Join me on one of the worst flights I've taken to date, Iberia's Airbus A330 in Business Class. There was little premium about today's experience, the cabin cleanliness was shocking, the inflight food was lacking and in part inedible and given the price point of this flight - it offers poor value for money.
As always I offer a brutally honest review of what it's like to fly in the pointy end, so you can expect a comprehensive review of the Business Class lounge at Chicago airport, along with a seat tour, food & beverage walkthrough and that all important "bed" rating. As always do let me know what you think, and also what your experience of Iberia has been to date? Was this just them on a really bad day, or this actually a more common occurrence?

Iberia have ALWAYS been dreadful - and I mean DREADFUL. We lived in Madrid for a few years in the early 90's. One of the first trips back to London we flew on an MD80. I requested a no smoking seat ( ie front section of the biz cabin ). Once on our way the people in the opposite row, row 3 I think lit up! I asked one of the cabin crew if that was allowed...she said ' oh yes, no smoking this side, smoking that side!!!! What loon came up with that idea? In effect the WHOLE aircraft was a smoking section. Needless to say we avoided Iberia like the plague from then on. As a side note Aerolinas Argentinas ran a service between LHR and Madrid in those days using 747's, and we often travelled back and forth with them and they were lovely in all respects.

How much time you got? My only experience with Iberia they sat us on the tarmac for an hour. I ended up missing my connecting flight in Madrid and they refused to give me any consideration because they blamed me missing the flight on customs.
They put me on a standby flight which I got on. Only to find out they lost my bag when I arrived at my destination. It took them almost a week to find it then they forwarded the bag to my destination airport for me to pickup only to find it was sent back to Madrid to be forwarded again to another airport closer to me.
I finally got my bag back but the cherry on top was I had to wait 6 months and repeatedly call for a status update just to get reimbursed 100$ for all the clothes I had to buy when they lost my bag. Needless to say I’m not too keen on them either but perhaps I’ll give them another try at some point.

Will, thanks for this eye opening review. Whenever I experience a cabin in awful condition ( once I boarded an international flight in Business Class and the seatback was slashed and the entire seat jiggled when I changed position in it 😱) my first thought is, " is this indicative of their maintenance also?" Maybe I am over reacting but if an airline can't maintain a reasonably clean cabin, are they capable of maintaining the airworthiness of the aircraft? This video creeped me out. I am just glad that you arrived in Madrid safely. Take care and enjoy your week.

Did you notice at the very end that the “IB” from their name were missing from the engine cover? There may be a very simple explanation for it, but seems like some kind of part was replaced with an off the shelf item and they didn’t bother to replace the logo. The plane might be perfectly airworthy but the lack of attention to detail gives me just enough pause to wonder what other corners they cut.

I concur with everything you have said about Iberia. We have just flown back business class from Miami to the UK via Madrid and it was awful. The flight was delayed by 2 hrs but we only found this out when went to the gate for the boarding time. in the airport lounge and on their app it was still showing as departing on time at 18.20. When we did finally board at 20.10 we didn't take off until 20.50. This delay almost cost us our connection in MAD. Food was awful, seat was awful, staff were unhelpful and safety was a joke. The woman opposite me was still in a reclined position with her eye mask on as we came in to land. As we hit the tarmac 2 bottles of water came bouncing down the aisle.
The best part of the trip was the use of the Flagship lounge at Miami pre flight
I won't be flying Iberia again.

Holy cow! That level of “deep dirt” is unacceptable and symptomatic of a complete failure in their systems and processes. In any public space one can forgive dirt and untidiness caused by, say, a messy passenger using the bathroom immediately before you. But this was systemic, long-term, deep-seated dirt and, therefore, a greater health hazard. I had a similar experience visiting the bathroom in a branch of a well-known sandwich chain in London last year. Same problem; deep, ingrained dirt built up over a long period as a result of no more than superficial cleaning.
For balance, I recently took an Iberia business class flight LHr-MAD, and on to Lanzarote. Service, catering and cleanliness were all exemplary. In fact the catering was better than on the BA Club Europe flight back (although the BA service was better).

