Well played Talose, I'm looking forward to a rematch sometime!
Great to hear your thoughts KMF. Really appreciate hearing the players' perspectives on banger matches like this one. Well played. I just wrote a comment grousing about how this match is another example of naval power being underwhelming, even on maps specifically designed to favor them. Do you also feel this way?
@@1_random_commenteryeahhhhh, if there was ever a chance to shine it was here since the drake def + sturm attack meant they were really hard to KO. It’s just tough to focus on naval builds when the non-naval units can just go somewhere else to fight where the boats can’t reach
@@Kilmefirst Thanks for the response. I was thinking more from a cost-to-damage perspective, but you're absolutely correct that the lack of mobility (especially compared to air) is also a factor. Cheers.
This entire match was a giant advertisement for why air units are better than naval units. Talose had the advantage on unit value for the entire second half of the game, yet it was KMF who was doing most of the threatening. The reason? Naval units offer worse value for their cost.
46:25 This is, I think, the quintessential example of the difference between "This unit is Bad" versus "This unit is Niche". A Carrier isn't the best unit in every situation, but in those situations where it is a good unit, it is easily one of the best possible. On a map swarming with Air threats, the ability to essentially reach out and delete one on demand is undeniably useful once you have the means to provide it the security it needs to work. As soon as Naval dominance was secured, the Carrier was an inevitability. Absolutely phenomenal match.
The married fire emblem tuber gave me a command and I must follow... Let's see if it goes the same the other direction. Mangs! Stop everything you are doing and read En Perpetua: The Ziegfried Saga on Royal Road.
The video skips to day 4 around 7:07. At first I thought this was just a glitch on my end but I reloaded the video and the skip is in the video itself.
32:31 Both players defending their Northern bases with Megatanks. Both knew it would cost 100k value to break it. But killmefirst knew what he wanted and *took it*. That was the difference.
What an absolutely INSANE game worth watching. My thoughts (Spoilers) -- -- -- As a viewer, at first, watching this match, I was like oh shit. Kilmefirst is way ahead, he's killing it. And then the drake powers came in repeatedly and i was like wow. Global damage is really doing a lot of heavy lifting, and these meteors aren't getting any value. Damn. I almost felt mad, because I thought Kilmefirst was doing his micro just way better, and then powers blew it out of the water. But that's advance wars in a way. In the mid game, once that port was taken and the north east base was defended, it felt impossible for Talose to lose. I watched wave after wave of global damage, and Kilmefirst's value dropping, as that -20 ATK (-10% ty com tower), struggled to dent the Megatanks. And then when it did, new ones were made. About 30~ min in, I was like wow this sucks. Is there any reason to watch the rest of the video? This is a stomp. But, I was again, wrong. I think the gradual reinforcements from Kilmes's position overwhelmed Talos who simply couldn't reinforce as easily, and over time, he overwhelmed him. I'm not 100% sure what happened really, but I think the blown up 5HP Megatank was the decisive blow (instead of deleting/rebuilding) it. Then, as mangs said, it seemed to rapidly shift in the other direction, as Kilme captured a ton of stuff, and Talose was on the backfoot to try and go somewhere else. Still typically ahead in value, but having lost the race for the property war in the end, which was wild. Pleasantly surprised that my expectations were subverted TWICE, in the middle of damn cool naval battle, where we saw ALL kinds of units fighting each other, on a sick ass map that's mixed base. 10/10, definitely worth the title of the youtube video.
Yeah, seems like the battle was won and lost on that top right factory. 48:25 Tulose moves his 2nd tank just out of range, and it seems like a big error as it takes away enough pressure to let the enemy units rearrange and an infantry 9 to start a capture. Two super talented players either way.
Kilmefirst showing what a man's persistence looks like with that base capture in the top right, talk about impressive. Things just started building into an avalanche from there, which was impressive because of how behind Sturm was throughout much of the game until that point. Great game.
Mangs the choice of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans music over this video just completely made my day. I haven't heard it in literally 25 years. Absolutely works for this video too. And the Warcraft 2 Music being played over a naval battle? *Chef's Kiss*
The rule is: Naval = like without seeing. We really really need more weird AW battles, that was the essence when we used to play with friends on the cartridge, I personally would change completely naval units, we all know that they suck, it makes no sense to keep them sucking if they have changed half of the COs for the tiers.
Now that I've watched it I'm convinced, this 1 hour pasted in 5 minutes, you should have take the time and spend 3 hours with this because this is exactly what this game was intended for. This is a proper Advance Wars game, no exploiting the broken triangle between B-cops and lack of A.A, 4 stupid walls with artillery stalling 10 turns... This is a game where every single unit can be the best and the worst unit of the game and every turn is a possible flip of the match because of it, every single unit have a purpose here there is no useless ports on a pond, no useless terrain disadvantage for certain units, this is a game for the game.
Agreed but Inteligent System (Advance Wars 1, 2, DS and Days of ruins developers) doesn't know how to balance units with player vs player in mind. The year the games are developed in 2000s where advance wars is popular only in like America and maybe Europe and for kids back then before we became adults (and kids are obviously stupider than adults in almost everyway, including playing games competitively and knowing how to strategise, so easy units like cheap direct units like Infantry, Recon, Tank, Anti-Air, B-copter seem overpowered by Inteligent System think it's not OP because how dissposable, the bodyblock and scouting utility its has but the players aren't skilled enough to use indirect, how to save up to able to build naval, naval's unique triangle which include indirect which is battleship beat cruiser, cruiser beat submarine and subnarine beat battleship, etc.). Also naval's mediocore stat is because it's reputation in real life fighting air units and the result is air is victorious, so making them great or viable reduce realism like Advance Wars Days of Ruins (although who care about realism in video games except dumb game journalism that overly care about realism over fun & balanced gameplay nowadays).
Yeah, I agree. There have already been so many changes made to COs to make them a bit more balanced, it would only make sense to also rebalance the units a little. Maybe they'd even figure out a way to make missiles useful.
I think we could see naval units if they just made the maps bigger. Consider instead of doubling the funds per city, why not make a map bigger with more cities? You'd have the same total income up for grabs as a high funds game. Then you can make a continent with the HQs and 75% of the properties and some islands with cities and ports on them. Put some pre-deployed missiles on the neutral island cities. No one would be willing to let the other side grab all the island cities, so that would force naval units to be made. At the same time, there would still be a lot of room on the continent for ground vs ground fighting, and the B-coptor, AA, and tank triangle. The maps aren't big enough to do that, you make some islands and what's left in the center is smaller than a AW2 VS map.
I will say, I always root for the Sturm player in any game he's in, it's rare to see him and he's my favorite CO, Regardless, absolutely amazing match a real mudslinging brawl to the bitter end. I really though talose had it and then in a few days the tempo of the match completely shifted. Super fun to watch

