After signing up to join the Air Force I failed the hearing test (one ear) ended up going to an old family doctor that irrigated my ear and was about to give up but he gave it one more try and out popped a chunk of wax. I passed that hearing test, went on to see many parts of the USA and travel abroad (South Pacific), met my wife, attended college. Big shout out to that doc and my parents for taking me there and their support.
Managed to have both ears blocked with earwax. Irrigation of the ears, at my doctors actually made it worse. They suggested an ear clinic that used a micro suction method. This worked really well. The clinicians who carried out the suction procedure called the irrigation or syringing method medieval!
From the time I was a young child, I was told to not put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear. Have followed this advice for 70 years and never have had ANY ear problems.
I was born deaf in one ear and wear a hearing aid in my other ear. While on a Caribbean vacation a year ago, my good ear blocked with wax after snorkelling. No hearing for almost 24 hours. My son who is a scuba diver got some rubbing alcohol at the dive shop, was told to combine 1:1 with vinegar. After instilling a few drops at a time, my ear cleared up. Upon arrival home, my audiologist removed quite a lot of wax from that ear. I now make a point of having her check at least twice a year.
The VA hospital just called me a few minutes ago to check my ears on 1-13 25 and clean them as I was watching this video. I told her I just used used Debrox and a rubber bulb and flushed large chunk of wax out of my ear that the Dr. saw a couple days ago. That stuff really works good and I am still going in for my appointment to let them take a look anyway. Thanks so much for all your great videos Dr.`s Ft. Wayne, IN.
I've been treating with an Otolaryngologist every 6 months for the last 23 years and have my ears cleaned. The treatment is quick, painless and prevents wax build up.
First class advice from the three Drs, impacted wax and resulting tinnitus negatively impacts my mood and motivation so much, can be painful after flying. What a relief when it’s gone.
When I was 9 years old, I learned the hard way by cleaning your ears with a q-tip. Since then, I add 4 are surgeries because of it. The first one was a full reconstruction and they have to cut me back behind my ear to drill into my head to get into the master cavity. About 6 months later a second one to remove the cyst that some how grow. Then in 2019 I had 2 more surgeries. Another full reconstruction of the inner ear and masteroid cavity because of all the infection. The Doctor had to remove a infection size of a quarter behind my eardrum. If I haven't the surgery when I did, Doc said I'll be dead within a year because of the infection would have spread to the brain. Then the last one to redo the skin graft. Bottom line is, only go to your Doctor to have your ear cleaned out.
When I was six tubes were surgicaly installed next to my eardrums that were designed to drain fluid and to fall out on their own after one year. I wasn't allowed to get any water in my ears. I guess i fell into that habit for the next 57 years. Six months ago I had my doctor to check my ears and found out that my eardrums are occluded with wax in so much as he couldn't see my eardrums. After he recommended me getting and applying Debrox in my ears for two weeks I flushed the left ear with warm water using a bulb syringe and a nicely sized plug of earwax came out the left ear. I can hear so much better out of that ear plus i can hear high frequencies again. I still have to work on the right ear now as the wax in it seems to be more stubborn to remove. On a recent doctor visit i asked my doctor to check my ears again and the left ear is wax free while the right ear is still plugged. I play an electric bass in a group and it's crucial to be able to hear correctly.
I appreciated this because my ears seem to get plugged with wax more than other people I know, and I have to use peroxide based ear drops to clear the wax every few weeks. I once had not just one but two plugged ears on a night my band was playing a gig. It is hard enough to hear each other on stage even at the best of times, but that night, my hearing was so muffled it was like trying to play underwater! I got my ears syringed out shortly after that, and boy, was it sweet to be able to hear clearly again. ( and no, not too worried about the effects of amplification since we don't play amplified very often and are not a rock band.)
I have tinnitus and hearing aids are recommended. However, when I wear them, my ear canals get VERY itchy. Hence, I have used Q-tips to scratch the itch. I also find they are a bit itchy after showering….but not nearly as bad. I am my own worst enemy. I will heed your message here and will also seek out an hypoallergenic version of the hearing aid tips, if such a thing exists. Always informative. Thank you, docs.
