This song is 40 years old and it never sounds out dated.
The bass line by the late John Entwistle is amazing
Pete Townshend, the lead guitarist who wrote most of their songs, on awesome lead and I believe keyboards. One of the best latter day Who's.
The "Eminence Front" is the opposite of "Keeping it Real" ..... Drugs or alcohol do not need to be involved.
I LOVED the original (non-lyric) video that was released with the song. That video had the band in a stadium, during set-up and sound-check. The music starts playing on a reel-to-reel tape player, the drums get adjusted, Roger Daltry walks out of a limo and onto the stage, and then Pete Townsend steps-up to the mic. That video footage really enhance the song for me!
That Bass though.... R.I.P. John Entwistle. One of the best to ever do it!
This was the song playing first time I realized I was high. And I was riding in the back seat of my parents car, Christmas Eve. That bass took me to another world.
I would never say...here's The Who !...if it were not for the singer, I would say...here's Talking Heads.....good song, anyway.
I'm 56, heard it a million times, Townshend wrote it. He's a handful, but from my years of "studying him" I think and know he lives his life on his sleeve and hates fake and phony people. So maybe it's a song about those types he despises. IDK.
This song is a powerhouse, impeccable timing, thunderous arrangement,Entwhistle booms through space and time
You never heard the term “dressed to kill”? It means totally decked out. Dressed to impress.
Worked with this group several times. Had a party at the promoters house I worked for for them, even brought in pin ball machines.
A put on is an attempt to deceive. "You're putting me on!" is what you might say to someone who you think just lied to you. An eminence front is a put on of greatness for yourself that you want others to see, but in reality it's all fake. It's just a front.

FINALLY!...There's so much music out there you ain't even touched.
Some reason I was obsessed with this song when it came out. I think it was the repetitive riff, it hypnotized me i think.🤣😂
‘Fronting’ is slang for ‘putting on’ a false persona, not showing real self.
1982 live from Toronto Is the best live performance of this song I’ve seen them do and I’ve been to over 30 Who shows since 1979. Love this group
Pete Townsend is a songwriter extraordinaire! In my top five songwriters of our generation. He has a really nice share of solo work that is outstanding, as well. A "put on" is basically fake, often was used in the context of "you're putting me on" same as "yanking my chain".
