    Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the late (or is he), great-and highly revered-Albus Dumbledore and whether or not he created his own HORCRUX before his untimely death.
    For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the term or haven’t read up on your Harry Potter lore recently, here’s a quick review of Horcruxes, what exactly it takes to create one, and where they pop up in the Harry Potter series.

      Hey big fan! A bit off topic of the current video but I wouldn't mind a little input if you see this.
      I've had my own theory that most Muggles have a small percentage of Wizard/Witch DNA in a reflective manor on how most Wizard/Witch families have some kind of Muggle ancestry (hence the term Half-blood). For a real life example most modern humans have a small percentage of Neanderthal DNA despite the fact that they died out tens of thousands of years ago.
      If this is true then theoretically any muggle has a chance (albeit a small one) to spawn a new Wizard/Witch no matter who they have the kid with.

    Also just to add to the debunking, the only way to reverse the spell that creates a horcrux is to feel real and true remorse for causing a death.
    Dumbledore lamented and showed such remorse for Ariana’s death that I doubt any horcrux he could have created would have survived that.

  • @balrighty3523
    @balrighty3523 8 месяцев назад +1

    4:29 There's a problem with this. Making a horcrux cannot only be a deliberate act where you go through a terrible ritual and then intentionally place the fragment of your soul in another vessel. Why?
    Because Voldemort only meant to split his soul into seven pieces, one in himself and six in horcruxes. Either he didn't mean to make a horcrux when he committed murder at the Potter's, or he did, but meant for that piece of his soul to go into something else, not Harry. Because he succeeded, but didn't know he had. After his attack on the Potter's, he had six horcruxes but thought he only had five, hence making Nagini his final horcrux.
    For that to make sense, making a horcrux has to be something you can do by accident and without realizing you've done it.

    It's a tough one but you could make the argument that it took that dark ritual to make him feel so regretful that his character/ideology did a 180 & he became the soft, jolly old wizard in his later years.
    Having an immortal creature be your souls vessel is so clever I would've been more surprised to learn that it was fake as it itself could explain why Phoenixes are so loyal to Dumbledores. Not to mention the poetic duality of Voldemorts dark pursuit in immortality/Snake horcrux contrasting Dumbledores light companionship WITH immortality through both the Philosophers Stone & Fawkes.

    Maybe he once did, in his young and more impetuous years with Grindelwald, and later re-absorbed it through remorse, possibly after Ariana’s death; that may be why he knows the only way to undo a horcrux. After all, how can one who had never feared death be able to truly conquer it?

  • @ruairiokane4464
    @ruairiokane4464 8 месяцев назад +35

    Completely agree. Dumbledore wouldn’t ever have created a horcrux. Remember, “hallows not horcruxes”
    I don’t think he could have even used Ariana’s soul. Remorse is the only way to unite a split soul. Dumbledore was far too remorseful for his soul to have split in the first place.
    And Grindelwald was killed for the mercy of others. His soul wouldn’t have split. Intentions matter in the potter universe.
    The closest item dumbledore has to a horcrux would be his enchanted portrait. Which again is just another soulless echo of the real Dumbledore.
    Rowling is right. Dumbledore wouldn’t be Dumbledore with a split soul. And it would be quite unsettling if a person of dumbledores humanity could ever be emotionally capable of creating a horcrux in the first place.

      If i remember well it is not clear what happened exactley to D's sister. Maybe she was killed by somebody before she could couse greater damage. I can imagine, that this person could have been the victim of this cold hearted murder (if its count)
      Does the victim have to be a human? Maybe it was the pheonix, then reborned...
      Also the one who wish to make the horckrux, must commit the cold hearted murder too? I mean if D. was present at one, he just could use the materials.

      I do wonder if Dumbledore found a ritual or inadvertently activated a form of ancient magic that allowed a portion of his soul to remain with Harry at the moment of his death. Not preserve his own life but to aid and save the life of another. One more light to help banish the darkness that the piece of Tom Riddle in Harry was always trying to foster. It would explain why he was present at Kings Cross Station to talk to Harry. Such a thing would not be a tearing of the soul but rather a peaceful parting. The soul is unharmed and is simply in two places at once. One part resting and waiting in peace for the other's final duty to be finished.

      Very well said and I share your feelings/views on things. If DD had a horcrux his death by Snape's hand, to spare Malfoy's soul/life, would have meant nothing. Because DD would have popped right back into the game because you KNOW IF he had a horcrux, he also would have a plan in place to get a body as soon as possible. They made a point DD was always way ahead of Voldemort so he wouldn't have made the same mistake. On thing the books make clear is DD doesn't screw around. So yeah there is no way he made one.

