Justin is still married to the same girl that he wrote this song about. They got married in 1970, 3 years after it was released in 1967. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice! My 90 year old father in law just lost his wife of 65 years last month. He cannot be consoled! So sad. There is something to be said about so many of these old school couples that kept on loving each other until the end....
@AudiophileTubes I'm so very sorry for your loss. My wife of 52 years passed away 3 years ago and her memory is all I have left.
Justin wrote the song in 1966. He met his future wife in 1967.
😢@@AudiophileTubes
@@williamhoppe4500 Thank you. I'm very sorry for your loss as well. May her memory be eternal.
This was written and composed by the lead singer, who you see here, Justin Hayward when he was just 19 years old. Imagine a 19 year old young man making something like this.
Old soul
It was these guys that introduced the Beatles to the melotron.
People who can do things at a level like this are amazing. I thing when Steve Winwood wrote I'm a man he was only 17. That's crazy.
Imagine how much better his voice was 50 years earlier.
@@AndyViantGod, it was pretty darn nice here and now.
I'm 71 years old and was a teenager when this song came out. It struck me so hard that a song could be so beautiful. I went to sleep singing Nights in White Satin as my eyes gently closed and I went into dreamland. The addition of the orchestra to the marvelous voice of Justin Hayward made this song absolutely most memorable.
I'm 41 and this song came out long before I was born. This is far from the first time I heard it but it will be last thing on my mind tonight before falling asleep.
I haven't lost all faith in modern music by any means but nothing like this will ever be made again. It's a masterpiece.
Every time I see someone younger react to older music (the music that has been the soundtrack to my life) like this, it restores my faith in humanity.
Same
I’m 70 years old, we had the best music❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I'm 55 years old,we had the best music 😀🤣🙂😉
Yes we Boomers were blessed with the best music ever, BTW, I’m 72 🙏
Yes we did ... sad to hear about Mike Pinders passing ! 😢
&2 years old, 73 soon - yup!
Amen, my sister, amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The studio version shows you his voice is even better as a youngster
I agree, this was still an epic belt, but the studio version can show you what he did without today's vocal manipulation software. This brings me back to times where we had so much less to worry about.
@@OriginalVenomZA, many people worried about the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Middle East, and race riots back then.
@@straycatttt2766 and now we have Cold War, the War on Terror, ISIS, the Middle East, Iran with nuclear weapons launching 300 missiles, riots covering everything from race, to the environment, to the G8 Summit, to the Presidential Elections, Trump, Biden, Covid, Joblessness, 8 Billion people on the planet, polluted oceans, AI taking jobs, food shortages everywhere from Madrid to Calcutta to towns in southern France, the Panama Canal both blocked and in danger of water shortages, drones as weapons, a hundred fold increase in school shootings, murder and rape, Detroit half abandon, Houthi Rebels shooting missiles as US ships, fentanyl epidemics in every city, a 20-fold increase in homelessness in the US, and the list goes on.
So, yea, you really showed us how little has changed.
... especially the full-length version with the spoken word poem at the end.
You should give the studio version, with the poem "Late Lament" appended to the end. Actually, the whole album "Days of Future Passed" is a must listen, as it's a concept album where all of the songs are meant to be heard in sequence.
Often, in live performance, Drummer Graeme Edge would recite the poem either at the beginning or end of this song.
There are also a ton of other great Moody Blues songs to hear, "Ride My See-Saw," "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band," "Question," "The Voice," and, my personal favorite, "Legend of a Mind."
The entire album is epic
This song was on an Album called “Days of Future Past” and on the album this song ends with a beautiful poem called “Late Lament”
“Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room,
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
Another days useless energy is spent,
Impassioned lovers, wrestle as one,
A lonely man cry’s for love and has none,
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colors from our sight,
Red is grey and yellow white,
But we decide which is right,
And which is an illusion.”
And was preceded by another poem titled “Morning Glory”
“Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colors from our sight,
Red is grey and yellow white,
But we decide which is right,
And which is an illusion.
Pinprick holes in a colorless sky,
Let insipid figures of light pass by,
The mighty light of ten thousand suns,
Challenges infinity and is soon gone,
Night time, to some a brief interlude,
To others the fear of solitude,
Brave Helios wake up your steed,
Bring the warmth the countryside needs”
Poems were written by the drummer Graem Edge.
