Just a quick shout out to Arlo - he is the wise, efficient, and calm influence on this very interesting and capable construction team. I also like how the Perkins Brothers give him credit. You can tell the Perkins Brothers come from quality stock just by the way they conduct themselves in these videos and how they treat their valued employees.
Hey thanks Scott… I sure appreciate your comment! Keep Arlo in your thoughts as he is recovering from a hip replacement surgery yesterday. Everything went well but he will be out for a few weeks for sure
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers QR to Arlo. Go team Perkins.
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers Get him some a knees over toes guy subscription. Gotta keep him on the crew!
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers We will definitely pray for Arlo. He is a treasure & so classy!! 🙏💞
You are SO right, Scott!!
@5:56...yeah, I guess you couldn't whip out the Zip tape after having covered the entire system for this video. 🤣 I'm glad you guys are getting some recognition of hard and quality work with these sponsors! And finally, love the outro music!
Just before bedtime. Stay safe guys! 😊
Thanks
Thank you for posting this video, as I have a bunch of this LP Smart siding to hang today and having been inspired by your fine videos and the work you boys do. Thanks to y’all, I have a little more confidence and inspiration…
i remember while building my first house driving 35 miles on a monday morning to my day work {wall tiler} and opening the back of my van and it was empty!!! i'd taken the tools out so i could get some materials over the weekend ., and forgot to put tools back in
🇿🇦🇿🇦 I wouldn't miss these episodes for anything
Thanks Sabelo!! Made my day
"Cumulative Error" Will become obvious on both siding and roofing shingles.....and flooring. Jamie is spot on!
This old Vietnam vet could use a million!Great show as always.
Prep work , prep work , prep work !!! What clients don’t see and what sets you apart from building something that last a lifetime. Great work guys love watching !
Thanks Anthony!
Nothing better than watching the Pros on my lunch break. Saving all the tips for my dream house.
If you swap the position of each gecko for each row, then you'll cancel out any accumulative error :) If the Geckos are set slightly different from each other, rotating them for each row will ensure any difference is averaged out every two rows ;)
Interesting point awesome. I like the way you are doing, never try that. I would like to test it our. It happened few time by bad geckos settings then lots of work to bring back to level. 👏 👏
That will cancel out any mismatch between the jigs, but the rows still need to be checked against the story stick to make sure they're not both 1/32 short/long/etc.
I was just thinking “there should be a new Perkins video today” lol
Your right… try to post Thursday and Sunday!
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers make it 3 times a week 🙏
I would love to! Just run out of time most weeks :-)
Best RUclips building channel !!!👏👍👏👍
Music sounded a bit like a Van Morrison song. Great work!
Wow, I just accessed RUclips to see if you guys posted a new video! Great timing!
Nice! Thanks for watching
Yes
It is a good lunch time when a PBB video comes out & get to enjoy eating my lunch with out HOT Sauce..LOL
PBB keep up the good work!!
Here's hoping for Arlos fast but safe recovery. Good work again everyone.
Another OMAZE-ing video Perkins crew!!
Wow! I see what you did there ;)
Finally! I missed the crew!
Man I give Jaime props for trying that window frame in 1 piece. I would’ve done the same. I install cabinetry and preassemble my crown moulding in a larger section then put it up in one unit. With the help of a few guys to lift it of course!
Thanks Peter… I’ll make sure he sees this comment👍
Great stuff! More people should watch this channel!
That is some super fast siding!
That siding is nice
You all are Great but Arlo is Priceless !! Blessings 👏
Thanks Salvador… Arlo is a really good dude! He actually just had a hip replacement surgery yesterday so he will be out for a couple weeks on account of that.
Little pro tip for the Gecko gauges. Set your first or second line of siding up and use the bottom edge of that line as a reference with your tape measure to prevent accumulative error.
We definitely need to get some blooper reels after vids moving forward 😝
After watching all your videos, RayJay Builder buddies, and some other construction youtubers, you guys are the only people I would want to build my custom home now. Too bad I am no where near you all! I am stuck now rewatching all your builds haha. Cannot wait for the next video. No matter what it is.
