Years ago I took stock of what clubs I never use or seldom use. I play with a driver, 5 wood, 5 iron, 7 iron, 9 iron, pitching wedge , and a putter. The bag is so much lighter and I usually score 88 on a good day 110 on a bad day. Same as I did lugging 14 clubs around. 😊

I used to have a very small/lightweight Sunday bag I would use for winter golf in Texas, when I used it, I only put 8 golf clubs in it comfortably, and I enjoyed the hell out of it, 45 degrees and sunny, walking to stay warm, shot a 65 with that setup, still my lowest round ever!⛳⛳

All my youth golf was played with a half set, pretty normal back in those days. Normally 3w & 4w or 3i, then 5i, 7i, 9i, W and putter . You’re right about getting used to fewer clubs and using them in a number of different ways, Andy, I used to play against my then retired great uncle, he had even fewer clubs, and was tough to beat. I remember asking him why he didn’t carry a sand wedge, his response…”I don’t go in bunkers”, and he never did! Mostly 3w, 7i and putter for him. Saw him get a slam dunk hole-in-one with the 7i. Beat me frequently at snooker in the clubhouse afterwards too. Bloody annoying all round, but a great character. 😂 Photo comp….Andy B for me this week.
After watching this video, I played seven clubs today. Driver, putter, hybrid, 6, 8, 54, PW. Scored a 79, which is one under my average! Didn't miss the other clubs - not once. I'm going to play these same clubs several more rounds to see if it will become my new normal. Surely lighten the bag, better control of each club, and more focus on the course. I never even thought of using less than the standard 14 and want to thank you for bringing this to the masses as an alternative. And probably BETTER alternative 😀

Watched the video. Played a short course 5400 yds, driver, 22 degree hybrid, 6,8, wedge, 54 degree, putter. Shot 79 with 3- 3 putts. 71 years old 14 handicap. Great idea. Will try different clubs next time. Rochester NY
Thanks for that! I am right with you. Walking with 8 clubs currently. Only differences are 7 wood not hybrid and 56 not 54 plus carrying 8 with 3 wood!
I throw the whole bag on the push cart on the weekends but grab the lite bag with 7 or 8 clubs when I hop out on the course for a few holes in the evening. Scoring never changes. Lots of pars. A few bogies and birdies. Much less decision making with the partial set. Just playing the shots. It's fun! And I agree. Most new golfers should play a partial set and hit the clubs that they can hit well. Cheers Andy and Tracy!
What a wonderful video! I have already eliminated 3 clubs after watching. 4Hy 6Hy 60 wedge. So I'm down to 11: Driver, FW3, 3Hy, 5Hy, 7i, 8i, 9i, PW, 52, 56, P. FW3 when I need driving accuracy or long Par 5's, 3HY for distance from rough, 5Hy controlled distance or long par 3's, Then the gaps get closer as I approach the green; 7,8,9,PW. I can carry a light bag and I play better. You saved me because my choices are now MUCH less complicated \ o /, Thank You!
Confidence is truly the key. This season had some of my best rounds and some of my worst in years. The worst were when my driver wasn’t working which caused me to go into a funk with my other clubs because I was always trying hero shots to save pars or bogeys. Taking clubs out of your bag can help save you mentally and allow you to reset yourself on the range.
What a great video documenting how well you can play with far less than 14 clubs. Supposed to play tomorrow - think I will trim the bag down to the 7 you noted here - D, 4h, 6i, 8i, Pw, 54deg and Putter. Should be a fun day...
Wonderful video and property and even better advice! I play most of my golf with 5-7 clubs carried in a Sunday bag and it's so much more fun and enjoyable.
I mean this sincerely, you are proof how solidly you hit the ball with an inside takeaway and very slightly over the top move at the top. It gets you in an outstanding position. I could watch your swing all day long!
I've stayed at Linden Hall 6 times , playing 3 rounds of golf on my favourite course. The hotel is really good as well and close to Beadnell and the coastal beaches.