I had an accident with Q-tips, exactly as described by the docs. I normally use them to dry my ears after showering, leaving them just inside the ear canal to absorb moisture. But one day, a door swung open and hit me, pushing the Q-tips deep into my ear and perforating my eardrum. The pain was intense - one of the worst experiences I've had, comparable to an electromyogram. Thankfully, my eardrum healed quickly. My ENT specialist inserted some paper inserts to aid the healing process, and I was fully recovered within two weeks. Despite the accident, I still use Q-tips to keep my ears dry, especially since I wear headphones for extended periods for work and need to prevent excessive moisture buildup. Lesson not learned, I guess - old habits die hard! : )
My body has always produced a lot of skin oil, ear wax etc…..after being partially ENT doctor cleaned my ears with these tiny tools and a type of vacuum….removing gross ear worm things….every ten years or so I go to him and “poof” clean ears and amazing hearing. I’m in my seventh decade….just my advice as a patient to others:)
We have this kit at the pharmacy store. There is a tiny spray box with oil and a bulb ear syringe. According to the instructions, give it a good three times spray inside your ear. Block your ear with some cotton. Let the oil work for one hour. Then remove the cotton and flush the ear with water from the bulb. Works for me.
I constantly have problems with my ears for years! I have listened to the doctors, they have told me to put vegetable or olive oil in my ears, I have put debrox, I have put peroxide, I even have flushed my ears out and they still get bocked up every 3-4 months. I have gone to the ENT 3 times for them to clean them out, but they never truly get them all the way cleaned out because the wax is all the way up on my ear drum and they don't want to get to close and accidentally hit my ear drum so they leave some in their but that's why I think this keeps happening. It's funny how you guys were talking about what has been taken out of the ear. 50 -51 years ago, when my little sister was about 2 or 3 years old, she kept digging in her ear, so when my mother brought her to our pediatric to get looked at, my mother found out that she stuck a rock in her ear. When the doctor took the rock out, they were astonished that she had pushed a rock that was a size of a quarter in her ear, and nobody could understand how in the world she got it in their 😂!!!
i had to go get one of these drop kits recently because my one ear was all blocked up and i couldn't hear properly. not sure whether the drops really did that much by themselves, but there was a warm water flush kit that came with it and that really did the trick. it was this plastic bellow thing you filled with water and squeezed into the ear. the warmer water softened the wax and it flushed right out into the sink
Years ago I had a "severe" case of wax impaction in one ear, enough that I noticed I had a hard time hearing in that ear. My PCP had his assistants drop in oil, then had me lie still for about 5 minutes until it penetrated the wax, then hosed it out. The glob of was was enormous. Repeated the procedure on the other ear, and problem solved. Since then I've hosed out each each ear every time I shower, and haven't had a repeat of the problem. Good segment.
I had a bout of vertigo ,inner ear related, according to the ENT. He did try to flush out wax with a syringe and cut my ear inside...some times the person cleaning wax does not feel the pressure or temperature the way the patient can. I will only clean my ears out myself using the rubber bulb type squirter from now on .
Thank you for the information. It is timely. I have a blocked ear now and get them if I wear ear buds too much. It's so frustrating. I'll try the oil and see if that works.
1) Shuck each ear by grabbing the base of the ear and pulling back the husk. 2) Pluck the silk, removing as much as possible. 3) Run under cold water, checking the kernels for bugs. 4) Pluck any remaining silk. (For people who were searching for your title, but were looking for a different video.)😉
Maybe 10 years ago I told my primary care doctor that I get a lot of ear wax and that I would like to have an ear doctor clean it.... he told me to go to Walgreens and buy earwax remover. Every time I used the earwax remover I had to do it several times a day, then flush it with a bulb and 3 or 4 days later I ended up with my ear being irritated or infected... such bad advice! Just last month I ended up in urgent care because after using earwax remover my ear was completely blocked. The nurse at urgent care flushed it with a spray bottle and minutes later my ear was back to normal. They suggested to have my doctors office to do the ear flushes going forward.
I no longer swim under water at public pools... First feeling a little bad tingling, taking a plane ride in spite of sent me to doc's upon arrival, Hlx' Betty Boop for the troops, Dementia Diva mom offered a warm bag of warm against my ear as "That's all they ever had"... Thank goodness for antibiotics what horrendous pain!
I’m in my third week of an ear infection and Eustachian tube dysfunction bilateral. I’m on my second round of meds, doing nasal rinse and on my last day of Afrin. Worse I’ve ever had. Loss of hearing. Hope it gets better soon.
My Dr uses lukewarm tap water to syringe the excess wax out of the ear canals. Last year I had to have my syringed, my hearing was affected quite a bit. My ear wax increases a lot after colds or Covid. I need to get them done again soon. I think it also might affect Tinnitus ❤️😊🇨🇦
I use the wax earplugs that swimmers use. They sit on top of your ear, stay put, and stop all noises. You can twist off the amount you need and press them over your ear. They won't come off while you sleep.