Damn Jamie! I thought a pro like you would’ve made a story pole. Also, those gecko clamps are cool, we used to make them out of 1x in the shape of a T, flip it upside down, the cross of the T sits proud of the very and toward the house abutting the bottom lip of precious course and the very cut at the exact reveal we want. Make 2, leave the verts long, then cut both beets to length (6.5”) at same time on mitre saw.
snap a chalk line every 4 or 5 rows ahead of time to check for alignment on the siding and you won't have to worry about cumulative error and you can keep moving ahead.
Great video as always guys. Really enjoyed the playful banter and hey Jaime don't be so hard on yourself, you did an amazing job and you're still human! 😊
Looks good, guys.
If you're worried about cumulative error, strike a chalk line across just under your windows AND just over them representing the tops of your planks. Refer to them half way up each section.
Essential Craftsman uploads a video on interior trim and Perkins upload a video on exterior trim on the same day, I can’t keep up! Btw, DeWalt makes a cordless roofing nailer - I’ve seen people use it for siding but it probably isn’t as good as a true siding nailer. I’m sure Milwaukee already has one in development!
Good info… thanks! I am pretty much done with air hoses at this point :-)
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers Air hoses and extension cords both… if I have the option to not be tangled up, I will choose that any day.
You guys need to come down to Texas and teach some of these builders how to incorporate the quality into their builds that seems to be the foundation of all your projects. It's nice to see people take the time to do things right, for once. Love the videos, and I've learned a lot from them. Keep 'em coming!
Looks like somebody is trying to hijack your channel by getting me to connect with them on WhatsApp using a name that is similar to yours.
Youns are going high tech over there in Swain with those gauges 😎 Over here on Poor Man Ave....As the cutt-man, I usually hit that 1 3/4 scribe notch on the ole speed square with a periodic line about 4 in long every 20 in or so 😉 Leaves a 6 in reveal on LP, Gives you a quick underneath visual and plenty of nailing room . And I was taught as a corner board marker 😂 Oh yeah, I'll throw a level on it about every 8 courses to make sure we're on the straight and narrow 👌 Y'all got it going on 😎 I spent a many a night rolling trim for the job....Nice metal work 💪
This channel is just awesome and inspiring. As a builder myself, it just makes me want to be better at my craft
Hey thanks! We are all learning to build better as we go
Told you the gecko Guage is such a time saver abc sends a couple sets to us with a large siding order. House is looking great!
Thanks… We have really enjoyed using them! I actually bought a second set of them after using them on the first day of siding. Just FYI for anyone reading this… They make the Gecko clamps specifically for 3/8” thick siding and 5/16” siding
That siding looks great!
Those Gecko clamps are a must have!! If you’re worried about cumulative error with one of your clamps being off just color code your clamps and switch them back and forth after each piece, I spray painted mine red and blue.
We use aluminum but use a flashing tape between the ac2 and aluminum
Thanks!
You guys are a well oiled machine, even with the window trim slip. I really enjoy the work you all do. Thanks for sharing.
Great to see you using Hoff's Sauces! Good home grown Chattanooga Hot Sauce!
Yeah the gecko gages are great and the new air compressors too. Lowes has the best price in quiet compressors fir some reason.
Would love to see you guys have a 26' box truck with most all your tools- huge huge time savings.
Just so you guys know, Omaze only donates 15% of what they make off the raffles. Love the vids, keep it up.
It is closer to 1% after the company they use takes a cut. Also not a single known winner for any of their pay to win scams...
Jamie the punctillous person and a great rogue. But he finding every day a better possibility of working. I gladd my every day the Perkins team to see on the next video. Greeting,, 🇦🇹
A bunch of real cool guys .and no what there at. I wud,n miss there videos.....the cool crew....ps Jamie is the man ..xx
I haven't used any of the siding tools but have looked at a few of these clamps. I don't think I would use them without a story pole to check though. The other issue that I have had with them is I like to be able to run a full board above the flashing over windows and doors if possible by making small variations on the story pole in siding spacing. I think it looks better, but these clamps definitely gave the advantage of speed.
Jaime, this is when the "measure twice - cut once" applies!
I see you sealing the end cuts on the window trim. Great small detail to prevent the customer from having issues years down the road.
Y’all are the best
Why not nail to the studs with ur siding? Why do u just nail to the sheathing?
7:18 Welcome to Jamie's TED Talk
I pocket screw my exterior casing similar to the Jamie did it here. Works great!
I agree with Jamie on the cumulative error thing. I snap lines and use the gecko to hold the board.
