I love great neighbors. To be able to hammer, into the night, and not have a neighbor complain, is awesome. Always aim to build great relationships with your neighbors. Especially as a wood worker.
You don't need that much slope on the gutter. Maybe 1/4 inch over that span is lots. It would look nicer if it wasn't hanging down past the facia board. Nice shingle work I have some cedar in my garage that I didn't know what to do with. Maybe I will turn it into shingles and try something like this on my shed.
Just found the series on your channel. I just want you to know that it was extremely helpful, I learned a lot from the series, and I very much like your design. Your creativity is refreshing, your work ethic on investing so much in a “small project“ is inspirational.
Great job, Michael. At my age I won't be doing too much of this type of thing but the diamond pattern installation was fascinating. Take care and enjoy. Bill
This is rustic, functional, and just plain cool! Mad props for how this came out. I bet we could all use a tool shed/storage piece that looked this good. Great job!
I'll be honest I ended up on your channel because I watch Wyrmlife and saw the episode the other day where they came out to talk to you about some collaboration. I watch a ton if woodwork channels and love out of the box projects. So, the plywood patterns thy showed in clips where very impressive and interesting. So, here I am looking around. And this shed build was solid, but became very interesting when you hit this part and I saw the shingle design on on the back. I would have never thought of dropping a pattern in the middle of a layout. But that is so freaking cool! Very nice project. I've been wanting a new shed but they all look the same......square and boring. But this is nice and the trash covered mini car port..lol. I love the idea and look.
Exterior trim screws are your friend for the shingles that require exposed fastening. It helps to avoid discoloration from weather exposure to the nails and the screws also come in colors that will blend in to either stained or weathered shingles.
A helpful and time saving tip I was given my first cedar roof was using a ledger board for the longer runs and the rigid palm nailer makes nailing so much faster. Looks great and your shakes are nice and level Cedar always makes the building look better
He is a perfectionist, we see it with his furniture and trays and bowls and anything he builds and then he carried that artistry and attention to detail into this build. He is the man I would hire for any wood work
As someone who has watched a lot of This Old House, I can say that cedar shingles are indeed a labor of love. 😂 The Victorians did so many amazing shingle patterns, you could go nuts playing with designs. This shed is so beautiful, I hope your neighbors appreciate it!
there's also a punch like the air nailer that you strike with a hammer. I use mine to back nails out. It does a good job of keeping them straight. Great build, great series, loving the channel. I wish I'd had this example when I built my shed last year. I'm from Seattle and live in the midwest now. The background and b roll makes me homesick.
I have loved every bit of this build. I wish I had a place to build one similar but alas a my condo... No. I wish this would work at my mom's but she just doesn't have the right spot for it. Maybe I'll think of something. Awesome job Michael!
Beautiful job! Shingle shed corners very nice w/ custom cuts. Better looking than putting a wood vertical L-corner end cap that the shingles butt into. Surprised you didn’t buy a craftsman style wood door. An acetylated wood door wouldn’t rot, but cd be pricey - unless you build it yourself. Thanks for sharing the process.
There is such a thing as a manual nail pusher. I have the ‘Great Neck Brad and Nail Driver’ I found and it works great. It’s a tube with a handle and it’s partially spring loaded. Just drop the nail in and push hard to slide the nail in. Bit awkward on the ladder and under the eve but doable. Your nail heads are pretty big too. Maybe too small to work.
Thank fors sharing your inspiring projects ! Not I want to put cedar shingles with diamond pattern everywhere ^^ Impatient to see your next project ! 🌱
When you're nailing close to the edge flip the nail over on a hard surface and hit the pointed end with a hammer. It'll be less likely to split the shingle because it'll be smashing its way through, rather than splitting its way through.
Another quick tip: We would clip the head off of a siding nail and chuck it in the drill to use for pre drilling where it was required. Cheap, easy, and perfect size hole.
This series was so much fun. Watching your craftsmanship apply to construction and the art form that resulted was inspiring. It feels like these days construction still has craftsmanship but applied in efficiency and standardization rather than the artesian construction techniques of the past. Both are beautiful in their own way but love to see this all come together with your style all over it!
Michael. That's an excellent job 👏 very relaxing to see you doing this. Imo you could set the gutter perfectly level as, as water will not set either. This will make your front lines look slick 👌.
I loved the shed idea and it's build (fun to learn and watch). Hoped you used stainless nails. Also shouldn't you have left a little gap in Cedar Shakes for expansion when wet? That Diamond Shake was really nice!
That turned out beautifully. Well done, as usual. I wonder if a nail gun with the pressure turned down really low would've worked. Sometimes it's just fun to nail them by hand.
Michael, there is some much good content in this video, thanks so much. But I do have a question. You're installing shingles on the walls, which I believe are 3/4" ply/osb. What size of nails are you using so that the nail points are not exposed on the inside of the shed? Really loved this series on the shed build. And I agree .. doing shingles is super fun, very satisfying, and meditative.Oh, and the diamond looks awesome!
So inspiring! Beautiful as with all your projects 💕 A few months ago I was researching cedar shakes as a more or less decorative facing on one side if my guest cabin. I gave up in frustration because nowhere did they reveal the price of the shingles without forcing me to register on a site and request a quote. We all know that leads to endless high pressure sales calls and overflowing spam folders. 🤣 Now miraculously someone I subscribe to has a beautiful project very much like I want to do! So…how much did the shakes cost and where did you source them?…please? I am also in the PNW 🌲🌲
The interest level and complication of the plans kind of killed the project unfortunately. If you send an email to info@almfab.com I can send you what I have.
Michael exemplifies the "how you do anything is how you do everything" ethos. Taking such care building a garbage/tool shed. Wow. Color me impressed.
“Dedicated to the craft”
I love how the pattern came out on the singles. Great build brother.
Thanks Bart ♥️
this might be a long stretch but it gives me the vibe of a modern alp house design....just needs some mountains and cows in the background! love it!
I can see that!! Thanks Karoline 🏔🐄
@@MichaelAlm Michael Alp!

