After cleaning use turtle wax, used to polish a car, to protect your glass doors and shower walls. DO NOT get any on the shower floor as it gets very slippery! The polish really works to keep scum off the doors, chrome and walls.

I'm a chemist and actually there is a science to how much baking soda you should add to your vinegar. Acids are neutralized (e.g., de-activated) with sodium bicarbonatej (e.g., baking soda) which is why it is often used to treat acid spills. You'll know it has neutralized the acid when the bubbling/fizzing has stopped after you first combine the two in your bowl. Unless you're using an excess of vinegar to baking soda, what you're really doing with the baking soda is using it as an abrasive. But, you're killing your industrial strength vinegar and wasting money. The reason your method is still working is because you're rubbing the lemon, which contains citric acid, onto the glass before you apply the vinegar/baking soda mixture. What I would advise you to do is create a thickened vinegar and use your sponge to apply it to the shower doors the same way you're now doing with the lemon (you can add lemon juice to it if you like the scent.) Measure out about four times as much of thin vinegar as you want to end up with once it's reduced and thickened. Pour the vinegar into a small skillet or saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium to simmer the vinegar. Check the vinegar periodically to maintain a steady simmer, adjusting the heat as necessary. Once the vinegar has reached your desired thickness, remove the vinegar from the heat source when it's just about as thick as you want it -- it will thicken slightly more before it cools. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to about 30 minutes, depending on the starting thickness and the volume of vinegar. Once cool, apply this to your shower door. Let it stand about 15-30 minutes for it to do its job, this time at the fullest strength. While waiting, mix your baking soda with ordinary tap water to create an abrasive paste. Typically 2-3 tablespoons of water to half of a cup of baking soda does the trick. Apply and scrub as you already do and then squeegee everything off! This will work SOOOOOO much better than the results you're currently seeing. Let me know if you try it and what you think!

@@lpcookie1 Bar Keepers Friend is all natural. I still wouldn’t use it in a shower enclosure of any type as it scratches. They are small scratches, but it does “scour.” Rain-x has pretty inert ingredients as well. It’s 90% isopropyl alchohol and a few other simple compounds that help it work it’s magic. While her products are all natural they can still burn through your skin with prolonged contact. Ever squeeze a lemon only to learn you have a hangnail? Ouch! Or get vinegar in your eye? I hate it when that happens!

Where I live we have very hard water and as I am in an apartment can't install a water softener. Don't have a shower door either, just a shower curtain. About twice a week I use just a vinegar and water mixture (25% vinegar and 75% water) in a spray bottle and after a shower will spray the enclosure, the tub and the shower curtain with it. I use a squeegee after a minute and wipe it all down, then follow that with a wipe down with an old towel to dry it. No scrubbing involved! Just a swipe with the squeegee and a dry down with a towel. I actually do this right after my shower so I am still in it. Much easier to clean when you are in it. Works like a charm and the tub, faucets, tub surround and shower curtain are spot free! The vinegar smell dissipates pretty quickly and at the mixture I use is not a strong smell. After 4 1/2 years of living here, the new bathroom that had been installed before I moved in still looks brand new!

Actually the best way to remove soap scum and film is with Bar Keepers Friend which is like Ajax but it is not as abrasive. The secret is the oxalic acid in Bar Keepers Friend that very easily dissolves the film much better than citric acid in lemons. BYW, oxalic acid is natural and made from rhubarb. Oxalic acid is sold in hardware stores as wood bleach for your fences and decks, so you could use the acid with a little baking soda for the cheapest solution.

Hi! Thank you for the video, very informative.
In my old house the shower doors were from 1960, with Central Florida hard water build up. I tried everything, home made cleaners, store bought, you name it, I tried it. But as soon as it dried to within an hour, it looked as if I hadn't even tried. I did it one time, but I had tried so many things that day I don't know what cleaned it. Then my in-laws came back from vacation, and would not use the squeegee, it was back to square one. I couldn't remember the combination of products that cleaned it, and gave up. I learned to live with it. I considered it an extra layer of frosting on the glass. Porcelain on the cast iron tub shined, the tile shined, close enough. I was fighting 25 years of build up and bad habits. Sometimes you got to pick your battles. If I ever get my own house again I don't want shower doors. It's vinal shower curtains that can be washed a few times, then replaced. Spray mild cleaner on them daily, water/dish detergent/vinegar mix.
Take care, stay safe, have a nice day.

I have some tips: barkeepers works great especially if the build up is extreme, The Works shower cleaner works great spray walk away 10 mins, use surface sponge scrub has you wash away, repeat the hard spots like rust if nessasary great for fiberglass showers and sinks etc... And one of the best ways especially if you stay up on your shower doors made of glass, try using a Bounce dryer sheet use just like a cleaning cloth, get wet and scrub in circles until you form a mild soap film, rinse, squeegee, micro fiber. To get long lasting effects to use rain x after cleaning. I do love my vinegar and baking soda, just faster with Bounce dryer sheets. Works great on the stainless steel fixtures to for water stains. Cars too. Thank you for sharing 😊 😊 Give it a try.