    Dumbledore might not create a horcrux but he could create a similar item to resurrect himself if needed. Dumbledore would not murder anyone but I could see him sacrificing himself. We also do not know if there are ways to split the soul without damaging the soul. This might act as a protection rather then a binding. Harry Potter might have been also another of Dumbledore's "horcruxlike" objects as Harry saw only Dumbledore and thr piece of the Tom Riddle at the King's Cross and not anyone else who Harry was close to.

  • @kyleethekelt
    @kyleethekelt 8 месяцев назад +1

    I agree. I think that theories around any kind of actual dark magic Dumbledore may have performed stem from several factors. Firstly, a misunderstanding of the human condition: no human being is perfect; nor do we slot neatly into compartments where we are one thing or another, never changing, learning or evolving.
    Then there is the lack of historical understanding. Dumbledore didn't have an army behind him so he ran the Order of the Phoenix like a resistance cell, where information is given on a strictly need-to-know basis. This relies on such information being given to the right person at the right time for everyone's protection - which nearly proved disastrous when he made errors. The imperative throughout is that the war must be won because to do anything else risks an unthinkable outcome for you, your loved ones and your world.
    Finally, it seems to me that there is a significant portion of the fandom who is simply disappointed that this supposed force for good was not, himself, perfect: he was, like the rest of us, human. Sages throughout history have adjured us that the first step to wisdom is to 'know thyself'. How many of us can truly say that we're willing to confront our true selves, with all our flaws and foibles. This, Dumbledore demonstrably does throughout his life and I think that, by the time I move onto the next adventure, I shall have been able to count on one hand those I've met who have the bravery to do likewise.

Another point on how I thought Dumbledore didn’t create a horcrux, almost immediately at the start of the video was Dumbledore shows up when Harry is “killed” by Voldemort as Harry remembers him in good looking enough health for being dead… 😂 in the crossing station that was in between life and death! While 1/7 part of Voldemorts soul that was attached to Harry was completely beyond salvation! I just think if Dumbledore had made a horcrux it would of shown in someway! That’s just my take! Dumbledore absolutely had it in him to create a Horcrux. I don't know exactly how it would work with the Phoenix though, seeing as how they die and are reborn from their own ashes, and Harry witnesses this, firsthand, in the second book. While Dumbledore is completely capable of having created one (I also doubt that he actually would have), but if he ever did, I don't think it was his Phoenix. With the wand coming into his possession, he could theoretically have used that and performed the ritual in secret sometime later on

    • @charlesbrentner4611

      Ah, but the phoenix or the wand would only have been the container for the horcrux. Dumbledore doesn't strike me as the type to murder anyone. We even find out in the course of the books that Dumbledore was seeing Grindewald through rose colored glasses. He didn't see what kind of man he was but then after the fight where Ariana was killed he had his eyes opened to what he really was like. Their friendship ended that day.

      this is a bad theory bc dumbledor died and never "came back" ipso facto he had no horcrux. he had a few months as a CHILD where he had dreams of conquering muggles, not the same as creating a horcrux. after his sister died, while he was still a CHILD, dumbledor made a huge turnaround and worked for good evermore. so NO, he DIDNT "absolutely have it in him to make a horcrux." being the strongest wizard doesnt mean he was evil and it takes being evil.
      he was NEVER dark. he wanted to rule over muggles for their own good, not to remove them or out of evil intention. and even then like i said, he had a few months dreaming of things like all kids do. never meant he was evil or would ever do this. the creation of a horcrux requires the intention to remove someone. dumbledor NEVER had that in him. not even when grindelwald came around.

    I think one of the big things that makes Dumbledore a candidate for having a horcrux is that he is strictly against it in having it being taught in Hogwarts. It makes it seem like he's done it before by doing that suspicious kind of behavior. But I think it all stems from the fact that killing somebody is so heinous to Dumbledore that he would be the worst thing to ever expose anybody too.

    There is another basic reason that Fawkes couldn't be a Horcrux. A phoenix is a creature of pure light magic. A Horcrux on the other hand would seem to be a creation of pure dark magic. Dark and light can't co-exist together any more than oil and water can mix together. Either the light magic in Fawkes would eventually destroy the dark magic or the dark and light magics would have mutually destroyed one another.