There first big hit which put them on the map was “Go Now” in 1965. One of their last hits was “I know your out There Somewhere” 1988. 23 years of hits. They also had a song from 2003 called “December Snow”.
The times over the years I find myself quoting those words!!! Sometimes when out walking on a moonlit night, sometimes just because the feelings are rising. Always from the soul as that's how Graeme wrote them.
Exactly!
The correct title fo the album is "Days of Future PASSED" not "Past" 😊
I saw Graeme recite it live in the 1970's
The Voice is one my favorite Moody Blues songs
The lead singer Justin Hayward wrote this masterpiece when he was 19 and here in this live performance he's 65 years old. A rare talent.
Also, even at his older age he has such crystal clear, emotional and fine vocals. What a perfect song it is and always will be.
I believe this was from their concert in Royal Albert Hall in May of 2000. Justin would have been around 43 years old at that time. He is 77 years old now and still making beautiful music with his solo tours in the USA and UK. He is a one of a kind talent for sure. The Moody Blues were a special band and do not receive near the attention and credit they deserve. But those of us who love their music get it!
He was 53 during this concert. It took place in May 2000 at the Royal Albert Hall.
Finally you've gotten to a song that I hold dear to my heart.
Thank You.
P.S. Ms. Aileen Senpai, If you smiled any bigger. I'm scared your face would lock.
EDIT: There is an original 1967 version of this, that's 9 minutes long. Strongly suggest you listen to that at some point. It has things in it that are not in this version.
EDIT 2: Yes I'v been listening to this song since 1967. I'm old. Sorry. I realize young people don't like old folk being around. But I have enjoyed Ms. Senpai's reactions to music I have listened to for nearly 60 yrs in some cases.
Justin also sang on Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of the Worlds. His vocals on Forever Autumn are sublime!
Agreed, Forever Autumn is one of the highlights of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
That album was on constant replay in my car when it came out. LoL the days of mini cassette players.
Justin Hayward listens to some of the reactors listening to their songs. He replied to one of my comments on another reactor's reaction to this song. We exchanged a couple pleasantries across the comment section. I saw them live in 86 when their current hits were, "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" and "Your Wildest Dreams" and "The Voice" if memory serves me. It was a great concert.
Procol Harum ...Whiter Shade Of Pale ❤❤❤❤
My favourite song! I knew the lead singer Gary Brooker very well. I grew up in the same village he lived in. We drank at the same pub. He played it live on his own on the pub piano for my 21s birthday. Best present ever!
Yes this song 100%
Love it. But this is better, to be honest. Not by much, but it is.
In my "humble" opinion, this is the greatest love song ever. The rising and falling of so many different kinds of instruments, the lyrics, the vocals from beautiful harmony to voice cracking pain. In my experience, this ranks up there with Shakespeare's ability to describe love in poetry. All these decades later, I still get goosebumps.
The Moody Blues is a band that seems to be often forgotten about, but they have a wide range of hits. Isn't Life Strange, Your Wildest Dreams, The Story in Your Eyes, and I Know You're Out There Somewhere are good songs that will not disappoint.
I have never forgotten the Moody Blues. The granddaddy of progressive rock.
I'll also add "The Question" and "Autumn Forever" as two of their masterpieces.
Pretty much every song off Long Distance Voyager was on the radio. People know the songs but forget who sang them.
"Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)", "New Horizons", "I'm Just A Singer in a Rock and Roll Band", "Ride My See-Saw".
In Search of the Lost Chord was my first MB album. Mind blowing.
This song was so personal to me. When I was young I used to sing this song to my new wife while we were on road trips. We listened to the entire cassette. I put the Moody Blues at a class of their own. Not rock, pop, easy listening. I really could not classify them. But I loved them and gave them utmost respect.
The Question is another gem. The Word and Om should be listened to together. Tuesday Afternoon is also nice.
This is such a stunning performance
Wait till you hear the album version!!
🤯🤯🤯
one of the most amazing voices to come out of the 20th century.
This entire album is a must listen to when you need time in your own head and heart...