Shut the door to the shower after you throw a rug or towel to step out on to. Take a small watering can that holds about a quart of water and start at the top to wash it down. The best squeegee is a wide blade that has no metal so it doesn’t scratch and you can also use it on you skin to keep the towels dryer. Mine lives in the shower and the shower walls and tub spout along with the doors are squeezed off after each use.
You wont want to use Lysol toilet bowl cleaner or Zep toilet bowl cleaner but the works best in this high limestone water area. I have been using a s fuzzy toilet bowl brush that I can but at Cleaning Ideas to spread my solution. I rub the cleanser across the area until the glass feels smooth and then I rinse it with the watering can. When it is dried off then I spay it with a light mist of Protective Silicone Polish and wipe and buff it with a microfiber cloth ( from AJP Chemicals, Canyon Lake, TX , find it in net about $13 for Qt.) this works even when there is no water softener for the house. I have to do this every week not every month here in the San Antonio, Texas area

My cleaning hack for scum buildup in the shower is oven cleaner...yes oven cleaner..once a month left on for 20 minutes rinse off dry with towel then clean the glass chrome and fixtures with glass cleaner that has ammonia in it. Always clean and shiny. Make sure you open a window. I don't recommend if people have asthma or breathing troubles but I've done this for years and even on plastic/fiber glass tubs and showers. No damage and always clean. I'm free to do another quick chore while waiting for the cleaner to work it's magic, but I need to stress I've always had an extension spray shower head to clean off the oven cleaner, I wouldn't recommend doing this without one it would be to time consuming. I should add that everywhere I've ever lived had hard water. In some places I've actually had to do this 3 or 4 times moving in because the old build up was so bad. I always re-clean before moving in because I'm very OCD about clean, my clean vs. other people's clean are NOT the same.

With over 300 comments I don’t have that much time. I have tried everything. Shower doors was filthy on purchasing the home. In twenty odd years, I have tried everything. The swans once had mold. That is not my problem. The blue haze has never come clean. Shrub free, works a little. Lime away was ok. CLR, the same results. Blue haze remains, always. Looks great while it is still wet. But once it dries it is back. Just tried a vinegar spray. 90% vinegar , 5% water and dawn. 20 minutes later, it is still there. Again while it is wet, I start to think it works. But sadly no effect. I think I will try the razor blade next. Sadly I flipped my doors around frequently so no I believe neither side looks clean. I see great results on you tube. If the name brands don’t work, why keep wasting my time. This is a very old video, so I don’t expect answers…..but maybe another viewer can help. I will try to check back frequently. If I am successful, I will add it.

I haven't cleaned my tub or shower in years! And they look like new! How often do you clean soap scum from the inside of your dish washer? How about from inside your washing machine? Correct, never. The best way to clean soap scum is never get it in the first place. Chunk all your bath soap and only use liquid soap. The main ingredient in bar soap is Sodium tallowate. Sodium tallowate is a true soap made by combining the fatty tissue (or tallow) of animals, such as cattle and sheep, with lye, typically sodium hydroxide". It's pure white animal fat that holds the soap in a clump. It sticks to the tile or tub and water will not run over it. Sits there and the water evaporates and leaves mineral deposits on the fat. Repeat a few times and you have "soap scum". Liquid soap or "detergent" holds oily skin residue in suspension and it washes everything away when you rinse. Just like your clothes or dish washer. Also an added benefit is that your drains will never clog up!!

  • @Cyberbronco

Great advice, but don’t use the green scrubby side of that sponge. It will scratch the glass and metal. Use a pink sponge with white scrubby side which are designed for bathrooms and won’t scratch.

Very easy.....just spray it on blue, leave it for 10-30 minutes depending on how dirty the shower, tub, and glass, then rinse away. It was so easy! But now it does absolutely nothing. I am wondering if they changed the product.

Thank you for sharing your methods to clean the shower door. I think using natural and biodegradable products are good for the environment. For those of you who have bathrooms that are tiled with natural stones , be careful to avoid vinegar contacting the surface for longer than a minute :)

@@natasha16612 I normally use castile soap (1 tablespoon and 8 oz water), spray the tiles , wait for 10 minutes, then rinse. If that doesn’t work, try mixing baking soda and toothpaste (and a little water, so it would stick to the tiles), apply to the surface , then use a brush to scrub, and rinse.
I keep a window wiper, and wipe off the shower doors, tiles after every time I shower. If you have glass shower door, you can clean them, then apply RainX to prevent mineral build up, so you won’t have to clean them so often ;)

That is why I asked you how to get rid of water deposits from the white bathroom tile.

    • @TramAiKhanh
      @TramAiKhanh Год назад

@@natasha16612 Baking soda and toothpaste ratio is about 1:1 (maybe a little more baking soda). However, it would only treat soap scum and whiten the grout lines, not removing hard water stain. For that, I recommend vinegar and baking soda (since you don’t have natural stone), or “Bring it on” product, if vinegar doesn’t cut it. To prevent this (after you clean) , you need to treat the water (installing water softener system), or wipe off excess water after every shower, and clean them once in a while. 🙂
