Hi Erica, I have fought a MS 251 c for 2 days, trying most things you could imagine. Then today watched this video, checked the saw chain location on the sprocket - Bingo! Redid the chain/sprocket assy and then I could start. This saw will never be easy to pull, but it needs half the effort now.

Lol I've seen the sprocket problem many times! And did it once myself when I got in a hurry. Good video, always enjoy them, wish you were closer, I have a couple of project saws that need help.......
People!! Yeah it is getting a little strange out there to say the least. Great video, made me chuckle. I helped someone cut out one of those nets you see on BlueBerry bushes once, it took us hours, he sucked the whole thing into the mower deck, what a mess.
Hello there.watching this over in England (UK)Derbyshire..find your videos extremely interesting and love the dry humour.I don’t know how you stay calm dealing with dipsticks or should I say members of the public.stay safe...
Yes I believe the real word things that happen,it’s truly weird and a lol situation.currently have two chainsaws husqvarna and stihl and look after them well, however watching the content in your videos I’ve learned a great deal of knowledge and thank you for sharing ,really enjoyed this video.enjoy your weekend, happy thanksgiving.cheers
Great video, thanks Erica. I'm guessing the water issue is mostly due to ethanol in the fuel, it soaks up water like a sponge. We don't have that much of an issue in Aus, ethanol is available but so is 91, 95 and 98 octane without ethanol. There are some good videos on youtube on removing ethanol from fuel, by adding a heap of water to the fuel in a clear container, shaking vigorously and then draining the water out from the bottom, the ethanol mixes with the water and comes out with it.
Amazing that the owner doesn’t know how to properly fit a chain 100% of the time. But is happy to assume the saw is faulty, without checking a simple thing.
That’s what that souped up rider I saw in last video does - it’s a racer COOL!! Another great saw vid👍. Ohh happy thanksgiving from Detroit. I look at Ontario everyday
At a shop I was working in before I retired, we had a newer JD rider come in with the complaint that it wouldn’t run. My wife happened to be with me in the shop that day and the first thing we checked was the fuel tank. I could see the water floating in the bottom of the tank. We sucked out all the water with a turkey baster and literally had a gallon jug of water when we were done! After completely emptying and drying the tank, blowing the fuel line out, changing the filter and emptying the carb bowl, putting in some fresh fuel it was running just fine. We asked the customer about it and he was just as baffled as we were!
That's a common issue for no starts, and also the backwards chain issue, " You guys just sharpened this chain but it won't cut"...well, that's because you installed it backwards!!!🤣 I also live in a small town in Montana, USA, so I've seen a lot of crazy ways to keep things going...done a few myself !!
Awesome video today lady♥ Loved the real world stories at the end!! They were hilarious and gave me a good laugh for the day♥ In all the years I've been using chainsaws I've never had the chain between the rim and the washer!! Just lucky I reckon. Keep up the great work Erica and Happy Thanksgiving to you folks up there♥
Ah-ha! Mystery of the weird attachment solved! I’ve seen videos of people bucking and turning the saw sideways to measure the next cut. That makes me chuckle..
Liked to see the "foreign objects under mower decks" footage! Seen some strange stuff myself, fixing machines from neighbours. Bread stuffed in a mower carb was the most strange one for me, but then the owner told me he had a 3 year old that loved to help maintain the mower. I guess he or she did a bit "after hours" without Dad! 8^) Anyway keep smiling and have a Happy Thanksgiving. Cheers!
FYI. The wood length cut off device on that saw! On my 038 and others, I measure back from the tip and score a line on both sides of the bar. When cutting I hold saw on its side bar downside and touch the running chain to the wood. Then either cut and repeat or move down the log and mark others to be cut.
Great video - just when you think you have seen it all you realize that someone will prove that wrong. Hope you have a great thanksgiving and enjoy the races and you find a surprise in your mailbox that allows you to "take a stand" so to speak.
You!! I just received mail from you yesterday! This community of people just blows my mind!! I will show everyone what you sent me in an upcoming video! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND YOUR GIFT, STEW!
My favorites are the fuel sample and the battery😂!! Been following your channel since the start always look forward to the next one! Great job! Looking to get my hands on intake and exhaust blockers for pressure testing. Which are the most common ones I should carry? Cheers from Ottawa Ontario!!!
