As a HEMA practitioner, I know very little about the techniques used here but I know that theses guys know what they are doing because wielding a wooden sword with that speed and control is no easy feat. In our club we spar with wooden swords due to a lack o better equipment and I know all too well how much you must trust your technique and your opponent's, and how much it can hurt if either one fails . Very cool video to watch, congratulations and hope you guys stay safe!
I will say this, you don’t usually see Wooden sword fighting, the swords they are using are called Bokken in Japanese, normally if you were to spar someone with swords both of you would use a Shinai which is the bamboo one.
@@blockhead3019 where im from, the shinai is mostly used for kendo sparring with proper kendogu. while bokken and iaito is usually for kenjutsu demonstration, sheath pratice or controlled sparring, typically for seniors who have great control over their bokken.
Hi, my own thoughts here. Being a practitioner of a koryu kenjutsu style, I like to offer my opinions. The guy with the white head band shows why its important to maintain a strong chudan kamae position as half the time, his opponent didn't manage to break his center when attacking and simply ended up impaling himself. A solid chudan kamae or sometimes called seigan kamae is important in kenjutsu as it forms the basis of every attack and counter. The other thing is that because this is a sparring with bokken and little protection, you can see the dynamics change dramatically as opposed to Kendo where there's protective gear, a shinai being used instead of a wooden sword, and limited areas to hit. The moves are much more conservative, there is a feeling of intensity and there is an element of what is called Ai-Uchi which means mutual killing. There were 1 or 2 moments where both swordsmen would have killed each other if it was a real duel to the death. I have to say that its definitely interesting to watch but for safety sake, I wouldn't recommend this kind of practice on a regular basis...
practicioner of mugai-ryu kenjutsu here. biggest issue here is that hes looking for the point as if it were a kendo match. his chudan kamae is strong, but in this circumstance it doesnt matter. this video more proves the idea that modern kendo is a sport, rather than a style of swordsmanship.

Let me first say that I like the vid. I love seeing different styles of training. But I wonder if this and kendo really has any use. What I see here and in kendo, is that both fighters try to hit each other first. But don't try to avoid the strike that is coming in. Example: Fighter nr1 goes in for a attack. Fighter nr2 does not try to avoid, but tries to hit him faster. Resulting in the one having his arm cut off and the other one his head split open. Thats not effective swordfighting.
Because there is no point of make the fight longer than it should. Finish the fight and move on to the next opponents or die trying. The longer the fight, more energy you lose. You may win that 1 opponent but the second will kill you when you run out.
both actually did VERY well here. I'm impressed. Close matches, realistic. Smoother than a lot that I've seen. Down side with bokken though is that each person will pull a bit differently. There were a few moves I saw where one was in a winning position, then the other adjusted and looked like he thought he won. That's why I still prefer boffers. PVC is cheap, and you can go full contact with no armor, while maintaining a good sword weight.

@kikstar45 Wel i am 15 and started practicing kendo about 3,5 months ago . Practicaly in our dojo (don't know about others) we only use our bokuto (bokken, non foam) for kata. We have 2 different dojo's in our country and I have never seen a foam bokuto. We use our shinai for sparring and our bogu, foam might be good for sparring with a friend. If that wasn't the meaning of the foam ones. I can give you one more tip : never let the tip of the sword rest on the ground will make sensei mad.
@newtubetubetube I don't delete anything, and do you know why? Because I don't really need to. Try to read this entire dialog through, and MAYBE you'll realize that I was simply trying to let the publisher of this vid that I enjoy this art, the weapons involved and the vid itself. You just possess a destructive personality, and I've had enough of this, and not least, I've had enough of you, mate. And I don't judge you by your page. I don't need to. But it sure confirmed my suspitions about you.
I agree with you. Aside from some of your commas, your English is very good by the way. You could make the argument that actual sword fights where the intent is to kill or seriously injure the opponent are very rare nowadays and that the purpose of modern martial arts like this is to study the movement of the human body for personal benefit.