Thanks for posting this video my follow up question to round out the discussion on ear plugs though is if you do use ear plugs and you don't clean the ear wax out aren't you just pushing the ear wax in deeper? So if you do use ear plugs should you or should you not clean out your ear wax??? Thanks for all your videos Paul and Brad you guys are awesome :)
A while back I had an ear infection and the side of my face swelled up. Dr looked in and says "looks ok". Nothing prescribed. I then went to an ent. ENT said " looks ok". I took metal tweezers and used the handle end, scraped out substantial amounts of old, dark wax buildup from the outer ear. No problems ever again. I'll do it monthly.
I cannot tell my hubby enough times to please stop putting cotton swabs in his ear Is there such a things as Ear Police cause thats me Thank You for the great video
And the number one concern, ipods or other widely and frequently used hearing apparatus used by the throngs (especially youth)….germs, wax compaction etc.?
Ive had frequent ear infections, right now, my ear is leaking pus and sometimes blood. Ive went to urgent care and they have told me to go to an ent because i get them so frequently in the same ear.
I have an ear drum tear and I don’t know what made me have ear drum tear. Family doctor prescribed me antibiotics ear drops which I put for 7 days. I have still discomfort and pain in my right side ear. What I should do? Family doctor is saying that ENT will not be able to help me either although she has referred me to an ENT SPECIALIST And it will take many years for me to get appointment. Thanks 🙏
I had something similar after using a homeopathic product that created mould and major inflammation in my 20s. My only real solution was to take Ester C and get monthly chiropractic adjustments for my neck and circulation behind the ears. I could sleep well too. I also realized 2 years later, my pillow had a mould growth on it that was affecting my face. You can try so many alternative supports. So many people will get allergy reactions to dairy inside their ears hence the inflammation!
After I shower and wash my hair, I can feel the water inside my ears. I use Qtips and tilt my head to soak up the water, avoiding going too deep and not hitting the eardrum. I've never had a buildup of ear wax or any damage inside my ears. But a strange thing happened when I was having all the jaw surgeries. Since the incision was in front of my ears, they placed gauze in my ears to prevent blood from running into them. A few days after the surgery, I couldn't hear out of one of my ears and I felt off balance. My sister-in-law, an LVN, checked my ear and actually put some diluted peroxide in the ear. I heard it bubble in my ear but I still didn't hear outside noise. So I went to my local Oral Surgeon and he looked in my ear and I never suspected what was in there. There was still a piece of gauze from the surgery. I guess it was missed when the others were taken out after the surgery was over. He got the gauze out and I could finally hear again. My balance was also restored and everything felt so much better. I definitely wouldn't have tried to get deep enough to try to figure out what was going on. But that tiny piece of gauze affected my hearing and balance (like my gyroscope was off) and it was such a relief when it was finally out! I have so many weird things that happened after several of those surgeries. You'll probably eventually have videos on many of the weird things that have happened but they won't be caused the usual way. But my ears are just fine and the last time I saw an ENT, it wasn't for my ears, nose or throat. Go figure. Thanks for sharing another great video!👍
I produce a lot of wax. I have to have it irrigated out every once in a while. I hate it, but what's a boy to do? I've heard peroxide is a good treatment. I wish this would have been discussed in more detail.
I'm a old guy who cleans his ear with a wet Qtip maybe once a month. Because when I was little that's what my mom did. May dad had a small town hardware store and once in awhile I would see him grab a 2" ardox nail out of the box and use the head to clear his ear. I used to brag to my friends how tough my old man was because of that. Lol. Who knew it was such a big deal. Ignorance can be blitz.😊
I use Q-Tips for cleaning objects when restoring the piece. Today I am cleaning a painting with Q-Tips. I go through a lot of Q-Tios! But I don't use them for my ears! lol
I get a rediculous ammount of wax and have to semi annually swab them with Qtips. I only use Qtios because cheap cotton swabs can fall apart i side the ear.
We need a more practical solution than going to a doctor's office or "drops" for ears. I use foam ear plugs for noise and they seem to pack ear wax flat along the inside of my ear. When the wax dries out, it itches like you would not believe. So its either clean it out mechanically under somewhat controlled circumstances or I end up jamming a pencil, or something completely inappropriate, in my ear at work because it itches so bad. I need foam ear plugs. A peripheral observation is when I eat good food, excess ear wax nearly goes away. When I pile on junk food, ear wax happens more.