    He could hold his opinions and make the decisions he makes because of past experience and knowing the seduction of dark magic’s feeding hopes but never properly producing that which is already gone but desired, etc…
    It wouldn’t shock if his younger self could’ve been in some grey area usages of spells to create creatures with unusual powers by linking their souls to objects through which being killed doesn’t work the same… maybe he moved what remained of his sister to the phoenix upon whatever went down in that unclear duel involving him, extremist dark wizard boyfriend, sister coming in and something happening which… Imagine jumping in front of a killing curse to save someone else… then having some aspect of what remains moved to a form without illness with some partial imperio stuff or something… and having them linked to flamel’s philosopher’s stone for the phoenix effects and whatever level of magical binding between life force of a few and whatever magical items… especially the items with personality which feels subtly a tad Japanese shintobuddhist kinda vibes…
    Maybe I’m overthinking different ways his character can be interpreted and whether or not Rowling wasn’t just saying “wouldn’t that be dark…” to throw off spoiler theories revealing deeper narratives for whatever went on in young dumboedore trying to save or recreate his sister’s soul or undo whatever dark magic accident which… if it’s his boyfriend maybe the guys changing after killing albus’ sister or something… but… I’m curious what went down there cause it sounds interesting if some advice and comments are knowledge from experience etc. & not clear from the books because of the context details etc yet to be told…
    I expect tragic experience where he no longer trusts dark magic and is wary of its users…
    Can’t be like that without reasons you know?
    Maybe accidental light side variation of horcrux… what’s flamel’s bleeding immortality stone right?! the hallows make it all more complex for sure with their own lore and symbolism etc. And character arcs of the brothers, etc.
    Many hog warts legends seem to have items with some such soul attachment and weird magic which then Riddle wants to put innumerable bloody curses and horcrux shenanigans in too many dark ways etc. It’s a messy power which feels still narratively malleable on some details left mysterious you know? She might not wish to elaborate on potential narratives showing dumbledore’s understanding of dark magic to save loved ones…
    I’m thinking a Sebastian Sallow kinda narrative parallel but more grand… dunno the story in the movies or books for some of them yet… but if we’re still debating it’s probably intentionally avoided to keep people wondering like details between lily snape stuff and other things readers wonder about in narratively appropriate or fantasy stuff they imagine etc.
    But it’s interesting enough to get into exploring some of the dark magic theory and use of some to achieve some unexplained mysterious magical things about the castle, etc.
    Agh they got me again dang… do excuse yeah?

    I dont really get where the "murder in cold blood" part comes from though. In the books its just stated that in order to make a Horcrux, one has to kill. "Killing" rips the soul. But i only have my facts from the books.
    I dont know where else its stating the other facts.
    But after countless of repeating on listening to the books read by stephen frye, i never meet the place where it is mentioned that the kill needed to be of cold blood.
    Now i like the idea that thinking that dumbledore made one out of the killing his sister, because yes he was noble, but also sinisterly cerious.
    That man is way more dark than many even know.
    I for one sometimes thi k that he might even be as bad as Voldemort him self.

    If he had a horcrux, he wouldn't have been able to meet Harry at Kings Cross, his soul would have been tethered

    Yeah, I agree with you. I simply don't buy the theory that Dumbledore created a Horcrux. What need would he have for one? Yes, there was a time when he and Grindelwald once dreamed of finding the Hallows and becoming the "Masters of Death", but he clearly snapped out of that once his sister was killed, turning on any and all ideas along that line. One other thing that supports this was him removing all of the books on the subject of creating a Horcrux from the Restricted Section after learning that Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort was researching into the subject. Someone who believed that such a dark practice was okay enough to the point where they'd carry it out themselves would not have done that.....Finally, Dumbledore seemed to be at......peace with his impending death after being cursed. He accepted it, carried out his final affairs by writing Harry, Ron and Hermione into his will and making arrangements with Snape to end his life early so he didn't suffer while also ensuring that Draco's soul remained undamaged and unbroken by having to do it on Voldemort's orders.......All in all, his actions and deeds basically speak of a man against that kind of magic.