Everytime I watch this , it brings tears to my eyes. It's just unbelievably perfect and beautiful!!! Love you Justin!!! Love the Moody Blues!!!❤
The Moody blues were/are the type of band where you can start listening to a find yourself still listening to them hours later.
This is probably from their concert in Royal Albert Hall. That concert should be heard in its entirety.
Hi Miss Aileen Here are 3 more you might enjoy
1) Tuesday afternoon
2) Forever Autumn
3) In your wildest dreams
As always the like button 🔳 has been Illuminated 😊
I've met Justin Hayward 4 times and can attest that he is a gentleman and a sweetheart, his music flows from a beautiful soul.
One of best songs ever ❤
100 years from now, this will be looked at the same as the work of all the great Masters.
for sure masterpiece status
What I am enjoying the most about your reactions, is the pure emotion that you are experiencing from listening to the greatest music ever written. Which is the music of the 1960's, 70's & early 80's
Still one of the most powerful love songs ever written!💘💘💘
Another Moody Blues great is The Story in Your Eyes ❤😊
Logically, your next listen should be: “Procession/The Story In Your Eyes”, Aileen. Enter the MB’s deep Rabbit Hole - as leagues of us have over 50+ years of musical Moody time travel. Many reactors don’t understand Procession and its three-word lyrics. You will appreciate how the Moodies can transport their listeners across time and space. 💙

Its so beautiful.
Justin also did "Forever autumn" on Jeff Wayne's 1978 musical version of "The war of the worlds", widely regarded as a fantastic album.
Whenever I see a reactor hearing this for the first time I feel so freaking fortunate. The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd were all over the radio starting i my high school years. Not to mention a number of other bands. People growing to adulthood without hearing those two bands in particular just makes me sad for them. They made my younger years so much better.
Justin Hayward is such a fantastic and enigmatic singer. I can certainly recommend listening to the studio version as well; the high notes reach even higher and really grab you and drag you along. In the same vein, I can very much recommend Crowded House with "Don't dream it's over", *especially* the version from their goodbye concert; it's SO emotional and beautiful.
Saw them in 1987 in Miami. No orchestra. This was a special event. Check out the record version, there is a lament at the end. Also "Ride My Seesaw", "Tuesday Afternoon".
1967: Seattle, WA. Eagles Auditorium. Moody Blues played their first album. It blew our minds, and LSD helped. We cheered so long for more, more. Justin told us no one had ever cheered them or wanted more music. They played their set again.
One of the original symphonic rock bands. Timeless!!
One of? Try THE. They created prog rock.
Aileen, the Moody Blues are one of this 68 year-old's favorite bands of all time, and this is one rabbit hole worth falling deeply into. There are SO many awesome songs to listen to. My personal #1 go-to is "(The music to) the story in your eyes." For one of their more popular hard rockers, try "I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band." I love watching you rediscover the cherished music of my youth!💖
I saw them in Pensacola in 1994 with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. The Moody Blues would travel the world and send their sheet music ahead for the local orchestra to learn. So, each city got to see their local orchestra perform with the Moody Blues. The studio version has a poem added to it, so it's worth a listen.
One of the greatest pieces of music ever written.
Just had to say real quick, you always look so pretty in every reaction but especially this one with the bangs 🥹 Couple minutes in, already love how much you’re feeling the music with your facial expressions how it carries you ❤️
❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@AileenSenpai ❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of the Best and Most Beautiful Song ever written and recorded! WoWsers! Easily, one of my Top-10 Songs of ALL-TIME!!! Gorgeous Sublime .... Cheers!
Great song and reaction!
Back in the day Justin Hayward was known as "The Voice."
what a good choice to watch this song Aileen👍🏼 Beautiful beautiful song
❤
Love how she seems to really feel and appreciate this amazing song.
Hey Aileen! One of my favorite songs of all time. I haven't watched the reaction yet, but I'm pretty sure they never actually play the ending of the song during a live version, which is sad and you should listen to the full version on your own time. Fun fact though, my sister followed them around for years on tour and the drummer proposed to her. She said no because she didn't think she could handle the lifestyle of either always being on the road or being left at home until the tour was over, plus relocating. Meh, to each their own. I think she missed out tbh.
I'll always thank the Moody Blues for bringing me a touch of classical culture beyond the rock music I normally listened to at the time.
