Former fashionista here….when I discovered a passion for gardening, my priorities shifted. I became more interested in soil than shoes. It truly is about priorities and what I value. I’m much happier discovering things that add meaning and value. It’s also great to be off the “next thing” fashion hook. Really, no one cares - at least those who matter.
3 important words - I Have Enough ☺️
This has been helpful for me in moving away from impulsive spending 💸💰☺️
Aka Clutter collecting 😂
Ikr. 😂
Excellent Mantra!
Today, we went to walmart, I was watching the clothing and my husband asked me if I wanted something bc today is my birthday and I answered: no thank you, I already have a lot.
I want to create a emergency fund in a one low income (his) and being with my babies at home. I cannot aford to spend money in cute seasonal clothes that later gonna declutter and regret spending the money in "trash". Thank God we have house, food and a bit more than enough clothing
Stay focused. Be generous to something more important than clothing and endless buying.
Joshua, I would add to this: "Shop at thrift stores and consignment shops." By doing so, I am able to buy high quality items and give them a second life.
Donating 3 beautiful sweaters today, not worn since retiring 3years ago! Let someone else will enjoy these.
Great video. Snapped me out of my trance of recent acquiring. I realize what I'm doing is filling a void - which is sadness and a sense of unworthiness.
Thank you, Joshua.
I always think… the money I save on trendy clothes can be used for my next vacation/experience and that is so much better than extra clothes in my closet.
I just feel like the most beautiful and elegant people I run across are often really keeping it very simple. I think it’s a lot like decluttering my house was. Less stuff “piled on” led to being able to let the beauty shine more and to be able to see it better. More or less rather than noticing something shiny or sparkly or gaudy ON someone, you notice THEM more rather than some “piece” or trinket they have on. And well, def character and who they really are matters far beyond any of that also.
I guess it’s working tho. Lol. I got rid of a lot and now I have people telling me things like “You always look so cute/put together.” I prob did look put together before but now the diff is that it is just so much easier and faster for me. Ironically I really don’t care (what they think of my style lol) but it’s nice to have a little icing on the cake every once in awhile. For me tho it’s often the classic white tee rather than black. 😅😅
I did simplify my wardrobe, then got bored and wanted to change things up. I don’t put together outfits for trends or to please anyone; I do it because its fun and I enjoy it! I only realized that after discarding 80% of my wardrobe. Though I’m not doing a capsule wardrobe, I am still mindful of each piece I bring in. I also learned to sew so I can mend and modify thrifted garmets and stay away from fast fashion even while switching things up.
👍
Joshua, thank you for doing what you are doing and inspiring all of us ,on our minimalist journeys, with integrity and spirituality. I find great value in all of your videos. God Bless you and your family.
There's no minimalist like Joshua Becker! Joshua is not about trends and aesthetics.
Joshua Becker, I trully appreciate your meaningful contribution to the improvement of our world and our lives!
You're thanking a neoliberal capitalist and colonizer.
I really appreciate this, Joshua. I'd also like to point out that many of the examples of minimalist wardrobes lead you to believe that it's all about black t-shirts and jeans. But you can have a minimalist wardrobe that is full of high-quality AND stylish clothing. I've worked in Denmark several times and have been struck by how much personal style and elegance can be achieved with a tiny closet and a few well-chosen pieces. Minimalism does not have to be boring.
Thank you!
@@BarnaliD I agree! So many minimalists work as full-time youtubers. I have to go into an office every day, but I have put together a style uniform that really works. I am literally in my last week of doing Project 333, and it's made me realise I have far too many clothes! I won't be going back to a 'maximalist wardrobe' again!
I think you nailed when you say true beauty comes from inside! ❤
Great message! Thanks Josh! I've always wondered why people in tech kept their wardrobes simple (Mark Zuckerburg, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Sundar Pichai) . Now I understand. It not only clutters your closet, but also your mind. It's nice to have a simple, high quality, wardrobe to choose from; however, it does require a shift of mindset. You have to stop caring about what kind of person people see you as, and start caring about the kind of person you really are. It's a lifelong journey, and I'm grateful I have this amazing community to share that journey with!
It’s simplicity. It has helped me so much. Decluttered my closet and looks great. I have few quality pieces and they are interchangeable and look good on me. Don’t feel the need to have more. Your message is what I need. Thank you
Love when you said to consider what you currently have with clothes as a blessing, you have less desire to add. Only rid of too small or too big and wear the older stuff as around the house clothes. Buying less often only as needed. Great common sense video. Thanks for the encouragement!