Talose gave away the victory. 47:53 If his carrier attacked the 4hp bomber instead of the 10hp one, it would make space for a new megatank to hold out. Another carrier will arrive in 3 turns and change everything.
I think you're right. It makes sense he went for the full HP bomber, I think instinctually I would have done the same, but this is high funds after all, the money doesn't actually matter that much. What matters is positioning, reinforcement, and big picture strategy. KMS went for airports from the beginning, and singled out a base to take at all costs. That is what ultimately won him the match. I think it's still possible KMF may have taken the base if Talose had done a good job walling after, he might have had enough force to take down 2 Megatanks, but it seemed to me that Talose grew concerned about a meteor strike hitting his force as he also pulled a lot of his navy away. His navy was very scary, but at the same time it just couldnt project on land, and they spent a lot of time dancing around his meteor strikes rather than attacking.
Hi Mangs. I have something interesting to tell you about advanced wars. We both know the silly movements of the AI in advanced wars right?. What if I tell you it was programmed to move as if Fog of War is present?.. field training 5 it stops right in front of the cities.. it does so so that it does not get - trapped- like it could possibly have been in a fog situation. It doesn't see your tank is going to close off the bridge. Nell hints at checking the enemy range so we know the tanks should force you to defend and sacrifice the cities. Also the game is also designed to teach you not to rely on tanks so much and really focus on developing indirect combat skill. I know you don't score high that way but it is more "advanced"
Talose was so damn tough to kill on mid game, actually seing cruisers boosting copters made me feel like Sami's Battle Mistery (the one of protecting the infantry from Drake)
Mom asks me to stop playing watch dogs and go to the bathroom : I don't care 😤 Mangs asks me to drop everything and watch turn-based strategy for 1 hour flat : Yes sir 🙇♂️
23:46 That artillery could deal 64%-71% damage. So depending on how much HP the infantry had, (AWBW only shows HP in steps of 1-10 instead od 1-100, which is the correct way. (AWBW really should change that, even though the AW series always did it this way.)) it may have had a chance to survive. On a full 70% health if would have been a 75% chance to survive.
Bravo kilmefirst turned the tide of battle in the last few turns especially seeing how drake had the top half of the map locked with battle ships bravo good game
Props to Mangs for using some of the best ship-themed OSTs available in Warcraft for this, match always a good time to hear it, so iconic and fitting, can't wait to watch this and have a good time.
So complete noob question, he mentions around 8:45 that he waits on the rocket so he does not miss unit movement. Why is this important? As for as I know it changes nothing with how the unit functions. I beat every Advance wars campaign (expect AW 2 reboot as I haven't had the time yet. ) and as far as I know it makes no difference.