The built in lapped butt joint is pretty dope.
Job looks great. I always get a kick out of watching you guys. Always best to have fun on the job.
Two things I could offer you guys on the job. One, you need a weep strip behind that kicker so the water that gets behind it (or condensation) can run out the bottom. Second one is for Jaime. Take a hot glue gun and some thin fur strips and create a pattern around the multiple windows when you try it again. The same way you make a pattern for granite countertop. Bring it back to the shop with you and match it with your measurements. Keep up the good work.
I knew that killed Jaime to not have that window frame fit! I asked him about it and he said he started working on it at about 445 on a Friday and just tried to whip it out really fast before the weekend… Enough said ;)
Eric, need to do a house tour of the new house!
Arlo! He’s the man, the myth, the legend! I’d love to send a get well card to him. Jamie has to have a stomach of steel, man that hot sauce has to set him a fire 🔥 Good crew, enjoy watching as always👍🏻
lol, i thought the same thing then couldn't resist a chuckle when i heard him talking about dealing with "brown outs" after.
Lmao! James and his glamor shots. It's like a cherry on top of a sundae 🍨 not really!! I enjoy watching your videos guys. Keep up the good work and having fun.
Thanks Mikkel! Good times as always
Perfect timing as always 👌, Thanks for the great entertainment team!
I agree thats why I snap a line every 3’ too keep on track
Looking good!
Awe man can't believe you messed up that prefabricated window trim Jamie LOL. Good job guys looks great
Quick question from the UK. Do you find that homes get burglarised due to the way the windows are installed? ie all a burglar needs to do is pull the siding off then pry the windows out... obviously a home owner, if inside, would hear all this but if it was only a vacation home or they were on vacation it's easy access for a burglar with a moving van.!!
Love the LP Smart Siding. I'll have to check SF $, and if its "reasonable" will try and push the product. Thanks again for sharing your build!
Great progress!
You guys have taught me so much by watching your videos! I am about to start building my own house and some of the tips and tricks you guys use I know will help me later down the rode!

I like the new siding.
Loving the progress, style, and always the comedy. Keep up the good work Perkins and crew.
good job boys enjoy y'all video
Do you still paint the cut edges on your siding ?
Same on the prefinished… after my first time using it I try to use it on every house
You boys do any work out near Dillsboro/ Sylva?
edit: hit the wrong button before I was done...I ask b/c my old man has retired, is from there and is interested in putting up a place on the family property.
How great would it be if Perkins Bros had a contest and the winner would get to work with them for a week?
Sweet! New guy shenanigans
Good call on the silica dust. California proposition 65. We are doing it again.
Yep! just FYI for anyone else reading this… silica dust comes from cutting pretty much any kind of masonry and the particles are so small that once they get in your lungs, they can’t ever come out. This can cause major respiratory problems as you can imagine. Also the reason we use water when running a street saw in concrete and the reason it’s a really bad idea to cut fiber cement siding with a grinder or masonry blade on a circular saw.
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers That is correct. Crystalline silica is very small and lodges deeply into lung tissue, like that other stuff that starts with the letter A. The letter A stuff is shaped like a corkscrew and behaves as a corkscrew. The immune system sets up a response to remove the foreign matter, but it cannot and so attacks the tissue surrounding it, which has been linked to cancer. Crystalline silica is similarly attacked by the immune system, but it has a different weapon. When the crystals are cracked open, the bonding of its electrons weaken and they are released into the tissue. Their energy profile is not nearly as high a 'beta' particle, but free electrons inside your lungs has got to be a very bad thing.
Amorphous silica, like you add to epoxy or concrete, is a larger particle and is not as likely to get lodged in lung tissue, but it does cause silicosis. Crystalline silica is used in many products where you would not expect it. The company I worked for was building a very large architectural component and the clear poly paint had it in it and it got sanded a lot. Many car polishes also use the silica as the buffing agent. As the safety manager I worked really hard to keep my guys safe. Stay Safe, Mask Up.
If you are really concerned about a cumulative error over long surfaces, simply mark the two clamps and keep rotating their position for each row. For example, second row clamp 1 was on the left and clamp 2 was on the right, so row 3 use clamp 1 on the right and clamp 2 on the left, and so on...
So everything actually worked out pretty well the clamps. Jaime just worries ;)
Any problem with the Gecko Gauges scratching the finish?
