and just things to think of when thinking of irons. I want to ask something regarding of what you talked about with the P790 irons. I play the callaway apex cf16 and I do not struggle with speed, I hit my current 7 iron around 184-188 yards carry and club head speed of 93 (trackman gave me spin numbers around 6k which I think is good) on my gamers but can krank it up a few (but I never ever do that). But the flyers...omg, they just fly so long. I am kinda leaning towards the apex pro version but also weaklofting my clubs 2 degrees. Any guidance or so that can help me out? (anyone can reply to this, especially if you have done something similiar). Either I sell my current ones and go for a club with less tech and more traditional loft or just re-loft my current ones.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Weaker lofts should protect against flyers a bit more, but any low spin iron model (i.e. P790) will introduce potential issues in that regard for a player with a lot of speed. Start by weakening your current gamers and test that out, if that doesn't work look into a more traditional shape iron design.

    How much of the change in spin rate off Sam’s old irons compared to the i210 would be down to the worn face on his old gamers?
    For the guys who come in and get fit for irons with such cranked lofts, how many wedges are they putting in the bag? It doesn’t make any sense to me to put a 42° PW in the bag when you’ve just got to add another gap wedge to fill the gap.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Unlikely any difference cause by wear on Sam's G25's, would have to be extremely well used (and possibly abused 😆) to see a ball flight difference due to worn a club face on a set of irons - particularly as we were dealing with a perfect lie, dry ball, etc.
      Strong lofted iron sets have affected the way the wedges need to be configured for some players, but it's not an insurmountable task. Set composition has evolved, the fitter just needs to be knowledgeable in how to set up a bag for a player that has irons configured for more distance.

    Do you find that slower swinging players benefit from flexible face irons such as the i500? I'm wondering if there is a minimum club head speed needed to cause the face to flex.

    • @clubchampionmedia

      More beneficial the slower the swing for sure, designed to help players get more distance

    Are the I500 long irons something I could even match up with my current I200s my current set isn't power spec and stops at 5 iron but I feel like I need a 3 or 4 iron that I can use as a fairway finder on shorter par 4s. Great video as always

    • @clubchampionmedia

      You could, likely need to go retro lofts (or close to) in the i500's to have it blend properly with i200's

    What is it with irons if you can take a proper divot with a medium swing speed but when the swing is sped up it is usually hit thin? Is that a weight issue?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Could be, or could be the tip section of the shaft getting a bit too active.

  • @bensearle8819

    Do they just bend them for retro or power spec ,or do they build them with the standard bounce, as I wouldn't want the bounce to change by 2 degrees

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      According to Ping's website: "Club bounce angles will vary slightly if ordered with non-standard loft specs."

    If you have speed choose the higher spinning i210 - makes a lot of sense to me. However, most of us do not have that speed which makes the i500 an interesting choice. Looking at other RUclips reviews two issues arise: the odd flyer going 10-15 yards further than typical (no use to me) and some gapping issues - 5i-7i gap is perfect but 7i-PW is a bit too wide. When full sets are available you need to get an average speed golfer to test the full set to see if the gapping concerns are real or statistical quirks

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Gapping issues would be down to an individuals performance, not really something we can standardize in a test. Same with the flyer or hot occasional shots, that's just the player's swing conditions on that swing, the iron itself will perform the same on every shot if struck the same way.

    If I have a club head speed of 118 (baseball) is there a good chance that the p790 clubs would be too hot for me? Just got fitted and went with ping g400 lst and m3 3 wood with the loft up because the normal loft was like 290 yards and I love them. I ask because those p790’s have caught my eye but the distance scares me for when I get to my wedges.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад +1

      There's a pretty good chance Dominic, sounds like you've got a lot of speed. Now if you are a very high spin player in your irons, then they may be a suitable fit.

    Think those 2 would make a good blended set? Or would there be to big of an over lap?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Tough to blend, but you could get creative with the loft adjustments to make it work. The i500's produce a lot of ball speed though so it would take some tinkering.

    • @bobb3rdown676
      @bobb3rdown676 6 лет назад

      Or maybe bridge the gap with a same numbered iron. Instead of 3-pw. Would be 4-pw but with 2 6 irons or something.