One of the greatest songs in history .
This song is from the album, Days Of Future Passed, where the record company wanted to alternate The Moody's music with brief orchestrational interludes. Between 1967 and 1972, The Moody Blues recorded 7 albums which are the recordings that established the band as an innovative progressive rock band. The mellotron is used in these recordings and each album is unlike anything you've ever listened to. Of course after those albums there are so many others. Other great songs from The Moody Blues are, Tuesday Afternoon, Ride My See-Saw, You And Me, The Balance, The Word | OM, Peak Hour, Your Wildest Dreams, English Sunset and so many others.
Beautiful is exactly what that performance is 🫶🏼
In the late sixties and early seventies, there were people who believed that musicians in general and The Moody Blues in particular had the answers to the worlds' problems. The Moody Blues response was the song "I'm just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band). It's a great song to check out.
A beautiful woman reacting beautifully to a beautiful song. What more can you ask for? Please also try the following great Moody Blues songs:
The Question
Forever Autum
Tuesday Afternoon
Ride My Seesaw.
Love your heartfelt reactions!
Nights in White satin has been one of my most favorite songs since it was first released. I am so glad that you were so moved by it! Your reaction to such a renowned song being it so old made me cry as well ❤
1967 - first inclusion of a full orchestra into a rock album...transformative.
This is one of the greatest tracks of the 20th century. Truly a masterpiece. Hard to imagine anything ever getting close to this in todays pop music. Another great Moody Blues track is titled: Question. Tuesday Afternoon is also great.
I still love his voice in this live version years later. I would love to see the goosebumps you get from the OG soundtrack. It's so angelic.
You'll love the Story in Your Eyes
Justin Hayward, the lead vocalist, is still performing live and hasn't lost a step. I'd go as far as saying his voice is stronger live than in studio due to the emotion actually being more honest in his songs. I'd suggest you check out any performance of his solo-song "Forever Autumn" live in concert from recent years. If you liked "Nights" I have no doubt you'll definitely love "Forever Autumn".
Written in 1967. They are one of the few bands that sound the same on stage as they do on records.
Very true. SO hard to do
Saw them in their hey day many many times at Red Rocks with symphony. Wow. Also saw them without symphony still AWESOME
THIS BAND IS SO GORGEOUS THEY HAVE GREAT SONGS
I'm a huge Moody Blues fan & I'm glad you're reacting to them. I would recommend "The Voice", "Question", "Your Wildest Dreams", "New Horizons" and "Tuesday Afternoon".
This might be the first big progressive rock epic, such a classic
Oh yah this is one of the greatest mood pieces in rock'n'roll history. If you want to hear their more rockin' rockin' out, the next go-to song has to be "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock'n'Roll Band." It's an absolute freight train of steadily building sound and tempo, with a voice collectively shouting out for meaning/answers in an impartial universe.
Moody Blues, my favorite group since 1970. The Story in Your Eyes, my favorite song by them.
Great song and performance, incredible orchestra, it gets you emotional. You so need to hear the album this comes from, The Days of Future Past, one of the first concept albums and has a Symphony Orchestra in synch with the band, in their look at a typical day. They were an utterly great band, one of the best ever. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎻🎺🎶
This is a timeless song relevant for any era so beautifully written and this performance is stunning. Consider that Justin sounds this great this late in his career amazing. The orchestra is so powerful at the end makes me emotional when I watch this version. Thank you great reaction thanks for the trip back in time to my teens much appreciated. 🤘🤟
Moody Blues Essentials should be in your playlist. Luv you Aileen!
The sheet music for the orchestral links are, I believe, lost and had to be essentially recreated. This is a good approximation and really conveys the sweeping (and often melancholic) sound that they were known for. Hayward would go on to have his biggest 'solo' hit with a song he didn't actually write, 'Forever Autumn', from Jeff Wayne's progtastic rock opera 'War of the Worlds'. Worth a listen in its own right.
I'm so glad you have discovered The Moody Blues, Aileen. They are an absolutely out of this world band.
I would suggest you give a listen to "Question" next ... another Justin Hayward composition on which he, of course, sings lead. The altering tempos within it are mesmerizing.
