    The old model and the new model P790's are... in my opinion.... the best irons Taylormade has ever made.

    Haven’t hit the 2019 model but just bought a set to replace my 2017 versions based on your reviews.
    The sound alone is so much more appealing to me let alone the chrome finish.
    Great videos.

    I tried a whole lot of clubs including blades and found these the best for looks, blade feel, consistent distance, loft, spin rate and minimal distance post carry so they are now in my bag.

    Thank you for this video. I just bought a p790 7i demo club with a couple of different shaft options. I’m a golfer whose been playing mp60s since 2007 and have always loved the feedback that I get from these clubs. I was however curious about these modern ‘power’ irons and so I bought a single p790. The first obvious thing to say is that the lofts are reallly strong. I’d say 4 or 5 degrees more than my mp60s. So the distance gain is not unexpected. Begs the question of why clubs still have these numbers in them. They should just display lofts like wedges do. What kind of shocked me was how off centre hits still carry a decent distance with the p790s. In forgiveness there is literally no comparison. However, I have to say that I won’t be changing clubs. I’ve become so used to the thinner top line and much lighter club head of the mp60 that I see the p790 as a hybrid. I wouldn’t call it an iron. Also, compared to mp60s, there is very little feel. The p790 is supposed to have a forged face, but I genuinely do not get any sensation from it after a pure strike whilst with the mp60 it feels.. I can only describe it as buttery.

    Great review! These are awesome irons. Hit the demo a bunch in golf shop. IMO they feel softer, feel better than 2017 model. They look better at the ball. Beautiful irons! Dynamic gold 105 now equipped with VSS which helps with vibration and feel, nice kick to this shaft. Taylormade nailed it again with these. Taylormade rep was in shop when I demoed, I was able to order on the spot through him. Can’t wait!

    I just sold my new P770's for the P790's. I had the P790's before but saw the 770's and had to have them. I much prefer the P790's to the 770's. More forgiveness and more fun to hit.

    You have asked what we are looking for in an iron...I have had several different sets...Adam's tight lies, Wilson D9, KZG cavity backs, Callaway Big Bertha, Pinhawk single length and cobra S9. If I had to choose the 3 that I loved it would be cobra S9 (what I am going back to), Wilson D9 ( really great irons for the value) and Pinhawks Single length (great irons but you have to be really aware of ball flight and roll out with each iron).

  • @alysgolfstudio567
    @alysgolfstudio567 5 лет назад +1

    Interesting. After trying many brands and models I ditched the p790 previous version which I found inconsistent for me and not that much feel for the p760s which I currently game and love and largely doing very well with. If this set is a real improvement especially on feel and consistency then I think they will go a long way to be liked by both those looking for players irons or players distance irons. Of course the titleists are now out also....

    I like the new looks. I think it's slightly more streamlined. The complaints I had of the original version were it was a bit hard off of the face and some approach shots came in as low fliers. It seems like they're onto something here. Nice review mate.

    To my eye the old P790s were great looking clubs but possibly marginally too large, so if the new version is slightly smaller that would be a great change for me. The dry ball data is impressive - long AND good spin rates. TM have a winner.

  • @jackhall1575
    @jackhall1575 5 лет назад

    IMHO, the prime requirement for a 9 iron is - more often than not - you can successfully target and hit the general area of the pin, not just hit-and-hope at the centre of the green. Some of the 9iron shots recorded in this review would have likely missed the entire green. And if your 9 iron averages 145 yards carry, how many wedges does a recreational golfer need to span 135 down to 75 yards? E.G., 135, 125, 115, 105, 90 & 75... er... 6 wedges? Most of the distance increases in these new TM clubs comes from grossly jacked-up lofts; so buyers are being sold BS distance increases. You can get more or less the same distance “increase” per club - from any set of clubs - by renumbering them: the 7 iron becomes the 9 iron, 5 becomes 7, a 3 iron becomes the 5 iron, etc. That’s basically what TM and other manufacturers are doing - leaving a big gap at the bottom end to be filled by yet more wedges. I won’t be buying.

    • @TheAverageGolfer
      @TheAverageGolfer  5 лет назад

      You reference what TM are doing? Are you suggesting that a 30* 7 iron is pretty much standard in most manufacturers iron offerings?

      I noticed that as well (you could see it without looking at readings). Honestly, I think those big side numbers are a combo of his swing and club specs. He does seem to have a bit of an over the top move on his downswing. I just demo'd these clubs last weekend and from the numbers we found this is a club you definitely should get fully fitted for and not buy as-is, off the shelf (it amazes me how many people do that or buy online using fitting numbers from a previous fitting for a completely different set). My guess is these are just demo clubs a rep sent him to try out, and may not be fitted to him. These produce faster speeds (definitely faster than my current clubs) and so the clubs need to be adjusted accordingly. For example, I am usually a regular flex, std length, +2. My fitting for these showed I needed the 105 shaft but in stiff, still +2, and although I am sticking with std length, they recommended a 1/2 shorter (I just didn't like the feel of that).
