- Sranan-also known as Sranan Tongo, Surinaams, and Surinamés-is spoken by as many as 500,000 people, primarily in the South American nation of Suriname, where it serves as a lingua franca for the country's linguistically diverse population, and by the Suranimese diaspora abroad. An English-based Creole, Sranan is distantly related to languages such as Jamaican Patois, Gullah, Seminole Creole, and Bislama, however its vocabulary derives heavily from Dutch and Portuguese, as well as a variety of Central and West African languages. Wow, this must be the most highly diverged English creole ever... I'd never bet that this language is an English-based creole. It sounds very unique, only vaguely Germanic, but not specifically English.
You should hear Saramaccan, it's one of several Maroon creoles spoken by communities in the Suriname interior that are even more divergent than Sranan, but stands out in particular in that over a third of its basic vocabulary is derived from Portuguese, while its entire phonology is completely reshaped in the cast of African languages, to the extent that it can be called a full tonal language!

See the if. We do use dutch but thats because mostly all of the population speaks dutch/sranan. We just put dutch for some words we dont really know how to say or pronounce it in sranan. But i do agree with u it should be more a dutch based

Als Surinaamse ben ik enorm onder de indruk. Jij gebruikt woorden in het Sranan die vele Surinamers niet kennen. Geweldig hoor, Hans.

Ik ben opgegroeid in Nederland. Ik dacht altijd dat ik Sranan min of meer kon verstaan maar echt proper Sranan is toch lastiger. Het Sranan wat mijn familie hier spreekt is erg vernederlandst.
What a cool language! It doesn't sound at all like English or Dutch or whatever. This is really a unique language I think it fits perfectly with the culture and people of Suriname. Really nice to see these new and unique creole languages still being used

Hi. :) I pretty sure this'll make me look more than a little daft but does it mean 'potato country'?
Gareth MacColl it literally does? But since white dutch people are dubbed 'ptatas' (silent p) it translates to white mans land, or simply a funny way to refer to the Netherlands. I think it stems from dutch people eating so much potatoes? Since Surinamese peoples experience with white people is mostly Dutch people Im pretty sure Ptata would only refer to Dutch white people, but I think that differs from family to family. Within my family Ive never heard anyone use ptata to refer to a white american for example.

It's based on english, portugese loan words (which are also there in african languages like Krio, and in other english creole languages like jamaican patois), but when spoken often mixed with dutch words.

Sranan tongo is a mixure of dutch english spanish portuguese and some other african language.
As a Surinamese person, I would've loved to see a native Surinamese speaker here. Good job nonetheless.

Hello everyone! I am from Bolivia, which is hosting UNASUR Games 2018. And my Hotel is in charge of the hospitality management of the athletes coming from all the member countries to the event. I can speak spanish, english, portuguese, some french and some mandarin chinese. But Dutch and Sranan Tongo is out of my understanding. Can somebody teel me if I will be able to handle the Suriname team?

The popular wonderment substantially suggests that this Creole is English based.... I'm, however, convinced that it fits the larger linguistic stock of Dutch.....with a bit lesser degree of Portuguese and maybe French I surmise...sort of similar to the parlance spoken on the island of Curacao.

This sounds much more like Afrikaans than English to me. I couldn't manage to follow it, but I kept hearing words that sounded like Afrikaans, and barely heard any that sounded like English
I like how you can get some things reading the text, but some of the spoken words jump out as English, with a strong regional accent. Then, when you go back and see how it was written, you realize you'd never guess from the printed page, but it really is as described -- a variant of English with plenty of Mediterranean and African influence. Nice find.

I speak English, French, and some German and I can understand maybe 30% of what he said, and if he hadn't been throwing out a bunch of technology-related vocabulary and place names, I would probably only manage about 10%.

Het lijkt erop dat hij zelf mix Surinaams is en uit dien hoofde reeds de taal kent. Niet zo een kunstje hoor. Gewoon eerlijk zijn meneer. Misschien een Surinaamse of half-Surinaamse moeder . Ik haal zi de klanken eruit die je niet uit een woordenboek haalt.

@@stanko-2798 Haha, hij is niet Surinaams. Zijn moeder is een Peruaanse inheemse en zijn pa is Hollands. Hij is mijn mattie en ik heb die video geschoten onder mijn balkon hier in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Hij valt als een blok voor donkere Surinaamse vrouwen en heeft veel moeite gedaan om die taal te masteren, en dat is hem zeker goed gelukt en die commentaren dat hij half-Surinaams zou zijn, zijn inderdaad grote complimenten voor hem :D

Hij is niet Surinaams maar half-Peruaans. Die video heb ik hier gedaan in mijn straat in Nieuw-West. Edit to say, I'm not one of those people who says that every language sounds good. It irritates me how you always get people saying "Ooh, so beautiful!" automatically for every language. "Ooh, Irish, sooo beautiful", um, no it isn't, sorry, BS alert. Of course I appreciate that to a certain extent beauty is in the ear of the hearer with languages. But, reality check, not all languages are particularly beautiful.
He actually said: Mi ben lesi. "Lesi" means to read in Sranan which is derived from Dutch "Lezen" (To read)
