One of the coolest and lesser known stories about the "Yacht-Master" Imagine what it could have been if the design remained true to the original? I also highly recommend checking out the background to "Singer Dials" and how many of these great Prototypes were rejected: rolexpassionreport.com/6111/the-story-about-rolex-prototypes-of-dial-maker-singer/
Thank you George! I really enjoyed the little bit of investigating that went into the background of this machine. Goes to show that sometimes the first ideas aren't the best 😆🥃
Really enjoyed this video, great content on the tie up with Singer. 20-15 years ago my boss was buying Rolex's at discount....two reasons as he would gift them to staff who had completed tours in war zones. The second, a bit more complicated as they were a source of back up cash in places which that was difficult to obtain...standard Explorer was 5k USD on your wrist!! I bartered mine a few times to get out of dodge safely!! Dodgy work and dodgy solutions lol. Keep up the good work young man, keeps an old rogue happy!!
I enjoyed this video immensely. I had no previous knowledge of these prototypes and you're absolutely right, what a shame they did not pursue these innovative designs.. Thank you once again for opening the eyes of the uninformed (me included) 🥃
Always a pleasure to share these oddities m'boy! I found it and thought "man, people should know about this backstory" 😉 Hope you're keeping well and enjoying some cool weather on the other side of the world for a change! 🥃
@@ID-Guy its a very interesting story. The company still exists today but was renamed to La Joux Perret. They supply a wide variety brands, from Arnold & Son to microbrands like Zelos.
A pleasure to share! And it's such a great history. I so wish there was more info available to us easily (I'd love to know the other brands that actually accepted Singer concepts for their watches 🥃)
Amazing video. I don’t learn that much from watch videos these days (after 30+ years in the game) but this was enlightening. Still won’t ever be able to get a Daytona! 🤷🏽♂️
This sort of comment is the reason why I made the clip. Thank you brother! You and me both though, owning a Daytona is out the window 😆 The beauty is there are far cooler watches out there to be found (that nobody looks at) 🥃
You are a horology historian and researcher treasure trove. Another fabulous presentation. I constantly learn from your efforts. Hope all is well with you!
Thank you so much Reed. I had such a good time piecing it together (I know it'll not be a mainstream subject but sometimes it's all about the passion 😉) Really means a lot to have your work appreciated, sir. Thank you! I hope you're fantastic! 🥃
Unpopular opinion: The Yachtmaster is a Datejust with a fancy bezel. It has the same polished case with curved edges, same bracelet with polished center links, same easylink extension instead of a dive extension, precious metal bezel, sunburst dial, only one hundred meters water resistance.
Hey man. Enjoying a bit of niche geekery and missing wrist shot week 😂 Although not having that probably saves me a fortune, as I don't have to email you any damn photos of new watches! 😊
Call me mad, but I'm really enjoying the hiatus from WSW 😆 You don't want to know how manic was behind the scenes saving 100+ photos... let alone the hours of the shows and the hangovers two days after (from the hours of talking). Your Explorer will be just around the corner, I can feel it!
@@ID-Guy yeah man. It was my favourite thing on RUclips, but I do get why you ended it.... how about doing it maybe just a few times a year? Anyway... man I can't stop thinking about the Explorer. I really hope its special.... if I'm honest, I'm not in a position financially to buy it for cash, so it'll have to be borrowed.... unless it takes a few years which would give me time But if I do get the call in the next 6 months I'll have to just find a way It's a watch I would hold on to. I'm sure of it Man I was thinking about one detail about it.... I often find it hard to read the time quickly on watches, unless it's my casios.... I think what's brilliant about the Explorer 3,6 9 is how quickly you can orientate and tell the time, based on the numerals. It's this legibility that will make it easier to live with, and of course the size too.... and it does not scream "ROLEX" which is exactly what I want I could just get a Hamilton....I do wonder why we're willing to spend such money on watches.... but I think this will be worth it...
I took an "extended" break from WSW 😆 Behind the scenes they were very taxing... time consuming to put together (saving 100+ images) then the 3+ hour streams would hammer me for the next day or two (throwing off other work schedules) I'm toying with the idea of bringing back a more streamlined series in the future though! 🥃
@@ericb8888 Go in expecting them all to be baseball bat thick and you wont be disappointed 😂 It is crazy how much of a difference a skinny neck makes... takes you a good full day of "warming up" to get back to playing a fatter neck again accurately...
My boss usually wears yatch master 2 (and sometimes navitimer), when i asked him why he prefered yatch master, he said because he got a yatch, i think rich people don’t think too complicated.
Just adding a five-minute colourful scale to a standard minute scale is not enough to call a standard chronograph a Yacht-Master. With the same success anyone who has eyes can easily see when a minute hand of the standard chronograph reaches 5 minute marker. What I like about my Yacht-Master II is that it’s build the clear purpose. It’s countdown not a chronograph. You can countdown any time slot between 10 and 1 minutes. Very useful not only for yachting. Good for timing omelettes too. The only thing which is missing is an alarm sound when the countdown is over.
Great point Igor. My argument is really that the Regatta timing aspect to the original model was definitely an "add-on" but also that it didn't compromise the entire chronograph aspect of the watch at the same time. That's something I felt made it pretty special (albeit simple) - if it incorporated a flyback valjoux movement back in the day... what a beast! The YM2 definitely picks up on where the original Cosmograph model floundered as a far more "built for purpose" Regatta timer (nice mention about an alarm function, that would've been a fantastic feature) 🥃
Interesting story about the Yacht-Master and the fact that it largely failed because the Cosmograph case did not possess the water resistance needed for its intended purpose as a Regatta timer. I was just browsing new watches and have always had a fascination with Ollech & Wajs. They currently offer two vintage inspired chronographs with 500M water resistance rating, the Navichron and the Astrocrhon. Would love to see you do a review of one or both of these watches and the story behind Ollech & Wajs.
I'm definitely going to cover the brand soon enough on the channel. They have such a unique way of approaching their pieces, in a way reminds me of how Nivada Grenchen are pulling out the stops! Smaller brands are really nailing it in the modern landscape. Great suggestion brother! 🥃

Interesting story. Great presentation as always. The function of that counter makes perfect sense destroys the symmetry of that dial.

Amazing how Rolex struggled to get the Daytona up and running when nowadays many pay so much to get one
Isn't it mad? All because of how the collector space changed, so the Daytona suddenly became the "it" watch. What a world we live in 😆🥃
