I saw this once on Top Of The Pops about forty years ago as a small child and thought they were singing "lobotomy". So I had been looking for a song called "lobotomy" since then! It's only because I was listening to Absolute 80's on the radio at 4am this morning I finally found out what's it called.
These guys were great live and extremely kind when I met them as a teen. Their tour manager gave me the shirt off his back, what a guy. The 80's were a great time to see bands and it was easy to meet them and every single one I met was very kind and friendly. Hope it's the same for kids today.
Reminds me of the Globetrotters S.C ,in the early 80s 😅😅😅😅 the style and a few of them had army green trousers with beer mats stitched on them, ahhhh memories!!!!!
Saw these guys supporting Madness in Glasgow Apollo the same week this single entered the charts. Watched them on John Craven’s Newsround just as I was leaving for the concert, no idea that I’d be seeing them a few hours later.
Me too.i saw them in sailsbury support for madness..and the video is the pie and mash shop in Chapel Street Market London been there with my dad a few times.my dad used to go there lots when he was growing up
This song reminds me of the olden Olympic Games when combat was first introduced like before our time boxing is the first ancient sport that began during the ancient tines when people would fight on the streets, It’s one of the oldest sports. As time went on other combat sports were introduced. Like kickboxing, wrestling, judo, karate and other sports.
i still love this song,..i remeber doing the stomping dace at all the parties and weddings!!! it takes me back to the worrieless eighties as a teen xxx
Got a detention in school for inciting half the class to re-enact the cafe scene during R.E. with a substitute teacher. No school uniform, us lads had our Harrington jackets and Doc Marten's boots. Perfect for stomping this beat!
@@dennisbella7983 There was Top Of The Pops once a week, various other shows showed music videos, like saturday morning shows. I am not sure I ever heard the end of this song!!!! I think it got to number 3 in the UK charts. But the challenge in the teenage discos was to get the record to jump by stamping on the floor when the lyrics went do the boxer beat....stamp..stamp.. The record never got to the end... I just remember it sounding eehhheiri ...pop,,, ehr and then it the DJ would probable scramble around for a Thompson Twins or Howard Jones record. 80s were a magic time for being a teenager in the 80s,
@SuperSimonuk The Boxer boys used to run a second hand clothes stall to make ends meet while performing on the side and hail Dexys as a major influence on their music and image. My Grandad used to wear working boots, tank tops, braces and a flat cap. His street urchin look was inspired by the mines, Vivienne Westwood couldn't take much credit. Sometimes designers take a look out of the window just like everyone else and create something more flamboyant.
Loved these guys and I never knew the lead singer was American till a few minutes ago when I looked up the band on Wikipedia. I thought of them as being as thoroughly English as you can get.
I parked that brand new Red G-wagen (Godfrey Davies hire car) outside the eel bar on Chapel Market and the 3 little kids holding the piano scarf are my brothers!! Bless
No mate it is the Cookes Pie and Mash shop that used to be in Dalston on Kingsland High Street, it closed down years ago. I remember when they filmed the video as they caused quite a lot of intrest from the shoppers in the sainsburys that was lust along from the pie and mash shop, two of which was me and me mum back then 25 years ago.
I first remember seeing this on Saturday morning superstore & remember going down to Woolworths in Southampton city centre & buying a copy of how times have changed still a cool song though even after all these years the 80s were amazing & I consider myself lucky to have been a teenager then
@terrortorn you should check out the buffalo collection by westwood, most of what we called street fashion back then was derivative of westwoods collections.
Wow, I was 5 when this came out, I think it was on a compilation album of some sort or something and I can remember dancing maniacally to it in the living room all the time! Also good ole Shakin' Stevens lol.
I too proudly sported my white laces..... and stood proudly with the Bredren in Mcr in the 80s. Reno in Moss Side, once they knew they knew,,,,, and Thanks.
@terrortorn There were a lot of designers at that started out that way, westwood if you look at what she did it was a template for a lot of other designers, and the market thing was popular, especially in the eighties in camden, people like wayne hemmingway started red or dead on a market stall

c6green. I had the single on square 7" picture disc and the sleeve matched the record. I sold mine at a record fare and got £750:00 for it. I've still got a copy of the black round 7" version though.
when i was about 7 this seemed like the coolest thing ever - i was convinced they would become one of the biggest groups ever - and then they were 1 hit wonders
The Jo Boxers initially at least packed the most "Powerful of musical punches" but sadly the band's initial success proved to relatively short lived and subsequently the "towel was then thrown in""!!!

I've just seen this band for the second time - in 39 years ! Smart pop music with a punch, plus touches of jazz and rockabilly. A lot of fun.

I say it often but this time I mean it: "Blimey. I haven't heard this in over 40 years."