The plane was literally, a garbage can in the sky. The level of indifference to hygiene is shocking - where are the standards? It's obvious, that plane has not been properly cleaned, in some time.
I have flown Iberia, numerous times - 1st time in 1973, JFK to MAD - and although not what I would consider a top international carrier, this is just unacceptable and unnecessary.
I can still remember when they offered their female passengers a red rose, upon boarding, and handed out these yummy hard shell candies with chewy interiors and meals came with wine, in Coach!
My parents were Spanish and I lived there, as a child, so seeing this video is upsetting.

Iberia is a Spanish airline founded in 1927 and one of the oldest airlines in the world. In 2010 it merged with British Airways, resulting in a new holding company called IAG (International Airlines Group) based in London.

Somehow, I’m not surprised by this video, though I would have hoped that my experience with Iberia many years ago was an anomaly. Upon takeoff from Barcelona heading to NYC, a large piece of the ceiling fell down and landed in the aisle, obstructing the pathway to the exits for most passengers in that cabin, and thankfully avoiding hitting anyone when falling. No announcement was made, no attempt was made to remove it or clean it up, and the flight continued to NYC as if nothing happened.

It was on a flight from Madrid to Rome, and missing the initial flight would mean that I would also miss my connecting flight to Split. The lady at the check-in counter couldn’t have been any more rude & dismissive. Regardless, we got our tickets and made it to the gate. We were already scrambling looking for alternative flights, or looking for other passengers on the flight that would be willing to sell their tickets. Once all people on the gate boarded, we approached the gate to see if there were any empty seats left. Turns out, the flight was half empty, and all our worries had been for nothing/that dumb c*nt at the check-in counter.

That plane was disgusting. Thank you for the review and I will never use this airline. I could not have sat in all that filth and would have exited the plane before takeoff. 🤢🤢

I thought I'd flown on some dirty planes before, but never seen anything like that. Even worse, a $5000 USD seat! The even sadder part is, with the loo review...it most likely was the entire plane, not just your seat/loo. I'd be demanding some serious answers/refund action. One question, did you tell the crew of the situation both dirt and the breakfast?

I travelled IBERIA for the first time last week. A short hop from Barcelona to Madrid in seats that looked like they were from a bus. Then a long haul Madrid to San Juan, PR in super tight economy. And yes the bathrooms were disgusting and stopped flushing half way thru the flight. Food was ok to be honest but not far as good as American flying the similar route. GREAT VIDEO - thanks.

I always wipe down everything around me, even pre pandemic. It's amazing just how much dirt you pick up. Also I do the buttons and touch screens. I did it in ANA first, the crew came over in horror .asking what the problem was. I thought she was going to commit sepuku. Told her it's my routine .

Japanese people tend to take a lot of pride in their customer service/hospitality skills and in keeping things clean.
They probably thought that you were wiping the seat down because it wasn't clean enough. Which, to them, (if this were the case) would be a massive embarassment on their end.
I know it's your routine, but try and keep this in mind the next time you fly on a Japanese carrier. You'll usually have nothing to worry about anyways.

Im really surprised because I've flown iberia recently in economy class and it was much, much cleaner.

20 monthsish on, have you flown Iberia again? Was there any reachout buy the airline since posting the video? It would be interesting to see the food going in the other direction.

5:53 I guess the reason why London airports aren't well prepared for snow is that it seldom happens there. So it's just cheaper for them to cancel flights than to be prepared for snow. Chicago has a much different climate and very harsh winters.

Strangely enough I flew the same class last year on MAD-HAV-MAD (return in economy) and I found the plane clean, the crew friendly and professional, the food tasty and in addition to this we arrived about half an hour ahead of the time in both directions. And it was way cheaper. So it all depends on how lucky you are, I guess.

What a surprise...I´ve flown Iberia in First Class back when they had it on their 747s, in Business Class and on domestic Economy within Spain. They are consistently and across all three cabins the crappiest airline flying to Europe. I had a contractual obligation to fly with them for a period of time so I can assure you, it´s not a one-off. Sullen crew, bad food, filthy cabins. Par for the course on Iberia. I avoid them.

This is so disgusting. Iberia should be ashamed of their cabin services. I understand an aircraft is not the cleanest place but my jaw really dropped when I saw what was left behind the seat. Such a safety hazard.
