17:40 Mangs' Barbaric Brain allows him to add from -39% up to +89% luck on his IQ roll. Needless to say that this is why Mangs earned a solid spot in Tier 4 on the Live League.
Basic analysis: DR went with a 50-50 strat of having 50% of his forces at the NW side and 50% in the SE side, but didn't attack on the NW side, likely fearing at least 50% of rip's funds would be up there. Rip instead did a 20-80 strat with 20% defending his HQ, especially after realizing no attack on NW side likely meant weak or artillery forces up there, and committed 80% to the SE, which he baited DR into getting within movement range of his 80% and pounced on DR. It was GG from there. Had DR had 2 tanks and an AA up north and threatened Rip's HQ, the force in the center would stick around the center/move north and there would have been a more even fight in the south.
Sacrificing a pawn is relatively common in the highest levels of chess. It's done for a multitude of reasons. Freeing up board space, weakening your opponent's position, tempo, focusing a specific area in the board, etc. Notable examples would be AlphaZero, Alireza Firouzj, and Magnus Carlsen (he's not exactly known for it, but when he does do it, usually a big highlight). It is still a risk, of course, but as with anything, its push and pull. At that level of play, every weakness is also an advantage, and vice versa. It's a calculated sacrifice. A good parallel, specific to this game, might be realizing that while Rip might be behind a tank, the value of that one tank diminishes with every turn that goes by, and if his opponent doesn't capitalize on the immediate value, then, effectively, Rip gets away with the sacrifice of army strength and earns an infantry tempo advantage.
you learn to sac pieces pretty early when learning chess. Magnus carlesn isn't known for it since in super high level, tactics are basically useless, you have to win with material advantage meaning turning one pawn into a queen. If you want to look up crazy sac games, you have to look at older games from around the years 1800-1900 around, especially those from paul murphy.
@@mb2776 Pawn sacs aren't usually used for tactics. They're more of a sacrifice for positional gain. Some lines require several moves deep of preparation since the sac needs to show compensation at a high engine depth to prove that it's worth going into.
@@mb2776 That's inherently not true. You learn the "basics" because, as indicated by the name, they are basic and integral to gameplay in itself. There are a multitude of openings and lines that revolve entirely around the idea of a sacrifice, either for positional or tempo advantage. It is always something that is present, and, as I stated in my OP, it was a common tactic of AI, which plays much "better" chess than humans. The huge piece swings of Paul Morphy isn't what I'm talking about. And when I say common, I don't mean common as in its something you wish to do every game, i.e castling (generally). When I use the word common, I mean the tactic is a common possibility at the highest levels of chess, where they are capable of taking advantage of such a tactic. And tactical play defines high level chess, because tactical play is what allows players to exploit momentary imbalances or inaccuracies of the opponent's position, turning subtle advantages into decisive outcomes. Even in strategically dominated games, tactics are the tools by which plans are executed, as precise calculation ensures the success of long-term strategies. Getting that one piece advantage doesn't just fall out of the sky. To apply to AW, you don't want to open every game with transports/APCs, but an early transport/APC is always an option on the maps where you believe you can either capitalize, or your opponent cannot.
I found your AWBW content maybe a couple weeks ago. No idea why YT decided to show you to me, but I have a lot of nostalgia for AW games, and that lead to me binging a ton of videos by you. I think regarding the early pipe seam shots from inf, it's more of a "why not" thing. The enemy knows your infantry will be there on that turn to get the base, and you never know if that one percent could let you break it a turn earlier. Rare but conceivable.
About the lander, theres some contention. I built a lander for the purpose of reinforcing the 1-base side with an extra vehicle per turn, woth the plan of rotating towards the strong side once the push succeeded. Using it to push towards the strong side however is pretty mediocre. It can be nice to support the center, but theres less fighting there in general.
I used a black boat to send infantry north and to the center for more flexibility. I definitely think it kept my opponents forces occupied in the middle and made my own look more spread out than they actually were. The lander would certainly sell that better with recons and tanks but the black boat worked out in the end.
I think the original handheld games tended to reward the player for opening transport and rushing bases in a lot of missions and custom maps. I guess RIP has found a way to handle it in competitive play.