I must have one of those ears that gets blocked all the time because I spend a lot of time at the doctor's office getting the nurse to clean the impacted wax out. I put oil in every couple of days but the wax doesn't come out much unless I get it done at the doctor's office. Rinsing under the shower or those over the counter ear flush kits never work on me.
I have psoriasis in my ears. They itch or burn. The medicine i am given by my dermatologist when back to far when I put in and woke up and couldn't hear. Scary
I heard a story and I’ve always wondered if it was true. This guy had an ear infection in one ear, but the other ear was fine. They kept giving him antibiotics but the infection kept coming back. Finally he carefully scraped some ear wax from the healthy ear and pushed it gently into the infected ear. The natural good bacteria in the ear wax proceeded to kill the infection. Is this possible, or am I just trying to meet an old wife for a date? Second, I once had a big, hard blob of ear wax that just fell out one day. Is this normal?
I have build up about every three months or so, and I have to clear the wax out. Going to the doctor for that is way too expensive. I use hydrogen peroxide and a bulb to flush out my ears.
I'm bummed they didn't mention the hydrogen peroxide technique I saw here on RUclips: Cotton ball saturated with hydrogen peroxide, lay down and squeeze the cotton ball, wait for the sound to stop, stick the cotton ball in the ear, tip your head and let the peroxide drain out into the cotton ball. Done. The technique wasn't discussed. Oh well.
I use peroxide drops, but never thought of doing it this way. Great idea though, and I will try it. However, I follow it with a shower as it can be kinda messy, dribbling down my neck etc.
Them sticks can really freaking hurt. I mean, down on one knee "Owie!". What about using a water flosser? Hydrogen Peroxide? Olive oil has really helped me but it takes up to a week.
I use Qtips every other day, I dont have excess wax buildup but I do have Psoriasis and for whatever reason my ageing body decided that Psoriasis isnt enough of a hassle on my arms or scalp, it needed to be in my ears. I get so itchy its not funny, and rubbing alcohol on the Qtip or witch hazel makes it feel sooo good. I also use bag balm it helps soothe the maddening itch. I will never stop using Qtips. And i use a Bic lighter to burn the hair off my ears lol.
A discussion on tinnitus would be helpful!
Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For sure, and any way to relieve symptoms
YES!
YES ! The changing of the "tone" is annoying.
It certainly would be a great segment!

Great topic! Since we are on ENT now, are you going to discuss Neti pot?
Ha it’s on the list

No. Unless the candles are made of olive or castor oil or peroxide
Good topic!

If you have excessive ear wax then ear plugs are probably not a good idea as they have the potential to push the ear wax further into your ears.
So the short answer is that it’s probably ok because they don’t go far enough in to push the wax in too far and it will make its way out
A while back I had an ear infection and the side of my face swelled up. Dr looked in and says "looks ok". Nothing prescribed. I then went to an ent. ENT said " looks ok".

Oh wow good luck
I have an ear drum tear and I don’t know what made me have ear drum tear.
Family doctor prescribed me antibiotics ear drops which I put for 7 days. I have still discomfort and pain in my right side ear. What I should do? Family doctor is saying that ENT will not be able to help me either although she has referred me to an ENT SPECIALIST And it will take many years for me to get appointment. Thanks 🙏
It often takes time for the eardrum to heal. Good luck
Any suggestions for hearing loss from a virus almost 6 years ago?!! I had to get hearing aids which are a pain in the ass!!😢
Sorry to hear that. For many types of hearing loss it is irreversible. Best to chat with your doctor
That’s hilarious
I use a small bit of cotton batten to keep the oil in the ear so no leakage.
Good advice thanks
I use Q-Tips for cleaning objects when restoring the piece. Today I am cleaning a painting with Q-Tips. I go through a lot of Q-Tios! But I don't use them for my ears! lol
Yes they are versatile!
For me I don't have excess wax . . . It migrates out fine. My problem is with significant itching in my ears. Not sure what to do about it.
Seems to be a common question.
I would like to know if excessive use of bluetooth technology is the reason of my decreasing hearing.
There is no evidence for that currently. Most common is age related loss and excessive volume or damage from loud noise
Any wisdom for people who wear hearing aids?
I get a rediculous ammount of wax and have to semi annually swab them with Qtips. I only use Qtios because cheap cotton swabs can fall apart i side the ear.
Yes the generic ones are all stick
You never mentioned OTC ear irrigation products and whether they are they safe or effective?
