I was on an over sold flight once and they actually pointed to me and told me I was going to have to get off the plane and layover in Amsterdam! I had a friend meeting me in Barcelona and this was before everyone had cell phones. I threw a fit like the original Karen and the pilot came out of the cockpit and took me to first class and plopped my ass down in an open seat next to a poodle ! With only a few people in first class I wondered why wouldn’t have done this sooner ?

I am Gen X like you. I never went up to my kids school unless they were doing a concert when they were little or something like that. I didn’t feel it was my job to be a teachers assistant. I had a fucking job, and I was a single mother. I’m not going to volunteer at the bake sale. I will throw 20 bucks at that fund raiser instead. For the time it takes me to bake cookies for the bake sale that may or may not sell I could’ve made $100 at my job working. Here. Have some money instead. And honestly, they seem to appreciate that more. Oh, and my kids know how to cook so I would just tell my kids. “Here’s the ingredients if you wanna make cookies for the bake sale.”And they did.
I have had it with restaurants that have NO sound dimming at all so that all the noise continually bounces around the room. I will never go to one of those places, and instead I go to places where you can have a conversation and not get a headache from all the deafening noise.
How are planes even allowed to oversell? How is that not false advertising?

My baby sister went to her college orientation last week and multiple parents were trailing behind their 18 year olds rather than going to the parent "activities" or just going out to get some friggin lunch for a couple hours. I would have sooner drugged and chaired my parents in our hotel room than brought them to orientation. Worst part is I can't tell if this is caused by parents who can't let go, kids who need a security blanket, or both.
I could not wait to leave and be independent.

Core math was almost the death of me.
If I am in an emergency situation, I need my doctor to know how to save my life. I don’t need them to draw a bunch of circles and dots to figure it out. I need them to just know the math. I knew we were doomed when I took my grandson to a conference and she told us that he should not be memorizing his times tables. We had to learn those in 3rd grade.
I spent 4 hours trying to figure out what “regrouping” was. FINALLY I found a RUclips video and she said “for us old-timers, regrouping is what we called borrowing “.
I’ve had it!!! These kids can get the answer right, but if they don’t show their work the “core” way, they mark it wrong. Bastids!!!!
As a retired educator of 35 years I totally agree with you. I used to teach place value in elementary school so that students would understand regrouping and what they are actually doing when they perform that process. Once they have it they don’t need to revisit it.
Math major in college here. 2010s were the golden age for core math, I still use some of the analytical and thinking skills I learned during then. Everything now is so counterproductive, I can understand calc 6, but not whatever these kids are doing.
Airlines: I recently took 4 flights, every one of them overbooked. What happened to standby? Then you get on seats designed to pack in children under 4' tall and "snacks" of such low quality that Walmart would be embarrassed to sell. I remember when I used to enjoy flying. Im that old. Saving money? How much are they paying their CEOs? If they can't manage on a few million a year, they are poor money managers and should be fired. What do they say? Failure to plan on your part doesn't constitute (require) an emergency on my part.
My dad used to say that last line to me constantly as a kid. I use it all the time now as an adult 😂

I have Gen Z kids and this kind of stuff sends me and my husband reeling. Joining a job interview with them? What the what?! NEVER gonna happen! This stuff makes my skin crawl. I guess they all co-slept too...yikes! Our kids were raised like us except for the death toys and we had car seats and used seat belts. Yes, they had cell phones for emergencies ONLY and computers for their homework. They went outside to play and cleaned up after themselves. Not saying we were perfect parents but allowed them to become independent. Thank you all! Love you all and your show! 😘💙🗳️
When I had our kids, we didn't have car seats. I'd tell them to sit back down and buckle back and stop fight, and of course they didn't listen to me, so I'd slam on the brakes, they'd go flying, start crying, I'm laughing at them which makes them cry harder, but they do stop fighting sit back down and buckle up. We we allowed to do that back then!

I waited in the car while my kid went into a diner to apply for a job as a dishwasher. His bike had been stolen because HE didn’t lock it, so I made him work to pay for the bike. Yes, he got the job. And he’s a great guy, happily married 25 years!
Thank you for saying over parenting sends a message to the child that the parent doesn't think the child is competent. I am a grown adult and still have to deal with this with a parent. They think they're helping, but it hurts my feelings and insults me. So glad I found you; new listener but really enjoying the episodes!

His cabinet is composed of very decent humans. This was a fabulous interview. I had no idea that Ms. Jean-Pierre tutored calc 1, 2, and 3. That is QUITE an accomplishment in its own right. I was a fast food manager. Parents will drive kids to interviews and often wait inside with them. Interviews are informal so parents will sometimes get involved. Usually the kids are not excited about it.

TBH I don't mind giving up my seat on an oversold flight, just as long as I don't have to be at my destination by a certain time. It's happened to me twice on Southwest before. Both times I got a $600 voucher which paid for 2 future flights I had.
Parents also Call and say my daughter, Sailor had an interview last week and we haven't heard anything!!???