Happy Thanksgiving 😊 A simple mistake put the chain on incorrectly, sharp chain explained the fine dust, properly in a hurry then didn’t realise his error, a good habit is to slide the chain after tension ing the chain😊 A wonderful gesture not to charge him, repeat customers are important sometimes you let things slide😇
I had a Honda mower in the shop that won’t start. When i pulled the cord it was blowing bubbles out of the muffler. The tank was full of soap for a floor cleaning machine😂 Weird things happens here in Sweden to 😂
I like the old style sprockets less chance of this problem happening for home owners who use there saw 1 or 2 times a year. Mac saws are a pain with that sprocket.
I wish the fix on my MS361 was that simple. Local shop put a new carburetor on it and the first time I started it and cut, it would, that I could say, it would spit out the exhaust. Ran two full tanks through it with no problems and on the third tank after a couple of cuts, at idle it would shut off. Would fire back up on first pull and would make a cut. After 3 or 4 times it doing this, it shut off and wouldn’t start. Next two days and it still won’t start. Should be interesting talking to the guy this week about what’s wrong with it.
I love Stihl MS361’s - great saws! I did a 2 part video about a well used MS361 several months ago! Ask your tech: did he/she pressure / vac test the engine first, did he check that the tank vent is working, and did he install a new OEM carb or an aftermarket carb. Let me know 😊
@@marriedwithsmallengines wow, I can’t believe you responded. I’ve watched all your videos since I seen your channel. This saw is awesome. The original problem with it was if it wasn’t ran completely out of fuel, it would leak fuel into the cylinder and it wouldn’t start. Changing plugs would let it start again. I was busy and I forgot to drain the fuel out of the tank and a few days later I was ready to cut a couple trees down and I filled up the tank and it wouldn’t start because I left fuel in it. Tried two new plugs and still wouldn’t start. Took it to the local shop and they said it needed a new carb. I completely agreed. I just talked to someone at the, not the guy who is actually working on it and their paperwork showed that they did put a new Stihl carb on it. The guy said that they ordered two and they will probably put that second one on, but I’m not sure. As long as I ran it out of fuel or drained the gas out of it after I was done cutting, that saw ran perfectly. Started on 2-4 pulls and just wouldn’t stop. So frustrating. But I know something was different the first chunk I cut off a tree, it was different. When getting to the bottom of the chunk being cut and letting off the throttle as it was coming down to an idle , it would spit. The sound. The guy at the shop asked if it was a backfire. I said it didn’t sound like a backfire to me, it was like a spit. Every time I cut a chunk, coming down to an idle it does it. If they ran it before I picked it up, they had to hear that sound. While I was cutting, I was like, maybe that’s the way the new carb works or a new design. I don’t know, I cut and do car audio. That’s what I do. I take it to the shop if I have problems, lol. Ran two full tanks, no problems and after a couple of cuts on the third tank it started shutting after I cut a chunk off and the saw would get to idle. But would fire right back up till now it won’t. Won’t even try. If I would’ve drained the fuel out like I knew I needed to, I would be using it today and have my brand new MS182 as a backup. But I only have the 182 today. But still honored you responded. Probably my newest favorite channel since I run 2 Stihl chainsaws. Just watched the 261 with chain not on the sprocket. That’s crazy. Don’t think I ever did that. I’d probably be embarrassed if I took my saw in and the problem, lol. Looking forward to the next video. Have a good and safe weekend.
Sod that charge him double 😂 just kidding. I had a MS251 in the workshop a few weeks back with the same problem, well in fact it was in for a new coil and the chain was in terrible condition but he said he had a new one at home to go on. So it left the workshop running great and he came back in the next day saying it would not start, and sure enough he had done what this fella had done, got the chain jammed between the sprocket and washer when he fitted it. Straight away I noticed he had fitted a new chain and it would not rotate freely at all, then as soon as the clutch cover was removed there it was. 🤦♂️😂
I was embarrassed at the chainsaw shop in 2008, but the story is also a bit hard to believe. The saw had an issue that I could not figure out, so I brought it to the shop. I told them that the saw won't cut straight anymore; it is so bad the bar wedges itself in the cut and gets stuck, but the chain is sharp. The mechanic looked at the chain and said, "The chain is NOT sharp." So what had happened? I had just filed the chain, so I assumed it was sharp. Even while it wedged itself the saw still threw out nice big chunky chips. So no reason to think it was dull? The shop took the saw in, they could not find anything wrong, they just filed the chain for me. After I got it back I could finish my cut and saw what caused the problem. There was something in the wood, small stone, nail or something. I hit this object so that one row of teeth was totally dulled but the other row was unharmed. Thats why it was still able to throw big chips but totally pulled to one side. Almost impossible to hit something with that precision if you wanted to. So if I ever have an issue like this, I will examine and sharpen the chain myself and not make any assumptions. By the way I was the person who made the comment about a prank. I did not mean you pulling a prank on us or the customer pulling one on you. There are a lot of weird and mean people out there so I think it is totally possible that someone put water in the can or the tank to harm your customer. Gas can being left out in the rain with the lid open is of cause also a valid explanation. And since we are both waiting on spare parts for our crystal balls we might never now.
