      @HawtSawz86 Cool!! If you get to yours before I get to mine, let me know what you think and what it likes, please!! I don't intend to dyno every little single mod on this saw; but, then again, I do want to test some preliminary mods such as Timing, Carb, Exhaust before I go to seeing what is available inside of the engine.

    While serious chainsaw enthusiasts and professional users may poopoo the 455 Rancher, it’s actually not a bad one to feature at all because a LOT of people have that saw. Husqvarna has been pushing those things out for many years now. I had one back towards the beginning of my affliction when the only other saw I had to really compare it to was my first 61. That 61 ran ok but I’ve since had some that were stronger. Anyway that 455 was just a little shy of keeping up with that 61 and I felt the anti-vibe was pretty good. It was a bit cumbersome being so wide but for bucking logs on the ground and for someone that only occasionally uses a chainsaw that hardly matters. My only real complaint with that one was when I had to have it all the way into a log I noticed right away that the exhaust outlet location was catching chips on fire. As was usually the case back then I switched back to my 61 for the bigger stuff.
    It should respond well to porting though and I’m sure there are people out there that might want a little better performance out of their 455. I’m curious to see what you have up your sleeve for the strato.

      @FarmlessFarmer-xs1he Yeah, it's by NO MEANS a pro saw; for the power (~ same advertised as my 026), it weighs 2lbs more than my 026. Huskys have a reputation of being a little more robust and weekend-warrior-friendly. I don't like the muffler too much;, but after doing so dang much muffler testing, I do see what they had up their sleeve; my complaint is, it's hard to open the seam and replacement mufflers are 5X what I gave for the saw!
      I'm thinking "bolt on" stuff (carb mod, intake mod, muffler mod, ign timing) before I open the saw for porting and just see what one could expect to gain without cracking the saw open. Thoughts?
      ... the Strato stuff may just be pie-in-the-sky stuff right now; it depends on the shape inside; I've got an idea though!! Be safe!!

    • @FarmlessFarmer-xs1he
      @FarmlessFarmer-xs1he 12 дней назад +1

      I think that’s a good plan of attack on this saw in particular because while I’m sure a lot of people would like a little more performance, a good portion of those people will not want or be able to open up their 455 to actually port it at all. I’m very curious about ignition timing changes with stock internals because I haven’t seen anyone do that yet. So fire away at that little 55.5cc Swedish machine!

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1  11 дней назад +1

      @FarmlessFarmer-xs1he I've built a spreadsheet for timing advance; I suspect a pipe may give it some more RPMs; with more RPMs, I can calculate the advance-needed (all else being equal).
      I agree; I think "bolt on" performance may be of interest.
      Between you, me, and the fencepost... ruined the 026 AGAIN!! Just got a new crank, cut the base, ported it, and put it together today; supposed to start cutting firewood for Dad on Monday; didn't video any of it.

    If ya got 2 of em AND they are both runners worthy of modding AND ya got the scoots - a 460 cylinder with a pop up piston and some piston mods/flow work on the transfers will wake it up along with a piped exhaust / carb tune … That’ll leave ya with 2 455 cylinders to monkey around with on the other one. The Duke saw salvage in Pa has a pop up
    Piston for the 455 for around $20 …. Just my 2c on that model

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1  12 дней назад +1

      @fabzacres-blackcat Your $0.02 is worth about six buck; nine with inflation. I wasn't going to drag this saw out too long as I'm not in-love with it; it feels a little clunky to me. My thoughts are Muffler (pipe), carb, and timing (considering others' opinions) before I ever pull the engine out. I feel that the intake conglomeration could be a little better. Pop-up and/or moving the bearing pockets was also a consideration. So far, I've only got the one; Super Dave sounds like he has another up for consideration.

    • @fabzacres-blackcat
      @fabzacres-blackcat 12 дней назад +1

      @@HayChaffandSawdust1 oh I hear ya there - a pipe , carb / intake mods and a sharp chain should do ya just fine! I’m not a huge advocate of advancing the timing unless it’s a known issue on a particular saw … in fact I have a few builds where I actually ended up backing off (retarding) the timing a few degrees by filing the key 🔑 and turning the flywheel clockwise. The 455 ranchers are what they are … most likely comparable to the STIHL 290 , both a a FAR cry from a good running 026 tho !

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1  12 дней назад +1

      @Super-Dave-Outdoors I've heard that these do respond well to timing advance.
      (tongue in cheek) I actually advance the timing on every single saw I own... hear me out. They are designed and recommended to run on 93/94 Octane; my tank here on the farm is 87 octane pure dinosaur squeezin's. By running 87, I am essentially advancing the timing.
      Comparing to a stock 290 is probably a little better; my head had it compared to a 250; tbh, I don't like either one of those either... while they are in their town clothes; once they are put into their work duds and build a callous or two, they ain't bad.

  • @matthewknight5641
    @matthewknight5641 9 дней назад +1

    Ive thought of trying to move the bearing pockets on one of my 25cc top handle saws. Its about the only way other than a pop up piston that i can see to get more compression.

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1  9 дней назад

      @matthewknight5641 It's not as hard as it sounds; getting the bearing pocket the right size correct and the base cut JUST right to that it's like holding a bunny; you don't want it getting away, but you don't want to squeeze until turds come out!! (You can actually distort the bearings and make them hard to turn). I did it on a Stihl 029 If you would like to see how I did it... ruclips.net/video/E3P925H9PcY/видео.html The results were (probably??) worth the time/work to do it. I did it using a lathe, but by-hand is nearly as easy. It works!! I don't know that I would do it for other people, but the satisfaction of doing it for the sake of learning and proof-of-concept was well worth it.

    A husky, Stratto port and a clamshell to boot! It’s funny how different regions have different brand dominance. Where I’m at we have a pretty even playing field so I have my hands in both. These saws respond well to porting because they are very restricted from the factory. I don’t have this exact saw but one and the same family. It liked a lot of timing advance. I raised and widened exhaust and raised uppers to match. The 4 series are box store huskys so don’t be too quick to judge the brand off this one.

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1  13 дней назад +1

      @andrewgrubb8947 Oh heck, I *LIKE* the box store clamshells. A person can ruin a couple of them and never leak any eye-water in his barley pop!! I appreciate the heads-up on what the saw likes. At this point, it's been on the dyno bone stock to get some stock heat numbers that I've been wanting for a *LONG* time. I think I want to do some mods to it before ever opening the engine (so we can see what kind of gains one could expect without "porting") such as muffler mod, timing advance, and a carb mod. The replacement mufflers are $50-$100, so will probably get a pipe; I don't like the intake "manifold" and think I can (maybe) do better with Delrin?? That's the plan, so far.... thoughts???

      @Super-Dave-Outdoors I appreciate the offer; let me get my paws into this one and see what I have. Fuel lines, sprocket, and (possibly carb) is the main problems with this one too. Do you happen to know if a rim-sprocket-upgrade is easy-peasy. Don't spend time searching; I'm not too lazy to use google... but if you already know? My sprocket is worn out and I don't intend to put a new old-style back on it.

      @Super-Dave-Outdoors 12 дней назад +1

      @@HayChaffandSawdust1pretty sure rim sprocket upgrade is a piece of cake.
      All strato ports do is shove fresh air into your transfers through the top port. The little puff of fresh air when the port first opens clears the cylinder of exhaust for incoming fuel air mixture. Running lean/ running hot should be BS if the system is operating correctly. Can't do anything to make that piston as light as a normal one though