This is so true Andy. Like many clubs we (London Scottish Golf Club) have a 4 clubs competition every year. Scores are frequently the same, and in many cases better, than when people are allowed 14! I love to carry but im getting older, so carying 9 clubs works perfectly.
Yes. It would be interesting if you put a comp. together. It’s very dependant on the location of course. I am located in the North West. Thank you Andy.
Thank you for another great episode, Andy. Now I am going to review my golf bag and remove a few clubs temporarily to see if anything changes in my scoring. As for the photo choices I selected the following: Andy A, B D F, Tracy C, E
Another pretty place and a great video. When I was young it was popular to have a half set wig 1&3 woods and then 3-5-7-9 and putter. That’s all I had and was quite comfortable with it. Time to go back to it. As far as favorite photos. I’d vote for Andy B. Thank you for taking us to this place
Had 2 blow up holes early on back 9 yesterday so on next hole (par 5) I used my 4H on several consecutive shots given confidence with that club and pulled back on my approach shot. Must have regained confidence and subsequently went on a wild run with birdies on 3 of next 4 holes. Ended up with personal best that round. Golfing three years and still a high handicapper but shooting 42 on back 9 despite the two blow up holes was a massive improvement for me (just got into high 90s at start of this year). Anyways, great video and have been contemplating just 7 clubs in the bag past few months. Look forward to testing this out soon for several rounds and then swap some clubs to improve versatility with individual clubs. Thanks for doing this video!
When I got my first set of clubs, the set only had Driver, 3 Wood, 3, 5, 7, 9 irons and putter. I played fine with them as it was easier to figure what club to hit. Congrats on 100,000 subscribers!
Looooksury. My first set was 2w, 3,5,7 and putter and the two wood was a simple block of wood without even a base plate or plastic insert. Yes, I'm that old.
I use Driver, 5 Wood, 4 and 6 Hybrids, 8 Iron, Sand and Pitching wedges and Putter. Been doing it this way for several years. I'm 70 years old and shoot to an 8.5 index.
As a -5.2 handicap I've been carrying Driver, 7w, 5i, 7i, 9i, GW, 56, and putter for the last two seasons and it has made a massive difference in my game. I have to get more creative with some scramble shots and it makes clubs choice so much easier. I've gotten a couple of my mid/high handicap friends to eliminate some clubs from their bags and their scores have gotten better and the rounds are more enjoyable for them. Great video and looking forward to more content from you.
I have 9 Clubs in the bag. Basically same as you. No 6 iron (I have another hybrid for that) + a 60 degree wedge. I agree 100% those less clubs you use, you really have 100% of confidence and able to manufacture shot shapes
It is so coincidental that you did this video. I was thinking about this exactly just to save money on clubs. When I was a kid even adults generally only carried limited irons. As I recall 9, 7, 5 driver, fairway wood (real woods) and a putter.
Good video. This is how I started. We would pick the odds or the evens. I usually carry 14, but at least every 3rd trip I usually play the odds or the evens.
Your swing's looking good, Andy. My pick for the best photo is andy d. And my 7 club selection is D 3H 5H 7I 9I GW 58 P in a Sunday bag. After watching this video I think I'll choose that option more often!
My small bag is pretty much same as yours, except I carry 16.5 degree 4 wood instead of driver as I can use it off the tee and the fairway; beyond that, its: 4 hybrid, 6 and 8 irons, pitching wedge, and 54 degree sand wedge. I will typically play a course length of 6,300 - 6,500 yards. I am a 62 year old, 6 handicap and what's interesting is that I will frequently break 80 more often than when I carry all 14 clubs in the bag. Also, tossed my 3-wood and driver has been misbehaving, but found that I don't really miss or need either club!
I agree with your 7 club usage, especially if you know the course. Many of the courses I play we push our carts but have noticed that my bag I heavy. Taking out clubs you may not use may have multiple benefits.