I can not believe someone thinks this is a warranty claim, oooo hang on i have been working on small engines for 40 years, yep they sure do think they are ? :-)
Haven't watched the video yet Erica but i'm panicking as this model is my new weapon and it's only had a couple of hours use. Lets see where this goes........ Edit, Panic over and to be fair although its never happened to me, i'd probably do it too. With regards to Stihl, their glove instructions are "handy". And in the UK we have a saying "There's none so queer as folk" I've been a cop for over 20 years and there's a world of weird out there. Stay Safe and keep 'em coming but consider more "story time" re the customers and faults. This has legs 🙂 and we all love a true one.
Ole boy either got in a hurry tryin to get that new chain on or someone was distracting him, probably talking his ear off. It happens to the best of us. No harm no foul.
a little FYI. For those people that use canned gas, DON't. I bought a brand new small Stihl chainsaw years ago and bought a can of that gas with the saw . For whatever reason there was no oil mixed with it and burned up my saw. Dealer would not replace or even repair because of that bad batch of gas. Only chain saw I ever ruined in 30 years of cutting firewood and trees. I now never use ethanol gas in my small engines , and never canned gas.
Electronic Saw: are the electronic saws easier to start than standard. Any problems with electronic stihl chainsaws electrics. Thank you for great video.😊
I don't have anywhere new the volume that your setup has , We all have stories. Maybe whe should be uploading the weirdest things we see. LOL. Or maybe a saturday stream conversaition. 🙂I will talk to Ken
Operator error. My guess is, customer installed a new chain, etc. I would be so embarrassed 😳. I have done this same thing, although I did catch my Mistake before I took it for service 😅.
It depends on what the aftermarket parts are. In this case, I don't see any reason to void the warranty (if there had been a warranty issue). But I'm not Mother Germany :) Final say doesn't always rest with me.
Morning from Oz, Erica. Thanks again for the informative content. PS did u have time to discover what the round thing that tipped out in the fuel was from a few jobs ago?
Any vids on any brand of saw that when tipped bar down at idle it will within 2 second stumple and die. It will start right back up at bar Horizontal but will repeat the scenario when tipped bar down. For reference it’s a walbro WA19A carb. On 1977 Poulan Super XXV Micro.
Some of the crap you shown id be so embarrassed to show my face back up because of something that simple as taking a shoe out LOL. Id feel stupid LOL. That one cracked me up LOL. Happy thanksgiving and i hope you have a great Thanksgiving 😉
Looks like they were trying to clean up cover up for warranty. Got all those doo dads on there but didn't route the chain . You see that all the time and keep a straight face explain it to then
The containers are already sitting there. He didn't want them, he didn't want to spend any money, and he didn't want to talk to humans. There was no winning that one.
@@marriedwithsmallengines I think you are mistaken, I think he needed someone to do a simple task like mixing that for him and if you said "sure we can figure out a mixture of heavy and medium" and give him some positive words mixed it and he would get what he needed. I was not there so I don't know, but sometimes it is not the item or the (robotic) service people need.
I guess it doesn't mater what industry it is, people everywhere make embarrassing mistakes. In the 80's I went to a customer account where a secretary complained her computer monitor had quit working that morning. When I got there I opened the case on the monitor and a few seconds later I informed her that she needed to find a new home for her plant besides on top of the monitor. She seemed a bit puzzled since her plant was not there when I came in and she asked how I knew she kept her plant on top of the monitor. I told her the same way that I knew that she had watered her plant that morning, by the small puddle of water on the monitors mother board. That was a pricey mistake on her part as the company I worked for had a policy that billable calls were charged $200 and hour with a 2 hour minimum and that was 40 years ago.
I’ve Seen That a Lot Myself 😳😀😊 I’ve Even Seen One So Bad The Crank Was Grooved Out By The Chain 😭 That Battery and Underwear on The Spindle Lofl 😂😂😂😂 I’ve Seen Crazy Things Myself “Happy Thanksgiving “ 😎👍🏼
Just out of curiosity how much do you usually charge for a minor user induced issue like this? Nvm, got to the part of the video where you said you weren’t gonna charge him

Yes please bring on the racing. Looks fun. The coat hanger wire on the battery 😂😂.
That watery fuel is the worse I’ve ever seen.

Watery fuel is common, daily problem nowadays. The customer never knows how the water got in there.