When I was a child, my mother put two maggots in each ear canal. 15 minutes later my ears were spotless!
How do you relieve ear itch without qtip?
thanks so much for this info... i will never again use cotton swabs to clean my ears... who knew...?
Thank you.
You're welcome!
What about in ear canal hearing aids - they have wa guards but having to go to specialists who these day suck ear wax out of the canal
Interesting
You missed a joke. Ear of corn.
Yes we did miss that!
There is a product (bebird) with a small scoop and camera that I use. I can see how far to insert on the screen of my mobile phone.
Thats what I use - by far the most effective solution but you have to do it carefully
Very cool
Real question is how do you clear the Eustation tube ?
Can wearing ear set cause infection in the ear canal?
How about air pods? Are they safe? I can’t use them because they irritate my ear.
They don’t go into the canal so in that way they are safe but they can put an unsafe volume into your ears
I have psoriasis in my ears. They itch or burn. The medicine i am given by my dermatologist when back to far when I put in and woke up and couldn't hear. Scary
That is scary
I heard a story and I’ve always wondered if it was true. This guy had an ear infection in one ear, but the other ear was fine. They kept giving him antibiotics but the infection kept coming back. Finally he carefully scraped some ear wax from the healthy ear and pushed it gently into the infected ear. The natural good bacteria in the ear wax proceeded to kill the infection. Is this possible, or am I just trying to meet an old wife for a date?
Second, I once had a big, hard blob of ear wax that just fell out one day. Is this normal?
For number one never heard of that. Number two yes that can happen.
I use peroxide in my ears
Yes this is one of the liquids used for softening
wax ear plugs are the best...from my experience, they do not go deep and work extremely well against loud noise and stay in place very well.
Thanks for the tip!
Where can you buy them?
@@mrslcom many places on line, including amazon
When you have a itch can you put your pinky finger ?
What are you supposed to do if you get a pimple in your ear?
Usually they are self limiting. Try to leave it alone
What do you do if the inside of your ear itches? How do you stop it without putting something in your ear?
Try to distract yourself is best advice.
Don't get it washed out, I know of a few older people where it damaged their hearing.
It needs to be done very carefully
I have build up about every three months or so, and I have to clear the wax out. Going to the doctor for that is way too expensive. I use hydrogen peroxide and a bulb to flush out my ears.
Just be careful with the self irrigation. Good luck
The best thing is a good shower with soap!!!! Then Q-tips!!!!! Has worked for me over 60 years!!!!!! No doc needed.
Be careful!
What about swimmers ear?
I'm bummed they didn't mention the hydrogen peroxide technique I saw here on RUclips:
Cotton ball saturated with hydrogen peroxide, lay down and squeeze the cotton ball, wait for the sound to stop, stick the cotton ball in the ear, tip your head and let the peroxide drain out into the cotton ball. Done.
The technique wasn't discussed. Oh well.
I use peroxide drops, but never thought of doing it this way. Great idea though, and I will try it. However, I follow it with a shower as it can be kinda messy, dribbling down my neck etc.
Yes that’s a good way to do it. We only have so much time ! 😀
Thank you Drs. 😊
Welcome 😊
I can put the q tip all the way in. No resistance. I don’t think that is good.
It’s not good. And it’s dangerous
Them sticks can really freaking hurt. I mean, down on one knee "Owie!".
What about using a water flosser? Hydrogen Peroxide?
Olive oil has really helped me but it takes up to a week.
What about hearing aids?
Yes they don’t go all the way in but fair enough
@ do they create more wax?
I had to stop wearing my hearing aid because it got too wet in my ear!
How about hearing aids
Yes they are ok.
What about the old wives tale of sticking a garlic clove in the ear? I guess it could get stuck. But does it work? Anyone tried this?
Never heard of that. Garlic is very good for you
I’ve seen people use a Bobby pin😫
That is crazy
This is a great guest - because she got a sense of humour. If you are going to have a guest pick one with a sense of humour. (Please)
We try!
Your family doc is going to have a MA clean your ear and the first thing they are going to reach for is a Qtip.
Yes. Happened to me
Wow that’s nuts
It is so difficult for me to not stick cotton swabs in my ears because they itch so much!
And heat the liquid before you put it in your ears because cold fluids can cause vomiting.
Ok Kids. Make sure you brush your teeth before bed and don’t forget to oil your ears.
Hydrogen peroxide works really well for me: loosens the plug of hardened wax so I can irrigate it out with one of those little plastic bulbs
🤣