Genuinely one of the most insane matches I've ever seen with such a strong to and fro from each player. I had no idea who was going to win till the end.
Another great replay with commentary Mangs. A very fun and interesting game to follow. A suggestion to maybe making your replays even better, is to use a second screen where you can use a damage calculator (Because as we know we can't use it during a replay). This way you can find out if it was luck or not if an attack was lucky or not. Keep up the great work!
On a big map like this Drake's Super power is usually going to be more valuable than Sturm's, and it costs less too. Sturm was fighting uphill here. The second SCOPs of the match really highlight this. Drake hits every enemy unit, deals around 80k of value, and weakens units on the frontlines. Sturm's meteor gets baited, only hits two units for 35k value, and they weren't on the frontlines. Not great for him...
Thoughts after getting to the end (Spoilers) .. .. If it was a "naval battle" it was certainly a one-sided one. I honestly think it shows just how bad naval units are from a cost-to-utility perspective. The carriers that you applauded didn't stop the bombers in the end. The battleships couldn't break the megatanks. The real MVP units were actually the bombers, which is just sad. Really wishing for a "Balanced Wars" with the homebrew Destroyer unit and reduced naval costs.
Yeah, I was really disappointed by the Carriers, even considering Sturm's extra defense. Once the high value units came in, it felt like they were hitting each other with wet noodles on all fronts, nothing really did damage.
I super underestimated Drake on this map, the global damage just stacks so well in HF. Some random thoughts (spoilers):

38:00 call em Halsey or something lol

Thank you for another video JANGS
That was an exciting match.
I love Mangs excitement over Cruiser Boosting.
What happened day 23-23?
Another great replay with commentary Mangs. A very fun and interesting game to follow.
A suggestion to maybe making your replays even better, is to use a second screen where you can use a damage calculator (Because as we know we can't use it during a replay). This way you can find out if it was luck or not if an attack was lucky or not.
Keep up the great work!
You cant win with one airport vs 4 airports.
i still hate how sturm works in awbw
What music do you use in your videos? Whatever it is you've definitely made a good choice in background music
orks and humans from WoW
For this video, introduction was Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans. During replay, Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness.
An absolutely grueling battle to the end, I never saw that turnaround coming. Peak music choice Mangs!
A naval and air CO....you mean Greyfield? cause thats just Greyfield mangs, you want Greyfield., joke aside that was a great match.
Okay, Mangs. I stopped what I was doing. What's going on?
No spoilers but i wasn't exactly surprised
51:50 skipping over / cutting out a full turn of Talose during the endgame - I'm not a fan of that.
Has anyone thought to make bridges destroyable like pipe seams.
does mangs know you can calculate in your head how much damage typhoon does
Drake + Eagle ship❤
They adopt for their shared love of sky and sea
No.
I wouldn't have bet on killmefirst but GG
Thoughts after getting to the end

What an insane game! 11/10! So much fun!
One of talose's turn is missing at 52 min 😅