I say well done, finally a good example of bokken sparring, and definitely not some unskilled trailer park people who swing sticks like the rest of the videos I've seen on RUclips.
You don't have to hold back boys you don't really have to hold back that's actually incredible what you're doing with your wooden sticks swords I just wish I could have been doing stuff like that in karate and maybe dangerous but it's actually pretty unique and very very skillful 🥋👊😉👍🥋
@YouMayCallMeZero you are totally right, they both didn't seem to be verry skilled. I am also afraight when i have to stop right above the head of my oponent who is not wearing armor. And i am trained 3.5 months though but still. Pure technical i have seen not properly tied do an nakayui also the one in "armor" didnt keep his left leg straight and with the jump like motion(fumikomi) he landed on the tip of his foot instead of landing flat. just to conclude, this gives kendo a bad name.
I know that you are right, but i would like to know who told that 木刀 was bokken. It looks like everywhere outside japan bokken is used, even though bokuto is at least as easy to say.
No, he must defeat him until the student surpasses him. Losing to the student every time will boost their ego making them overconfident and think they are the best when they have many flaws to perfect and fix
Seriously after reading the insane deplorable shit people are writing in the comments, i have to say you are my new hero for just keeping up the posts. Stay strong man no matter how many pizza faced, over weight teen gamers give you shit, don't put that fuckin bokken down!
Exactly. Too many people think what they see in "The Last Samurai" is how it actually was. They go more for entertainment than artform. This apparently did not entertain. They dont appreciate the amount of skill needed to read someone, expect a certain attack and then counter that attack while remaining calm and focused. They just like to hit each other with sticks.
I clicked all the accounts of people giving negative comments here.....unsurprisingly there is no evidence that these people ever picked up a sword, bokken whatever....so then please shut up!
Yeah its pretty strange, i had some vids up on another channel of my buddy and i dickin around (ha ha no pun intended) and we got harassed by teen gamers till i gave up and took it down... not one had any vids of sparring or sword play
I guess there's nothing physically stopping some from commenting on something they know nothing about, but it does get a bit obnoxious. Like watching a 300lb man who never picked up a pigskin scream insults at a highschool football game. Idk, seems like one could reserve negative judgement for things that one actually has knowledge or experience with. Like when i'm a new to welding, so i don't just go shooting off my mouth about welding, i listen to my instructor or my grandfather or who ever has the experience under belt and i don't shit all over peoples welding projects, cuz i'm just a noob too. When it comes to sword there's a bunch of people who have never picked one up commenting and its obnoxious in kind of the same way. Just a thought.
what the fuck i don't get any of those arguments?? I was actually surprised at their skills, sparring with bogu and shinai is one thing but with bokken and almost no gear, this was a realistic fight with good self control. Respect
Great video! You guys have really good control! This sort of sparring is more realistic IMHO then Kendo. Without a shinai/bogu. the two partners both have a very real fear of injury, and as such have to work through their body's adrenaline response in order to remain calm and collected. To the "just do kendo" folks: What they are doing here is a much older, more traditional sort of sparring. This is to kendo what Jujutsu are to Judo.
Base on your comment, i assume you have never practiced kendo or quit after few months. Good luck using bokken for Joudan or Nito. Two people in this video practiced kendo to the level that they can control the sword and stop at any point so they can use bokken as experience. I am sure they don't use bokken for daily training.
There are no customs attached to weapons, Sir. But it´s good to hear, that your trainers and masters have focus, that you learn the correct behaviour and the correct Kiai. Do me a favour and do not try to trade your learnings as the only truth in the world. tx. °v°
I did "freestyle" fight with a polypropylene bokken I own, and really, it's fun, as long as you stay dynamic. This sparring isn't even good, you know why? Look, they mostly would cut each other, what is that meant for? You fight to cut your opponent without letting yourself get hit, so defend, avoid and counter! This is more of pointing at each other than a fight. EDIT: And yes, it hurts, but it's like paintball. You have to feel the pain and then you can put your heart in it to be better and not get hit, then it gets fun.