If you think about it, rip isn't really behind a tank when he opens up with his APC. His APC gets to use immidiatly, with boosting it provides additional movement. A tank is only usefull in the front line. If you build a tank and it doesn't attack and doesn't defend, it's like your tank doesn't even exists. It took till day 12 for the exact tank to have any effect and that tank wasn't even faster on the frontlines compared to the other tanks of rip_. In the end, it only helped to destroyed 2 infantry when those allready captured enough buildings. And it got destroyed on turn 13. So, dark raider build a tank, the tank doesn't have any effect for the vast majority of the game and the tank didn't even do really much. Dark lost for one obvious reason. Starting on Day 10, he had 16,000 value of units (2 artilleries, a few infantries), doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. All that detachment of troops achieved was taking one city from Rip on turn 14, nothing else. You do not send a detachment of units valuing at 16,000+ just to capture only one property off of your opponent and do nothing else of import and/or value for the rest of the game. That's a recipe for disaster. Meanwhile Rip was committing his entire unit production to fight on one front, towards his opponent's HQ (he was using his transport to ferry infantries from his base north of the port). With 2 bases pumping out only infantries and 1 base only making vehicles, Dark's area around his HQ got flooded with enemy vehicles backed up by a ton of infantries. All of Dark's infantries got wiped out and had none left to shield his more valuable units and more importantly his HQ. While for Rip he still had a bunch of infantries flooding in to capitalize on his wins and started capping properties, eventually taking the HQ without much difficulty. (Edit) While all of this is happening, half of Dark's infantries are all in the north escorting 2 artilleries doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. This is a common mistake among AWBW players, sometimes even for high ranking ones. Making 1, 2, or even 3 artilleries only for them to do nothing for most of the match. That's just 6,000-18,000 of unit value going to waste. If you are going for artilleries, make sure you're actually going to bring them to the fight while still being smart about their placement/usage.
it's even worse, the tank he build compared to the APC also did nothing. it destroyed two infantry that already captured their buildings. You can only win on an early material sac for tempo with a rush to punish it.
9:11 I'd argue that's not a long term investment. Attack units' value is usually determined by how much damage they do vs. their cost-- and people don't usually take into account repair bills. Every early property rip gets is 1000 funds his opponent doesn't, and if he gets there two or three days early with even two properties, rip's paid out his econ (as we see a little later on). More important is the base action economy-- in a much more real sense than the Funds economy, bases only build one unit per turn. The opportunity cost of an APC is any other unit that base could have built with the funds available. But if you're transporting your inf more efficiently than your opponent, you need less inf, and can buy more vehicles during the cap phase. And, indeed, at 9:56, we see that rip has matched tempo, getting the recon and tank out on the same turn. While it's less forward than Dark R41der's, rip has already taken a one property advantage and through a beautifully efficient APC move, has secured two more early properties and will have a 2 property lead at 13:27 and only getting wider. Also, note the front switch and four-property advantage at 14:00! The APC has already paid off. And just to prove that, the Neotank wouldn't have been possible without base-skipping at 16:39 without the use of the APC. 19:38 -- Dark Raider not only doesn't know where the bulk of the forces are, he's planning on using that combined artillery-infantry force to take the north and make HQ threat. 25:19 The other thing to remember is: rip has an 8-unit advantage thanks to massed fire in the south. and Dark Raider probably knows it, which is why he conceded as soon as the HQ cap rolled out. I'm going to once again argue that this isn't trolling, though sometimes I wonder how Rip is able to make the right call every time in fog. Good match!
Watching that APC just zooming across the plains is a fun thing to see. ... Meanwhile this Klanen is a luck CO. 31% matches with tough dude and the robot. And pretty across the board with others, besides Grimm and Sonia.
The lander was a very sensible move from Raider. Normally, building a lander makes you give up initiative big time, but because Raider waited to build it, and Rip build an APC, it was probably safe to do it. Raider wanted to capitalize on Rip's lost momentum, so he needed to keep pressure going.
Nah... A Lander costs a full 7K (one Tank worth) more than an APC, and unlike the APC it isn't speeding up early game captures, so the APC likely costs less than 5K relatively speaking. The Lander also only helps vehicles into the center earlier, when the real issue is that Raider needed more troops in his HQ area NOW instead. That money could have gone to Copters, Tanks, or Neos instead.
Look at the exact specific tank that got build when the APC got build. Follow it over the whole match. The tank basically did nothing. Rip wasn't behind, he didn't lost momentum. A unit that does nothing compared to the APC which even provides additional movement due to boosting.