This is something that typically happens when people put the chain/bar back on the saw after the chain/bar has been removed.

Good !
Nothing to worry about :)
Ole boy either got in a hurry tryin to get that new chain on or someone was distracting him, probably talking his ear off. It happens to the best of us. No harm no foul.
My MS261 has a 0.50” .325 chain and Light 04 bar. Can I use 0.63” .325 chains and old rollomatic bar without changing the rim sprocket?
Yes you can
a little FYI.
Let's look at the races
Nice video my friend 👍
Thank you, Friend! :)
Electronic Saw: are the electronic saws easier to start than standard. Any problems with electronic stihl chainsaws electrics. Thank you for great video.😊
He should get 10/10 for a sharp chain, I guess WCS don't make a Bark Box for that saw!
somehow 2 shops sell 372XP's and i want to know if its a good plan to buy one (cuz i think they're gone or something)
I don't have anywhere new the volume that your setup has , We all have stories. Maybe whe should be uploading the weirdest things we see. LOL. Or maybe a saturday stream conversaition.
🙂I will talk to Ken
Hi Bruce!
If everyone wants to hear more stories, stop into Ken’s Small Engine Livestream Saturdays at 2pm!
Operator error. My guess is, customer installed a new chain, etc. I would be so embarrassed 😳.
I have done this same thing, although I did catch my Mistake before I took it for service 😅.
Does adding aftermarket things to a saw void warranty,
It depends on what the aftermarket parts are. In this case, I don't see any reason to void the warranty (if there had been a warranty issue). But I'm not Mother Germany :) Final say doesn't always rest with me.
What's the difference between a MS 261 and MS 261C? I own the 2018 MS 261.
Morning from Oz, Erica. Thanks again for the informative content. PS did u have time to discover what the round thing that tipped out in the fuel was from a few jobs ago?
Hi!, Yes, it was a piece of his fuel tank vent. There will be an update video about this saw - because it isn't over yet!
Ooh exciting (yes my life is dull😂) thankyou for replying seeing how how busy you are
Hilarious ending of video...
Idiots are so funny you gotta LOVE THEM!!
HAHAHA
Cheers from Croatia!!
Cheers to You!
Gotta love those easy fixes, but it blows my mind that people use this stuff and have absolutely NO clue about how it works or how to troubleshoot.
I'm sure we will have coverage of this in an upcoming video.
" ... a dog leash -- thankfully not a dog." 🤣
Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your weekend.
Thank you! You too!
Hard to believe people are so inept they can't even check if something is obstructing something that's supposed to spin at high RPM!
Some of the crap you shown id be so embarrassed to show my face back up because of something that simple as taking a shoe out LOL. Id feel stupid LOL. That one cracked me up LOL. Happy thanksgiving and i hope you have a great Thanksgiving 😉
Mistakes happen - god knows I've made mistakes too. I don't hold it against them :) Just a gentle tease now and again.
@marriedwithsmallengines haha very true, mistakes do happen
Customer error again!!! Well done you!!🍺🍺💪💪🤘
Thanks again!
Looks like they were trying to clean up cover up for warranty. Got all those doo dads on there but didn't route the chain . You see that all the time and keep a straight face explain it to then
16:30 What you do is, you go get a container and put in one medium and one heavy for him and charge him and send him on his way?
The containers are already sitting there. He didn't want them, he didn't want to spend any money, and he didn't want to talk to humans. There was no winning that one.
@@marriedwithsmallengines I think you are mistaken, I think he needed someone to do a simple task like mixing that for him and if you said "sure we can figure out a mixture of heavy and medium" and give him some positive words mixed it and he would get what he needed. I was not there so I don't know, but sometimes it is not the item or the (robotic) service people need.
Awesome. Whaaaaaat
Wow! :)
Thank you! Thank you SO much for watching and commenting! Your always here, every video, cheering me on!!
That’s a funny battery connection 😢 People are foolish and not very smart 😂
as far as the ones you seen, what saw is better? a 271 farm boss, a 291 or a 261 cm? is spending the extra 200 dollars on a pro saw worth it?
Hi! Yes, I would go 261 if it’s in the budget
@marriedwithsmallengines ok, if the 261 was not in the budget what would you get? A ms271 ms291?
I love my 261, but slipping off the sprocker is always a potential issue.
Just out of curiosity how much do you usually charge for a minor user induced issue like this?
Nvm, got to the part of the video where you said you weren’t gonna charge him
Maybe he used the mower to cut to wire to the right length for the battery ?? 😂😂😂😂
Hi. Can I send a saw in for service?