As a retiree and caretaker of my husband with Parkinson's I have a very casual, simple life and wardrobe. I kept wanting dressier items, then they would just hang in the closet. I've pared it down and finally feel very content and grateful for what I have and don't plan on getting/needing anything new for at least a year. I take care with laundering and mend my clothing, as needed.
I get mesmerized by Josh's slow blinks.
Uh-oh, that doesn't sound good.
What you are, Joshua, is riveting and convicting like Truth.
Great ideas. I’m always working on my minimalist classic style wardrobe. But not often buying. And don’t forget using a good tailor. Great fitting clothes always look good.
My clothes are second-hand or third hand. Rummage sales, thrift shops, garage sales, neighbors, and my kids are all good sources for clothing and accessories.
I bought one pair of shoes this year, and one purse. Those were the only brand new items I bought. When my kids were young, they wore hand me downs, so
did my grandkids when they were young. Shopping shouldn't be a hobby. Tina, Al's wife
2 new items only sounds so liberating. You don’t have to deal with returns and/ or exchanges, no endless browsing or spending time at stores. You’re inspiring. ✨
Shopping is a great hobby, as long as you are able to lesve empty-handed if you didnt find a good deal. Some people enjoy looking for those deals. Im jelous.
Another good message Joshua. Thanks for sharing. You are appreciated.
Happy Friday! I really look forward to your Friday videos! Thanks Joshua and happy weekend everyone!!! 💖💖💖
My capsule is easy. All jeans. Reg jean. Jean shorts and jean skirts. And some comfortable dresses. With color❤. Anyway it ALL matches lol. Ohhhh and there is only ONE CLOSET in our little cozy home so we r minimal anyway do to no room lol
Well said. And I think it is the same with furniture! So many people buy furniture to impress or because there is a new trend. There ist so much great stuff out there at estate sales, garage sales, eBay, thrift- stores that is still in good shape and will stand the test of time 😊
Thanks again for making such an amazing video and the reminder I have enough
Beauty; character, values, how we treat others. I’ve always said beauty is something we see in our own mirror. Attractiveness and beauty are two different things!
Thank you, we need to be reminded about these bonuses to living simpler.
Joshua, I am so thankful for you. I hope more people, especially the young ones will see and hear your advice/s. Because as a young person, I can attest you somehow changed my mindset and the way I want to live my life. You are an amazing human being!
All great recommendations here. My favorites are to buy good-quality item and to buy items that are ethically made.
Love and appreciate your videos so much, thank you!
Im so happy I subscribed to your channel! I learn so much from it! Thank you Joshua
Always wonderful thoughts! Have an awesome weekend!
Thank you for your wisdom, Joshua.
THANK YOU for taking the time to create these Great and Helpful videos Joshua!!!
Thanks Joshua. I have been on the decluttering journey since the start of Covid& it’s ongoing.
I have got rid of so much.
Clothes are the difficult task, but I am doing well with it.
Gratitude is so true& I have enough ❤🙏
When you gotta buy , please go second hand as much as possible, there is more than enough clothes in the world already made
I love color! So I found a couple of styles I liked for tops and purchased a number of different colors in the various styles. I have long sleeve, short sleeve and tanks tops. I have a few pairs of jeans, dress pants and capris along with 3 dresses. All fit nicely in my closet. Not really minimal but I no longer have a ton of clothes stuffed in my closet and dresser. 2024 will be a no-spend on clothes…unless I lose 50lbs. 😁
Thank you Joshua for another inspiring message ,I need to hear this every day 😏you are a blessing to me .God bless you and your family
I am so glad I have found your channel Joshua. I learned about you from a collaborative video you had with Dawn the “Minimal Mom”: I appreciate your videos as you help me think about what matters most. I could have used this 15 years ago when I had my first child. I love your philosophy and your faith. Thank you for helping me
I especially appreciate tip number 9, buy with sustainability in mind
Thanks for this video! I have been thrifting my clothes and looking for linen/cotten blends because it wears like iron.
Love your definition of beauty. 😊
I recently purchased some new t shirts. My car was stolen & it had 3 loads of laundry in it. When my car was recovered, they had stolen most of my clothes. All of my best shirts were taken so I replaced slightly less than half of them.
I agree!! I always appreciate your wisdom.
Fantastic advice--great points.
Sustainability was the main reason for me to invest in a color and bodytype analysis. Knowing what looks best on you keeps you from buying clothes you won’t wear. And I need way less and still can make so many different combinations. Everything goes together! ❤ No need to spend much time on getting dressed anymore.