    I think that Dumbledore didn't even know what a horcrux was when young & only later gained basic knowledge of it. Because of how he had to turn his back on Grindlewald & search for strong magic that could break the blood bond he had made with Grindlewald, he delved deeper into knowledge of dark arts as a way to fight them. So no, he didn't make a horcrux when planning wizard domination with Grindlewald.
    Even without the intent of a horcrux could he have been tricked into killing "for the greater good" by Grindlewald when they 1st started seeking power? Maybe, but I think not likely. When he saw the darkness in Grindlewald it shocked him into realising that Grindlewald's way was evil, not just revolutionary. Dumbledore felt he had justified reason for disliking muggles & wanting wizards in charge, which is what Grindlewald used to trick him into joining forces, but deep down he knew killing them wasn't the way, it would only prove the muggles' fear of wizards correct. He wanted to prove wizards were better than muggles, not kill muggles. He didn't want to kill other wizards either, just lead them into a world where they didn't have to hide their powers. He even understood that his father killing the 3 muggles that hurt Arianna was wrong. They deserved to be punished, but his father was wrong to take that vengeance himself & decide himself that they deserved death. He hated that muggles were the reason Arianna was brain damaged, but he still didn't have that level of hate in him. What he had was a desire to make a better world, & if need be he would help force that into being, but not by spilling blood. He wanted wizards to band together & change the world with a show of force, but not murder. By showing that they could kill muggles but choose not to then they would make muggles respect wizards.
    So no I don't think Dumbledore could kill in cold blood, only if needed to protect himself or someone he cared for. That in itself is his core character which Rowling created, & as you said she herself said of course he wouldn't do that.

    perhaps he could have killed a muggle "for the greater good" and make a horcrux because he wanted to be able to find the deadly hallows, but that would also be very out of character for him to do, as Dumbledore does not fear death, he does not have any reason to try to gain immortallity

    The piece of Voldemort inside Harry wasn’t accompanied by a ritual. The spell backfired killing Voldemort and yet Harry was still referred to as a horcrux. Does there need to be a ritual to make a horcrux if the object holding the piece of soul is an inanimate object?

    If you have to perform a ritual to create a horcrux, how is it possible to “inadvertently” make one. Voldemort would have had to perform the ritual either before or after using the killing curse on Harry, no?

  • @robertschall6548
    @robertschall6548 8 месяцев назад +1

    After Voldemort killed Harry he didn't do the ritual hence him being a accidental horcuax so maybe the rules aren't so strict Dumbledore may not have killed his sister in cold blood but maybe the fact that the spell was cast with cold blooded intent even if it didn't kill the intended target would be good enough for a accidental horcuax to be made to granted it still wouldn't be either the wand or faux. Also author says no is something there isn't really away around but if she did want to bring him back I think that this is as good as Harry being ahorcruax

      I may be completely wrong. But my understanding was that killing someone destroys part of your soul no matter what. Creating a hocrux captures that piece of soul as it’s ripped from your main soul and before it dies. So when Voldemort killed him self he’s soul that was tethered was still split. But that split piece was still tethered because of the other hocruxes so it just attached itself to Harry because Harry was the only living thing there. I don’t think I’m making sense. Not sure if EVERY time you kill it splits your soul. But idk. Yeah I’m not sure why his soul split and went to Harry. Was he trying to make a horcrux when he killed Harry?

      @@forfun6273 they never really give a good explanation why to make a horcrux it's suppose to be more then just murder and he wasn't trying to make one that's why harry is the "accidental horcrux" he was just there to kill the baby that was suppose to kill him and anyone that got in his way my point is just if circumstances can make for an accident without following proper procedure it could possibly happen again or before i guess

    Not that I entirely believe the theory, but I can easily see Dumbledore killing a Deatheater (or some other dark Witch or Wizard) in "cold blood" at some point. The Ritual being performed is where im more skeptical but even that I could see it done as a countermeasure to getting taken out themselves. More as a battle strategy than a wanting to be immortal thing. But theres also seemingly a way to do it without a ritual, otherwise Harry wouldnt be one, so it could even be that there are witches and wizards out there who have created unintentional Horcruxes.

    • @nicholasskevis8305

      It all comes down to the number of horcruxes. The documentation written before Voldemort's rise to power referes to one horcrux per wizard. Voldemort is the first one to split his soul in more than one piece. So, according to Dumbledore, his soul became so unstable after having created 6 horcruxes that when he underwent the traumatic experience of his own curse hitting him (when he tried to kill Harry), his soul was unintentionally splitted and the new piece attached itself to the only living thing in the building, Harry.

    I agree that there is no chance Dumbledore ever created a Horcrux. Not that he couldn't in terms of magical skill because in this field he absolutely could have. However even in his dark youth he never cared about living forever, it was never his objective just like Grindelwald both men welcomed death with no fear. Now I wouldn't be surprised if he killed some DE or snatchers during the days of the order, but it was a war and nothing about a murder in cold blood. Some dark wizards at their darkest never murdered directly like Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape.