I’ve recently been thinking about exactly the same thing, and what I’ll likely be carrying in a pencil bag for 9 holes in the evening or Winter games. I came to the conclusion of D, 4h as it’s around 4-5i distance but higher flight, 6i, 8i, 46 degrees PW which doubles up for chips around green, 56 hi toe SW for everything else, and putter. As soon as you pulled out the 6i, I realised that’s pretty much what you’d be going for too. I’m quite excited just to go and try this for normal rounds too, as you say, getting to learn what you can do with the clubs you have when there is gap to bridge.
I started playing 3 years ago. I'm 53. I learned right away keeping it simple is the way. My used bag set up is a 15* "Auto Pilot" instead of driver. 5 hy, 6, 8, PW, 56* wedge and putter. I shoot in the 90s which is well enough to play with friends.
Great video very inspiring no nonsense advice. Please can you share the make and model of the clubs used. I am a happy subscriber to your channel and enjoy all your videos. Keep up the good work.
some grerat advice there Andy... I took out my 4 iron out he bag as i was always goiing right with it to varying degrees.. regarding the golf days, maybe a tie in with macdonald hotels and then it makes it easier to organise and for ppl to stay.... for the Average Golfers UK tour championship
@@TheAverageGolfer I’m a firm believer and advocate for it. I’d love to see a lot more people try it. 7 clubs and move up a tee to have fun. Make things more enjoyable.
Great video Andy. I often play with a half set or a few random clubs during the winter months when its carry on and you certainly have to get more creative and it definitely helps a lot.
For several years now I am have been playing with a driver, 3&5 hybrids, 6,8, PW, SW hybrid irons and putter. I push them around in a trolley, often I am the only person on the course not using a motorized cart. Currently playing to a 12.6 index.
Indeed, preaching to the converted here. I no longer carry more than eight clubs and I can actually "golf" with so few, creating shots, taking a little off, change of angle or swing to give different distances. The proof is there; three out of my last four scores are "green" on the WHC / Scottish golf. I'll keep an eye out for any events organised for next year. " Play well "
Hi Andy. Great message to us all. I had the pleasure to play in 2 of your "Average Golfer Golf Days" at Conwy Golf Club a few years ago when I lived in the West Midlands - both were great days oit and very enjoyable. Well done in hitting the 100k subscribers. Not surprised with the great content of your videos. Keep them coming, good food for thought in reducing clubs to better your golf. Thanks 😊
Andy B for the pictures, I do like parkland courses as the trees can give a bit of protection to the wind. I tend to use most of the clubs in my bag 14 but would guess the 58 deg wedge is the least used and yes I could easily take it down to 7 clubs which is almost the old half sets many of us started with. Would guess the manufacturers would be a bit oeeved if we suddenly all started buying only 3 irons from a set
Eh Up Andy - the course looks fabulous, parkland courses with undulating fairways and greens are always interesting and challenging, thanks for sharing with us Garry B in Manchester UK
Hi Andy, Great video again and yes a lot to be said for carrying only 7/8 clubs and we would learn to play them a lot better. I would definitely be interested in playing in an event organised by you and up in Scotland would be even better.🤙
Very interesting that you favour the even-numbered clubs here (4h, 6i, 8i, PW). When I started playing golf as a kid, my brother and I shared a full set - he got the odd-numbered clubs (1w, 3w, 3, 5, 7, 9), while I got the even-numbered clubs (2w, 4, 6, 8, PW). Still to this day (some 50+ years later), I still go to the even-numbered clubs when I am in trouble and need confidence to hit a good shot . . .
i love to carry and 7 clubs is ideal, great to do thing in the early morning or evenings when the course is quietist. Would love to get involved in a day out with you, we had a great time at Conwy a few years back. Tracey pulls it out of the bag with F. Great work as ever. Cheers Gary.
