Just found your videos. Your narration style is top notch - great combo of informative and humorous. Very entertaining. Won't be long before you have several hundred thousand subscribers. Also, enjoyed the Seinfeld reference!
Love your videos, I find them both educational and entertaining. I grew up in Olympia but currently live in Seattle. Your videos also make me homesick! I miss being down there.
I really like it and compared to other homes I see built it’s obvious true craftsman built it! I am a finish guy (small contractor) and you guys made a really nice transition from framers to finishers! I believe I competed against you in a world championship Twi-con-do match! We fought for a whole week straight back and forth finally you broke both my legs but I refused to tap? Just as the ref was going to wave the bout finished I did a double broken leg round knee kick taking out your legs ??? Then I woke up?
@@AwesomeFramers trust me I am a whimp! I drop my hammer and know it ? Still jump! (I hate that)! The videos R so great ! Can you please comment on what I am seeing as a trend now ? Framing beast , Ontario Framer? The work is to just silly? Can you do a video where you and Kyle work like crazy men nailing like your working a machine gun? Then explain the problem with that? Thanks for another great video! I continually learn a ton from your work. Can you tell me what type/size/length of nails you're using here? I'm installing WRC shingles on my house over Slicker Classic, using 16 ga, 2" staples. And it often feels like they could be hammered in more. Not sure if that's the nature of the rain screen having flex. But curious if nails pull the shingle tighter to the wall. Would love to get your take. Thanks again!
if they were larger nails maybe, but they are only 16ga so the shingle will swell and close off that hole, but the rain screen will keep it all protected.
Great series. I look forward to the next one. Just a quick question? Is there a reason u guys don’t use trusses on ur homes. I was thinking at first maybe lead times are backed up on getting them but I just thought I’d ask.
Great question. It doesn't save us any money to use trusses. Scheduling is much easier, we have open attics and we can quality control better. I had this house priced for trusses and truss materials were significantly more expensive than the framing materials to hand cut it. Factoring in labor its about a wash
@@AwesomeFramers I priced out the same thing even in the last couple months. 18" energy trusses were 3x the cost of materials for hand framing, and that's not including the blocking and bracing, crane rental, etc. For short to short-ish roof spans with simple shed or gable roof lines, I've had truss manufactures say cut rafters if you can. Especially for a shed roof, where you can get away with 2x12, or even 14" for an I-joist if you need the depth for insulation, compared to 36" for a roof truss.
🤣Lol. Sit in the honey bucket for 10 minutes every hour? Yep. That's what he said @14:15. We usually take a shade break as needed. Try a wet micro fiber towel on your head. Much better than sitting in the hot honey bucket.🤣
Have you tried the powerlite HN65 siding nailer? I'd looked at the Mac lineup before but the prices turned me away but since luck shown on me recently, I looked back into then and the weight difference is crazy! That HN95 is 5.1 lbs vs 8.3 for our latest DeWalt framer. That's a huge difference. Sorry to hijack your comments but that weight difference means a lot as I age (slightly older with smaller hands and calves). Also trying to convince my boss to go with the slicker for some cypress siding we have to replace along the entire side of a house.
I like the corner board detail-for both the lap siding and shakes. I think I will try it. So it eliminates the need for precision, and the typical swollen ends you find when siding butts to trip. Question: is there any concern for insects getting in behind the siding to nest or host college parties? Presumably, the tiny triangular gaps do not receive sealant.
goo question In our area we find that there isn't any evidence of bugs living there and causing damage. I don't know that this would be the case elsewhere. Yes the 3/8" tapering to zero don't get sealant, so this is a maintenance free corner. I've pulled corners of buildings from the 60's and it looked band new behind the corner.
Great entry point for bugs. I had a house that was done that way, Hardi on the front with corner boards overlapping. Had T1-11 on the rest of the house so I installed Hardi all the way around, cut the Hardi on the front and removed the corner boards to use 5/4 trim, full of bugs and spiders.
Thanks very much for all the work and info Tim. I really enjoy your videos, keep em coming. You guys ever think about using a drainage mat behind the lap siding as well or is it just not necessary?
Nice work. I always learn a thing or two from your videos. I know you’re just building this house but the entry way seems extremely narrow and deep for my liking. 20-30 years ago, in the Tacoma WA area, we pulled off LP siding from house after house just to replace with Hardi. All the LP was swollen, rotten etc and most of it not even 10 years old. I see more and more builders using this newer version of LP smart siding but I just can’t get the old stuff off my mind to accept this new product.
Man, I keep wanting to use smart side but that whole gapping and caulking thing seems like that would be tough to look good up close. Not saying your doing a bad job at all! Is there not a primer nail spotter?

Instead of nailing a 1 x to the ceder shingles i staple a couple peaces of flashing to the back of the 1x sticking up s few inches the you put it on the wall on your line and staple to the wall just a couple staples install next course then just tap it down staples will rip through the flashing and pull it out rinse and repeat and your not leaving a bunch of holes in siding
You do realize that LP Smart siding is not warranted by the manufacturer in the Pacific Northwest? Have you read their warranty? It also clearly states not to allow your sprinkler system to spray on the siding, hello, are you going to prevent the rain from raining on that siding? It’s garbage in the king run.