Actually, what they are doing is true to how samurai duelled. Or any true sword fighter, really. Everyone is so used to having super dramatic, intense, long fight scenes in movies that they think that's how it was like. No duel lasted more than 30 seconds to a minute. They were fighting to kill, and had extreme skill in doing so. It was not for entertainment, like the UFC or in movies. The opponents could read body language to predict an attack on them. Hakama are specifically designed to hide the feet and their movements to make it harder to read. I took a few lessons on duelling and it was all about finishing quickly and efficiently.
Right, when i practice kata its normally with another person, moreso dual kata or iaido even though I know the definitions defy working with others, sparring with bokkens is fine as they are designed to be used in prolonged training, whether sparring or using them in iaido training, I find them to be great.
*+Ernesto Perez* I wouldn't call this sparring, it's seems to be more of a drill. That being said, with proper safety gear, you could use bokken for sparring.
When I watch this video, all I can think of is the phrase "If the enemy is in range, so are you."

Fumikomi ashi:mostly kendo.
Tokui Waza: mostly kendo but a bit Kenjutsu.
Zanshin? Not sure if demonstrated.
Ken Seme by white bandana sparrer : used both kendo and Kenjutsu.
Good katate Tsuki by white bandana though a bit risky sacrificing your own center the other could have done morote Tsuki at the same time.
Zanshin is the must in any real fight.
Any martial art have it. Kendo is just more focus than other.
@Zuruku
I only meant your video itself. I wasn't about to crtiticize your fightingstyle.
I only said "if you even have a sensei", because it could be that you have no sensei anymore.
I wrote it because i would insult my sensei with such vids. No matter if i'm bad as hell or a genius, that doesn't matter.
"But I would friendly remind you to ask your Sensei, ..., to teach you respect.... Fuckehead"
This is kinda ironic ;)
Can anybody told me how much weight does that bokken contain?
Mine is 750gm or 25oz of Japanese white Oak. They will easily break bone if misused.
Can somebody explain this to me? All I'm seeing is two dudes with absolutely zero defense. In every exchange, both parties would be killed or incapacitated because they're all simultaneous hits. Why is neither person putting any emphasis on proper defense?
Awesome skill you guys. great way to cross sword. And i have no real criticism about your meathod, but fyi, 1:07, totally an anime parry/block. Kinda badass though, turned a friendly spar into something out of soul caliber. GO MITSURUGI! lol! great job you guys! more people need to post competant duels online
They move so fast my eyes cant catch up
You have to have trust in either your opponent or yourself that you wear that little protective gear.
great vid but the quality of the video is problematic, lots of distortion. Can you re-upload it I would really like to watch it more closely
Very nice!
That green effect from the begging of the video almost gave me a stroke
@kikstar45
Wel i am 15 and started practicing kendo about 3,5 months ago .
Holy shiat I have to watch this in slow motion
@newtubetubetube I don't delete anything, and do you know why? Because I don't really need to. Try to read this entire dialog through, and MAYBE you'll realize that I was simply trying to let the publisher of this vid that I enjoy this art, the weapons involved and the vid itself. You just possess a destructive personality, and I've had enough of this, and not least, I've had enough of you, mate.
And I don't judge you by your page. I don't need to. But it sure confirmed my suspitions about you.
I thought dude screamed in pain from that collarbone chop 00:32
I agree with you. Aside from some of your commas, your English is very good by the way.
You could make the argument that actual sword fights where the intent is to kill or seriously injure the opponent are very rare nowadays and that the purpose of modern martial arts like this is to study the movement of the human body for personal benefit.
dont get what the fuss is about ... great control, both of you
I say well done, finally a good example of bokken sparring, and definitely not some unskilled trailer park people who swing sticks like the rest of the videos I've seen on RUclips.