Overbooking in airlines was very common here in Europe. But fortunately, I think it's done. The same thing happens in hotels but there, they have to give a room equal or better in a hotel near your reservation.

Bill Maher was recently talking about a popular television show in Japan called “Old Enough”, where children as young as 2 years old are sent out alone to the local store to buy items for the parents. I think 2 might be way too young, but Japan has a very child-friendly and safe culture where this early responsibility is encouraged. We’d never dream of that here now, with kids being targeted by people who would harm them. Jennifer was right, we were like wild dingos growing up. My mom would kick us out in the mornings during summer, and not expect to hear back until dinner.

This whole 'customer is to blame' crap is happening everywhere. It seems like if you blink wrong in certain places, you run the risk of just being told to leave. The days of the customer being right are gone.
Depending on the industry, customers have been way too entitled and demanding and deserve to be put in their place (doesn’t apply to airlines overselling flights) but otherwise I’m glad the mentality is shifting away from “just because you’re spending money doesn’t mean you can be rude and entitled”
I don't think the anxiety of my generation comes from the parents overparenting. It comes from social media, climate change and of course the economical climate. I disagree with Jennifer. Also most of us are constantly exposed to things that previous generations were not with the help of the internet especially as teens. Not to mention going through a pandemic...

[WAY] Over 35 year old NGS (Non Gender Specific: I came up with NGS in the late 80s but it has never caught on), vegetarian for 46+ years (it's the new math), never had children. Still don't know what I want to be when I grow up...

I lost my lesbian sister to suicide 35 years ago, and when Karine spoke to the camera about the 988 number, I broke down a little. It seems to go straight over Pumps head that Jennifer, and I imagine many listeners like myself, are surprised and/or a bit appalled she is calling out people skirting the system yet unashamedly almost boasting that she helps her kids skirt the system. When Jennifer attempts to call her out on it she either plays dingy or most likely is oblivious to what Jennifer is nicely trying to point out to her. I really enjoy this podcast primarily for Jennifer's take on our political circus reality which she speaks knowledgeably with eloquence and hilarity. It often appears as if Pumps is in over her head on political topics and quite tone deaf to herself. I've always overlooked Pumps trying too hard and over-acting as I know they are great friends that began their claim to fame via Bravo together as a duo. Pumps was my favorite on their Bravo show. This time the fit just doesn't seem genuine. My opinion may be the minority, I'm truly sharing so that if I'm not the only one feeling it maybe someone close to this dynamic duo might help Pumps to be her own cute, funny and authentic self rather than a Jennifer twin. Pumps is awesome as Pumps.

Restaurants are all too LOUD. No acoustics whatsoever. Old restaurants had acoustical ceilings and carpet which absorbed the sound. Now everything is hard wood and metals. Drives me crazy.
I remember back 28 years ago on Delta. They would give you a free round trip ticket to anywhere in the continental United States if you would give up your seat. I actually volunteered a lot! I always had a book. Now, I know that not everybody's situation is that easy. But, there were a couple times where I actually arrived back faster than I would have, if I hadn't have given my seat up at all. Of course those were the days when you could still smoke on airplanes, and you got a wonderful full meal with your ticket! Oh, how I miss those days!!! 😢 Free blankets and pillows. Delta still comes up on top every year for best on time arrivals, customer service, and overall satisfaction. Just a thought.

Airlines need to stop over booking AND STOP allowing stupid parents on planes, who do not book seats together with their minor children. NO ONE is responsible for your child except you the parent . I recently flew and ended up next to a child whose stupid parents failed to book the sits together. The child was a brat who kept banging the drop down tray and the cell phone holder. He was so bored because the stupid parents did not bring anything to entertain their child, no book , coloring book, or pad to play games on. The child kept getting up and down. I hesitated saying anything to the child about not banging the tray because you just never know how a parent would react. The mother got up and decided it was a great idea to feed the child Nacho Doritos and a large sugar filled drink which just made the child more hyper. I maintained until I couldn’t take it and saw the child still next to me eating a huge bag of sugary peanut filled candy while rubbing their hands everywhere. Being deathly allergic to peanuts I got the mom’s attention asked her when she booked her flight, why didn’t she book the seats together and why in the hell she thought anyone should be responsible for her child. I then explained to her and her stupid husband that I was allergic to peanuts to a degree that can cause death and what was she thinking feeding her child peanuts on a plane. She yanked the kid up , the stewardess had to clean the area and lo and behold the stupid airline found seats together for the family! NO ONE should be asked to give up their seats when they book and pay for the seat in a timely manner, and no family should be allowed on a plane with minor children unless those minor children are sitting with their parent(s).
The only time you take a parent to a job interview: Is if you're applying for a job at a nursing home. lol