I would surely be interested in playing with you at an event! Sounds amazing! Just a short trip from over in the Netherlands. I am actually travelling to Canterbury next week, to play golf. My only dread is driving on the left side!
Decades ago we would occasionally walk 9 holes carrying a pre-decided # of clubs and play a little match w. cheap booze afterwards of course (or during play). It started with only one club (I would choose the 5 iron because that is how Seve and I learned to play) ::), but we also did it with 2,3, and 4 clubs. It is remarkable what you can do with a 5 iron. I think everyone should have some sort of utility club in the bag for a number of reasons...these days it would be the 5 wood for me for when i am walking and dont want to carry so many clubs. I;m with you on not needing a bag full of wedges..For me it is PW, 52, and 58. Props to you on a great idea for a RUclips, combining golf with travel to great golf courses off the beaten path
Another great video Andy!! Love how you can tie in an awesome course and a great tip in the same video! Thinking of trying this next time. Oh, and I think Andy edges out the photo this week.
I’ll say it again you are WAY better than an average golfer.I play Linden hall regularly and off the white tees I have never shot 3 over par.By the way I play off 4.Remind me never to play against you off handicap. If you organise a comp in Northumberland I would play in it just to get your average autograph 😅
Golf day sounds great Andy I’d definitely be interested. If you’re planning on hosting in the coming months please get a venue anything close to Holywell for winter golf, what a course in winter. No temp greens, no temp tees, I always call it ‘the marine’ of golf courses, can cope with anything 😂
Another fantastic video. How are you finding the Denali blue shaft I’d love to hear more about it. I’m currently looking at it for my driver and woods. Keep it up.
Use a full set around 10 to 12 yards difference each club , a few courses in play a club suits a particular hole and I hit it well on the hole , do sometimes go out with a driver 7 iron pw and 58, putter
It is true we only use certain clubs regularly. For me, Driver, 5 hybrid, 7, 8, 9, Sand Wedge & Putter if I was pushed. And yes I’d be interested in playing some courses if you organised it.
Congrats on 100k Andy 🎉.. I take full set and trolley if going away with mates for a trip, otherwise I use stand bag or Sunday bag and odds or evens as I call ‘em. Driver, 5 wood, 4 hybrid, 6 iron, 8 iron, PW, AW, 56 & Putter (9 clubs) .. I find biggest drawback to playing ‘lite’ is how many balls to take and waterproofs!
Good advice. I took a hard look at my game and dwindling drive yardage then spent a summer dialing in my fairway woods. Also went to one wedge. I practice multiple distances with each club. Really nails down my feel with each. Adding a 7 wood has saved me many times.
Congrats on the 100k subs. Will have to try reducing my clubs. Great course again. Love the idea of a pub available. Would defo be interested in a round. Tracy b this week

This is so true Andy. Like many clubs we (London Scottish Golf Club) have a 4 clubs competition every year. Scores are frequently the same, and in many cases better, than when people are allowed 14!
I love to carry but im getting older, so carying 9 clubs works perfectly.
I did this today. Stripped out 7 clubs and was on for my best round before the sunset. Def can see the pros of this
your bang on here, yesterday i had my best round ever of 75 and i only took, 7,9 iron, 54,60 wedge, a hybrid, 3 wood a driver , and obviously a putter
Yes. It would be interesting if you put a comp. together. It’s very dependant on the location of course. I am located in the North West. Thank you Andy.
I will update you soon
Thank you for another great episode, Andy. Now I am going to review my golf bag and remove a few clubs temporarily to see if anything changes in my scoring.
As for the photo choices I selected the following: Andy A, B D F, Tracy C, E
Another pretty place and a great video. When I was young it was popular to have a half set wig 1&3 woods and then 3-5-7-9 and putter. That’s all I had and was quite comfortable with it. Time to go back to it. As far as favorite photos. I’d vote for Andy B. Thank you for taking us to this place
Thanks Terry
My thoughts on pairing down my bag...2w, 5w, 4H, 7i, 9i, PW, 54*, Chipper, Putter. These were my most used clubs my last round.
