    The impurities came from allowing the gold to settle in the aqua regia overnight. Decanting while the soluttion is still cloudy with the impurities in suspension and immediately rinsing the gold sponge with hydrochloric and then water will have removed the impurities that followed the gold. The gold percipitates and settles faster than the impurities. Standing overnight allowed more impurities to precipitate into solids and settle with the gold sponge. Sprinkling Borax several times through the melt process will drive off remaining impurities as well keeping the button from sticking to the dish.

    This is fascinating. It would be cool if when you say what the next step is you also explain why you're doing it. For example: "seasoning with sodium nitrate and then remelting". Why? Or "seasoning with borax". Why?

    • @OwlTech333
      @OwlTech333  3 года назад +3

      for example I season with nitrate to oxidise any impurities that may be present, and I season with borax to remove the oxidised impurities from the button... I thought since I've explained this in other videos there was no need to go into details... Please accept my apologies!

    2 questions please - when you were boiling the pins in Nitric - how long did that take and how much Nitric acid did you use?? Thank You very much!

    • @xenaguy01
      @xenaguy01 2 года назад +4

      He said early on that he used 10% nitric solution (looked like about 1,500 ml) with 50g of citric acid added, three times. So, approximately 4,500 ml 10% nitric solution. Then they are boiled in 50% nitric (looks like about 1,000 ml) until all base metals are dissolved. He doesn't state the times, but I would guess 2-3 hrs per 10% nitric boil, and another 3-5 hrs per 50% boil. (Keep boiling til the reaction stops, which means the acid is used up.)

    • @OwlTech333
      @OwlTech333  Год назад

      @@xenaguy01 Thank you! You are a very good observer! Your time calculations are also correct (as I remember it - it took me whole day to dissolve the pins)! I'm impressed!

    Hi, Still liking your work. I wonder if you could include the 'why' together with the 'what' when you make additions? For example, why were you adding sodium nitrite? What reactions did you expect, What result did you expect, why that chemical instead of another option. etc Keep up the good work & stay sa0fe!

    • @xenaguy01

      Sodium nitrite aids in oxidizing impurities, and borax aids in removing oxides from the gold.