My favorite Moody Blues song is "Questions" When the tempo slows down the lyrics really grab you "It's not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me
It's more the way that you mean it
When you tell me what will be
And when you stop and think about it
You won't believe it's true
That all the love you've been giving
Has all been meant for you
I'm looking for someone to change my life
I'm looking for a miracle in my life
And if you could see what it's done to me
To lose the love I knew could safely lead me through
Between the silence of the mountains
And the crashing of the sea
There lies a land I once lived in
And she's waiting there for me
But in the grey of the morning
My mind becomes confused
Between the dead and the sleeping
And the road that I must choose
I'm looking for someone to change my life
I'm looking for a miracle in my life
And if you could see what it's done to me
To lose the love I knew could safely lead me to
The land that I once knew
To learn as we grow old the secrets of our souls"
Perfectly imperfect is what is missing in a lot of recent music. I've listened to this since it was released still brings me to tears. moody Blues was one of the first Progressive Rock bands. Love seeing young people discover this type of music.
You know that a particular song is good when it not only moves your heart but your soul.....
The first time I saw this video, I had the same feelings about the performance. I heard it as a kid in the ‘70’s, but this moved me so much more.
Justin had another great hit in '75 titled Blue Guitar
Can you believe this is 58 years old and when I listen always late lament at the end
One of my favorite songs
One of the finest pieces of music ever written. Perfection!
The Moody's well is very deep. I was enthralled with them in the 70s, but it was The Story in Your Eyes that was first experience with them. It still remains a favorite. Juxtaposed with Nights in White Satin (still their biggest hit) will show you their versatility. The artistry remains when the tempo steps up.
His voice had an even better range back in the day, still brilliant here a lot later on. I believe he was a teenager when he wrote this song. Definitely worth listening to the studio version. I have an original copy on vinyl. Love to just lay down and listen to it!
One of the greatest songs ever written!
I'm 80 years old Moody Blues was one of my favorites then and still are 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The studio version is one of the great recordings of the 1960s (the backing harmonies are absolutely amazing on that release). Not to mention the fabulous poem "Late Lament" that closes the composition. Hell, you might want to play all of "Days of Future Past" because of how historically important the album was as the birth of prog in 1967. One song you might really enjoy is "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)", which is commonly referred to as "Tuesday Afternoon".
An epic composition... This song has always mesmerized me... Almost a haunting quality to it, especially the album version that features a spoken word at the conclusion
The Moody Blues are a great band! There music is more than great it's an experience and a Vibe that transports you another dimension! I Luv this song! Thanks for sharing Aileen ❤️💛
I love your reactions Aileen. Whether you are dancing and smiling or crying you wear your heart on your sleeve and get emotionally involved. You are lovely to watch.🙂
I started really liking this song when I heard it on Dark Shadows. A bit of an underrated movie.
Quite right, Aileen. One of the most beautiful songs.
The Moody Blues were an awesome band and this song is awesome. We had a LOT of great bands back in that era.
My spouse of 55 years & I saw the Moody Blues perform with the World Symphony Orchestra at the Walnut Creek outdoor Band Shell in Raleigh, NC on a beautiful early summer night. MAGIC!
16 studio albums of which the 1st 7 are all considered concept albums. this album should be done end to end. the 5 of them were considered the worlds smallest orchestra playing up to 33 instruments on an album. loved your reaction and hope you do more. they have strings in a majority of their 200 plus songs made using the mellotron instrument which gives them an orchestral sound
I love the fact the band is older so the concert was recent so still enjoyed x
Great choice for a reaction video well done.
Saw them live in the 70s .
Watching you react to this beautiful music, our music, took me back to 1967 when I heard it for the very first time. It's unsurpassed and Justin is still touring and touching hearts whenever he sings this, the most wonderful song ever written (In the opinion of a generation of Moodies fans). Thanks
The fathers of progressive rock. This is from the first concept album, way back in 1967. Their "core seven" albums are required listening. They only recently stopped touring as a group. Justin and John still tour with their own bands, making more great moments for audiences everywhere.
I love watching your reactions because it makes me fully feel the music again and get emotional.
You are well on your way to hearing the best classic rock songs of all time. Your journey is just beginning, and you will not be disappointed.