a waste of time , for a shed ,looks great to post thought
That pattern looks AMAZING! Killer job, Michael!
Thanks Eric!!
Fabulous craftsmanship, as ever. Hoping you have more shingle projects planned - those diamonds make that wall pop so much!
Your patience with the shingles really paid off, really nice work!
Thank you!
Great job! The diamonds are an incredible detail.
So inspiring Michael! Your curiosity and skill are a huge motivation for me to quit my meaningless job and get back to wood work! Soon I hope!
I have learned lot from this project as a beginner woodworker. The diamond shape is awesome 🤗
Great to hear! Thank you 🙌

Looks amazing, great classic feel.. such a contrast to the more industrial buildings behind. Great job as usual Michael.
Thanks Adrian!
Exterior trim screws are your friend for the shingles that require exposed fastening. It helps to avoid discoloration from weather exposure to the nails and the screws also come in colors that will blend in to either stained or weathered shingles.
That turned out GREAT! Love the way you incorporated a bit of your signature patterned look onto it. Truly exceptional!
A helpful and time saving tip I was given my first cedar roof was using a ledger board for the longer runs and the rigid palm nailer makes nailing so much faster.
Looks great and your shakes are nice and level
Cedar always makes the building look better
Good to know!!
Thank you!! I agree
Woah, I've been seeing this diamond shingle pattern frequently on old buildings here in Germany, and I always wondered how it is done! Beautiful!
Your trash bins are very lucky! The whole build looks terrific. Thanks for sharing.
I very much enjoyed this three-part project. You are a skilled and ingenious man, Michael.
He is a perfectionist, we see it with his furniture and trays and bowls and anything he builds and then he carried that artistry and attention to detail into this build. He is the man I would hire for any wood work
Beautifully done! Absolutely love the diamond pattern.
That looks absolutely beautiful. Great craftmanship. It was worth the time you invested learning and perfecting.
I love how this building has turned out!
Good on you man .Looks like you followed best practice. I went down the rabbit hole of actually making the shingles. Cheers from Montana
Phenomenal job Michael. Probably the most beautiful garden shed I've seen.
So good!! I love that pattern. Subtle but it adds so much to the whole look
Great video
Loved the outcome bro
Keep building awesomeness 🎉👍
J’adore. quel travail 👍 merci à vous !

Loved the music towards the end. Reminds me of the music from the movie "Drive."
That's one hell of a shed! Looks amazing, Bravo sir.
That diamond pattern is absolutely stunning. Great work...
Thank you!!
Great project, Michael. And this idea with diamond pattern.
I have loved every bit of this build. I wish I had a place to build one similar but alas a my condo... No. I wish this would work at my mom's but she just doesn't have the right spot for it. Maybe I'll think of something.
Awesome job Michael!

The pattern is beautiful! Really sets the build apart.
That’s one fancy container home! 👌🏻
Fantastic job. Well done and thanks!
You're really proud, that's the most exciting thing!
That’s awesome. I love how even on something like a shed you can make it interesting
Thank you!
Wow that is a beautiful shed
I love it! Now I wish you had made a diamond pattern in the fence board around the recycle bins area.
Amazing job ! The diamond pattern came out great !! Truly an inspiration. Thank you sir ;)
Wow love how the pattern turned out! Super fun project to follow!
I love it! The diamond shapes added a nice touch to it! Cheers, Josef
Thanks Josef!!
Just bought a 1940’s house with cedar shake. Thanks for the inspiration!
Awesome work Michael, thanks for sharing!

Those shingles look awesome, love the pattern you made!
Thank fors sharing your inspiring projects ! Not I want to put cedar shingles with diamond pattern everywhere ^^
Impatient to see your next project ! 🌱
Just looks gorgeous
Incredible! That is a project to be proud of for sure! You should make that diamond pattern on one of your shop walls, that would really stand out.
That turned out really great!!

Michael.
That's an excellent job 👏 very relaxing to see you doing this.

Thank you! And yeah I was thinking about doing that, because it does look a bit off.
Tom Silva and Norm Abram would be proud as they say the Money is in the Corners!!
Amazing job, totally love how it turned out!
This is awesome Michael. Way to crank it out.
Thanks Ryan!
Very nice work but now my wife want’s one 🤣👍🏼❤️🇨🇦

Leave it to you to make a garden shed look so badass!!!!
Hahaha! Thanks Gregory 🙌
Great shed
Wow! Fantastic!

Looks awesome.
Beautiful!!!
If you grew up watching This Old House you would know everything anyone will ever need to know about putting up shingles.
There’s no arguing whether or not that gutter is angled towards the downspout lol.
Great build overall!
Ha I have installed gutters for over 30 years and never seen this a gutter chain . I'm going to see if I can use on my new porch.
amazing work!!!
That turned out beautifully. Well done, as usual. I wonder if a nail gun with the pressure turned down really low would've worked. Sometimes it's just fun to nail them by hand.
really nice job.
Great job!!!

Ya did good Michael!

Hi Michael,
Love this! What happened to the plans? Do I have to work it all now by myself? 🤣🤣🤣
The interest level and complication of the plans kind of killed the project unfortunately. If you send an email to info@almfab.com I can send you what I have.
this was an awesome video
