Yes, there was so much more to that era than many young people today seem to realize, and I think it's sad, really. So much of it was really beautiful. Beatniks with their poetry, poetic lyricists like Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, Simon and Garfunkle, The Mamas and the Papas, and Peter, Paul and Mary, then there was the peace and love, the gentle hippies, everyone accepted for who they are, flower power, freedom, brotherhood, sisterhood, the Summer of Love, Woodstock, these were also part of the 1960's and so many young people today hardly seem to be aware of any of it. Some today seem to think society back then was just terrible and now it's so much better because we've progressed. Their viewpoint is narrow minded, frankly. it wasn't all so beautiful, that's true, there was chaos and rioting, there were assassinations and airplane hijackings, and more, but there was so much good and so much beauty too. I was just a kid but I lived in San Francisco during the Summer of Love. San Francisco was the central hub of it all. I remember the hippies at the park and as a kid I really liked their vibe. They were so accepting of everyone no matter who they were, just mellow, harmless people living in peace, love, harmony, and laughter with other people. I could go on and on. What a time it was.

The album "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is an iconic album, there was a saying that if you didn't have this album in your collection then your collection was incomplete. Still true to this day.
When this came out in the year 1970, people also interpreted the lyrics as a universal message of caring for all people in need, more of a societal or world humanity thing, which fit in with the civil rights, anti-poverty, and anti-war movements of the time. I've noticed that young people reacting to it today see it as being a personal, individual message of having that one good friend. It still works for me, but Paul Simon didn't really want to write a third verse, he said he saw the song as a little hymn, but Art and others convinced him the song needed to be bigger. Reluctantly he wrote that last verse in the studio, which was something he never did before then, he preferred to hone his lyrics before starting recordings.
The song was written as a reflection on Psalm 18:2: This verse portrays God as our ultimate source of strength and protection. Thank you for listening to the entire song before adding reaction or commentary. So much better than those who pause and interrupt in the middle. I grew up with this music, all the way back to the early album they made under the name of Tom and Jerry. Yes, it can be seen as a Christian song, as Jesus said, "No greater love has a man than he who will lay down his life for his friends." Again, thank you for letting the whole song speak for itself before adding comments. Also, if this is, as you said, a series about the greats of each decade. Ever thought about extending that even further back. Such as a first hearing of three pieces of each of these musicians, J.S. Bach, A. Vivaldi, W.A. Mozart, L.V. Beethoven, Chopin, Lizt, Brahms, Maller, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Scott Joplin, G&I Gershwin, G. Gershwin, Billy Holiday, Cole Porter, Parliament, .... good gracious so many, Count Bassie (Bassy?) Woody Herman... so many more, In the era of Simon and Garfunkel, there were a number of great women artists too, Joan Biaz, Judy Collins, Carol King, of course you know of Linda Ronstant, oh so many! Thanks.
You mentioned Gershwins who scored Porgy and Bess and great women of the 60's and 70's and didn't include Janis Joplin who sang "Summertime" from P+B (my favorite version). Also along the same line Jeff Beck and Rod stewart covered Oscar Hammerstein's "Old Man River" another great piece on Truth. Great show tunes never get outdated.
@@rmsmith2396 So true. I never tire of finding great music of the past. I think the oldest one I know of is a set of lyrics, still commonly sung, from the year 500. It would be so cool to know the music of David and what his Psalms sounded like.

The best about this woman doing ‘first time’ is she did not stop and talk through the song. Good luck girl. Carry on 🎉
From start to finish, one of the most beautiful musical compositions ever!
Thank you for your respectful reaction. Excellent.
Only an angelic voice like Art Garfunkel's can make this song breathe and come to life imo.
I listen to this song mainly on long journeys I have a best hits CD and usually play this from start to finish it takes about an hour it really does break up my journey, I just love the harmony and the build up. Thank you Lizzie you are looking good. 🌹
GODSPEED….FROM ANOTHER TIME…ANOTHER GENERATION…..
This song is an all-time masterpiece!!
My childhood was tore up. Mom came through each time. This was one of her and my favorite songs.
Arts has to be one of the purest voices ever .
You got the song right your reaction is spot on.
Still gives me goosebumps 40+ years later!
I could see you feeling the song so deeply, and that’s exactly how it works on me. I had always loved Simon and Garfunkel, and when this album came out and I heard this song, I was lifted off the ground, off this earth, by the power and beauty of it! Every single part of it is perfect - they knew what they had when they recorded it; it’s a song for the ages. And not just this song, but this recording specifically. And they had so many brilliant ones, but for me this tops them all. I’m so glad you were moved by it; you have a good soul! ❤️
Paul Simon wrote this and Art Garfunkel sang lead. Simon came in on “sail on silver girl…”😊
In an explosive era chock full of incredible music, this was one of the biggest songs n records of that time!
Thank you, Lizzie! All the best!!
What a treat! Such a beautiful song. Great choice Lizzie! 💛
Thank you for listening and not commenting. Your expression says it all. So many of these young RUclipsrs interrupt the classics and they haven't a clue what they are talking about. Thank you for your respect!
Probably one of the best songs ever written by far.
There's nothing more humanizing than watching someone react to beautiful music, especially when it's of this caliber! I was right there with you the whole time.
You should watch this sung live at the concert in Central Park in 1981...it's really incredible!
I love Art Garfunkel's voice
Hi Darlin'!
Always a pleasure to watch you.
Love your reactions!
thanks so much!
@@lizziethegangsterhippie9291 Anytime...😘😘
Simon wrote this in 1969 and recorded with Garfunkle in 1970. This was my junior year. It was major with teens then. Even parents liked it.
Art Garfunkel has one of the greatest, most emotional voices ever!! Although I must add, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees takes the cake!
