Thanks, handn't seen that one yet. I've driven my Challenger SRT8, Mustang GT & Camaro SS/RS thru the same twisty "road course" and I'ld rank them SS, SRT8 then GT for control in the turns. The GT (manual) however was the most fun to drive when driven HARD, pitching the solid axle around the curves. Brings back memories of the old days.
These cars are so close that its in the driver's skill & knowledge of the car that makes the winner.

I drive my Camaro SS on the road all the time. The twisty type of road. You know, here in Washington State, we have mountains, and back roads and it's beautiful to drive in. Speeding on regular roads is illegal, so for those saying no-one takes a ZL1 to the "track" often....same holds true for the drag strip. Both take time & expense to do. So, when I get my ZL1 and drive it to the same places I drive my SS (See my videos), it's generally curvy roads. This is where the ZL1 has the win.

Car and Driver (if you read the article..) ran 12.3, Road and Track got a 12.4 IIRC, and InsideLine just got a 12.1. MT are the only ones left yet to test the car outside of Atlanta.

Also, figures for both vehicles were taken from InsideLine comparison testing using the same testing procedures (distance/diameter being the same). Just so you don't think one ran on a 300 foot circle and the other a 200 foot, or one went down 8 cones at 120 feet and the other 6 at 100. They were both 6 cones at 100 feet, and a 200 foot diameter skidpad test.

It's Cal Speedway. He says it at the start of the video: en. wikipedia. org/wiki/ Auto_Club_Speedway
"Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway) is a two-mile (3 km), low-banked, D-shaped oval superspeedway in Fontana, California which has hosted NASCAR racing annually since 1997."
"In 2001 the Auto Club Dragway, a 1/4 mile dragstrip, was built outside of the backstretch of the main speedway. That same year, the infield of the speedway was reconfigured to hold a multipurpose road course."

Where did you find those Willow Springs times? Fastlap com doesn't show them.
    Looking at VIR times:
    12 Camaro ZL1 is10th at 2:52:38,
    13 Mustang GT500 is 21st at 2:58:00
    10 Mustang GT500 is 23rd at 2:58:48
    12 Mustang Boss 302 LS is 31st at 3:02:80
The 13 Camaro LE for less than $40k is said to run in less than 3:00
Gotta love the modern hp wars. All awesome cars with their own flavor. In last 2 years I've bought a new Challenger SRT8, Mustang GT & Camaro SS/RS.

Im still confused about the lap times Inside Line has on their website. It shows the Shelby was faster around Willow Springs when they tested them. Unless that's an error then the ZL1 lost at everything but like slalom & skidpad and yet they pick it as the winner???

That's not completely surprising given the GT500's humble origins, but I expected more from the Bilstein two-mode adjustable shocks, which are part of the $3495 Performance Package. The car wallows like a stuck pig and I desperately attempted to load up the outside wheels on corner entry. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't calm the Shelby to precisely attack a corner.

  • @TheBulldawg4life

Read the article(s) for the video, and you'll see the GT500 has the SVTPP/TrackPack/Recaro's. The problem is the live rear axle can't handle variable changes like the ZL1's magnetic suspension. The GT500 looked completely pushed to me, too much more steering effort and it'll start coming around.

Th epa hwy is 24, not 25. Inside Line observed "17.7 (includes 2,300-mile highway drive)" in the ZL1, and "19.9 (includes 3,269 mile highway drive)" in the GT500. for the ZL1: "Engine speed @ 70 mph (rpm) 2,000". Engine speeds are reported elsewhere for the GT500 as "roughly 1500 rpm" at 80 mph, and 1300 at 60 mph. Steep gearing is what's producing those stratospheric epa numbers.

So with them both using their traction systems the Shelby ran faster right? So while they had both cars at Willow Springs the Shelby had the better time? So even though the Shelby has skinnier tires, which means a smaller contact patch, its hanging right in there. Like I said before, it'd be cool if they'd test the cars with sticky tires so they could run them flat out without traction issues.

Ferociously tall gearing means third gear is good for 140 mph and first gear is long enough to reach highway speeds. Even so, the quarter-mile passes in 11.8 seconds." Let's me know this isn't accurate information. Maybe you can figure out what's wrong with it...

  • @331Grabber
    @331Grabber 12 лет назад

For comparison the ZL1 motor differs from the LS9 in some pretty important areas if you want to add more power. The ZL1 motor has cast pistons, powdered metal rods, a way smaller cam (.480/480 Lift 198/216 dur) , and a smaller 1.9 TVS blower. Both have a forged crank.
The LS9 has: Forged pistons, forged titanium rods, much bigger cam (.562/.558 and 211/230 dur) and a 2.3 TVS blower. -far more potential-
The GT500's 5.8 has forged everything. 2.3 TVS and far more power potential.

I wasn't just referring to just the track race at Gingerman, I was referring to the overall comparison, Automobile Magazine had to choose a race course suited to the ZL1's lack of straight line(realitively speaking) power and highlight it's prowlness in the tight stuff to allow it to not be considered an overpriced, underpowered super pony car. They played both sides and just like Road & Track would agree, going in circles is more important than going in a straight line to them.

Ive seen some comparissons of this new Viper with the Vette on the Speed channel. They are indeed a very close match up! But, the Vette was a more well rounded package if i remember correctly. Tho that SRT-10 was slightly faster, upon entering the higher speeds past 100mph, it loses lots of pull. Not cool considering its a v-10. That vette will put you in your seat at nearly any speed.

Honestly I don't see a purpose for the GT500 except to keep Shelby alive. The Boss 302 has been the best Mustang for 2 years now, and that didn't change with the 2013 GT500 either. I just like that the ZL1 (for about $5k more than a 302 LS) has all the handling abilities everyone loves about the 302 LS, with all the power the GT500 has had for years.

If you watch the video, the Camaro is working a lot harder in the turns than the mustang. They didn't push the mustang to its limits. They also didn't use the launch control on the mustang during the straight line performance. The GT500 has already been tested to a positive G. I wonder if they chose not to get the track package for the GT500 either.

Your violent crusade makes me curious. Has anyone, to your knowledge, ever claimed that the 2013 GT500 *isn't* quicker in the quarter-mile than the ZL1?

Actually, Autoblog says: "we managed to squeeze a 12.221 at 121 mph".
    Advantage: ZL1.

Also, I did buy my car partly because of the color. I was smart to do so seeing as how the value increased over the last 3 years because of the color. I also bought it because for a $30k SS to run dead even with $50+k GT500s, I was impressed. That and Ford was offering a V8 that made as much power as the V6 Camaro. I picked the best car available in 2009..by far.
