    Wasn't expecting a feature-length movie today, let alone from one of my games
    Overall I do pick Eagle a lot in T2, but it's mainly about avoiding a mirror if possible (so if I think my opponent will pick Eagle then I'll go for Olaf or Max, but since it's fog I usually end up facing Olaf lol). I definitely wasn't aware of this tcopter variation when playing, and after seeing the infantry capping the com tower my short term goal was to snipe it after the cap with the arty + tank as it happened in-game, guessing there would be little resistance as I thought a lot more cap-skips were needed to get the infantry over there in time. I also make things worse by greedily moving the recon after my tank, hoping the recon wouldn't be in his vision after the infantry died (and again not expecting a lot of resistance).
    After the initial exchange I end up eating the tank shot, which is honestly fine as it doesn't snowball into a losing front and I can repair it quickly on the HQ along with the bboat, having it active again before the Winter Fury brings it back down, but what ultimately dooms me is that Elagatua does not have a reason to stare down my army with the tower in his hands and my excess artillery/mech builds go from important units that discourage slow trading (what Olaf wants) to immobile liabilities. On turn 13 I confirm that his army is committed to the bottom left and try to lure him to overextend by committing on the opposite side with my slightly superior force, hoping the amount of first strikes I'd get on the next turn would outweigh the impact of WF and let me retreat and stall right after. I do succeed in wiping almost every direct unit he had, limiting the potential of my army getting ran down after snow, but what I can't do is keep the income disparity (or tower disparity at that) at a reasonable level, getting to a point where it's too easy for Olaf to justify inefficient trades and really asking a lot from the Lightning Strike. In the end, the Neotank moving forward + several copter kills being available proves too tempting to resist and I SCOP without having the proper setup to retake anything, and while the damage in value and unit count looks impressive, it isn't enough on it's own to bring me back, I see it as Olaf having a deadlock on his 6k income and 2 tower advantage and resign soon after.
    In a way it's almost like the positioning mistakes are what baited me into using a LS that cannot win me the game.
    Very fun one at the end of the day though, and raises some expectations for whenever Elagatua decides to queue again in GL, as he hasn't been there since this game.

      I think he means to say that Max really needs to break through completely in order to win, where as Olaf has a bit more room for error.

    • @profeta4129
      @profeta4129 9 месяцев назад +12

      It's more that Max has to go on the initative to be winning, whereas Olaf and Eagle can sit back and play the positional game vs him (just clarifying in case some didn't understood that). Not really about more room for error I believe, you really don't want to make mistakes against Max as Eagle, specially early on, so you still need to play as accurate as you can, survive and then destroy everything with SCOP.

    A recurring theme is being able to know or estimate what's behind the fog without directly seeing it. Whether it's vision that disappeared a turn ago because your recon blew up, knowing the map and reinforce lanes, knowing the enemy player or CO, etc. So memory, map knowledge, meta knowledge... It's all very complicated. Respect to these players for being able to factor all that in

    Really great video Deejus and Elagatua. I'm not really a fog fan, but if ever I begin to like it more, it would be because of how Elagatua plans his games. Often I see in Discord that in fog you don't need to think as much as in Standard, but watching Elagatua's analyses, that may actually be a myth.

    That T copter moving infantry on Elagatuas sides made the biggest impact of the game. The fact that Elagatua had that much infantry on the front line at all time as suppose to Rips lightning strike being devestating yet had no capture phase follow up, won E man the game. And he mentioned this on like day 5. Great planning.

    Elagatua's analysis are always very in-depth and it's clear that he has a great understanding if the game, and he is very articulate and open about his thought process.
    My number 1 rule for advance wars from watching these videos and through my very brief time playing is that the opening is the most important part of the game by far!
    Advance wars is a game where things snowball, so having the time, patience and desire to pre-plan the opening is number 1. Every top player speaks about planning the opening.
    I don't have the time, patience or desire to do this, but for anyone wanting to seriously make their way up the ladder, taking that time to research and prepare the opening for the map is a sure fire way to do it.
    Assume your opponent is doing that prep, and if you don't do it too then assume you are starting every map suboptimally and will be punished for doing so.
    Doing that prep gives you a chance to build. It's harder to learn everything else when you are starting from behind. That little bit of prep before each match can be the difference between floundering around 800 (or dropping to 700) until things click, or making steady progress in your understanding and on the ladder.
    In my limited games i could always tell who prepped. I won a handful, but it always felt like it was because my opponent fumbled the ball rather than i caught up by outplaying them, and that is because i would start off behind, get days into the battle and then start thinking about what i actually wanted to do! Fun, but not as fun as having more competitive games would be.
    As they say, "if you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail."

      Great point! Often is my downfall too haha

    • @Gatitasecsii
      @Gatitasecsii 9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah I personally think that's very disgusting and absolutely NOT how the game should be played.
      That's why I like Live league so much better.
      At the beginning of this video Elagatua said that _rip had been watching his other matches on this map to prepare for what he could do, and that just struck me as such a no-life kind of thing to do, kinda revolting tbh... Thankfully you can't do that the first time you face an opponent in a live match, and with them being a lot more chaotic, it's more about instinct and skill than stupid fkin preparation.

    • @turbo8628
      @turbo8628 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@Gatitasecsii watching their replays is next level try-hard, which is fine, even if i personally wouldn't do it. There is no right or wrong way to prepare for an advance wars game. I basically play live when i have weeks for a move cos that's just more fin for me personally, but there is nothing wrong with doing it.
      Every competition has scouting at a certain level. It's a strategy game, and that is an impietant part of the strategy.
      Anyway, my point was for openers. Live players have an opening in mind for maps. In advance wars, the capture game/opening is arguably way more important than any other factor, including the tendencies of the opponent.
      Move planner as well. I don't do any prep or use move planner as i prefer to "feel" the game, but if i wanted to get a high rating then these things will help, and are practically mandatory at the highest level. Nothing wrong with either approach, but one is definitely more professional and will have a higher chance of success.