Good question… not with this siding, but it is a baked on finish (looks like a satin sheen). I’ll bet they would scuff the paint if it was a flat finish
I don't see any metal gussets, braces or thru-bolting that fastens the decking to the house ! Same with the overhang ?
Mark your reveal by running a pencil line along the siding piece using speed square notch. When you get good at it, it only takes a few seconds/pc. Then you just set the row your installing right on the line on the row below it. Fastest way I've seen.
LP smart siding has a very large amounts of lawsuits against it!! I have used it!!
Man , ya even show lunch time, lol. It made it more realistic. I miss doin watcha doin.
We’ve been using pre finished from Colortones in Asheville for like 20 years. Well worth it. Still need to do touch up but a factory finish is waaay better than site finished
If it isnt mandatory to use house wraping if you use the zip boards what prevents the water from going behind the flashing?
Does not the continuous starter (aka the kicker) defeat the purpose of the HydroGap drainable housewrap? Because now any water that does get past the siding and runs down the wrap is going to collect at the kicker and eventually rot out the bottom row of siding.
It shouldn’t since it is applied over the hydrogap just like a row of siding.
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers Good point.
I own the gecko siding tool .i believe the more accurate way is a story pole and mark ur trim.if u don’t the geckos will run differently across ur wall..I also use hardy siding quit often so I normally mark out my studs and draw plumb lines to nail siding on.not sure why this siding would be different.great video guys keep up the good work
Love your work
Yay new ep
Quick question, Why do you put up your window trim before you put on siding? Here in sweden we put the window in then we start with the siding, and then we put the trim on the siding and window that way we don't have to be as precise on our siding cuts because the ends won't be seen and we don't have to caulk the ends.
We also do this with our corner trims.
They do the same in Norway and personally I hate it. It looks cheap and unfinished in my opinion.
And as they mentioned in the video, if the siding covers the window flanges, you can't easily replace the window. But Scandinavia only has the older style of window without flanges, so that's not a problem for us per se.
I actually saw a video on Scott Brown carpentry in New Zealand as well. I guess the main reason is so that we can have a drip cap behind the siding that runs out over top of the window trim. Do you deal with the gaps between the back of the trim in the lap siding somehow?
they put the trim up first and cut the siding to it, so if you ever have to replace the window, you don't have to remove the siding to do it. All you have to remove is the trim.
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers No, we just leave it. But we don't really use the siding you are installing in the video. We often use tongue and groove siding so we don't get gaps large enough to be a concern.
@@MAGAMAN but we don't have to remove any siding either, we just remove the trim because our windows are only fastened to the framing with screws and the trim.
Jamie, that sinking feeling on the large window trim...it was tangible! I know it only too well! Fortunately, these days I can let it go pretty quick and just fix it! Fastly! Fastish?
Looks good guys. So up here in Canada where I’m at it’s pretty standard to use vinyl or steel siding and custom aluminum trims. Why don’t you guys? Happy building and God bless
Hope I didn’t miss a reason why. But why are you using a house wrap with zip sheathing? Thanks
Great video!!
Love your videos, keep them coming..
Jaime don’t worry, I was on your team too with the challenge!
@7:50 why did you put vapor barrier paper on top of zip board? That's the purpose of zip board.
Question for Jamie - What are some good and beginner level construction books?
I’ll let Jaime answer that one… He usually goes to the comments
I would be interested to know Jamie's opinion on "purposeful" cumulative error (like when installing cedar shingle siding as an example). In other words, there are videos that describe producing a storyboard and purposefully making the height of the cedar shingle reveal ever so slightly greater or lower over the course of each row in order to make the rows match with the bottom and top of windows and doors (for more aesthetic and pleasing appeal instead of having uneven short reveals of your siding to fill that gap). I hope that question makes sense.
Love you guys work, but I have to agree with Jaime on cumulative error I usually pop a control line in a couple different elevations for a reference, but it depends on the installer as to how good it comes out
If I'm doing it I always aim for perfect and if it's off a little maybe you can live with it
It would probably make more sense to notch the vertical leg of the flashing instead of cutting into the joists. It’s not helpful to direct water there anyway. Thanks for the great videos.
I'm curious about Jamie's left hand.
Shop accident with a jointer… there are some videos on our channel about it
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers you guys are amazing. 👍👍💪