You are a Joy !
Thank you again. I learn so much from you!
I would argue that one doesn't really need to chose ethically made and environmentally friendly clothes to made capsule wardrobe. It will be great if more people made this choice, but it doesn't help, it actually makes things harder. It is absolutely worth it imo, but if it wasn't the case fast fashion wouldn't even exist.
And what people need to create capsule wardrobes is not just inspiration, but also technical education on how to... and this is where many of us struggle. Choosing the right color scheme (the one that doesn't make you look sick or feel bored to tears, different for different people). Choosing style (most professionals recommend to stick to a combo of two and adjust the mix according to situation, e. g. if your mix is sporty + elegant, your gym clothes will be like 5% elegant (mostly from colors used and attention to details), casual might be like 30% and formal wear should go up to 95% (something in scye cut maybe) to create cohesiveness and flexibility (so you can mix formal skirt and gym tank top and look fab instead of odd). There are more technical stuff about proportions and how to apply that color scheme. Otherwise people get inspired, create a capsule that doesn't really work for them and off to thrift store it goes.
This right here is the type of advice most of us need. I think his WHY explanation is spot on and motivating. However most people need to know how to execute it. I antisocial just started changing my style. I went to a great local boutique and I asked their buyer/ designer if they could give me a style recommendation. She recommended combining 2 styles and picked a good color palate for me. Never in a million years would I have picked TAN as a base color. I was thinking more orange or green. Nope, tan. Specifically it's a muted chalky tan that has a grayish tone. (We started with a soft colonial blue/gray but it didn't go well with the accessory colors that i like) Then picked items to make it pop. Big scarves, little scarves, belts, broaches, etc.
I started fresh, all of my current clothes that fit the style went into the guest room closet. One large drawer for the accessory pieces. Then slowly added to the closet with base clothes that could take me from lunch with friends to city council meetings to fancy dinners. I utilize Rent The Runway for formal events and now don't have a dozen ball gowns jamming my closet full!
After about a 6 month transition, I stopped using anything in my actual closet and only the curated wardrobe in the guest room.
I invited girlfriends over to purge my bedroom closet. Told them EVERYTHING will go or get donated to charity. I love seeing my friends occasionally wearing some of my previous favorites.
Now the guest closet items have moved to my bedroom closet. I had so much space that I put a dresser in the closet for all of the accessories. I love my scarves whether tied around my neck, in my hair, draped over the shoulder or waist. It's become my signature look and I love it.
Okay I do have one fabulous red dress 💃 just for that occasional statement but I dress that up with scarves and wraps too.
Creating a look and collection changed my life. Less mental stress of what to wear. Less trying to stay on trend. Less cheap seasonal or thrift store finds clogging up my closet.
My recommendation to minimalizing your world, start with one room (bathroom is an easy start for most) and conquer that. Or pick an item like linens/bedding and start there. You don't need 6 different sets of bedsheets! Two is plenty (one is probably okay because you know we all wash them and put them straight back onto the bed. lol). Shoes and purses, cut your current amount in half and then cut it again. You'll feel fanatic accomplishing the low hanging fruit. Then move on to more.
Good luck.
Evening Joshua! Hope you’re well
Found your video from "The minimal mom" channel 👍🏻
I am really grateful for your sharing Joshua. May the LORD continue to
bless you to be a blessing to others.
Joshua, thank for one more great video. Meanwhile, I can happily tell you that, previously inspired by your videos and other youtubers's that I follow, I did kind of a wardrobe renovation. I bought essentially great clothes that fit me and my personal style, mostly in second hand. And now I have a great minimalist wardrobe, and I get to choose clothes that I love every single day. Thank you so much once more for your inspiration 😄❤️
Yes thanks Eddie Munster😅😅

I love each video you make, it always encourages me. So much wisdom.
So true! Thank you very much for your excellent, meaningful videos! I am looking forward to watching them every week!
Thank you
Fantastic pointers!!
#3 has resonated so much for me growing up. I am proud of the age I am, and know what I want and like.
I agree with all your points, but especially the plea that we buy ethical/sustainable options.
Thankyou,, it’s a great feeling when I wear something I already have for a special occasion rather than buying new ,, saves me money and the planet

Thank you so much! I'm just about to unpack our family clothes after a move and have a good sorting out
Would you make a video like this but for menu planning and eating well?
Joshua boa noite.
Abraços aqui do Brasil!
