Why Does Rolex Still Make Dress Watches? + 1908 Critique (Redesign)

  • A Discussion around the Rolex 1908 & Cellini Collection. Why does Rolex still make Dress Watches? For the opportunity to say that they can still produce their more classic pieces, to now compete with names that are far more established and to allow for customers to buy something in their stores in order to be placed on "the list". There are plenty of thoughts surrounding the 1908, but none of us really knows why it exists.

What are your thoughts on the Rolex 1908 and why do you think it exists? To prove that they can still make dress watches?
To compete with High Horology? Or as another option to put someone on an AD Waiting List?

When the 1908 was revealed this spring, it immediately caught my attention (unlike most all Cellini predecessors). I found it elegantly understated and striking. While I usually agree with your insightful critiques and suggested design improvements, I personally don't see the hour markers and sub-seconds as crowding the 1908 dial at all. That being said, at this price point Rolex should absolutely have included black and white enamel dials both to improve legibility as well as offer more quality and value. BTW, do you think Rolex should dig more into its rich dress watch legacy with some updated re-issues of significant pieces -- a la Omega, Longines, etc. -- e.g. the Ultra Prima?
I find your watch reviews always extremely thoughtful and fair. Your in-depth comments on historical reference and design language truly set you apart from your fellow RUclips brethren (and sisters). Keep up the fantastic work!

I have owned my Rolex Cellini for just over eight years, and I still get a wonderful sense of appreciation, when, having put a suit on, and going to a function, I look at my left wrist where a timepiece of incredible beauty resides. My model is the white gold, black dial version with the date sub dial at 3 o’clock. I also own a Yacht-Master 40, a 124270 Explorer and a 39mm Oyster Perpetual. They all give me equal amounts of pleasure and satisfaction in their own particular way. In 2014, when the Cellini was introduced, Rolex had an advertisement in the Sunday Times and the photograph made a big impression on me, I thought it looked absolutely stunning. I just had to have that black dial white gold model featured in the advert. I don’t care that it has not increased in value very much, I just love it for what it is, an incredibly elegant and beautiful example of the watchmaker’s art.

I find it puzzling that Rolex used matte dials on their new dress watch. As you mentioned, gloss would just look so much better. And is more appropriate for a dress watch too.
As for your redesign, I usually like them. But not this time. The central seconds hand just made the watch look like it had a gaping abyss at the 6 o’clock.
The cleaner look but with a 6 o’clock sub-seconds dial would appear more balanced IMO. And again, is more appropriate for a traditional dress watch.
Oh and as production numbers for this watch are likely to be very low, Rolex adding a little hand-finishing to the now visible movement, in the form of polished curved anglage etc…would of increased its appeal too.
I agree though, that this is just the first salvo of a line of watches that’ll start to incorporate complications such as a full calendar and chronograph (both of which Rolex have historically produced in the dress watch space) somewhere down the line.

The dress watch is one area where Tudor doesn't - I don't think - provide a sufficient sounding board (it does with GMT, dive, chronograph). If indeed the ultimate aim is to make the Rolex dress watch a cornerstone of the offering... On another topic, the sub dial is necessary for common dress watch complications such as the moon phase. It would be much less fussy if they removed the chronograph-like 20/40/60. I also think that, with an exhibition case back, the 'superlative chronometer' text can be removed to further tidy the dial. As IDGuy suggests, the hour marker batons are comically long and could be shortened or replaced with small round markers. There's potential here, but it feels like an almost deliberate miss to highlight the 'correctness' of the rest of the range.

The chrono mock-up looks too much like a Breitling Premier. I am curious to see if they ever really do venture into more complex complications, or if they just want to simply have a dress watch option that is not fugly.

The Omega CK 859 nailed the sector dial perfectly while recreating the first watch to house the historic 30T2 movement. And it was available at a fraction of the price the 1908 is being sold for.
The Rolex 1908 feels like an ineffective homage to an earlier timepiece but the dial design detracts from the whole. Why they went with a hollow circle on the hour hand alone and had to put “Superlative Chronometer” on the dial is beyond me.

The lawsuit in Chicago from one of the oldest dealers in the state really (if allegations prove true) explains a great deal of what I didn't want to know.
As far as Rolex competing with legitimate in house makers like JLC and Vacheron. no chance. Rolex didn't manufacture a watch entirely of their own making until 2004. I don't think anyone's confirmed but there are claims that critical components are still outsourced to Schwab-Feller AG.