Stayed at linden hall last year for 2 days golfing with a society group…highly recommended lovely venue
When I got my first set of clubs, the set only had Driver, 3 Wood, 3, 5, 7, 9 irons and putter. I played fine with them as it was easier to figure what club to hit. Congrats on 100,000 subscribers!
Thanks 🙏
Loved this Video. Love a half set
Thanks, can beat a Sunday bag
It is so coincidental that you did this video. I was thinking about this exactly just to save money on clubs. When I was a kid even adults generally only carried limited irons. As I recall 9, 7, 5 driver, fairway wood (real woods) and a putter.
Yes I was the same
Good video. This is how I started. We would pick the odds or the evens. I usually carry 14, but at least every 3rd trip I usually play the odds or the evens.
Yep and me
Your swing's looking good, Andy. My pick for the best photo is andy d. And my 7 club selection is D 3H 5H 7I 9I GW 58 P in a Sunday bag. After watching this video I think I'll choose that option more often!
Oops - that's 8 clubs😳
Give it a try someday
100% Agree an have for past 5 years on Very tight tree linedcourse here in NSW AUSTRALIA. 9i 8i Sw 3wood as driver 9hybrid, 5hybrid, putter
Congrats on 100k… great content!
Congrats Andy on 100K!!🔥🔥
When I first took up golf. It was common to buy half sets of clubs. I know in my 14 clubs there are at least 4 or 5 I hardly ever use.
Wonderful content. I made this switch last year to 7 clubs full time. I love it. Trying to convert more of my friends. 😊
Its surprising how well it works
@@TheAverageGolfer I’m a firm believer and advocate for it. I’d love to see a lot more people try it. 7 clubs and move up a tee to have fun. Make things more enjoyable.
Would love to play some of your recommendations in the UK. Please do organize it.
Great video Andy. I often play with a half set or a few random clubs during the winter months when its carry on and you certainly have to get more creative and it definitely helps a lot.
Yes being more creative is good for your game
What a lovely looking course
100 per cent, look into booking one of the courses, I’m very keen to take part, it’s always great to play a new course, keep up the good work, Darran
For several years now I am have been playing with a driver, 3&5 hybrids, 6,8, PW, SW hybrid irons and putter. I push them around in a trolley, often I am the only person on the course not using a motorized cart. Currently playing to a 12.6 index.
Congrats on 100K! Lots of great content.
Thanks 🙏
I'm now living in Aberdeen and am a member at the fantastic Murcar Links Golf Club. I would love to play in another Average Golfers golf day if you were to arrange one in Scotland.
Keep the videos coming!!
David
Totally agree Andy, I love taking off speed or adding to make a club go the distance I need. Congratulations on your 100,000 subs. About time IMO you've had a fantastic relatable channel for years now. Would absolutely love to join up for a golf meet up. Count me in, looking forward to taking a day off for golf.
Well done in hitting the 100k subscribers. Not surprised with the great content of your videos. Keep them coming, good food for thought in reducing clubs to better your golf. Thanks 😊
Thank you very much!
Striking the ball well Andy. Must try that half bag one day. Tracy A this week as I liked the composition of that shot.
I really enjoyed this video, Andy, so I've decided to subscribe. I'm looking forward to being part of your community.
Eh Up Andy - the course looks fabulous, parkland courses with undulating fairways and greens are always interesting and challenging, thanks for sharing with us
Garry B in Manchester UK
Eh up Gary…course was superb mate 👍
Congratulations On 100k subscribers Andy, well deserved
Thanks for support Gareth
Andy B if I'm carrying the bag I would reduce the number clubs. You will always work it out. Excellent video 👍
@@TonyMc743 it’s funny how you can make a club work
Hi Andy, Great video again and yes a lot to be said for carrying only 7/8 clubs and we would learn to play them a lot better. I would definitely be interested in playing in an event organised by you and up in Scotland would be even better.🤙
You do get to play some wonderful courses all due to your hard work, Andy B for me this week
Still to this day (some 50+ years later), I still go to the even-numbered clubs when I am in trouble and need confidence to hit a good shot . . .