Thank you Joshua … you are always on point.
Being a south asian i have a habit of holding the on to pieces that i think can be used for my daughters when they grow older. Although i try to keep my own closer minimal now, with only things i love to wear
Awesome video. Nicely said and makes sense.
Great video❤❤
Another great video. Thank you Joshua
Why does he not have 1 million subs by now. ❤❤❤
I don't know. I probably need more content built for viral growth like "10 Things I Stopped Buying at Wal-Mart" or "Come Tour My Minimalist House and See Where My Children Sleep"...
@@JoshuaBecker You’re doing great right now. I know u will get there. 😃
The channel lacks advertising so I guess the YT algoritm doesn't push it to the top
@JoshuaBecker please don't change a thing about your content or style. Good length, great content, and no fluff!!!
@@SparkleMist0915 absolutely agree
What a beautiful review #Josh
Thank you Joshua
Thank you for the great advice.

Thank you Joshua😃😀😀😃
Keep it up! Thanks for the content
This guy is as informative and deep as that poster with word art behind him
thank you for the advice!
Thanks
Intelligent and to the point video 👍
Excellent advice
Aw thank you
Great list!
Find your own style..and stick with it.. ❤
I dress for other people, period. When I dress for myself, I'm not wearing any clothes at all. Clothes aren't my form of self-expression, but my way of making other people comfortable around me.
Lol.
You can never make everyone happy, make yourself happy first
Having tons of clothes for my family has been a burden. We wear the same clothes over and over while the rest create just things to store.
Great advice
I do try to buy second hand clothing & sell or donate what I no longer like or wear or fits. But you need to take care of clothing like anything else you invest in. Quality machine that removes j by bobbles or piling from clothes is helpful. Learn how to sew on buttons etc. Learn about the item care instructions for washing etc. These will make you favourite items last longer.
lovely Joshua.
This was a great video.
My father used to tell me if you do not have the money to buy clothing that is expensive buy something that you know you will wear over and over even if it's second hand but the main thing is that are clean and do not offend people by your choice of clothing.. You should dress in a modest manner.
Yes, styles and trends change all the time. Think of the money you can save by not being a victim of fad and fashion
Comfort first; then color.
Love this
Thanks Jill!
❤❤❤
Living in New England requires a lot more clothes it seems! Lol !
So does living in Minnesota. I need a whole lot more for the winter. Can't just layer up, the layers need to be WARM! And summer can be hot and humid so I'm not going to be wearing my flannel and wool. (People who live in AZ don't quite get it, which is surprising because Joshua used to live in New England.)
I live in Maine and I have a minimal wardrobe. I have one winter coat, hat and mittens and one lighter weight jacket for spring and fall, which also repels rain. I have two pairs of neutral long pants and two pairs of neutral shorts and 5 tank tops / short-sleeve shirts, 2 long-sleeve shirts and 2 sweaters. They all mix and match and layer. In addition, one dress for any weddings or funerals I need to attend. I'm retired, so I don't need any business clothing. I'm obviously not a fashionista, but it works well for me.
Joshua went to high school in North Dakota, grew up in South Dakota, lived in Minnesota for one year, and held his first job in Wisconsin. He knows Cold Weather… and stands by everything he says :)
The best environmentally sound clothing is buying less and buying second hand.
My wardrobe is not perfect comfortable. So, i'm looking for new things. Although I understand that it is not entirely correct. If things would be of high quality and beautiful than this problem wouldn't exist. But new thing may be the same. It is difficult to determine in advance.
Stick with quality for longer lasting clothing and shoes. If you buy one item, donate the replaced item. Simplicity and calm.
😎 What brand are your v neck shirts? ✌
Minimalism seems to be more about getting rid of most of life’s pleasures. I get a good feeling when I acquire new clothes which look good on me. A capsule wardrobe is vital to have but, to build on not wear all the time.
I like a tidy house but not a nearly empty one which minimalism seems to be preaching. Not only is it a very bland environment to live in, if people are buying less, shops’ profits go down and more jobs disappear. Somewhere there has to be a happy medium😊
Most of the minimalists that I know of don't fit that description at all! Have you seen The Minimal Mom, Diane in Denmark, or The Secret Slob?
Minimalism isn’t about getting rid of life’s pleasures. Minimalism recognizes that there are greater pleasures in life than material possessions, and that spending money and time on possessions you don’t need distracts you from the real, lasting pleasures in life. Hope that helps describe it a bit better for you.
For me minimalism = early retirement.
👍👍👍