You don't have to hold back boys you don't really have to hold back that's actually incredible what you're doing with your wooden sticks swords I just wish I could have been doing stuff like that in karate and maybe dangerous but it's actually pretty unique and very very skillful 🥋👊😉👍🥋
@YouMayCallMeZero
you are totally right, they both didn't seem to be verry skilled.
0:32 SPAAAAAAAAAAAST!!!
This isn't shinkendo, it is spastic longsword style with bokken.
I am Japanese.
This is not bokken.
It is bokuto.
私は日本人です。
これは木剣(ぼっけん)ではありません。
これは木刀(木刀)です。
I know that you are right, but i would like to know who told that 木刀 was bokken. It looks like everywhere outside japan bokken is used, even though bokuto is at least as easy to say.
lol, that's like saying "why is there more than one sword fighting art"
They don't do kendo, because they don't want to.
That was beautiful man
Man if I was the guy with the black headband I would be so frustrated
i enjoy watching this
0:32 AAAAASSS!!
PAAAAAAASS
The guy on the left is the instructor, who is supposed to lose every time against a student to allow the student to learn and gain some confidence.
No, he must defeat him until the student surpasses him. Losing to the student every time will boost their ego making them overconfident and think they are the best when they have many flaws to perfect and fix
That was freaking superb, excellent control
Seriously after reading the insane deplorable shit people are writing in the comments, i have to say you are my new hero for just keeping up the posts. Stay strong man no matter how many pizza faced, over weight teen gamers give you shit, don't put that fuckin bokken down!
Exactly. Too many people think what they see in "The Last Samurai" is how it actually was. They go more for entertainment than artform. This apparently did not entertain. They dont appreciate the amount of skill needed to read someone, expect a certain attack and then counter that attack while remaining calm and focused.
They just like to hit each other with sticks.
I wish there was some competition with this type of fight
There is it's called the kendo world championship it's really cool😁👍
🤩⚔️
You know why it's called a boken? You hit someone over the head hard enough their skull will be boken in two!
As far as i know you use jodan vs chudan, not chudan vs chudan. I think it's basics
Very good on the white side. Good stances from the left
You live and learn my dear.
Thank you Mr. Nixon.
Well but everobdy who is interested in kendo knows that kissaki should be in the level of the throat
You guys are awesome. Don't let the mewling rants of the obnoxious get to you, okay?
what the fuck i don't get any of those arguments??
@DonRubinjo my young friend, do me a favor:
do what ever you want to do, but stay off RUclips.
There are no customs attached to weapons, Sir.
But it´s good to hear, that your trainers and
masters have focus, that you learn the correct
behaviour and the correct Kiai.
Do me a favour and do not try to trade your learnings as the only truth in the world.

흥미롭긴 한데 엄청나게 위험한 스파링이다. 죽도와 보호구가 있는데 궂이 맨몸에 목검을 쓰는 이유는?? 잘못하면 뼈가 부러질텐데??
I took a few lessons on duelling and it was all about finishing quickly and efficiently.
bokken owns shinai
0:55, SHIT!
Well done.
I like the vid but why shoes?
the dude on the right is so good
awesome technique!!! great control! よくやった
There is sth wrong with Kendo. But I'm not sure what.
I thought that bokken were not intended for sparring.
what else would bokken be good for...
***** From what I recall, a bokken is used for katas.
Right, when i practice kata its normally with another person, moreso dual kata or iaido even though I know the definitions defy working with others, sparring with bokkens is fine as they are designed to be used in prolonged training, whether sparring or using them in iaido training, I find them to be great.
I have done plenty of sparing with bokkens as long as you dont land a full powered hit there is no problem
*+Ernesto Perez* I wouldn't call this sparring, it's seems to be more of a drill. That being said, with proper safety gear, you could use bokken for sparring.
why should we ?
0:33 MAAAAANZ!!!
uh... I find this too familiar with....laser.....space.... oh wait!
Good stuff guys.
I’m going to say it the white head band guy was not trying fr