It's crazy to see Dark Raider's approach in the NW go nowhere because he only brought artillery and infantry. Without anything to advance with they couldn't dislodge the skeleton crew guarding rip's HQ, and since rip wasn't pushing on that side, he wasn't going to advance into the long-range units downfire. Seems like an obvious misplay in a replay, but when you can't see everything, it's not necessarily poorly played.
Unsurprisingly , a great match from Rip. transport opener & corner massing will be the upcoming winning meta. Also, a question for anyone who know around : which browser / extension / mod / plugin works to get SFX on AWBW ? what little i've tried didn't work so far.
I wonder if APC is on average more viable against Jake, as Jake player is more likely to build early artilleries, and, therefore, is less likely to be able to punish transport openers early enough.
Bwangs, organize a tournament where you can use top tier COs but are banned from using their strong units, for instance, must build mainly naval units with Eagle and Sensei, only direct units with Grit, etc.
23:17 uuh, Excuse me, Mangs? What was that calculation meant to show? That Jack powers works on plain? I think we already knew that! First check is Jack's tank with super attacking the arty from a regular plain. Second one is attacking from a city... I checked, and you are still correct! Destroyed pipe scene now count as plain tiles =)
I was confused a moment too, but I think he's showing that it's only a one-shot from plains, and from any non-plains tile it would not have killed. Since he did get the one-shot, then the destroyed pipe seam must have counted as a plains tile.
Since I'm interested in it, where could i find the progress on that Wars World site you talked about in some videos and made a changes list for a year ago?

The moment you see your game in the intro for Dark Raider and remember it's your turn. Lol he's legit btw.
Love the mega man music 💙
No other game gets me going to watch.
Whenever i think that we havent seen lash in a while a video comes out right after, im so confused, i cannot decide if lash is good or trash !😂
A lot of AW content these days, glad to see it.
Rip's APC gambit for the win
23:17 uuh, Excuse me, Mangs? What was that calculation meant to show? That Jack powers works on plain? I think we already knew that!
First check is Jack's tank with super attacking the arty from a regular plain. Second one is attacking from a city...
I checked, and you are still correct! Destroyed pipe scene now count as plain tiles =)
I was confused a moment too, but I think he's showing that it's only a one-shot from plains, and from any non-plains tile it would not have killed. Since he did get the one-shot, then the destroyed pipe seam must have counted as a plains tile.
@@PineappleFlau D*mn! You're right! I'm stupid and I owe Mangs an apologies.
Sorry Mangs! You're awesome!
Mangs keeps inventing new butcherings of "skadoosh." He can't keep getting away with it!
bladoosh
please lower the volume of background music 🙏
Will do!
Who needs football when we have awbw?

Are we sure Rip_ isn't a really well programmed AI, like those unbeatable chess machines? xD
If you think for a moment that Im going to roll over in round 4 against rip_ you're dead wrong.
Im coming for you, rip_!! Blobs rise up!
Good luck, your are going to need it!
pretty crazy 3am upload. and why did you resign when you have 2 labs ?
Can you add a second silver star to the 2nd most used co on the player cards? That 3-1-1 instead of 3-2-1 is driving me crazy

Oh, Mega Man 2 OST, let's go!
AND It's a rip_ game???? You spoil us-
9:18 well, gambits are fairly common from fide masters to grandmasters, even in classical chess so... what?
Since I'm interested in it, where could i find the progress on that Wars World site you talked about in some videos and made a changes list for a year ago?
That lander didn't do nothing. Dark actually had a good block rock. If he had two more tanks in the back he could have really brought the hurt.
IMO fog is how the game should be played. Gotta ban or nerf Sonja then though.
Sonja is bottom tier even in fog lmao
I need more
zoned out all the yapping cause okkusenman was playing.
Mangs are you going to check out Warside? It’s pretty reminiscent of advance wars, and the demo looks promising ^=^
Already made two videos about it.
Am I mistaken, or did Dark R41d3r pass his turn so rip could get the HQ cap?
This is definitely what he did
5:48 they are sayin hello to each other cute
what's the Megaman theme song in the beginning?
ruclips.net/video/Be9XVPFNUjY/видео.html
That would be Dr. Wily's Castle theme from Megaman 2.
RIP is the best player all time, his mmr doesn't lie.
