Small negative point - Richie Blackmore was not "one of the guitarists" - of his genre he was "the guitarist"

Another thing to note about the drummer is that he basically does a blazing solo over every verse and then switches to normal beat-keeping over the chorus. It's nuts.

You are correct about Glenn Hughes's lasting singing ability. One prime example is the "Burn" performance he took part in after this concert's organ player Jon Lord died. It was done with orchestra and guests at the Royal Albert Hall and Glenn shares the lead with Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. That is something to behold.

Those are with Ian Gillan. Great singer but his technique seems slightly unhealthy from the start, and so you could hear the downfall all the way through eighties until today. He might also have been overconfident and careless with his voice at the peak of the Purple success years.

@@jussirytkonen2871 Gillan sounded good - real good - up until about the mid 90's. That's when he lost that rough edge and became a bit more pitchy sounding. Here's a show from 1990 - See what the vocal teacher has to say about this. ruclips.net/video/WBkDqqXnf0U/видео.html

Jussi Rytkönen I heard that the year long party that was his time touring with Black Sabbath did his voice in.
I saw him on his first solo tour of the U.K. ... 1978? ...with his .. almost Jazz/rock fusion outfit. His voice was amazing. Check out the track Down the Rd , from that era if you don’t know it . Fantastic.
Even over the past decade I’ve occasionally heard him really pull off his performances like his old self. Bloodsucker and Hard Loving man come to mind.

My friend backed Glenn and Bruce Dickinson on this song at The Royal Albert Hall. Glenn still sounds good, because unlike Coverdale and Gillan, he didn't wear his voice out through constant touring and recording, basically doing very little until the early to mid 90s. Although he does have a great voice it can be fragile (you can hear it on some live Purple recordings) and he can't do two nights in a row, always has a rest day in between gigs (which is obviously the right thing to do if possible). His constant screeching live these days does get on my tits somewhat though, it's as if he has to constantly show off rather than simply sing the damn song!

  • @GreenerHill

Glenn Hughes has a voice like fresh air, whereas David Coverdale's voice is a tuneful roar, but I think they have a similar vibrato.

Great Video!! You really should make a video on those long career singers, like Hughes, Coverdale, Dio...showing how they evolved along their careers, how they managed to deal with getting old. It would be Great! (Specially about Dio as he went from the Doo wop years, passing through a more southern rock sound and a more deep-purple-ish sound with rainbow, and going to a more heavy metal sounding...what a versatility)

You have to listen to Made In Japan the live album from Mark Ii. It wasn't changed in anyway in the studio like all the other live great live albums of the early seventies. It is exactly how it was played. Ritchie said people want that experience of a real live show.

    • @Codex7777

Made in Japan changed live albums forever. Before it, live albums were a throwaway type thing, usually pushed by record companies to make a few extra bucks. The quality, atmosphere and huge success of MiJ changed all that. Suddenly, it became seen as essential, by bands, to have a proper live album in their discography. From being rare and cheaply produced, they became commonplace and decently produced. All those other great 70s live albums followed in MiJ's wake. To many, critics and fans alike, it remains the greatest live album of all-time! It also happens to be the 2nd album I ever bought. I played it to death, so I'm probably biased,. :)

Jon Lord knocks the organ a bit to make the mechanics in it change the sound .. it is not accidental. This was one of the truly great live bands of the 70s and 80s. I have seen them many times. But not here or with this exact lineup. The drummer is phenomenal and Ritchie Blackmoore is the conductor .. he gives visual hand-cues to him (Ian Paice) as they progress through violently loud live performances.
They were quite something to behold back in the day.
    Cheers 🍺

You honestly think he sounds like a guy in his 60s there? Heavy touring takes it's toll on ANY voice. Anybody can have off nights. Plus the mic is pretty poor in the mix. For the age he is, Glenn's definitely still got it.
David Coverdale's still got his smokey velvet crooning voice but the problem is he still tries to scream those old Whitesnake glam tracks that were pushing his voice even back in the day. Difference is when Glenn does choose selectively to scream he can still pull it off in his bloody late 60s.

That's one thing I totally disliked about Hughes during this era - his overkill. I believe he thought he could replace Ian Gillan in this area, as they followed in DP Mark 3. No one could touch Gillan's screams in the 70's ! And he had some moments later in his career also - check out his Toolbox album from around 1990.

No mention of Jon Lord, the keyboardist? And correction, David Coverdale does NOT still sing well at all. He lost his voice several years ago. As for Glenn, he still has it though.

And if you believe that then I have a planet to sell you as well. Only when Glenn Hughes and Tommy Bolin came into the band towards the end are the only ones to be on drugs. They were drinkers and not drug addicts. Blackmore, Lord and Paice never did drugs and the previous singer Ian Gillan was not on drugs at all. They were just drinkers and were totally against drugs. They could not have stayed a band since 1968 if they were druggies. Your silly uninformed assumption means nothing at all.

Hughes' over-emoting onstage I find more annoying than anything else.
As you're a vocal coach, I'm waiting for you to start analysing some singers outside of capital-R Rock, those performers from my era maybe (post punk to late '00s), who are more about the idiosyncracies ("vocal tension? oh you bet!") than the "legitimate" techniques (which they might never have been able to acquire)
For certain of my favorite singers of all time, vocal coaching and the acquisition of greater legitimate technique might have sustained their voices and careers, but artistically it did them a lot more harm than good.

Glenn Hughes can do a Coverdale too and (arguably) do it better than him. Glenn's voice is flexible enough for rock, blues, metal, soul, funk and motown/rnb
He even featured in a dance track. KLF - America (What Time is Love)

Glenn doing David better than he does himself? What have you been smoking? IMHO, Glenn is nowhere near Coverdale and especially in DP, his vocals often ruined the performace of the band for me. Never liked his vocal very much, too girly. But that’s just my oppinion.

Ponyboy Curtis please listen to "Highway Star" Glenn Hughes version from tribute to Deep Purple Re-Machined. It is mindblowing. I always loved Ian Gillan and DP mark2, but honestly, Glenn did such an amazing job in that one, that i must say that i prefer his version over the version of Ian 😏 Really.