Its so interesting how the mind works but your confidence was built with the even numbers, crazy
Fantastic video, loved that you featured Linden, my club, good to have a chat with you in the car park ( Gary Pallister), it is a hidden gem.
another great vlog. Your level of subscribers shows the quality of your output 👍
Cheers Stephen
i love to carry and 7 clubs is ideal, great to do thing in the early morning or evenings when the course is quietist.
Thats great to hear, good luck with the driving, on course and off
What wonderful advice...play clubs you are good or comfortable with.
Thats the key message here
Decades ago we would occasionally walk 9 holes carrying a pre-decided # of clubs and play a little match w. cheap booze afterwards of course (or during play).
Thanks for your feedback and the Seve reference, I love trying to play shots I am not good enough to execute but like to be Seve for a short while!
@@TheAverageGolferit was a 4 iron Seve learned to use on a beach. There is film of him playing out of a bunker, short sided, with 4 iron.
Another great video Andy!! Love how you can tie in an awesome course and a great tip in the same video! Thinking of trying this next time. Oh, and I think Andy edges out the photo this week.
Congrats on 100k, I've been watching since close to the beginning.
Thanks for the long term support
I’ll say it again you are WAY better than an average golfer.I play Linden hall regularly and off the white tees I have never shot 3 over par.By the way I play off 4.Remind me never to play against you off handicap. If you organise a comp in Northumberland I would play in it just to get your average autograph 😅
Loving the content ❤
Golf day sounds great Andy I’d definitely be interested.
If you’re planning on hosting in the coming months please get a venue anything close to Holywell for winter golf, what a course in winter. No temp greens, no temp tees, I always call it ‘the marine’ of golf courses, can cope with anything 😂
I think it will be next year
@@TheAverageGolfer come on Andy. Leasowe with our Santa hats on 😂

@@TheAverageGolfer get it on
Another hidden gem Andy congratulations on the 100k subscribers I'm from Northern Ireland but wouldn't mind traveling as long as not too expensive
Thanks and it would be great to have you over, lets see where this goes
Another fantastic video. How are you finding the Denali blue shaft I’d love to hear more about it. I’m currently looking at it for my driver and woods. Keep it up.
Use a full set around 10 to 12 yards difference each club , a few courses in play a club suits a particular hole and I hit it well on the hole , do sometimes go out with a driver 7 iron pw and 58, putter
Andy b! Congrats on 100K 🎉🎉
Cheers Alan
Lovely, enjoyed the video.👍🍻
Recently starting playing golf with the package set of wilson rx tours and was thinking about if i need more wedges 😅
It is true we only use certain clubs regularly. For me, Driver, 5 hybrid, 7, 8, 9, Sand Wedge & Putter if I was pushed. And yes I’d be interested in playing some courses if you organised it.
Played a links course here in Oz this morning and used 6,8,pw,9wd, driver and putter
Play ok?
@@TheAverageGolfer Yes mate, hard and fast, so even miss hits do the job, as long as they're straight of course
Luckily played it a. Couple of times, really enjoyable experience was always well kept.
Good video I used 7 or clubs for winter golf when I need to carry them
I bet it worked out ok?

Very little if any difference in my scores playing a half set instead of the full 14. Looks a lovely course 👍
Sounds like a great plan
Yes Andy I would join an event if you were hosting. A half set of clubs is all an amateur needs and makes it more fun
thank you. wil lgive it a try.
Congrats on the 100k subs. Will have to try reducing my clubs. Great course again. Love the idea of a pub available. Would defo be interested in a round. Tracy b this week
See ya Thursday
As a senior golfer, playing from the senior tees makes it easier to carry less clubs 👍
